Costa Mesa, CA. A funeral service
will be held Saturday, April 27 at
10:30 a.m. in Zion Lutheran Church,
Rake. Burial Will be at East
Cemetery by Rake.
Robert Harold
Johnson was born at home on January
10, 1927, to Ruth (Marsaa) and
Harold Johnson, on the family farm
near Rake. He was delivered by Dr.
Russ, the local physician, who
traveled by sleigh to reach the
Johnson farm. Robert. was the middle
son of three.
Robert was
baptized and confirmed at Zion
Lutheran Church in Rake. He
graduated from Rake High School in
1944. He married Helen Jacobson of
Rake on November 29, 1947. Together,
they raised their three children on
the family farm, which Robert took
over farming in 1949. He worked hard
raising livestock and working his
fields to Produce soybeans and corn.
In 1985, Robert
and Helen attended the ceremony to
obtain their Century Family Farm
award. He was the third generation
farmer of the Johnson family farm
located west of Rake. Robert and
Helen hosted many holiday family
dinners, always had the coffee pot
on for drop-in visitors, and enjoyed
playing cards with friends.
Robert was a
community volunteer at church,
school, and various other community
events. He was on the Christmas Tree
Committee at Zion Lutheran Church
for many years, handing out candy
and decorating the Christmas trees
each holiday season. He served as
Treasurer for Zion Lutheran Church
and volunteered on the Cemetery
Board. Robert was employed as the
Winnebago County Weed Commissioner
for several years. He also loyally
cared for his parents in their later
lives, which allowed them to
continue living in their own home as
long as possible.
Robert's main
pastime was fishing, and he made
many summertime treks on fishing
trips with friends and family "Up
North" and into Canada, to search
for the elusive walleye. He and
Helen purchased acreage in the woods
of Northern Wisconsin, where they
built a cabin and spent many
weekends fishing on the Yellow
River. For several years, he
co-owned an icehouse, which he and
his fishing partner visited often in
the midst of the Arctic-like Iowa
winter. Robert was also an avid
reader, often offering his latest
recommendation of a good book and
making frequent jaunts to the local
library. He was especially
interested in history of the Old
West.
After retiring
from farming in 1990, Robert leased
out his farmland and had time to
make a few short trips with Helen
before her sudden passing in 1997.
In 1999, Robert
married Betty (Voldahl) Langpap in
Rake. They spent summers on the farm
and the remainder of the year in
Huntington Beach, CA, where Betty
has a home. There he became
acquainted with many new friends and
neighbors. Robert attended St. Olaf
Lutheran Church. He took up golfing
with Betty and friends and enjoyed
weekly lunches with a group of men
whom he befriended. Robert and Betty
took many wonderful trips together
to Hawaii, Alaska. Europe, Mexico,
and Washington State, as well as
many short local excursions. He
loved trips to the casinos and
enjoyed his knack for having good
luck.
Robert truly
appreciated the fact that he and Betty
enjoyed robust health in their later
years oflife. He was proud of his
exercise regimen and always ready to go
for a walk. Together, they led an active
social life. In recent weeks, after
learning of his terminal illness, he
responded to his physician, "We all have
to go sometime", typical of his calm
nature. He was surrounded by his wife
Betty, his brother Donald, his daughter
Becky, and his son Bradley, at the time
of his passing in Costa Mesa, CA, on
March 31, 2013.

teacher.

started farming with his father, and on
his own after Warner retired. When Dan
finished college they farmed together
until his own retirement in 1991.
Orville loved to drive the tractor and
combine for Dan and then his grandsons
until 2004 when he was no longer
physically able. He then looked forward
to spring and fall and talking Norma
into driving him out to the farm to
observe the operations and occasionally
offering a word of advice.
Orville and Norma lived on the home
place by Ledyard until 2008, when they
moved to Van Buren Terrace Apartments in
Algona. He entered Good Samaritan

the farm he called home for so many
years. He lived on the Knudtson home
place for 72 years before he and Delores

and playing ping pong. He often talked
about the “good ol days” working the
horse drawn, two bottom plow, to most
recently driving a tractor “hands free”
allowing him to multi-task (LOL). He
enjoyed the tractor rides every year
with his nephews and friends, ice
fishing, playing cards, golfing at Rice
Lake and dancing.

Winnebago Lutheran Church serving in
numerous capacities from the cemetery
board, was a Trustee, to Brotherhood and
