RONALD D MONSELLE
April 19, 1936 - July 7, 2013

Ronald D. Monselle, 77, of Forest City, died Sunday, July 7, 2013 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m., Thursday, July 11, at Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St., Forest City.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 12, 2013 at Crown Hill Cemetery in Ruthven.

Ron was born April 19, 1936, in Spencer, to Marland and Minnie (Jones) Monselle. He attended school in Ruthven. After graduation from high school, he attended college, graduating in 1958 from Wayne State College in Wayne, Neb.

Ron began his teaching career in 1958 in West Bend, where he taught math, science, physical education, drivers training and coached girls basketball.  In 1966, he began teaching in the Woden-Crystal Lake Schools.  He taught math, science, drivers education and coached girls basketball and softball.  There, he met and married Susan Gasner, of Owatonna, Minn. He remained at Woden-Crystal Lake Schools for 28 years, until his retirement in 1994.

Ron loved retirement.  He had so many activities that he could pursue without time restraints.  He hunted ducks, geese, coyotes and fox; not to mention deer. He dabbled in some trapping of muskrat and mink, and he went fishing for walleyes, crappies, and  northern’s. His biggest challenge was muskies, which he fished tirelessly in Minnesota and Canada. So many fish, so little time. Now he could do it all year long, and he did. Of course, the most fun was the anticipation of the hunt, and the extraordinary people who were in on the hunt - invaluable and lifetime friends who enriched his life and memories.

Even though his illness left him weakened and in pain, he tackled each day with a spirit that should be emulated.  Well done.

Ron is survived by his wife, Susan; his brother, David Monselle of Tulsa, Okl.; two nieces, Danielle (Greg) Owen of Skiatook, Okl., and Lyndsy Monselle of Tulsa, Okl.; and his red Corvette.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

David’s passion in life was his music. An avid guitar player since his teenage years he kept with his practicing in order to perfect. David enjoyed the old time music he learned from his dad and enjoyed many good times playing the guitar with his “pa” on the fiddle while his “ma” kept time with the beat. Later in life David enjoyed playing blue-grass and gospel guitars with his wife, Cindy. To add to the “sound” of the music David was becoming an enthusiastic harmonica player and loved learning to achieve that “bluesy” sound. His talent with his music seemed endless, effortlessly playing the guitar and harmonica together at the same time.

Photography was another interest that David pursued with vivacity. It was not only the capturing of the moment of the photo, but what he could do with the photograph afterwards to make it better, make it fun, or just make someone laugh. David’s creativity when it came to photography never stopped and he left behind many pictures to be treasured over the years.

EDWARD A BRANSTAD
March 9, 1924 - July 26, 2013

Edward A. Branstad, 89, of Leland, died Friday, July 26, 2013 at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, July 29 at Waldorf College, Waldorf Atrium, 106 S. 6th St. in Forest City, with Msgr. Frank Bognanno, Pastor Jon Rollefson and Pastor Joyce Schmidt officiating. Burial was at Forest Home Cemetery in Leland.

Visitation was held from 4 to 7 p.m., Sunday, July 28 at Waldorf College,  Salveson Hall in Forest City and continued one hour prior to services at the Atrium. Petersen Lund Funeral Home in Forest City is in charge of arrangements.

Edward was born on March 9, 1924, to Helmer and Hazel (Peterson) Branstad, and grew up on the farm that has been in his family for 130 years. Edward attended Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Leland, where he was confirmed. Upon graduation from Leland High School, Edward attended Waldorf College in Forest City. He then returned to his family farm with his wife, Rita, where they were both lifelong farmers. His sons recall that after the family would work the farm in a typical 14-hour day, Edward’s regular comment when they walked in the house was, “We didn’t get much done today. We will give it heck tomorrow.” That work ethic was shown repeatedly. During the mid-century drought and farm crisis, Edward and Rita helped the farm survive by taking second jobs. Again, during the farm crisis of the 1980s, Edward took a second job working as the county Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS) director. After leaving the office, he would return to the farm, often working until midnight. When Edward turned 70, he vowed to work no more than 10-hour days. He never met that goal. Friends and family note that Edward would help anyone. He would stop to help any stranded motorist. He mowed the neighbors’ lawns and he took time to teach farmers how to be in ASCS compliance. As Edward entered his 80s, he found he was able to relax when he and Enolia traveled to Donna, Texas, where they spent their winters. His family notes, however, that when he returned most of his stories were about helping neighbors fix up their homes or about traveling to Mexico to do missionary work.

Edward was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Rita (Garland) Branstad.

He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Enolia Wing Branstad; two sons, Terry (Chris) Branstad of Des Moines and Monroe (Lanette) Branstad of Leland; grandchildren, Christine (David Phillips) Branstad, Eric (Adrianne) Branstad, Allison (Jerry) Costa, Heidi (Tom) Aitchison, Jordan Branstad, Marcus (Nicole) Branstad, Andrew (Keniesa) Branstad and David Branstad; great-grandchildren, Samuel Branstad Phillips, Thomas Branstad Phillips, Mackenzie Branstad, Madison Branstad, Gabriel Branstad, Bridget Branstad, Maximillian Aitchison, Addison Aitchison, Sofia Costa, Alexis Branstad and Estelle Branstad; and three siblings, Carl (Lorraine) Branstad, Helene Iverson and Hubert (Fern) Branstad.

Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society or Hospice of North Iowa.
