JENNIFER BOYKEN

June 8, 1972 - December 22, 2014

In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to either the Titonka Ambulance or the Titonka Care Center in Jennifer's name.

Jennifer Rebecca Boyken was born June 8, 1972, in Aurora, Illinois, the daughter of Robert and Kathleen (Fox) Carden, Sr. She grew up in Oswego where she also attended school and in 1991 graduated from the Oswego High School. Jennifer went on to attend Iowa State University in Ames and later obtained her Associate Degree in Nursing from Iowa Lakes Community College.

On November 7, 1993, Jennifer was united in marriage to Aaron Boyken in Ames, Iowa. After their marriage they lived in Ames before moving to Titonka in 1996. Jennifer worked as a nurse at the Titonka Care Center and for the last 13 years has also worked as an EMT on the Titonka Ambulance Service.

Jennifer enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, working with the ambulance crew and attending Iowa State Cyclone football games. She was a member of the Good Hope Lutheran Church where in the past she had served as a Sunday School teacher.

Jennifer died Sunday, December 22, 2014, at her residence in Titonka. She was 41.

She is survived by her husband, Aaron Boyken; children, Rebecca, William and Robert Boyken all of Titonka; parents, Robert and Kathleen Carden, Sr. of Lampe, Missouri; siblings, Brian and Holly Bellie of Downers Grove, Illinois; Robert Carden, Jr. of Crystal Lake, Illinois; mother and father-in-law, Allan and Joy Boyken of Titonka; brothers-in-law, Marshall and Miya Boyken of Tulsa, Oklahoma; Lucas and Sheri Boyken of Goldfield; nieces and nephews, Marissa, Erin and Alan Bellie; Kevin Carden-Landa; Adam, Lily, Ava, Jaden and Alec Boyken.

She was preceded in death by her maternal and paternal grandparents.

MAX DEVERE NYE
March 27, 1921 - January 2, 2014

Max DeVere “Charlie” Nye, 92 of Fertile, died Thursday,Max Jan. 2, 2014 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014 at Pilot Knob Lutheran Church with Rev. Robert Snitzer officiating.

Visitation was held 4 – 7 p.m., Tuesday at Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 North Clark St.

Interment will be held in Brush Point Cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa or the Pilot Knob Lutheran Church.

Charlie, the son of Verne Charles and Aimee Bell (McEnelly) Nye was born March 27, 1921 in Fertile. He graduated from Fertile High School in 1939. He enlisted in the United States Navy in June of 1942, where he served in World War II. He married Florence V. Larson on July 28, 1945.

Charlie worked as a butter maker in the Fertile and Clear Lake creameries, a mechanic at the Chevrolet dealer in Fertile; owned grocery stores in Fertile and Hanlontown; and retired in 1983 from the Iowa DOT. After the war, Charlie played baseball in the borderline baseball league for 12 years and after retiring he played hockey with the Mason City Novice Hockey League until he was 80 years old.

Charlie was involved in a number of community activities including Lions Club, summer youth baseball, fire department, and town government to name a few. He was instrumental in sponsoring and building the towns first lighted baseball field. Charlie was fortunate to attend an Honor Flight trip to Washington DC in April 2010 which he thoroughly enjoyed.

He is survived by sons, Roger (Johanna) Nye of Graham Wash., Jerry Nye of Fertile and Brian (Cynthia) Nye of Longmont, Colo.; niece, Mary Ann Stram of Bloomington, Minn., and her family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Florence in 2012; brother, Charles Norman Nye and sister, Doris (in infancy).

Arrangements are with Petersen-Lund Funeral Home.

SALLY STEFFENSON
October 10, 1983 - December 21, 2014

Sally SteffensenSally Anne Steffensen, 30, of Goshen, Ind., died unexpectedly following a long illness on Saturday, Dec. 21, 2014, at Mercy Medical Center- North Iowa in Mason City.

Memorial services were held 2 p.m., Monday, Dec. 23 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City with Pastor Rod Hopp officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date in Goshen, Ind.

Visitation was one hour prior to services at the church. Petersen Lund Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City.

Sally Anne Steffensen, the daughter of DeRay and Karen (Eymann) Steffensen, was born Oct. 10, 1983, at Mason City. She was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Goshen. Sally attended school in Forest City until 1991 when the family moved to Goshen, Ind. In 2002 she graduated in the top 10 in her class from Goshen High School. She continued her education at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., where she was on the dean’s list and a member of Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. After college Sally returned to Goshen and was active in volunteer work in the community and her church.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Goshen.

Sally is survived by her parents, DeRay and Karen Steffensen of Goshen, Ind.; brother, John Steffensen of Goshen, Ind.; grandmothers, Mavis Langerud of Forest City and Clarine Steffensen of Lake Mills; and many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her grandfathers, John Eymann and DeVere Steffensen; and an aunt, Nancy Monson.

BRYAN ALROY HANNA
November 23, 1956 - December 25, 2014 

Bryan HannaBryan Alroy Hanna, the son of Alroy (Blondie) and Audrey (Jarshaw) Hanna, was born on Nov. 23, 1956 in Buffalo Center, and died at his home on Christmas Day, 2014. He had attended and graduated from Woden-Crystal Lake High School and NIACC in Mason City. After graduation from NIACC, he returned to live in Crystal Lake and work for Etherington Construction building pole sheds. When driving down the road, he would delight in pointing to a building and say, “I built that one!”

After marrying Gina Brockmeyer in 1980, they moved to Mason City where he worked for Larry Elwood Construction for many years. Two children were born to this union, Alex Bryan in 1985 and Lauren Marie in 1993. He was also blessed with the birth of a grandson, Lincoln Alex Hanna in 2012.

In the late 1980s, Bryan started his own business, Hanna Concrete and Construction with the focus on concrete. He owned and operated this business until the time of his death. Working with concrete is hard work, but Bryan was very good at what he did.

On Nov. 11, 2011, he married Stephanie Corneliusen at their Eastbrook residence.

Bryan was fond of the Hawkeyes, the Twins, the Vikings and NASCAR. He enjoyed classic cars, especially his 1972 Monte Carlo that he drove proudly. Traveling, being on the lake, attending Aerosmith concerts, and making food for the many friends that were always at the house were when he would smile the most. Playing slow pitch softball with the guys, who were his life-long friends, was a big part of his summers.

Bryan is survived by his wife, Stephanie; his children, Alex (Amy) Hanna of Edgewood, daughter, Lauren Hanna currently a student at UNI in Cedar Falls; grandson, Lincoln; parents, Alroy and Audrey Hanna of Mason; three sisters, Deb (Mike) Brock of Mason City, Linda (Duane) Jensen of Colorado Springs, Co., and his twin sister, Brenda (Phil) Underbakke of Blue Earth, Minn.; uncles and aunts, Jimmie and Barb Jarshaw, Walnut Creek, Calif., and Terry and Carol Hanna of Liberty, Mo. He was also ‘Uncle Bryan’ to numerous nieces and nephews. Andy, and Hachai, his beloved dogs will miss his presence.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Justin and Anna Jarshaw; paternal grandparents, Sylvan and Helene Hanna; and his former father-in- law, Virgil Brockmeyer, with whom he enjoyed a close relationship.


NADINE BERG
December 5, 1934 - January 1, 2014
 
Nadine BergNadine Berg, age 79 of Scottsdale, AZ and formerly Lakota passed away Wednesday January 1, 2014 at the Concord Care Center in Garner.

A memorial service will be held 1PM Saturday January 4 at the Eagle Center in Lakota with Pastor Lynn Noel officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the center.

Inurnment will be at a later date.

Nadine Mae was born December 5, 1934 in Northrup, MN to Dick and Hazel (Smith) Ludeman. She grew up Elmore with her older brother Meryn and older sister Marv.

She met Buryl Berg, her high school sweetheart, and married him on December 10, 1951 at the Little Brown Church. She and Buryl lived outside of Elmore with their beloved children Becke, Mickey, and Rich.

In 1982 she and Buryl headed south to Roadrunner Lakeside Resort where they spent the next 30 years. During her time in Iowa and Arizona she enjoyed baking cakes and Cowboy Cookies, camping at Dawson’s, playing cards, watching the Arizona Cardinals, Diamondbacks, and Phoenix Suns, hosting family and friends, planting flowers and watching humming birds. Nadine was an avid shopper and made sure that no family member ever went without.

Nadine spent the last year at the Concord Care Center in Garner. She and her family are so thankful for the past year they had to spend together. During this time she especially enjoyed outings to the local nail spa and mall with all of her family.

Nadine is survived by her daughter Becke (Mark) Dorenbush, sons Mickey and Rich (Theresa) Berg, grandchildren Chris (Kristy) Berg, Deah (Bryan) Hested, Gina (Steve) Rooney, Blake Berg and fiancé Lindsey Squier, and Brooke Berg and friend Nick Veenstra, great grandchildren, Abbie and Maxwell Berg, Hailey, Sydney and Makayla Hested, and Jack Rooney.

Nadine is preceded in death by her parents, loving husband Buryl in 2003, brother and sister, brother-in-law Bill Herath, sister-in-law Gwen Jensen, and niece Helen Fuller.

Nadine’s family would like to thank all of the loving and caring staff at the Concord Care Center who provided for Nadine over the past year. She was thankful for their professionalism and friendship as well.

PEARL URBATSCH
April 3, 1918 - January 8, 2014
Pearl Margaret Urbatsch, 95, of Forest City, died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014, at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, Jan. 16, at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Forest City with a gathering of friends and family one hour prior to services. The service will be followed by a private burial at the Bohemian Cemetery in Plymouth.

Memorials may be directed to the Pearl M. Urbatsch memorial fund in care of the family.

Pearl M. Urbatsch was born on April 3, 1918, the daughter of John and Laura (Prell) Koci at home near Plymouth. She graduated from Grafton High School in 1935 followed by one year attending Cedar Falls’ teachers college. Pearl then completed coursework at Hamilton Business College where she graduated in 1937.

On Sept. 30, 1939, Pearl married the love of her life, Harley R. Urbatsch in a secret ceremony in Albany, Mo. Pearl lived in California while Harley served as a Second Lieutenant in the Navy during World War II. Following the war, Harley and Pearl moved back to Iowa and owned hardware stores in Goodell and Garner before settling in Forest City. Pearl and Harley purchased the Forest City Our Own Hardware Store where they worked until retirement. They spent their free time with family and friends, playing cards, and ballroom dancing. Pearl was an active member of her Circle at the United Methodist Church. Harley and Pearl spent retirement traveling, completing four trips to Europe. On each trip, Pearl came home with new friends from around the world.

Following Harley’s death in 1996, Pearl decided to go back to work and became a sample lady at Bill’s grocery store in Forest City where she worked until she was 91, and continued to make numerous friends during her years working there. Pearl was such a positive person who always had a contagious smile. She spent the holiday season making fudge for everyone in town and sending nearly 250 Christmas cards!

Pearl will be sadly missed by her son, Harley Urbatsch and wife Pamela of Forest City, daughter Sue Urbatsch and partner Glen Pannkuk of Forest City; six grandchildren, Kristin Hansen and husband Torben of St. Paul, Minn., Brian Urbatsch of Forest City, Jamie Urbatsch of Forest City, Katie Bowers and husband Jake of Oak Park, Ill., Laura Arterburn and husband Scott of Ankeny, Wendy Eggebraaten and husband Noah of Las Cruces, N.M.; four great-grandchildren, Emmalee Swanson, Dawson Urbatsch, Madison Urbatsch, and Ella Urbatsch, and her favorite dog, Chubbles.

Pearl was preceded in death by her husband, Harley, in 1996, her parents, John and Laura Koci, and her brother, Lowell “Bud” Koci.

SHARON WOLFE
August 13, 1962 - January 6, 2014

Sharon Caroline Wolfe, age 51, went Home to be with The Lord surrounded by her family in Mason City, on Jan. 6, 2014.

She was born on Aug. 13, 1962, in Grand Forks, N.D., fourth child of Harold and Beverly Bale. She graduated from Grand Forks Central High School and the University of North Dakota. She married Brian Wolfe on Sept. 29, 1984, in Grand Forks. They moved to Dickinson, N.D. in 1987 and then to St. Croix Falls, Wis., in 1992, where all three of their children graduated from St. Croix Falls High School. In 2010, Sharon and Brian moved to Forest City.

Sharon was diagnosed with leiomyosarcoma in July of 2012 and contributed to the study for a cure through participating in three clinical studies, two through Mayo clinic and one through Northwestern University.

Her greatest source of pride and joy were her children, Stephanie, Jeffrey, and Christian. Sharon had a long career with U.S. Bank in St. Paul that began with working evenings so that she could be with her kids during the day. She taught them to "work hard, be kind, and be honest." She loved spending time with her entire family, especially her children, granddaughters, and sister. A perfect day for her would be sunny and 75, wearing pink pjs and sunning herself on the dock at Kabekona, her family's lake home in northern Minnesota. She loved her flower gardens, quilting, and playing card games, often "playing under protest" for poor dealing or the appearance of cheating.

She is survived by her loving husband, Brian; her children, Stephanie Lechman (Matthew) of Dresser, Wis., Jeffrey Wolfe (Joanna) of Rice Lake, Wis., and Christian Wolfe of Grand Forks, N.D.; her granddaughters, Madelyn and Emily Lechman; her parents, Harold and Beverly Bale; sister, Charlotte Carlson; brothers, Mark and Richard; mother-in-law, Mary Wolfe; as well as brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Jan. 11 at Peace Lutheran Church in Dresser, Wis. Interment was in the Peace Lutheran Cemetery.

Palmer M. Valder, 94, of Fergus Falls, MN formerly of Joice, Iowa, died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014, at Lake Region Healthcare, Fergus Falls.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Wednesday, Jan.  22, 2014 at Bethel Lutheran Brethren Church of Joice, Iowa. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 1-hour prior the service.



ROGER E. THOMPSON
September 9, 1929 - January 5, 2014
Roger E. ThompsonRoger Thompson, age 84 of Lakota passed away Sunday January 5, 2014 at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.

Funeral service will be held 11 AM Saturday January 11 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Lakota with Pastor Lynn Noel officiating. Visitation will be Friday January 10 from 4-7 PM at the church.

Interment will be at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery.

Roger Eugene Thompson, son of Thomas and Viola (Engevik) Thompson was born September 9, 1929 in Dodge Center, Minnesota. He attended country school there through the eighth grade. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.

After years of helping his dad on the farm, he trucked livestock to South St. Paul. The Air Force beckoned and he joined for four years in 1951 and attended basic training at Lackland AFB in Texas. From there he spent 21 months in Okinawa, Japan at Kadena AFB and returned home in April of 1954.

He married Marilyn Meyer on October 31, 1954; to this union four children were born, Kevin, Jan, Steven and Suzanne. The family resided in Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Roger and Marilyn returned to Lakota in 1988, Roger then ran a small engine repair and second hand store until he sold the building in July of 2013.

Roger is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Marilyn, sons Kevin (Linda) and Steven, daughters Jan (Lance) Olson and Suzanne (Larry) Ackerson, seven grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers Robert and Dennis.



LLOYD H KIEWIET
January 8, 1918 - January 7, 2014
Lloyd H KiewietLloyd Kiewiet, age 95 of Buffalo Center passed away Tuesday January 7, 2014 at Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo Center.

Funeral service will be held 10:30 AM Saturday January 11 at the First Congregational Church in Buffalo Center with Pastors Brad DeVries and Bill Peake officiating. Visitation will be Friday January 10 from 5-7 PM at Winter Funeral Home in Buffalo Center.

Interment will be at Graceland Cemetery.

The son of William and Anna (Dirks) Kiewiet, Lloyd was born January 8, 1918 on a farm in Colfax Township near Holland, IA. He was the seventh child in a family of seven boys and three girls. When he was less than a year old, the family moved to a farm in Spirit Lake, IA and in 1923 they came to Buffalo Center, settling on a farm south of town.

Lloyd graduated from Buffalo Center high School in 1937 where he played on the 1936-37 Conference and State Sectional Championship basketball team. After graduation, Lloyd and his brother Carl boxed in area tournaments and competed in the 1939 and 1940 Golden Gloves Tournament in Des Moines where Lloyd was runner-up in his weight division.

On November 21, 1944 he married Harriet Bosworth of Manly who was teaching at Buffalo Center. They first lived on a farm south of town and in 1947 they returned to the Kiewiet home place where they lived until 1978 when they moved up the road a half a mile. Lloyd and Harriet were the parents of four children: Neal, Deborah, Katherine and Les.

Lloyd loved to farm and farmed the same land for 90 years, starting at the age of 5 driving a team of horses while his father sowed oats. Last spring was the last time he got on the tractor and made a few rounds. He kept most of the tractors, machinery and horse drawn equipment he farmed with over the years and enjoyed giving tours to visitors and explaining how things ran. For several years, he raised Belgian horses and enjoyed giving wagon and bobsled rides with his team. He always had a beautiful garden and was known for supplying family and friends with his special sweet corn in the summer, squash in the fall and his homemade caramel corn in the winter. He was a life-long member of the First Congregational Church where he served as a deacon and trustee, and treasurer for several years. He also served on the co-op oil company board.

He is survived by his children and their spouses; Neal & Patricia Kiewiet of LaGrange, IL; Deborah Kiewiet of Englewood, FL; Ken & Katherine Kiewiet Risius of Buffalo Center; and Les & Karen Kiewiet of Buffalo Center; grandchildren and step-grandchildren: Jesse Kiewiet, Matthew & Katy Kiewiet, Jared & Rachel Wollen, Jeffrey & Steven Dillavou, Chris & Ida Linden, Greg & Ashley Risius, James, Audrey and Amanda Risius, Cory & Carlenn Trunkhill, Tyson & Liz Trunkhill, Robert & Christine Feldick, Chris & Jesse Feldick, Randy & Jennifer Feldick, Abreha & Sarah Feldick; great-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren: Zachary & Annabelle Wollen; Shaelynn Risius; Kai & Beau Trunkhill; Avery & Teagan Trunkhill; Kayne & Kaylee Feldick; Kirby Nelson; Brianna & Crystal Gambell; Kolton & Kaitlyn Essick; Asmara, Semerra and Isaac Atsemet; his brother and sister-in-law Rollin “Todd” & Ethel Kiewiet of Buffalo Center and many nieces and nephews.

BETTY KIEL
February 16, 1949 - January 8, 2014

Betty KielBetty Kiel, age 64 of Thompson passed away Wednesday January 8, 2014 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.

Funeral service will be held 2:00 PM Saturday January 11 at the First Reformed Church in Buffalo Center with Pastor Bill Peake officiating. Visitation will be Friday January 10 from 5-7 PM at the church.

A private family interment will be at Roseland Cemetery in Sanborn, IA.

Betty Jean Kiel was born on February 16, 1949 in Orange City, Iowa to Henry and Nellie (De Jager) Vander Veen. She attended the Orange City Christian Elementary School and then Unity Christian High School until her graduation in 1968.

Betty met the love of her life and was united in marriage to Arlin Kiel on April 10, 1970 at First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City, IA. To that union they were blessed with three children.

Betty enjoyed spending time with her family, especially time spent at their cabin at the lakes. She enjoyed reading, boating, playing cards, watching her grandchildren play, family car cruises and maybe a little time at the casino. She also worked hard as the office manager in the family business, A & B Welding, Inc. for over 25 years.

Betty is survived by her loving husband of 43 years, Arlin Kiel; her three children, Chad (Brenda) Kiel of Thompson, Shelley Kiel-Elwood of Milford, IA and Tanya (Rich) Hengesteg of Lake Mills, IA. She was blessed with five grandchildren, Dustin Kiel, Jadyn Hengesteg, Devin Kiel, Morgan Elwood and Blaise Elwood. Two brothers Harv (Karen) Vander Veen; Marv (Beth) Vander Veen; her father and mother-in-law Bill and Joan Kiel and five sister-in-laws Wanda (George) Bowder; Cheryl (John) Hoogland; Twyla (Bob) Starkenburg; Linda (Marlin) Vander Velde, Laura (Dave) Pluim; as well as many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; stillborn bother Marvin; brother Clarence Vander Veen; sister-in-law Karen Vander Veen and brother-in-law Calvin Kiel.

Memorials can be given to the Cancer Center of America in Zion, IL or the local Food Banks/backpack programs.

JULIE WILLMERT

December 20, 1944 - January 11, 2014

Julie WillmertJulie Willmert, age 69 of Blue Earth, MN, passed away Saturday, January 11, 2014 at her home. A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 18 at Jacobsen & Winter Funeral Home in Blue Earth, with Pastor Lois Abel officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Blue Earth at a later date.

Julie Irene Willmert was born December 20, 1944 to Milton Paschke and Ann (Hovland) Paschke in Blue Earth, MN. Along with her brother, Steven, they made their home just east of Blue Earth.

She married Harley Willmert in 1963. Julie’s love of the land kept her busy gardening, sharing her produce with many, and helping with harvest every year. Her strong spirit, sense of humor and devotion to her family carried her through life. As a young woman, her beautiful singing and love for playing the piano brought joy to many in her church and at community musical productions. Teaching herself to sew as a teenager, she blessed not only her family but many friends with her quilts, socks and hand crafted items. Recently, Julie loved teaching classes at Michele’s Sewing & Vacuum in Blue Earth and attending Community Bible Study in Fairmont.

She is survived by: her children, Anita Peluso and her husband, Gary, of Redmond, WA; Jeff Willmert and his wife, Deidre, of Buffalo Center; and Stefan Willmert of Myrtle Beach, SC; and her grandchildren, Justin, Logan and his wife, Cassie, Amanda and Brandon Willmert.

She is preceded in death by: her parents; and her brother, Steven.

THELMA TURNBAUGH

August 2, 1913 - January 12, 2014

Thelma Turnbaugh, age 100 of Buffalo Center passed away Sunday January 12, 2014 at Rosewood Manor in Estherville.
 

Thelma Mary Heiman was born August 2, 1913 in Ionia, IA to Peter and Mary (Enenbach) Heiman. She graduated in 1931 from St. Angela's Academy for Girls in Carroll, IA. Immediately upon graduating from St. Angela's she taught school for several months until the new teacher arrived. In 1918 the family moved to a farm just outside Buffalo Center, Iowa (just north of the present football field). In 1947 she moved to 417 North Main and lived there until after 1980. She relocated to Oklahoma City from 1988 until 1993 before returning to Buffalo Center.

On May 12, 1947 she married Cletus Turnbaugh in Buffalo Center. Thelma worked as a bookkeeper at the Coop Station from March 1939 until December 1949. Then she joined the staff at Farmers Trust and Savings from January 1950 until retiring after 30 years of service in January of 1980.

Thelma was a lifetime member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, an active member of the Altar Society and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Thelma enjoyed collecting salt and peppershakers, hearing from family and friends, and playing cards (500). She and Cletus traveled to 48 of the 50 states and brought back outstanding stories and memories. A point of pride has always been the success of all of her family members. Each conversation pointed to the changes and new opportunities available to the next generation. Her home was a gathering point for family reunions and small gatherings. She loved Buffalo Center and bragged about graduates, school growth, and the improvements made to the community.

The last four years of her life she enjoyed the family like atmosphere of Rosewood Manor (Estherville). She is survived by several nieces/nephews, grand nieces/nephews, great nieces/nephews, and yes-great grand nieces/nephews.

Thelma is preceded in death by her 4 siblings Henry, Phil and Leon Heiman and her sister Agatha Thielke, her parents and her husband Cletus in 1980.

Mass time and services will be arranged at a later date with Winter Funeral Home and final internment at Graceland Cemetery, Buffalo Center, Iowa.

NORMAN J HAGEN

March 26, 1932 - January 11, 2014

Norman John Hagen was born March 26, 1932, in Freeborn County, the son of Norman G. and Julia (Aanrude) Hagen. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1950 and served on the USS Ulysses Minesweeper during the Korean War, he was honorably discharged in 1954.

He was united in marriage to Kaye Awe in 1966, to this union six children were born. Norman and Kaye farmed in northern Minnesota for sixteen years until moving to northern Iowa; here he worked for Fleetguard for thirteen years until retiring in 1997.

Norman enjoyed spending time at their cabin in Elysion, Minn., where he and his wife created many wonderful memories with family and friends. He also enjoyed hunting with his sons in northern Minnesota. Most of all Norman enjoyed the times he spent with his family. His best memories were made with his family and long-time friend Ellwood Hagen. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his wife, Kaye of Forest City; children, Kimberly (Kim) Laffey, Darin (Cyndi) Hagen, Valerie Eldridge (Doug Abbas), Nicole Hagen, Nathan (Nichole) Hagen and Jill (Jerad) Grunzke; grandchildren, Troy, Tia, Alyssa, Amber, Gretchen, Logan, Jaidyn, Hannah, Rose, Kayelin, Shyenne, Marriah, Isaiah, Gianna, Randy, Brennen and Charli; great-granddaughter, Averi Kruger; brother, Lloyd (Doris) Hagen; sisters, Phyllis “Sis” Blake, Shawn Hagen, and Dawn Williams and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Nolan “Bud” Hagen and wife Pat and Mervyl “Beeb” Hagen; brother-in-law, Richard Blake and sister, Norma Hagen.

KEITH D THOMPSON

October 5, 1938 - January 24, 2014

Keith D. Thompson, 75, of Britt, formerly of Forest City, died Friday, Jan. 24, 2014 at Westview Care Center in Britt.

A Celebration of Life service will be held 1 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 2, in the Round Up room at the Branding Iron in Thompson.

There will be no visitation. Cataldo Funeral Home in Britt is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the family in care of Cataldo Funeral Home, 178 First Ave. S.W., Britt, IA 50423.

Keith Dorn Thompson, the son of Dorn and Jeanette (Johnson) Thompson, was born Oct. 5, 1938 at Forest City. He attended Forest City Community Schools. Keith was united in marriage to Susan Cooley of Lake Mills. To this union two daughters were born, Kathy and Jill. The couple later divorced. Keith lived and worked in the Forest City area for most of his life. He enjoyed writing songs, animals, spending time at the Branding Iron in Thompson and especially, his family. Keith had a giving personality and big heart. He was often referred to as a man who would give the shirt off his back, even if it wasn't his.

He is survived by his two daughters, Kathy (Doug) Block of South St. Paul, Minn., and Jill (Terry) Black of Mason City; eight grandchildren, Cole Gilbertson, Haley (Billy) Offerman, Ali Gilbertson, Chase Gilbertson, Chance Gilbertson, Cody Black, Garrett Black and Mackenzie Black; three great-grandchildren; six siblings, Violet (Laurence) Loeschen of Woden, Dennis Thompson of Thompson, Robert "Dusty" (Cheri) Thompson of Currie, Minn., Doris Hatland of Lake Mills, Debra Kvammen of Lake Mills and DeEtta (Tim) Buns of Wilmington, N.C.; and many nieces and nephews.

VIVIAN E KIRBY

March 5, 1916 - January 22, 2014

Vivian E. Kirby, 97, of Humboldt, passed away Jan. 22, 2014 at the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital. A Mass of Christian Burial was held 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Humboldt with Fr. James Tigges officiating. Interment was in St. John’s Cemetery at Gilmore City. Visitation was 5-8 p.m. Friday at the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt. A parish rosary was at 5 p.m. and parish scripture service at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Vivian Elizabeth Sauter, the daughter of Will and Susan (Groetken) Sauter, was born March 5, 1916 on a farm near Varina, Iowa. She was raised and educated at Varina and graduated from St. Columbkille Catholic High School. Following her education, Vivian worked in a shoe store and as a telephone operator at Fonda. While attending a big band dance, Vivian met George Kirby and the couple was united in marriage on Dec. 31, 1940 at Varina. They farmed together near Gilmore City until their retirement in 1976 when they moved to Humboldt. Mr. Kirby passed away in September of 1978 at the age of 67.

Vivian was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church where she was active in many church activities. She enjoyed her participation in card club, traveling, reading, and was a member of the Gilmore City Bona Fide Study Club. She loved the time spent with her children and grandchildren and took time for daily prayer.

Mrs. Kirby is survived by her children, Marcia (Grant) Trygstad of Forest City, Mary Ann (Tom) Burns of Springfield, Ill., and Michael Kirby of Algona; daughter-in-law, Shirley Kirby of Peculiar, Mo.; 13 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Will and Susan (Groetken) Sauter; husband, George Kirby in 1978; son, Gary Kirby; and her brothers and sister.

Memorials will be made to St. Mary’s and St John’s Churches.


STEVEN LEE GLADSON

May 4, 1959 - January 25, 2014

Steven Lee Gladson, 54 of Forest City died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014 at his home surrounded by his family while under hospice care.

Funeral services were held 11 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 28, at Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 North Clark St. with Pastor Ed Bard, Chaplain-Hospice of North Iowa officiating. Visitation was held 9:30 a.m. until service time at the funeral home on Tuesday. Inurnment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Steven Gladson memorial fund in care of the family.

Steven Lee Gladson was born May 4, 1959 in Des Moines, the son of Stanley Lee and Stella Louise (Pugh) Gladson. At the age of six, the family moved to Dysart and Steve was raised there. At the age of 17 he enlisted in the United States Army. He was stationed at Fort Carson Colorado for the next seven years in the tank track mechanic and recovery unit. Steve enjoyed his time in the military and always took great pride in this.

On Dec. 27, 1983 he married Kathy Fowler, they raised four children together. He and his family moved to Forest City in 1988, he started employment with Winnebago Industries and worked in several departments, plastics, warehouse and part sales. Steve loved his family and he especially enjoyed the time he spent with his grandchildren, attending their sporting events and also loved taking them fishing. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He was survived by his wife, Kathy of Forest City; children, Wendy (Kevin) Wickman of Fairfax, Tammy Lyons of Forest City, Joshua Bohnstengel and fiancé Jen Nash of Forest City, Michael (Alison) Bohnstengel of Andalusia, Ill; father, Stanley Gladson of West Plaines, Mo.; siblings, Shirley Morgan of Montezuma, Ind., Stoney (Joyce) Gladson of Waterloo, John (Carleen) Gladson of Federal Way, Wash., Scott (Marie) Gladson of Dysart, and Sandy (Ron) Haws of West Plaines, Mo.; seven grandsons and many nieces and nephews.

Steve was preceded in death by his grandparents and his mother, Stella Gladson.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Hospice of North Iowa for all the wonderful care and support they have received over the past month.
