MARILYN SAMUELSON
September 5, 1931 - August 28, 2013

Marilyn Samuelson, 81, of Forest City, died Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2013 at Good Samaritan Care Center in Forest City.

Memorial services will be held 11 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 5, 2013 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City, with Pastor Rod Hopp officiating. Co-Inurnment with her late husband, David Samuelson, will be held at Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter, at 11 a.m., Monday, Sept. 9, 2013.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services, at the church.

Marilyn was born to the late Maynard and Alice Olsen, on Sept. 5, 1931 in Minneapolis, Minn. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1949.  Marilyn was married to the late David H. Samuelson, on Aug. 28, 1953.

Marilyn worked at Egekvist Bakery in Minneapolis and Pioneer Seed Corn in Algona, was President of the Swea City Library Board and was instrumental in creating a new library building, volunteered for Meals on Wheels, leader in the Girl Scouts and Camp Fire Girls, and served with Pastor David Samuelson at several churches throughout the mid-west. She played the great bass fiddle in high school band. A lifetime hobby was fossil hunting with husband, David. The couple traveled to Montana, Greece, several Archeological sites in the mid-west, Rome, personal audience with Pope John Paul II in Vatican City, Ancient Sea Port of Ostia Italy, South Dakota, Yucatan Peninsula, New Mexico, Texas and Instanbul, Turkey.

Marilyn is survived by her children, Paul Samuelson of Lincoln, Neb., Karl Samuelson of Minneapolis, Minn., Joel Samuelson of Lincoln, Neb., Gloria Doyle of Waukee, and Laura (Mark Hawks) Samuelson of Urbandale; nine grandchildren, Nichole (Hunter) Flodman, Matthew (Jenna) Samuelson, Andrew Samuelson, Ian Miller, Ingrid Miller, Erin McGohan, Claire McGohan, Adam Hawks, and Jeremy Hawks; three great-grandchildren, Ethan Samuelson, Nolan Samuelson and Alec Flodman; her brothers, Jerry (Muriel) Olsen of Richfield, Minn., Paul (Pat) Olsen of Bloomington, Minn.; son-in-law, Kurt Miller of St. Louis Park, Minn.; cousins, Alice Naslund and Janet Subject, William, John and James Kallestad, and Jeffrey Optiz; and nieces, Suzy Haeg, Kirsten Jacob, Maria Olsen and Karin Dykstra.  

She was preceded in death by her husband, David Samuelson; her parents, Maynard and Alice Olsen; her daughter, Cynthia Miller; granddaughter, Hannah Doyle; son-in-law, Brian Doyle; brother, Thomas; aunts, Agnes Olsen and Margaret Olsen; and her cat, Freya.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Good Samaritan Care Center in Forest City.

GARY E HENNING
July 15, 1942 - July 10, 2013

Gary E. Henning, 70 of Burt, Iowa, formerly of Forest City, died of cancer Wednesday, July 10, 2013 at the Kossuth County Hospital in Algona, Iowa.

Graveside services will be held at 10:30 AM, Saturday, September 7, 2013 at Pilot Knob Lutheran Church Cemetery in rural Forest City with Reverend Robert Snitzer officiating. Burial will be in Pilot Knob Lutheran Cemetery in rural Forest City.

Gary Ernest Henning was born July 15, 1942. Gary, the oldest of seven children was a proud father of three sons. After graduating from school, Gary enlisted in the United States Army and proudly served his country during the Vietnam War. Gary served two tours and received a purple heart and other numerous medals during his time there. He was proud of his service and his dedication to keeping his family and friend's safe at all times. We thank you Gary for your service to our country and for the freedom you so diligently fought for.

Gary had a deep love for the open sky and the open range. He made his home in Montana and became a rancher, a handy man, and many things in between. To his friends, Gary was a "wheeler-dealer". He enjoyed dealing in various items but especially old cars and parts. Gary was a country boy through and through, a cowboy hat, boots, and jeans were formal wear for him.

Gary unconditionally loved his family and was always there if you needed him.

Left to cherish his memories and love are Linda Henning of Stevensville, MT; sons, Christopher Henning of Stevensville, MT, Mike (Brianne) Henning of Florence, MT and Mac Henning of Stevensville, MT; four brothers, Ernest Henning Jr., Robert (Janet) Henning, Herman (Marlene) Henning, and Doug (Ruth) Henning; two sisters, Marion (Gary) Prevot and Sherry (Greg) Flugum; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.

Gary is preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Shirley Henning and grandparents and many other relatives; and his buddies that he lost in the war.


SHIRLEY EYMANN
April 7, 1927 - September 5,  2013

Shirley June Eymann, 86, of Verona, Wis., died peacefully Sept. 5, 2013 after a brief stay at the Agrace Hospice in Fitchburg, Wis.

Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept.14, 2013, at St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church, 427 S. Main St., Verona, Wis., with Rev. Dr. Kurt Billings officiating.

Family will receive friends one hour prior to church services on Saturday at the church.  Following the service, there will be a burial ceremony at the Verona City Cemetery. After internment, the family will host a celebration reception at 540 N. Nine Mound Road in Verona. Shirley was born on April 7, 1927, in Dubuque, the youngest child of Joseph and Bertha Jungwirth. Shirley attended high school in Dubuque and graduated from Drake University in Des Moines.

Shirley was married to Ernest Ulbrich previously, and was widowed one and a half years later.

She was united in marriage to Don Eymann on Aug. 15, 1950, in Mason City.  She enjoyed traveling, entertaining, gardening, fishing, playing cards, but her great love and enjoyment was her family and friends.

She attended St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church in Verona.

Left to cherish her memory are her three children: Suzanne Wright of Oregon City, Ore., Joni Fields and her husband, Dan, of Miromar Lakes, Fla., and Jan Eymann-McConville and her husband Tim, of Verona, Wis.; five grandchildren: Jenny, Stephanie, Leanna, Tyler, and Kolby. 

She was proceeded in death by her husband Don, her parents, three brothers, Clarence, Arnold and Joseph, and two sisters, Hazel and Lorraine.

In lieu of flowers, Shirley’s family has requested that any memorial contributions be made to Agrace Hospice, 5395 East Cheryl Parkway, Madison, Wis., 53711.


JAMES "Jim" MICHAEL THUNE
August 7, 1967 - September 15, 2013
James Jim Thune, age 46, of Lake Mills, Iowa, died of heart failure on Sunday, September 15, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa in Mason City, Iowa.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, September 18, 2013, at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills, Iowa, with Pastor David E. Jordon officiating.

Inurnment will be in the Winnebago Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Lake Mills.

A memorial visitation will be on Tuesday, September 17, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street in Lake Mills, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.

James Michael Thune was born on August 7, 1967, in Forest City, Iowa, to parents Michael and Marilyn (Sanden) Thune. He was baptized at Winnebago Lutheran Church and confirmed at Salem Lutheran Church, where he was currently a member.

Jim graduated from Lake Mills High School in 1986. During high school, he was the manager for the wrestling team and was a champion archer, competing at both state and national levels. Jim entered the University of Iowa as an honor student, and graduated with a degree in business marketing.

After graduating from college, Jim went to work for Menards in Oakdale, Minnesota, and later in Columbus, Nebraska. He later was the manager of the Discovery Channel store in the Mall of America. Jim was also the manager of World Market in Roseville, Minnesota. After Jim moved back to Lake Mills, he was an entrepreneur selling items on E-Bay, mostly custom Lego sets.

On June 19, 1994, Jim was married to Kristine Struth. The couple had a son, Michael Allan, born on September 15, 1995. The couple later divorced.

Jim was a very intelligent man and knew a lot about everything; Jim was fascinated with physics, geology, astronomy, as well as other sciences. He was also an excellent cook and enjoyed trying new recipes and foods. Jim will be remembered as a kind hearted person who loved his family.

He is survived by his parents, Allan and Marilyn Pederson of Lake Mills; son Michael; brother, Jeffrey (Erin) Pederson of Lake Mills; and two nieces whom he loved dearly, Nora and Gracie Pederson. Jim is also survived by aunts and uncles, Phillip Thune of Manly, IA, Carol and Dale Gurwell of Clive, IA, Gary and Deborah Sanden of Marietta, GA, and Kayla and Jim Wieme of Rochester, MN; and cousins and their families, Kim and Dave Schloesser, Alex & Drew of Germantown, WI, Michelle and Andrew Arnburg, Brianna & Lizzie of Earlham, IA, Liza and Tom Crockett, Collin & Wren of Anchorage, AK, Ryan and Stacy Wieme, Maren & Oliver of Madison, WI, Ben and Ellen King, Colin & Sam of Maple Grove, MN, Ben and Shelley Sanden of Marietta, GA, Steven and Brenda Thune, Zach & Zoey of Waterloo, IA, Laura Thune of Minneapolis, MN, and Melissa Thune Olsen of Denver, CO.

Jim was preceded in death by his father Michael in 1969; two sisters, Joan in 1967 and Julie in 1981; and his grandparents, Melvin and Orene Sanden, Gisle and Kathryn Thune, and Glen and Alvina Pederson.


GLADYS HALL

Gladys Thompson Hall, 93, formerly of Forest City, died Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013 in Bakersfield, Calif.

Funeral Services were held Friday, Sept. 6 in Bakersfield, Calif.

 Gladys was married to Harold Hall, formerly of Miller.


JOSHUA G GAPP
February 24, 1983 - September 15, 2013

Joshua G. Gapp, 30, of Kearney, died Sunday, September 15, 2013 as a result of a car accident near Kearney.  A Celebration of Life service will be held at 10:30 A.M., Thursday, September 19, 2013 at the Cornerstone Berean Church with the Reverend Kelly Larson officiating. Interment will be held at a later date in the Riverside Cemetery in Gibbon. At the family request cremation has taken place. Family will receive friends  from 5-7 on Wednesday, September 18, 2013 at the O'Brien Straatmann Redinger Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the family for Owen's education. Online condolences may be submitted to www.osrfh.com. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the O'Brien Straatmann Redinger Funeral Home of Kearney.

Josh was born February 24, 1983 in Forest City, Iowa to Larry and Pam (Monsen) Gapp.  Josh grew up in Forest City, Iowa where he received his education.  He was baptized as a teen at the First Baptist Church of Forest City.  He graduated from the Iowa State University with a bachelors degree.    Josh married Amber Holl on May 24, 2008 in Kearney. He worked in Lincoln at Fiserv then in November of 2012 they moved to Kearney where he worked at Xpanxion as a computer software quality assurance analyst.    Josh loved to go camping, boating, wakeboarding, snow skiing, and biking. He enjoyed the outdoors and being with his family.  He was so happy and proud to be a father.

Survivors include his wife; son Owen at home, his parents of Forest City, IA; brothers; Justin (Tiffany) Gapp  Titonka, IA , Jacob and friend Janelle Moniot of Forest City, IA,  grandmother; Elaine Gapp of Forest City, IA; Mother and Father In-laws; Randy and Jolene Holl of  Kenesaw; brother-in-law; Justin (Deedra) Holl of White House, TN, sister-in-law; Erin (Shawn) Herter of Kenesaw; nephews,Chase and Blake of Kenesaw, NE; neices, Abigail Gapp of Titonka, IA, Kinley and Kenadie of White House, TN; numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Josh was preceeded in death by grandparents; Eugene Gapp , Eugene and Carmen Monsen.
