Carl C. Larsen, 83, of Fertile, died on Wednesday, January 1, 2003, at the Lake Mills Care Center. 

Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 4, at the Fertile Lutheran Church in Fertile. The Reverends Marlin Snyder and Merlin Norris officiated. Burial was in the North Prairie Cemetery in rural Scarville, with the Petersen Lund Funeral Home in Forest City in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Alice; a daughter, Nancy and son-in-law, Dennis Faber of Fertile; three grandsons, Tim Faber and his wife, Brooke of Ft. Meyers, Florida, Tom Faber of Rochester, Minnesota and Edward Faber of Fertile; two sisters, Josephine Larsen and Lorraine Diederichs of Minneapolis; three brothers, John (Betty) Larsen of Fargo, North Dakota, Harold Larsen of Moorhead, Minnesota and Kenneth (Lois) Larsen of Sarasota, Florida; and brother-in-law, Bob Chesley of Brunswick, Maine.

January 8, 2003

Elizabeth A. Robinson, 60, of Marshall, Missouri, formerly of Forest City, died unexpectedly of a heart attack on Wednesday, January 1, 2003, at the Fitzgibbon Hospital in Marshall.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, January 7, at the First Baptist Church in Forest City. The Rev. George Kalb officiated.

Survivors include her husband, Ron of Marshall; a daughter, Charlene and her husband, Jim Stienstra of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and their two children, Christopher and Laura; a sister, Jane Hagen of Fargo, North Dakota; two nieces, Amy and Loren; and aunts, uncles and cousins.

January 8, 2003

Walter E. Campney, 92, of Clear Lake, died on Thursday, January 2, 2003, at the I.O.O.F. Home in Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Monday, January 6, at the United Methodist Church in Clear Lake. The Reverends Jan Burnett and Rebecca Campney Carver officiated. Burial was in the East Lawn Memorial Cemetery in Algona, with the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel in Clear Lake in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include his son, Richard Campney and his wife, Elaine; two grandchildren, Benjamin Campney and Rev. Rebecca Campney Carver and her husband, Phil; a daughter-in-law, JoAnn Campney; great-grandchild, Joel Carver; two step-daughters, Arlene Bruns and JoAnn Stevens and their families; three step-grandchildren, Lori Damman and her husband, Steve, Kevin Cole and his wife, Cherie and Tim Cole; six step-great-grandchildren; two step-great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Beulah Davis of Algona and Clarice Buscher and her husband, John of Mesa, Arizona; and a brother, Harold Campney of Spirit Lake.

Raymond Lewis Rapp, 92, of Forest City, died on Friday, January 3, 2003, at the Muse Norris Hospice in Mason City.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Dorothy of Forest City; three sons, Paul, Tim and his fiancée, Lynn Sonnerman and Ted and his wife, Sarah; two daughters, Janine and Polly and her husband, Frank Miller; a sister, Mildred Hernon of Forest City; two half-sisters, Shirley Netlund and Alice Rayhons, both of Garner; a half-brother, John Rapp of Caney, Kansas; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Ty Gary Carlson, 65, died on Saturday, January 4, 2003, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

He is survived by four aunts; two uncles; and many cousins and friends.

Dagny Nelsine Aadsen, 81, of Kiester, Minnesota, died on Sunday, January 5, 2003, at the Lake Mills Care Center.

Funeral services were held on Friday, January 10, at the Scarville Evangelical Lutheran Church, Scarville. Pastor Thomas Rank officiated. Burial was in the Scarville Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery. The Mittelstadt Funeral Home in Lake Mills was in charge of the arrangements.

Bethany Belle Dirksen, infant daughter of Arlen and Ruth Ann Dirksen of Woden, was born at 8:30 p.m., on Sunday, January 5, 2003 and died at 8:31 p.m.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, January 9, at the Calvary Baptist Church in Forest City. The Rev. Doug Farrell officiated. Music was provided by Sheryl Johnson, organist; Becky Guess and Debbie Pitcher with a recorded duet; and soloist, Lori Farrell.

Honorary bearers were her sisters and brothers, Alison, Zachary, Natalie and Jeremy Dirksen. Burial was in the Bingham Township Cemetery, Woden, with the Winter Funeral Home in Thompson in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include her parents, Arlin and Ruth Ann Dirksen of Woden; her siblings, Alison, Zachary, Natalie and Jeremy; maternal grandparents, Edgar and Vada Belle of Raytown, Missouri; and several aunts and uncles.

Alyce Nelson, 99, of Lake Mills, died on Monday, January 6, 2003, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, following a brief illness with pneumonia and a fractured hip earlier in the day.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, January 9, at the Sion Lutheran Church in rural Lake Mills. The Rev. Tom Hage officiated. Burial was in the Bristol Cemetery, rural Joice. The Mittelstadt Funeral Home in Forest City was in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include son, VeRone and wife, Bonnie Nelson of El Dorado Springs, Missouri; daughter-in-law, Fern Nelson and granddaughter, Doreen and husband, Jim Carter, all of Woodbury, Minnesota; granddaughter, Deb and husband, Jim Scholten of Sioux City; great-grandchildren, Jessica and husband, Ryan McIntosh, J.D. Viola "Bobbie" Dahl, 95, of Emmons, Minnesota, died on Tuesday, January 7, 2003, at the St. John's Lutheran Home, where she had been a resident since January 2.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 11, at the Emmons Lutheran Church. The Rev. Julie Fiske officiated. Burial was in the Oak Lawn Cemetery at Emmons.

M. Robert McCarey, 61, of Clear Lake, died on Friday, January 17, 2003, at the St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., today Wednesday, January 22, at the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Clear Lake. Msgr. Robert Hogan will officiate. Burial will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery. The Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel in Clear Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, a scholarship fund is being established in his name. Donations may be made to the Robert McCarey Scholarship Fund in care of Clear Lake Bank and Trust, Clear Lake, Iowa or a memorial contribution may be made to the charity of one's choice.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia of Clear Lake; two sons, Robert James (R.J.) McCarey and his wife, Julie of Newton and Brian McCarey and his wife, Kathy of Carroll; his mother, Bertha McCarey Krawiec of Middletown, New York; three brothers, John McCarey and his wife, Winifred of Middletown, New York, Leo McCarey and his wife, Sharon of Greenville, New York and James McCarey and his companion, Brenda Cosner of Middletown, New York; a sister, Audrey Murray and her husband, Harold R. of Middletown, New York; a sister-in-law, Dorothy McCarey of Middletown, New York; six grandchildren, Katelyn Elizabeth, Harrison Robert, Andrew Patrick, Erin Marie, Austin Patrick and Meghan Elizabeth; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Gene Clair Brown, 75, of Galt, California, died on Saturday, January 18, 2003, in a Galt convalescent hospital following a long illness. He was born on October 23, 1927, in Winnebago County.

A graveside committal service was held in the Galt Arno Cemetery, with Rev. Brandon Austin of the North Sacramento United Methodist Church officiating.

He is survived by his sons, Charles Brown of Paris, Texas, Steven Brown of Ione, California and Donald Brown of Yuba City, California; daughter, Debra Brown of Galt; sisters, Ruby Irene, Lola Myrene, Ethel Vioan and Eva Mae; brother, Allen Leroy; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Anna M. Agresta, 83, a resident of Santa Clara County, California for 49 years, died on Tuesday, January 21, 2003, at the Stanford Medical Center. 

Memorial services were held on Saturday, January 25, at the home of James Narveson in Santa Clara, California. Contributions can be made to the American Heart Association, Oakland, California.

Anna M. Agresta, the daughter of Andrew and Vera Narveson, was born on January 28, 1919 in Forest City. She was married to the late Anthony F. Agresta for 43 years. Her siblings include Dorothy Melvin of North Carolina, Donald Narveson of Waterloo, James Narveson of Santa Clara and the late John Narveson.

She was a former Army nurse.

Duane Ronald Langerud, 72, of Lake Mills and Fountain Lakes, Estero, Florida, died on Wednesday, January 22, 2003, of a heart ailment at the Lee Memorial Health Park in Ft. Myers, Florida.

Funeral services were held on Friday, January 24, at the Walter Shikanys Bonita Funeral Home in Bonita Springs, Florida. The Rev. John Buuck, pastor of the Hope Lutheran Church, officiated.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Myrna Langerud of Lake Mills and Estero, Florida; son and daughter-in-law, Alan and Mary Langerud of Plymouth, Minnesota; two daughters and their husbands, Ann and Jay Benzshawel of West Des Moines and Amber and Jeff Hollar, also of West Des Moines; three brothers, Calmer (Muriel) Langerud of Clear Lake and Mesa, Arizons, Ernest (Sue) Langerud of Lake Mills and David Langerud of Minneapolis, Minnesota; sister, Sally (Jim) Bevan of Ottumwa and Ft. Zimry Jean Loeschen, Infant

January 29, 2003

Zimry Jean Loeschen, eight days old, died on Wednesday, January 22, 2003, at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City. Zimry, infant daughter of Duane and Deanna (Palmer) Loeschen, was born five weeks premature, weighing a healthy six pounds, 14.8 ounces, on Tuesday, January 14, 2003, in Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 25, at the Evangelical Free Church in Britt. The Rev. Peter Schmidlkofer officiated. Music was provided by Jana Loeschen and Nancy Loeschen, accompanied by Carol Schmidlkofer. Burial was on Monday, January 27, in the Elmwood Cemetery in Mason City. The Ewing Funeral Chapel in Britt was in charge of the arrangements.

Zimry is survived by her parents, Duane and Deanna Loeschen of Woden; sister, Brittany of Algona; maternal grandmother, Twila Luker and her husband, Norm of Mason City; maternal grandfather, Nelson Palmer and his wife, Toni of Vancouver, Washington; paternal grandmother, Ardith Loeschen of Forest City; maternal great-grandmother, Jean Fry of Mason City; maternal great-grandfather, Arnold Luker of Mason City; paternal great-grandmother, Elida Brandt of Titonka; and numerous aunts and uncles.

She was preceded in death by grandfather, Neal Loeschen; great-grandparents, David and Mildred Palmer; great-grandfather, Fred Mills; great-grandmother, Ethel Luker; great-grandfather, Darwin Fry; and great-grandfather, Harley Brandt.

Edmund Draheim Sr., 90

Edmund Draheim Sr., 90, of Owatonna, Minnesota, died on Thursday, January 23, 2003, at the Cedarview Nursing Home in Owatonna.

Funeral services were held on Monday, January 27, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Owatonna. The Rev. John Lestock officiated. Burial was in the Oakwood Cemetery in Austin, Minnesota, with the Michaelson Funeral Homes of Owatonna in charge of the arrangements. Memorials are preferred to the Cedarview Reflection Room or the Trinity Lutheran Church.

Survivors include three sons, Edmund Jr. and Jane Draheim of Owatonna, Charles and Peggy Draheim of Mankato and David Draheim of Forest City; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Barbara Rupkalvis of Rochester, Minnesota and Leora Quandt of Grand Meadow, Minnesota; along with many nieces and nephews.

Norman S. Rye, 84, of Fertile, died on Friday, January 24, 2003, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Monday, January 27, at the Fertile Lutheran Church. The Rev. Marlin Snyder officiated. Burial was in the Brush Point Cemetery, rural Fertile, with the Petersen Lund Funeral Home in Forest City in charge of the arrangements.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Maxine Rye of Fertile; a daughter, Julie Abendschein and husband, Robert of Hampton; sons, James and wife, Susan of Des Moines and David and wife, Valerie of Golden, Colorado; four grandchildren, Lisa Wicks and husband, LeRoy of Clarion, David Abendschein of Ames, Matthew Abendschein of Hampton and Katie Rye of Golden, Colorado; two great-granddaughters, Ashley and Margaret Wicks; and many nieces, nephews and many dear friends.

Opal G. Olsen, 90, formerly of Thompson, died on Friday, January 24, 2003, at the Lake Mills Care Center.

Memorial services were held on Monday, January 27, at the Thompson United Methodist Church. The Rev. Wendy Trone officiated. Burial will be in the spring in the Linden Lutheran Cemetery, rural Thompson. The Petersen Lund Funeral Home in Forest City was in charge of the arrangements.

She is survived by her children, Vernon Olsen and wife, Karen of Flower Mound, Texas, Gary Olsen and wife, Kay of Thompson, Merle Olsen and wife, Ethel of Hutchinson, Minnesota, Sheryl Olsen of Lake Mills and Terry Olsen and wife, Kathy of Forest City; 14 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

Harold Sherwood, 66, of Lake Mills, died on Sunday, January 26, 2003, at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., on Thursday, January 30, at the Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills. The Rev. Kevin Mackey will officiate. Burial will be in the Salem Memorial Cemetery. Visitation is from 4-7:00 p.m., today Wednesday, at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home in Lake Mills and again one hour before the services at the church.

He is survived by his wife, Josephine of Lake Mills; five children, David and April Sherwood of Rockwell, Julie Sherwood of Forest City, Harlan Sherwood of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Paul Sherwood of Joice and Fern and Bob Zabel of Lake Mills; four grandchildren, Courtney Sherwood, Andrew and Joshua Zabel and Clancy Sherwood; one sister, Rosemary and her husband, John Spratt of Webster City; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Oswald Hagen Thorson, a fellow of the American Institute of Architecture, died on Sunday, January 26, 2003, in Seattle, Washington.

Survivors include his children, Sigrin (Jon) Newell and Thor (Donna) Thorson; grandchildren, Andy Newell (Kelly Donahue) and Ray (Adriana) Newell; his brother, Phil (Marit) Thorson; and brother-in-law, Don (Darlene) Rustad; as well as many much loved nieces and nephews.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Flintofts Issaquah Funeral Home, Issaquah, Washington.

Survivors include a daughter, Bonnie Betts of Madison Lake, Minnesota; a son, Barry K. Jack Norman Prestholt Sr., 70, of Clear Lake, died on Wednesday, January 29, 2003, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit of North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 1, at the Clear Lake United Methodist Church. The Rev. Jan Burnett officiated. Burial was in the Clear Lake Cemetery, with military honors conducted by the Clear Lake V.F.W. The Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel in Clear Lake was in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Prestholt of Clear Lake; one son, Jack Prestholt Jr. and his wife, Betty of Mason City; two daughters, Jill Scharper and her husband, Kevin of Forest City and Julie Gobeli and her husband, Tracey of Mason City; nine grandchildren, Aaron, James, Derek Prestholt and his wife, Dawn, Haleigh, Carly, Riley and Russell Scharper and Abbie and Catherine Gobeli; four great-grandchildren, D.J., Devon, Drew and Delanie Prestholt.

Joseph C. Hadacek Jr., 67, of Duncan, died on Wednesday, January 29, 2003, at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 1, at the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan. Fr. Jerry Blake was celebrant. Lector was Jan Sweeney. Altar servers were Rusty Hadacek and Mike Hadacek.
