RITA RASMUSSEN
August 21, 1925 - June 16, 2013

Rita Rasmussen, 87, of Forest City, died Sunday, June 16, 2013 at the Twin Oaks Health & Rehabilitation home in Lansing, KS.
 
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, June 20, 2013 at St. James Catholic Church in Forest City, with Fr. Dennis Miller officiating.
 
Burial will be in St. James Catholic Cemetery in Forest City.
 
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m, Wednesday, June 19, 2013 at Petersen Lund Funeral Home - 505 N. Clark St., Forest City and continue one hour prior to services at the church.  A Rosary Service will be held at 6:45 p.m.
 
Rita Irene Rasmussen, the daughter of Victor and Viola (Doughan) Loebig, was born August 21, 1925 in Wesley, Iowa.  She was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wesley, Iowa, where she also attended grade school.  Following high school in Britt, Iowa, Rita taught at a rural school in Hancock County for two years.  She fell in love with Kenneth Rasmussen and the two were married at St. Joseph's on November 9, 1944. 
 
Rita and Ken farmed for 6 years near Wesley, Iowa, before moving to a farm near Leland, Iowa, in 1950.  In 1967, Rita joined the United States Postal Service in Leland where she served as clerk and then postmaster for 20 years until her retirement in 1987.  Following retirement, Rita and Ken moved to Forest City and enjoyed spending winter months in Arizona.  
 
She spent the last five years of her life in Kansas living near her daughter, Mary Forslund.  She was a charter member of the residents at Santa Marta Health Plaza in Olathe, Kansas. She was also a charter member of the residents of Twin Oaks Health and Rehab Center in Lansing, Kansas.
 
Rita thoroughly loved her family and many friends - many of whom she socialized with at her beloved St. James Catholic Church in Forest City.  She was a member of the St James Ladies Guild, and  St James Choir member.  She served on the first Confraternity of Christian Doctrine Board, St James Advisory Board, St James Board of Education and taught CCD classes for many years.  She also catalogued St James's Library which won national honors.  Most will remember Rita, however, by her daily presence in the church at her favorite pew in back.  From there she would meet and greet fellow church goers with her beautiful smile and cheery outlook. 
 
Rita is survived by her children; Mary (John) Forslund of Leavenworth, Kansas, and Tom (Bonnie) Rasmussen of Lake Elmo, Minnesota.   She also had five grandchildren, Martha (Randy) Linscott  of Kansas City, Kansas: Michelle (Tim) Carter of Hawthorn Woods, Illinois; Mary (Paul) Rasmussen Ahlers of Woodbury, Minnesota; Lori (Hannes) Egbers also of Woodbury, Minnesota; and Karin Rasmussen of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Rita was blessed with 8 great grandchildren: Hayden, Emma, and Maeve Linscott; Kara and Keith Carter; Leah and Rachel Ahlers; and Isla Egbers.
 
Rita is survived by three sisters; Sister Mary Jo Loebig, Ellen (Ed) McManus, and Kay (Larry) Cook.
 
She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Rasmussen (March 18, 1996); son, Randy (August 1, 1966); infant daughter, Gerardia (October 17, 1958); her parents, Victor and Viola Loebig; and three brothers, Merle, John, and Elry (Al) Loebig.

DAVID HENRY PINK
December 17, 1924 - May 16, 2013

David Henry Pink, The Dalles, Ore., died peacefully at his family home May 16, 2013.

He was born Dec. 17, 1924 in Buffalo Center, Iowa, son of John and Essie Pink. He grew up on the family farm, graduated from Buffalo Center public school, and entered the United States Army in 1941, serving in the Pacific theater in World War II, stationed in the Philippines. He was honorably discharged in 1946 and returned to Iowa to study pharmacy at Iowa State and the University of Iowa.

He met Barbara Creighton of The Dalles while visiting his sister in 1950. They were married Aug. 24, 1951, in The Dalles and were together until his passing.

After a brief time in Iowa, they purchased property on Orchard Road in The Dalles in 1954, where David devoted the rest of his life to work and family.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Pink, The Dalles; son, Casey (Jody) Pink, The Dalles; daughter, Joan (Abdolreaza) Chaichi, Beaverton, Ore.; daughter, Dorothy (Al) Doyle, Bainbridge Island, Wash.; grandchildren, Joshua (Ammy) Pink, The Dalles; Jenny Pink, Portland, Ore.; Farrah Chaichi, Beaverton; Ryan Chaichi, Beaverton; Dustin Heins, Bellingham, Wash.; Brenton Heins, The Dalles; great-grandchildren, Skylar Conklin and Gabe Pink, The Dalles; sister, Helen Pink, Odgaard, Algona, Iowa; niece, Dorothy Meehan, Algona; nephew, David (Sharon) Bonn, St. Helens, Ore.; nephew, John Waterman, Seattle, Wash. He was preceded in death by his mother, father and sisters Dorothy Pink Zager, Burlington, Iowa, and Vivian Pink (Ted) Betels, Cherokee, Iowa; and brother-in-law Art Odgaard, Algona, Iowa.

Services celebrating his life will be Thursday, May 23, 1 p.m., at Life in Christ Center, 3095 Cherry Heights Rd, The Dalles. Dr. J. W. Jepson, senior pastor, will officiate. Memorials may be made to Meals-on-Wheels, 1112 W 9th St, The Dalles, OR 97058.

BERNARD "Mike" SMITH
September 28, 1945 - May 30, 2013

Bernard Bernard “Mike” Smith of Buffalo Center passed away Thursday May 30, 2013 at his home.

There will be a private family funeral service. A public visitation will be Sunday June 2 from 3-5 PM at Winter Funeral Home in Buffalo Center. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery.

Bernard Michael Smith was born September 28, 1945 to Bernard C. and Elizabeth (Stremfel) Smith in Kellogg, IA.

He graduated from Buffalo Center High School in 1963 and then went on to further his education at North Iowa Area Community College, Iowa State University and Mankato State University.

On April 18, 1969 he married Deborah Quame, to this union they were blessed with two children, Jason and Nikki.

Mike was a long time farmer in the Buffalo Center area and also worked at Elmore Industries and Cummins Manufacturing.

He enjoyed working outside and took pride in his yard and garden. Later he enjoyed spending time with his grandsons, taking them for tractor rides and to get ice cream.

He is survived by his loving wife Deb, his son; Jason (Angie) of Coralville, IA and their children Austin and Justin. His daughter Nikki (Steve) Knowlton of Charles City, IA and their children Renee, Abbey and Cari. Brother; Tom (Sallie) of Buffalo Center, IA. Sisters; Ann (Jack) Coady of Solon, IA, Barb (Alan) Agena of Ankeny, IA and Mary Smith of Ames, IA, his mother-in-law Norma (Jim) Bosma as well as several nieces and nephews.

Mike is preceded in death by his parents, Bernard and Elizabeth. Father-in-law Orlando Quame and brother-in-laws Greg and Bradley Quame


SHERYL J (Aukes) WILBUR
January 22, 1950 - June 18, 2013
Sheryl (Aukes) Wilbur, age 63 passed away Tuesday June 18 at the Central Health Care Center in LeCenter, MN.

A celebration of her life will be held 2 PM Saturday June 29 at the First Congregational Church in Buffalo Center, IA with Pastor Brad DeVries officiating. Refreshments will be served after the service with time for visitation and sharing stories.

Sheryl was born January 22, 1950 in Buffalo Center, IA to Raymond and Betty (Hauskins) Aukes. Sheryl was baptized at the First Congregational Church in Buffalo Center. She attended Sunday school and Youth Group and accepted Christ as her savior as a teen during a youth meeting.

Sheryl graduated from Buffalo Center High School in 1968 and then attended Spencer School of Business. She moved to Wichita, KS and lived there for almost 30 years raising her three children and spoiling her grandchildren. She worked for several years at the bakery, Sugar N Spice Donuts.

Sheryl loved to cook and her family and friends raved about her homemade dishes. She also enjoyed camping and going to the lake. Sheryl moved back to Iowa in 1998 and last resided at Central Health Care in LeCenter, MN where she enjoyed day adventures and the friendship of many of the staff and residents.

Left to cherish her memory are her children; Pamela (Aukes) Flores of Wichita, KS, Jerry Aukes of Wichita, KS and Eric Aukes of Wichita, KS. Her father Ray Aukes of Buffalo Center, IA, siblings; Gary (Orva) Aukes of Payson, AZ, Doug (Deb) Aukes of Buffalo Center, IA, LuAnn (Kevin) Johnson of Coon Rapids, MN, Ron Aukes (devoted friend Kim) of Buffalo Center, IA, two grandsons, two granddaughters and five great grandchildren.

Sheryl is preceded in death by her mother Betty and her sister Lori Giesking.


ALROY V KRULL
July 12, 1936 - June 19, 2013

Alroy V. Krull, 76, of Buffalo Center, Iowa, passed away peacefully Wednesday, June 19, 2013, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 25, at First Reformed Church in Buffalo Center with Pastor Bill Peake officiating.

A visitation will be held at First Reformed Church from 5 until 7 p.m. today, Monday, June 24.

Alroy, the son of Fred and Adeline (Gerzema) Krull, was born July 12, 1936, at the Dolmage Hospital in Buffalo Center. He attended Grant No. 5 grade school and graduated from Buffalo Center High School in 1953. He also graduated from the Reisch School of Auctioneering in 1953.

He was a lifelong member of the First Reformed Church in Buffalo Center, where he served as an elder, deacon, Sunday school teacher, choir member and wherever he was needed.

Alroy married Marlene Lovik on Oct. 1, 1955, at the Winnebago Lutheran Church, rural Lake Mills. They were blessed with four children: Sheryl, Patricia, Mark and Jamie.

He worked for the Winnebago County SCS Office in Thompson and the District SCS Office in Mason City. He was an inspector for Northern Border Pipeline in several states and a surveyor for several farm drainage firms. He was employed in the maintenance department of Timely Mission Nursing Home for a few years. He also farmed several years on the farm of his grandfather, John Gerzema. He was an auctioneer at the DeVries Auction Co. for 44 years. He served on the Buffalo Center City Council for several years.

In 1983, he and his wife opened Mr. K’s Kafe & Katering, which they operated until 1998. Alroy, Marlene and their staff of loyal employees catered many weddings, funerals and other small and large functions, the largest being an event for 2,500 people.

He enjoyed spending time with his family, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His ready smile and blue eyes will be missed by all who knew and loved him. He was a kind and caring man who is now at peace with our Heavenly Father.

Alroy is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marlene; and by his four children: Sheryl Blomster and her husband, John, Buffalo Center; Patricia Lauritsen, Plymouth, Iowa; Mark Krull and his wife, Shelda, Buffalo Center; Jamie Krull and his wife, Dr. Teresa Gray, Maple Grove, Minn.

He is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren: Brett and Dr. Rachel Venteicher, Lainey, Gabby, Caleb and Jenna of Algona; Scott and Gina Venteicher, Gwendalyn, Simon and Roscoe of Des Moines; Mara Venteicher and fiancé Michael Walstead of Swea City; Spencer Lauritsen of Leland; Autumn Lauritsen of Clear Lake; Katy Lauritsen, Dakota and Jude of Mason City; Wendy and Orlando Guzman, Alyssa and Aiden of Midway, Ga.; Dan and Julie Krull of Indianola; Eric Krull of Buffalo Center; Savannah, Sierra and Scarlett Krull of Maple Grove, Minn.; Chris Blomster of Rochester, Minn.; and Jenny Blomster of LeSuer, Minn. He is also survived by his four sisters: Joyce (Loren) Shiers, Ardella Krull, Betty Baker and LeEtta Krull, all of Ames.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Adeline (Gerzema) Krull; his father-in-law and mother-in law, Thomas and Hazel (Brue) Lovik; and four brothers-in-law: Alan Baker, Verne, Eldon and Harlan Lovik.

As per his wishes, his body was donated to the Mayo Clinic for educational purposes.
