James “Jim” Ryburn,
Jr., 81
January 6, 2009
James "Jim" M. Ryburn, Jr., 81, of Britt, died on Friday,
January 2, 2009, at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in
Mason City.
Funeral services were held
at 10:30 a.m., on Monday, at the United Methodist Church in
Britt, with Rev. Robert Dodge officiating. Burial was in the
Evergreen Cemetery in Britt, with military rites by the
Britt Veterans Ceremonial Unit.
James Monroe Ryburn, Jr.,
the son of James and Emma (Hinrich) Ryburn, was born on
October 5, 1927 at Rockwell. He graduated from the Rockwell
High School in 1945 and served his country during WW II in
the U.S. Navy. On May 22, 1949, he married Shirley Ann
Hoover at Stilson. They farmed northwest of Britt until 1965
when they moved into Britt.
Jim had worked at
Winnebago Industries in Forest City and was the caretaker
at Evergreen Cemetery in Britt for a time. Jim also was a
bus driver for the West Hancock School District and for
Hancock County Transit.
Jim loved spending time
with his family. He enjoyed working with wood, playing 65,
fishing, gardening, collecting caps and hats and was an avid
Iowa Hawkeye fan. He was a member of the United Methodist
Church in Britt, the Britt American Legion and the I.O.O.F.
Lodge.
Jim is survived by his
five children and their families, Robert Ryburn of Texas and
his twin daughters, Maribell and Frances, both of Texas,
Cindy (Ted) Kopacek of Maple Grove, Minnesota and their
daughter, Heidi Kopacek of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Mark
Ryburn of Bloomington, Minnesota and his daughter, Desirae
(Michael) Lowell of Forest City and their two children, Nora
and Michael, Christy (Darryl) Dehn of Maple Grove, Minnesota
and their two sons, A.J. and Tyler both at home and Chad
(Christi) Ryburn of New Prague, Minnesota and their six
children, Julianna, James, Rebecca, Matthew, Savannah and
Luke all at home; a sister, Marjorie Sturges of Mason City;
and a sister-in-law, Jackie (Paul) MacVey of Ames.
He was preceded in death
by his wife, Shirley on January 8, 2006; his parents; a
brother, Bill Ryburn; and a sister, Ruth Ryburn.

Leonard J. Nelson,

Leonard J. Nelson, age 82, of rural Leland, died on
Saturday, January 3, 2009, at the Muse Norris Hospice
Inpatient Unit in Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services will be
held at 10:30 a.m., on Friday, January 9, 2009, at the
Bethany Lutheran Church in Thompson, Iowa, with Hospice
chaplain Rev. Jim Allard officiating. Burial will take place
in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Thompson, with military honors
conducted by the Leland VFW Post #6161. Visitation will be
on Thursday, January 8, from 5-7:00 p.m., at the Mittelstadt
Funeral Home in Lake Mills and will continue one hour prior
to the services at the church on Friday. Memorials may be
directed to Hospice of North Iowa.
Leonard J. Nelson, was
born on February 10, 1926, southeast of Thompson, Iowa, to
Peter Johan and Johanna (Opsal) Nelson, who came from
Norway. In the fall of 1940, Peter and Johanna bought the
Nelson farm, four miles west of Lake Mills and moved there
in March of 1941.
Leonard finished out his
freshman year at the Thompson High School by catching a ride
with the mailman, Dick Palmer. In the fall of 1941, Leonard
began school in Leland and graduated from the Leland High
School in 1944. He was drafted into the United States Army
in the summer of 1944. Leonard served in the Philippines and
Japan, being honorably discharged in 1945. Following which,
Leonard began farming with his father in June of 1949.
On November 24, 1950,
Leonard was united in marriage with Florence Torkelson. The
couple moved into his parents' home and in 1951, built a
smaller home on the same family farm. To this union three
children were born, Steven, Gary and Lori.
Leonard had a lifelong
love of farming. He also enjoyed hunting, taking trips to
Wyoming and Montana for antelope and deer, and he fished,
taking trips to Canada. Leonard was able to be a part of
more than 40 years of annual deer hunting trips to
Indianola, Iowa, with his friends, which later led to
teaching his sons, son-in-law, and grandsons the joy of the
sport of deer hunting.
In their retirement years,
Leonard and Florence enjoyed dancing and traveling in their
travel trailer to Texas, Montana, and Alaska. They spent 14
winters in Texas.
Leonard was a lifelong
member of the Bethany Lutheran Church in Thompson, Iowa. He
was very proud of his Norwegian heritage. He was active with
the Democratic party, National Farmers Organization, the
Leland VFW Post #6161 and on the Bethany Lutheran Church
Council.
Leonard is survived by his
best friend and loving wife, Florence of Leland; his three
children, Steven (Kathy) Nelson, Gary (Julie) Nelson and
Lori (David) Brekken, all of Lake Mills; and nine
grandchildren, Tony (Ashley) Nelson of Clear Lake, Derek
Nelson of Des Moines, Molly Nelson of Ames, Jason Brekken of
Savage, Minnesota, Grant Brekken of Iowa City, Peter Brekken
of Ames, Jacob Brekken of Lake Mills, Lisa Nelson of Lake
Mills and Taylor Nelson of Lake Mills; and by extended
relatives and many friends.
Preceding Leonard in death
were his parents, Peter and Johanna Nelson; and his father
and mother-in-law, Wallace and Ida Torkelson.

Mildred I. Groves,
89

Mildred I. Groves, age 89, of Forest City, died on Friday,
January 9, 2009, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit
in Mason City, Iowa.
Memorial services will be
held on Saturday, January 17, at 11:00 a.m., at the Immanuel
Lutheran Church in Forest City, with Pastor Rod Hopp and
Pastor Barb Spaulding officiating. Visitation will begin at
the church at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, January 17, and
continue until the time of the service. Inurnment will be in
the spring in the Oakland Cemetery in Forest City.
Mildred was born on
September 6, 1919, the daughter of James Elmer and Regina (Sponem)
Twito in Lake Mills, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at
the Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills. She graduated from
the Lake Mills Hills High School in 1939. She was in the
High School Choir and had a beautiful singing voice.
She married Orval Groves
of Forest City on July 23, 1942 at the Lutheran Parsonage in
Las Vegas, Nevada. They met at the Surf Ballroom in Clear
Lake and enjoyed dancing there for many years. To this union
four children were born, Marvo, DeAnna, Randy and Betty.
Orval and Mildred lived and farmed in Mt. Valley for many
years, moving to their present address in Forest City in
1964.
Mildred was a very giving
person, always thinking of others. Her life revolved around
her family. She loved spending time with her children,
grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Everyone loved going
to Grandma's. She will be remembered for her lemon meringue
pie and delicious cookies. She loved going on many trips
with her family. She was a wonderful Mom and Grandma. She
will be missed by her family and friends.
Mildred is survived by her
four children, Marvo Schmidt of Lake Havasu City, Arizona,
DeAnna Parkison of Forest City, Randy (Jan) Groves of Forest
City and Betty (Dave) Roenfanz of Ventura; grandchildren,
Todd Schmidt and Josh Schmidt of Lake Havasu City, Arizona,
Holly Eichmann and Matt Roenfanz of Garner, Jesse (Tiffany)
Groves, Dallas Groves, Josh (Syreeta) Groves, all of Forest
City and Edie (Dave) Hicks of Oregon; great-grandchildren,
Kalley and Hailey Schmidt, Cassie and Zachary Eichmann,
Blake, Rylea, Jayce and Logan Groves and one on the way; a
brother, Don (Dominy) Twito of Lake Mills; brother-in-law,
Waldon Groves of LaCenter, Washington; and many special
nieces and nephews.
Mildred was preceded in
death by her parents; her husband, Orval; sisters, Bernice
(Harold) Kjerland, Viola (Dale) Cooley, Myrtle (Bill)
Lammers, Fern (Ed) Hegel and Marge Twito; brothers, James,
Irving, Earl (Ag), Royden and Harold Twito; and several
nieces and nephews.

Heimendinger, 84
January 13, 2009
Jean M. Heimendinger, age 84, of Forest City, died on
Friday, January 9, 2009, at the Lake Mills Care Center in
Lake Mills, Iowa.
Funeral services will be
held on Wednesday, January 14, at 11:00 a.m., at the Bethel
Lutheran Brethren Church in rural Joice, with Pastor Kevin
Olson officiating. Visitation was held at the Petersen Lund
Funeral Home in Forest City, on Tuesday, January 13, from
4-7:00 p.m. and an hour prior to the services at the church.
Burial will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City,
Iowa.
Jean M. Heimendinger, was
born on a farm in rural Scarville, Iowa on October 12, 1924,
the daughter of Carl and Jenny (Degnepold) Olson. She
received her education in a rural school near her home and
graduated from the Scarville High School.
She married Gerald
Heimendinger on September 30, 1962 at the Little Brown
Church in Nashua, Iowa. The couple farmed northeast of
Forest City for many years, with Jean an active partner in
the operation. She was an excellent cook and very proud of
her Norwegian heritage.
The couple enjoyed taking
short trips together and Jean liked raising flowers. She
adored her grandchildren and treasured time spent with them.
Gerald passed away in 1992
and since then Jean has made her home with her son, David
and his family. Failing health forced her to enter the Lake
Mills Care Center in July of 2008. She died there on Friday,
January 9, 2009 at the age of 84 years.
Jean is survived by her
son, David and his wife, Mary Beth of Scarville, Iowa; two
beloved grandchildren, Adam and Zoe; a sister, Betsy Vaagen
of Forest City; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death
by her parents; her husband, Gerald; and a brother, Paul
Olson.

Vera Hanson, 95
January 13, 2009
Vera M. Hanson, 95, of Britt, was called home to be with the
Lord on Sunday, January 11, 2009, at the Westview Care
Center in Britt.
Funeral services will be
held on Tuesday, January 13, at 11:00 a.m., at the Britt
Evangelical Free Church in Britt, with Pastor Stan Johnson
officiating. Burial will take place in the Crystal Lake
Cemetery in Crystal Lake at 2:00 p.m. Visitation will be
held on Tuesday, January 13, one hour prior to the services
at the church.
Vera Hanson, the daughter
of Peter and Annie (Larson) Hanson, was born on July 10,
1913 on the family farm in Crystal Township, Iowa. She
attended school in the area graduating from the Crystal Lake
High School. After graduating, Vera attended college at
Waldorf, Iowa State Teacher's College (University of
Northern Iowa) and the University of Colorado, where she
received her Master's Degree in Education. Vera taught in
several schools in Iowa: Crystal Township #9, Maxwell,
Davenport and Mason City. She also taught in schools in
Illinois: Elmhurst and Rockford.
Vera was a member of the
First Evangelical Free Church in Rockford, Illinois, where
she was active in many organizations: WMS, Pioneer Girl
Leader, Branch Church-“Chapelwood” and as a Sunday School
Teacher. Vera was very happy whenever she could have her
Sunday School Class over for gatherings and parties at her
home.
Vera is survived by her
sister, Evelyn Dallman of Britt; along with several nieces,
nephews, other family members and friends.
She was preceded in death
by her parents, Peter and Annie Hanson; two brothers, Hilton
and Herbert Hanson; a foster sister, Florence; and a foster
brother, Orrin.
Vera's family suggests
memorials to the Britt Evangelical Free Church.

Mary Ellen Totten, 84, formerly of Forest City, died on
Monday, January 12, 2009, at the IOOF Home, Mason City.
A Funeral Mass was held on
Wednesday, January 14, at the Holy Family Catholic Church in
Mason City, with Rev. Jon M. Seda, officiating. Burial was
in the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City. Visitation
was held at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel in Mason
City, with a scriptural wake service on Tuesday, January 13.
Mary Ellen Totten, was
born on April 29, 1924 at Mason City a daughter of J. Frank
and Ellen (Rodewald) Hayes. She was a 1942 graduate of the
Mason City High School. She was a former National medalist
in solo vocal music competition, in 1941. Mary Ellen
attended Iowa State Teachers College, Cedar Falls and the
Chicago Musical College, Chicago, Illinois. She was married
to Arthur R. “Bud” Totten on February 7, 1945 in Mason City.
To this union two daughters were born, Mary DeLaine and
Debra Kay. Mary Ellen and her husband owned and operated the
Perry & Totten Hardware in Forest City from 1945-62.
She was a member of the
Holy Family Catholic Church, Mason City.
Mary Ellen is survived by
her daughter, Debra Kay Ryan and her husband, Thomas of
Mason City; granddaughter, Tara Ryan of Lake Mills;
grandson, Matthew Ryan of Mason City; and a special friend,
Bud Burgess of Mason City.
She was preceded in death
by her parents; husband, Arthur R. Totten; daughter, Mary
DeLaine Daugherty; and brother, John Francis “Jack” Hayes.

Mattis, 86
January 20, 2009
Catherine M. Mattis, 86, of Garner, died on Sunday, January
18, 2009, at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.
Funeral services will be
held at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, at the St. Boniface
Catholic Church in Garner, with Fr. Brian Dellaert
officiating. Burial will be in the St. Boniface Catholic
Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4-7:00 p.m., on
Wednesday, at the Cataldo Funeral Home in Garner, with a CD
of A Rosary at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour
prior to the services at the church.
Catherine Marie Mattis,
the daughter of Oscar and Sarah (Peacock) Dennis, was born
on May 1, 1922 at Centerville. Her mother died 27 days after
she was born. At the request of her father she was then
raised by her maternal grandparents She attended the St.
Mary's Catholic School and graduated from the Centerville
High School with honors in 1940. She continued her education
graduating from the Ottumwa Heights College in Ottumwa in
1942. On August 22, 1944, she was married to John T. Mattis
of Albia, at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in
Centerville. They made their home in Albia where John was a
teacher and Catherine worked as secretary to the principal
at the Albia High School. In 1947, they moved to Garner.
While raising her family
she was a costume coordinator/seamstress for the Evelyn
Wheaton Dance School, a florist for Blossom Shop and in 1958
went to work as a part-time clerk for the Iowa Liquor
Commission. In January of 1976, she became manager until her
retirement in 1985. Catherine was the Garner correspondent
from 1970 to 1975 for the Globe Gazette, Des Moines Register
and KGLO. She enjoyed singing, puzzles, sports, playing
cards, dancing, golfing, fishing and activities with her
family.
Catherine was an active
member of the St. Boniface Catholic Church where she served
as a lector, Rosary Society, St. Boniface Choir and Catholic
Daughter of the Americas. She belonged to the Garner
Women's Golf Association, Music Boosters, Music City Chorus
of Sweet Adelines and participated in the Garner Lions
Minstrel Show. She was a past Boy Scout and Girl Scout troop
leader and was a volunteer back-up caller for the Garner
Ambulance Service.
Catherine is survived by
her children, Michael (Judi) Mattis of Goose Lake, Ann
(Larry) Hagen of Britt, Barbara (Larry) Eenhuis of Garner,
John Mattis of Garner and Mark (Tina) Mattis of Torrington,
Wyoming; fourteen grandchildren, Nicholas and Jeffery
Mattis, Vance (Cindy) Hagen, Travis (Jamie) Hagen, Jason
Eenhuis, Jeremy (Shelly) Eenhuis, Lucas Eenhuis, Yvette
(Mike Ohotto) Mattis, Johnny and Zackery Mattis, Amber
Mattis, Courtney Mattis, Matthew (Leane) Mattis and Ashley
Mattis; seventeen great-grandchildren; and many nieces and
nephews.
She was preceded in death
by her husband, John T. Mattis in January of 1978; her
parents; and a daughter-in-law, Yvonne Mattis; and special
friend, Lynford Back.

Vernon R. Ricklefs,
83

Vernon R. Ricklefs, 83, died at the Titonka Care Center on
Saturday morning, January 24, 2009.
Vernon Roy Ricklefs, was born on July 7, 1925, to Harry and
Tressie (Spear) Ricklefs in rural Titonka. He attended
country school through the 8th grade and was confirmed at
the Good Hope Lutheran Church. On June 29, 1949, Vernon
married Darlene Seefeld. Five children blessed this
marriage, Gayle, Donna, Veryl, Kristin and Michael. Vernon
farmed north of Titonka his entire life until giving way to
his son, Veryl. Over the years he raised not only corn,
soybeans and hay but also sheep, dairy cows, hogs, and
chickens. He also worked for the A.S.C.S. office for many
years.
Vernon had a deep love for
his family and was always willing to lend a helping hand to
any member of his family that needed it. Vernon loved to
visit and enjoyed Sunday afternoon visits with friends and
family. He was a member of the Ramsey Reformed Church of
Rural Titonka.
Vernon is survived by five
children, Gayle and Mark Mayer, Donna and Ronald Irlmeier,
Veryl Ricklefs, Kristin and Dale Gerdes and Michael and
Denise Ricklefs; twelve grandchildren, Jason Irlmeier, Allen
and Janet Irlmeier, Kenneth and Kami Irlmeier, Lucas Gerdes,
David Mayer, Michael and Mindy Mayer, Marie Irlmeier, Julie
and Terry Valentine, Jamie Gerdes, Laura Irlmeier, Kaitlin
Ricklefs and Kassandra Ricklefs; six great-grandchildren,
Dillon Gerdes, Macy Schwering, Dalton Schwering, Evan
Irlmeier, Jacob Schwering and Allison Irlmeier; sister,
Betty Phelps; brother, Melvin and Loretta Ricklefs;
sister-in-law, Mildred Ricklefs; and many nieces and
nephews.
He was preceded in death
by his wife, Darlene; his parents; and a brother, Harold
Ricklefs.

Lena Harms, 96

Lena Harms, 96, of Buffalo Center, died on Sunday, January
25, 2009, at the Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo
Center, where she had made her home since the summer of
2001.
Funeral services were held
on Saturday, January 31, at the First Reformed Church in
Buffalo Center, with Pastor Bill Peake officiating. Burial
took place in the Olena Mound Cemetery in Buffalo Center.
Visitation was one hour before the services at the church on
Saturday.
Lena is survived by her
children including, Audrey Sonnenberg and her husband,
Russell of Forest City.

Alvin Boettcher, 90
February 3, 2009
Alvin Boettcher, 90, of Lakota, Iowa, died on Monday,
January 26, 2009, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit
in Mason City.
Funeral services were held
on Saturday, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Lakota, with
Pastor Marino Melstad officiating. Burial was in St. Paul
Lutheran Cemetery in Lakota. Visitation was on Friday, at
the St. Paul Lutheran Church and one hour before the
services at the church.
Alvin is survived by a son
and two daughters, including Colleen Schmidt of Forest City;
seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Doris G. Hovda, 80
February 3, 2009
Doris G. Hovda, 80, of Forest City, died on Monday, January
26, 2009, at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.
Funeral services were held
at 11:00 a.m., on Friday, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in
Forest City, with Rev. Rod Hopp officiating. Burial will be
in the spring in the Forest Home Cemetery in Leland.
Visitation was held from 4-7:00 p.m., on Thursday, at the
Petersen Lund Funeral Home in Forest City and continued one
hour prior to the services at the church. Memorials may be
given in her name.
Doris Adele Hovda, the
daughter of G.W. and Adele (Ranum) Goodnight, was born on
July 18, 1928 on a farm near Knob Noster, Missouri. She
moved with her family in 1938 to a farm near Buffalo Center
and graduated from the Buffalo Center High School in 1946.
Doris received her normal training at Iowa State Teachers
College in Cedar Falls and taught in the rural schools of
Winnebago County. On December 20, 1947, she was married to
Ernest Joseph Hovda at the Ellis Point Methodist Church near
Buffalo Center. They lived on various farms in Winnebago
County until 1964, when they moved to Leland. In 1967, they
moved into Forest City. Doris had worked at Fryer Farms,
Juen's Highway Cafe, Grohaven Nursing Home and Winnebago
Industries, where she retired in 1993.
She enjoyed spending time
with her family, gardening, quilting, genealogy, going to
auctions and traveling. Her favorite trip was traveling to
Norway with Ernest in 1977 to visit relatives. Doris
attended the Trinity Lutheran Church in Forest City.
She is survived by her
children, Caryn (Roger) Schueler of Ottawa, Illinois, Ted
(Susan) Hovda of Garner, Nancy (Donald) Stanford of
Riverside, California, Mary (Jim) Lund of Forest City and
Patty (Randy) Volsen of Clear Lake; grandchildren, Tim
(Mary) Schueler, Scott (Kim) Schueler, Chris (Heather)
Schueler, Jamie (Maggie) Hovda, Lee (Katie) Hovda, Margaux
Hovda, Nikki Stanford, Corrie Stanford, Michael (Diane)
Lund, Jeffrey Lund, Gary Lund, Ashley Volsen and Joshua
Volsen; ten great grandchildren; two brothers, Alan (Joan)
Goodnight of Ft. Myers, Florida and Charles Goodnight of
Bricelyn, Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death
by her husband, Ernest on December 13, 1991; her parents; a
great granddaughter, Kristen Schueler; and a brother,
William Goodnight.

Barbara Ann
Woebbeking, 76
February 3, 2009
Barbara Ann Woebbeking, 76, of Gladbrook, Iowa, entered into
eternal life on Tuesday, January 27, 2009, while under the
care of the Cedar Valley Hospice at the Grundy County
Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services were held
at 10:00 a.m., on Friday, January 30, at the St. John's
Lutheran Church in Reinbeck, with Pastor Bruce Boyce
officiating. Burial followed in the Reinbeck Cemetery in
Reinbeck. Visitation was on Thursday, January 29, from
4-8:00 p.m., with the family present to greet friends at the
St. John's Lutheran Church in Reinbeck.
Barbara Ann Woebbeking,
was born on November 5, 1932, at her home near Hoagland,
Indiana. She was the daughter of Ludoph and Malinda
Scheumann. Barbara attended the St. John's Lutheran School
in Decatur, Indiana and graduated from the Concordia
Lutheran High School in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. On August 27,
1955, she married Vernold Woebbeking. Together they were
blessed with four children, Deb, Doug, Duane and Dorcas Dee.
They lived near Woodburn, Indiana for eleven years. On
February 16, 1966, they moved to Gladbrook, Iowa, to begin a
farming career together. Barbara worked along the side of
her husband on the family farm until retirement.
Barbara was a faithful and
devoted member of the St. John's Lutheran Church in Reinbeck
where she enjoyed sharing her faith with others. She was a
member of the Dorcas Society, District LWML, Sunday School
Teacher and President and Secretary of the Thrivent Chapter
in Grundy County. She was a member of the Gladbrook Women's
Club, Gladbrook Lion's Club, Women's Auxiliary and was a 4-H
Leader. One of Barbara's joys in life was supporting her
children and grandchildren and having family gatherings.
Left to cherish her memory
are her husband, Vernold Woebbeking; and her four children,
Deb (Dennis) Kruger of Britt, Doug Woebbeking of Newton,
Duane (Laura) Woebbeking of Gladbrook and Dorcas Dee (Allen)
Burt of Marshalltown; grandchildren, Dawn (John) Stoakes,
Darrin Kruger, Darcy Kruger, Daniel Kruger, Brandon
Woebbeking, Taylor Woebbeking, Ryan (Cindy) Woebbeking,
Shauna (Ben) Smith, Blake Woebbeking, Dustin Woebbeking,
Andrew Burt, Matthew Burt, Michael Burt and Jacob Burt;
brothers and sisters, Maurice (Kay) Scheumann of Hoagland,

M. Genevieve Bainter, 93, of Eldridge, Iowa, passed away on
Saturday, January 31, 2009, at the Davenport Good Samaritan
Center.
Funeral services will be
held on Wednesday, February 4, at the Edwards Congregational
Church in Davenport. Visitation was on Tuesday, at the Runge
Mortuary. Burial will be in the Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery
in Cedar Rapids. Memorials may be made to the Edwards
Congregational Church.
Genevieve married H. Keith
Bainter in 1937 in Danville. He preceded her in death in
1974. The family moved to Forest City in 1961 and retired to
the Quad Cities in 1974.
