ELSIE A. KOPPEN
September 23, 1928 - January 27, 2013
 

Elsie A. Koppen, 84, passed away on Sunday, January 27. A funeral service was held Friday, February 1 at S1. Paul Lutheran Church in Lakota, with Rev. Dr. Elaine Siemsen officiating. Burial was in S1. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, Lakota.

Elsie Alyce Stroebel, daughter of Carl "Charlie" and Cora "Alta" (Nutt) Stroebel, was born on a farm near Swea City, on September 23, 1928. She was baptized at her Grandmother Stroebel's house in Lakota on October 7, 1928, and confirmed in the Good Hope Lutheran Church in Titonka on May 31st, 1942.

At the age of 2 years, she moved with her family to a farm near Titonka, where she grew up, and was educated in country school's until entering High School at Titonka, graduating in 1945. She attended Waldorf College graduating in 1947. She taught school in Ledyard and Buffalo Center and substitute taught for many years at Lakota, Ledyard, and Buffalo Center.

On June 1, 1952, she was married to Paul Koppen at the St. Paul Lutheran Church where she became a member of on November 11, 1951. She taught Sunday school, Bible school, and was a member of ALCW. They lived on a farm near Ledyard for nine years where they began raising their two sons, Michael and Kelvin. They then moved east of Lakota in 1961 until 1969, when they moved to their present farm.

Paul and Elsie farmed side by side for many years and Elsie was very good operating the machinery especially the combine. She took much pride in caring for and working the farm. You rarely saw Elsie and Paul not together. In 1973, the family opened their snowmobile repair shop which is still operated today by their son, Kelvin. Elsie enjoyed dancing, playing cards, gardening, and doing crafts.

Elsie was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in September, 2010 and became a resident of Lakeview United Nursing Home, Fairmont, MN, in January, 2011. She made many great friends while being a resident there and she received exceptional medical care. Elsie died on Sunday, January 27, 2013 at the age of 84.

She is survived by her husband, Paul Koppen of Lakota; her sons, Michael Koppen and his wife Sheila, Kelvin Koppen and his wife Tamie of Lakota; her grandchildren which she was very proud of, Kelsie Koppen and her son Kade of Lakota, and Brady Koppen of Lakota. She is also survived by her sisters, Mildred Spear of Algona, and Darlene (Maurice) Blome of Ferryville, WI; brother-in-law Robert Anderson of Buffalo Center and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Verdene Anderson and brother-in-law James Spear.

 

SCOTT B. BOSMA
December 15, 1954 - February 1, 2013

Scott went to be with his Lord and Heavenly Father, Friday evening, February 1, 2013, Skiff Medical Center in Newton, under the care of Skiff Hospice.
 
Funeral Services for Scott, will be 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, February 5, 2013, at Cornerstone Bible Fellowship Church, Pastor Bryan Keeton officiating. Friends may call at the church with the family, after 3:30, Tuesday until service time. Pence - Reese Funeral Home in Newton, has been entrusted with the arrangements. Burial will be at Maple Hill Cemetery in Lakota, IA, 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 6. In lieu of flowers, memorials are being designated in Scott's name to Skiff Hospice, Dollar for Scholars and Cornerstone Bible Fellowship Church.

Scott B. Bosma, 58, the son of Jenifer Harold and Mary Ann (Tvedten) Bosma, was born December 15, 1954, in Blue Earth, MN. He was a graduate of the Lakota High School, Class of 1973. He would graduate from Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, and later received his Masters from Viterbo University in La Crosse, WI. Scott taught school at Colfax-Mingo Middle Schools, 7th & 8th Grades Language Arts Class and Newton Middle Schools, 7th Grade Reading. He was also the head Basketball Coach at Newton Senior High, 2000-2005.

On July 30, 1977, Scott was united in marriage with Nancy Lynn Nebergall in Lakota. He devoted his life to his family, and was a devoted member of the Cornerstone Bible Fellowship Church. He enjoyed family and friends, and gardening, landscaping and interior designing.

Those left to honor Scott's memory include his daughter & son-in-law: Dr. Jamie & Dr. John "Jack" Groh of Palm Beach Gardens, FL; his son Bradley Bosma of Chicago, IL; his parents: Jenifer & Mary Ann Bosma of Blue Earth, MN; his brother Brian (Marcela) Bosma of Brooklyn Park, MN; his sister Lorrie Bosma of Blue Earth; his father-in-law and mother-in-law: Donald & Shirley Nebergall of Cedar Rapids; brother-in-law: Dr. Robert Nebergall of Tulsa, OK; his niece and nephews; and his many friends.

Scott was preceded in death by his wife Nancy on Dec. 14, 2009; and his Maternal and Paternal grandparents.


PATRICK J. MCCOLLOCH
February 1, 1945  -  January 29, 2013
 

Patrick J. McColloch, age 67 of Harlan, Iowa passed away January 29, 2013. He was born February 1, 1945 in Belmond, Iowa to Chester and Lois (Murtagh) McColloch.

He proudly served his country in the United States Navy and then retired from the Union Pacific Rail Road.

Patrick is preceded in death by his father, Chester and son, Michael Gardner.

Patrick is survived by his wife, Sunny; son and daughter-in-law, Patrick and Sara McColloch; daughter, Cheryl Letcher; mother, Lois McColloch; sister, Geraldine Helfter (Bill); brothers, Dan McColloch, Scott McColloch (Sue); grandchildren, Ryan, Makayla, Kasi, Gracie, Sami and Jessi; a host of other family and friends.

Visitation is Saturday 12-1PM with a service to begin at 1PM at the Hoy-Kilnoski Funeral Home followed by a reception in the community room at Hoy-Kilnoski.

The family will direct memorials to a cause important to Patrick.


ALLAN GILBERTSON
June 29, 1937 - January 29, 2013 

Allan Gilbertson, 75, of Forest City died Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, February 1 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City, with Pastor Rod Hopp officiating.

Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery in Forest City.

Visitation will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 PM, Thursday, January 31, 2013 at Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark Street, Forest City and continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Allan was born June 29, 1937 to Leonard and Olive (Tweeten) Gilbertson. He graduated from Forest City High School in 1955, Waldorf College in 1957 and Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls.

He married Donna (Heitland) Gilbertson November 26, 1958, and to this union three children were born, Mark, Dennis and Mary.

Al had an extraordinary career teaching high school advanced math, where he was a favorite teacher to many. He coached almost every girls' and boys' sport at one time or another. He taught in Wellsburg and Rolfe before returning home to Forest City in 1972. Al's greatest passion was girls' track and field. In Rolfe he coached two state championship teams in 1967 and 1968, when all schools were in one class. At Forest City he coached several state champion events, and his teams won many conference championships. He was inducted into the Rolfe Athletic Hall of Fame and the Forest City Education Hall of Fame. He recently received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Forest City High School.

Al was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and a former member of the Forest City Lions' Club. He spent many summers doing exterior painting in the area. He painted with other teachers and also had a paint crew with his kids. He also enjoyed treasure hunting. You could see him all over town with his metal detector looking for coins and treasures.

Al and Donna spent fourteen winters at Fiesta Village in Mission Texas. They have many dear friends from Forest City and Fiesta Village.

Al was a devoted husband, a loving and caring father, and a proud and generous grandfather. He and Donna loved supporting their grandkids at their athletic and fine arts events.

He is survived by his wife, Donna, of 53 years; children Mark (Rita), Denny (Beth) all of Forest City, Mary (Scott) Meyer of Dougherty; grandchildren Robby, Reid, Holly and Bailey Gilbertson, Justin and Morgan Meyer, and step-granddaughter Alison Hagarty; a brother James (Karen) of Prairie Village, KS; sister-in-laws and brother-in-laws, Shirley (Jerry) Higbee, Butch (Jean) Heitland, and (Gescha) Heitland, all of Lake Mills; many nieces and nephews, extended relatives, friends and former students.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Olive Gilbertson, in laws Edward and Marion Heitland, brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws, Jim (Marilyn) Heitland, and Dave (Mae and Betty) Heitland.

Tracy Earl Kluver
October 30, 1962 - February 7, 2013 

Tracy E. Kluver, 50, of Eldridge, Iowa, formerly of Crystal Lake died Thursday, February 7, 2013 at his home.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M., Tuesday, February 12th at the Crystal Lake United Methodist Church with Rev. Jerald Swanberg officiating. Burial will be in Crystal Township Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 P.M., Monday at the Cataldo Funeral Home in Britt and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Tracy Earl Kluver, the son of Merle and Karen (Brown) Kluver, was born October 30, 1962 at Britt. He graduated from Woden-Crystal Lake High School in 1981 and the University of North Iowa in Cedar Falls in 1986 with a bachelor's degree in business. Tracy worked for a few years in Des Moines at various companies in insurance, collections and at Principal Financial. He then returned to UNI graduating with honors in 1997 with a computer science degree. Tracy lived in Waterloo and was employed at John Deere as an IT data analyst. He received very good performance reviews in mentoring others at work. In 2003, he moved to Eldridge near the Quad Cities and continued working at John Deere at the World Headquarters as a project manager in the Information Knowledge Center. Tracy turned 50 last October and had a big surprise party in Eldgridge for him. He had a dry sense of humor and quiet mannerism about him. Tracy was very knowledgeable and loved to talk. He always had a position on any topic of conversation. He loved sports, especially watching NFL football games and UNI Panther teams. He enjoyed playing golf, trips to Paris and Vegas and spending time with his nieces, nephews, and his girlfriend Anna and family. Tracy loved anything that was John Deere and was very proud to be a part of the John Deere team.

He was a member of the Crystal Lake United Methodist Church, lifetime member of the UNI Alumni Association, John Deere Golf League member and a condo board member.

Tracy is survived by his mother, Karen Kerr of Waterloo; his long-time girlfriend, Anna Gingery of Davenport; a brother, Bruce (Marcia) Kluver of Crystal Lake; a sister, Toni (Carl) Eckenrod of Mason City; a sister-in-law, Victoria Kluver of St. Louis, MO; nieces and nephews, Brett (Heather) Kluver and their daughter, Aubrey, Amber Kluver (fiancé, Brandon Heimer), Logan and Carson Williams and Ashley, Amber and Jason Kluver; step nieces and nephew, Alexandria, Carlie and Austin Eckenrod; two aunts, Eleanor Kluver of Crystal Lake and Glenys (Dale) Bird of Florida; two uncles, Morris Kluver of Forest City and Buster (Marlene) Brown of Clarion; and many other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his father, Merle; and brother, Kevin.


MILDRED T. HANSON
December 24, 1922 - February 14, 2013

Mildred Hanson, 90, of Forest City, died Thursday, February 14, 2013 at Good Samaritan Care Center in Forest City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Monday, February 18, 2013 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City, with Pastor Rod Hopp officiating.

Burial will be in Madison Township Cemetery in Forest City.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 PM, Sunday, February 17, 2013 at Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark Street, Forest City and continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Mildred Thelma Hanson was born December 24, 1922, to Jens and Mattie (Twito) Charlson, on a farm in Hancock County, south of Forest City. She attended Forest City elementary schools and graduated from Forest City High School in 1941. Mildred married Duane Herbert Hanson on July 8, 1942. After her marriage Mildred worked at Saar Produce. In 1957 the couple moved in with her father, following her mother's death. For several years, Mildred worked for "Look Magazine" in their Des Moines office, driving back and forth. When Duane was seriously injured at work, the family moved to Chicago during his recovery. Upon returning to Forest City, Mildred began working for GTE in 1967 in the Forest City office. She retired from the Emmetsburg GTE office in 1985.

Mildred was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. She enjoyed camping and motorhome travel and time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved to travel to visit family in California, Florida, Canada and on the East Coast.

Mildred is survived by three grandchildren, Elke Hanson and her partner, Earnest Filby and their son, John of Chardon, OH., Dane (Heidi) Hanson and their children, Luke, Dru, Jacob and Leigh of Williamsburg, VA., Case Hanson of Chardon, OH., and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Duane; son, Lowell; six brothers, Chester, Milton, Melvin, Wilfred, Harold and Reuben Charlson; and three sisters, Ella Guthrie, Margaret Charlson and Rachel Bird.


MILTON ALFRED BOMAN
February 8, 1918 - February 18, 2013

Milton A. Boman went to rest with his Heavenly Father on Monday, February 18, 2013 at the Cedars Assisted Living Home in Madrid, Iowa.

A private family service was held.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Central Iowa or the Cedars Assisted Living Home in Madrid.

Milton Alfred Boman, the son of Alfred and Ellen (Benson) Boman was born February 8, 1918 in the family farm home in Forest City, Iowa. He attended Forest City High School. After graduation, he entered the Coast Guard in 1942 and served 4 years on both coasts training guard dogs. Milton was one of the last surviving World World II Veterans. He returned home and married Helen Arlene Nelson in 1948 at the First Baptist Church in Forest City. Milton and Helen raised three children on the family homestead where he farmed well into his 80s. They celebrated 63 years together before Helen's passing in March of 2012. Besides farming, he was a Trustee for Hancock County for 45 years. He was a Director of Hancock Mutual Insurance Association and also director for Capital Security Life Insurance Company for many years. After retiring, he and Helen moved to Garner, Iowa. He was a member of First Baptist Church. His hobbies included art, music, and cars, and he had a love for animals and nature. He will be remembered for his kind heart and handsome smile.

He is survived by three children, Cynthia (Bob) Cramer of Boone, Wesley (Cherie) Boman of Klemme and Trudy (Tom) Burford of Johnston; grandchildren, Reynolds, John (Gina), and Erika Cramer, Sally (Michael) Lynick, Katie and Betsy Boman, Thomas Ryan (Tiffany) and Anna Burford; and eight great grandchildren.


JAMES G. SCHOOLCRAFT
January 5, 1939 - February 22, 2013

James G. Schoolcraft, 74, of Hudson, died on Friday, February 22, 2013, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home.

He was born on January 5, 1939, in Renwick, Iowa, son of George and Grace Lamfers Schoolcraft. James attended Forest City Elementary and Community High School. Later, he attended Hawkeye Institute of Technology and Iowa State University for Welding Courses. He graduated from Tulsa welding school with honors receiving a diploma in welding and graduated with honors from Port Huemene Naval School in California.

James married Dorothy Kalvig on September 14, 1958, at the First Lutheran Church, Northwood, Iowa. He served in the Armed Forces for 38 years, receiving an honorable discharge in 1999.

James was on call for five conflicts and was awarded “Sailor of the Year” in 1997. He earned seven Meritorious Medal Awards, two Armed Forces Medals/Ribbons, the Helm Award and 16 Medal/Ribbon Awards. He was honored by Marine, Navy, Seabee, Air Force and National Guard units in which he served.
Throughout his life, James served in some way. He was a member of the American Welding Assoc. and held an elected Directorship Office, Davenport, Iowa, for several terms. He owned and operated Jim’s Portable Welding and Fabrication for over 46 years, working in 96 of 99 counties in Iowa. He carried four certifications in his specialized field. Washington D.C. , Home Security and the Des Moines, Iowa, State Dept. utilized him for consultations. He semi-retired in 2004 and went to work three days a week for KW Electric in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

He was a member of Hudson AmVet Post 82 American Legion Post 559. He was a life member of the NERA, served as a church deacon, usher and council member and belonged to several antique Tractor clubs. The joy of his life was attending Antique Power Shows ,which he competed in with his Oliver 1600/ 1962 and his 1948 Allis Chalmers.

James is survived by his wife, Dorothy;three daughters, Abbie J. Schoolcraft of Anamosa, Garnet-Rae S. (Brian) Wright of St. Paul, Minn, and Jessie Schoolcraft of Hudson; two Brothers, Fred Schoolcraft of Dungan, Iowa, and Ben (Martha) Lamfers of Jenison, Michigan; and four sisters: AnnaMae Pannhoff, Lucille Nelson Kalvig, Opal Schoolcraft and Bernice (Vern) Kauffman, all of Mason City, Iowa.

He is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Arthur Schoolcraft.

Funeral Services are at 11 a.m. today, (Wednesday, February 27, 2013) at the rural Zion Lutheran Church, Hudson.

Burial will be in Hudson Cemetery, Hudson, Iowa, with Military Rites by the Hudson AmVet Post #82 and the Iowa National Guard.

Visitation will be from 9-11 a.m. Wednesday before the services at the church.


DONNA J. HANKE 
September 12, 1923 - February 19, 2013

Donna Hanke, age 89, of Mankato died Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at Mayo Clinic Health Systems in Mankato.

A Graveside Service will be held at a later date in Brownsville, Minnesota. Mankato Mortuary is assisting the family with arrangements.

Donna was born September 12, 1923 to Nels and Mabelle (Bates) Gutteboe in Madison, South Dakota. Following her high school graduation she attended Luther College in Decorah, Iowa where she received her Bachelor's Degree.

On June 14, 1947 she was united in marriage to Dale Hanke in Capron, Illinois. Donna and Dale shared 63 years of marriage together before his death on September 13, 2010.

Donna was a homemaker and a teacher in Frost, Minnesota. She also worked as the librarian at Mankato West High School and taught piano lessons in Janesville, Minnesota and Mankato. Donna was a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church as well as P.E.O. International, Women's Club, Retired Teachers Association of Minnesota (REAM), Kiwanis International, and the International Student Organization at MSU. She enjoyed playing bridge, working on crafts, and reading. Donna and Dale enjoyed traveling, visiting all 50 states and other countries. She also cherished her collection of angels, which she collected from her travels.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughters: Donnelle (Joe) Casler of Columbia, MO, and Deanne (Mark) Saari of Rush City, MN; daughter-in-law, Sandra Block of Minneapolis, MN; eight grandchildren: David (Kelly) Casler of Warrensburg, MO, Douglas (Alison) Casler of Cottleville, MO, Deborah (Jason) Stanoch of Bemidji, MN, Jon (Chris Wick) Hanke, Chandra Hanke, and Anneke (Tapio) Haku all of Minneapolis, MN, Asha (Gabriel) Hertler of Fargo, ND, and Matthew (special friend, Jennifer Schuller) Saari of Huntsville, AL; great-grandchildren: Connor and Claire Casler, Zachary Casler, Emma and Jacob Stanoch, Jasper Hanke, and Aila, Jackson and Sabrina Haku; sister-in-law, Lois Goetzinger; nephew Mark (Bonnie) Goetzinger and family, all of Caledonia, MN; and other extended family.

Donna was very involved with the International Student Organzation at Minnesota State University and is also survived by her international family: Tom and Lan Li and grandson, Jimmy of St. Michael, MN; and Yoshie and Hiro Kobayashi of Kagoshima, Japan.

Donna was preceded in death by her husband; son, Dale (Lee) Hanke Jr.; parents; parents-in-law, Roy and Freda Hanke; brother, William Gutteboe; brother-in-law, Ervin (Casey) Goetzinger; sister-in-law, June Hanke; two nephews and one niece.

Memorials may be directed to the International Student Endowment Fund at Minnesota State University, Mankato or to the donor's choice.


VICTOR J. BENSON
October 4, 1921 - February 21, 2013

Victor Benson, 91, of Forest City, died Thursday, February 21, 2013 at Good Samaritan Care Center in Forest City.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 PM, Sunday, February 24, 2013 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City with Pastor Rod Hopp officiating.

Inurnment will be held in the spring.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church.

Victor James Benson was born October 4, 1921, on a farm near Britt, Iowa, to Torsten "Tom" and Hannah (Vorland) Benson.

Victor worked at the Strand Dairy and farmed until his retirement in 2011. Victor married Blanche Charlson on June 20, 1944 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City. They rented several farms before purchasing their farm northeast of Forest City. They resided there until they moved into the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City in 2012.

Victor always liked to sing and play his guitar and harmonica. He and Blanche entertained many groups with their singing over the years. He was a member of the Forest City Barbershop Chorus for many years and a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City. He also served on the Forest City Creamery Board.

Survivors include his wife, Blanche; and their six children and spouses, Janet (Tom) Oakleaf, James (Jane) Benson, Carol (Dan) Edmondson, Dale (Susan) Benson, Linda (Kirk) Whittlesey and Mark Benson. Also surviving are 9 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 4 step grandchildren; 1 step great-grandchild; sisters, Thelma Smith, Dorothy Etzen, Marjorie Anderson; and brother, Robert Benson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Jerimy Benson; sister, Alice Gerdes; brother, Norman Benson and his twin brother, Vance Benson.

In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the Jerimy Benson Scholarship Fund, Forest City Good Samaritan Society or Hospice of North Iowa.


AMANDA KOLLASCH
May 6, 1923 - February 18, 2013 

Amanda Kollasch was born May 6, 1923, in Lakota, the youngest of 8 children of William and Anna (Rippentrop) Ukena. She grew up near Lakota graduating from Lakota High School in 1941. She then worked at Penn Station in Philadelphia, PA as a railroad reservationist prior to her marriage.

Amanda was married to Roland "Pete" Kollasch on July 24, 1943, at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City. They raised their family on a farm south of Bancroft. She enjoyed needle point, gardening, and baking. Amanda stayed active volunteering with the Senior Citizens Center and the St. John's School hot lunch program. She was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, the Altar Society and the Catholic Daughter of the Americas, and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Amanda Kollasch died Monday, February 18, 2013, at the Heritage Nursing Home at the age of 89. She had been a resident there since August, 2011.
She is survived by seven children, Jim (Gen) Kollasch of Mt. Laurel, NJ, Nancy (Jim) Overlie of Orlando, FL, Bev (Don) Fynboh of Buffalo, MN, Roger (Melinda) Kollasch of Prairie Village, KS, Bill (Pat) Kollasch of Olathe, KS, Marilyn (Chuck) Vaske of Bancroft, and Steve Kollasch of Clive; 17 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by three sisters-in-law, Joyce Droessler and Maxine Kollasch of Bancroft, and Mary Alice Hotchkiss of Lakota; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Pete on May 18, 1998; two sisters, Mary Burns and Gertrude Hansen; and five brothers, Jerry, John, George, Melvin, and Calvin Ukena.


Rachel N Retland
May 10, 1917 - February 18, 2013
Rachel Retland, age 95 of Thompson passed away Monday February 18 at Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.

Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Tuesday February 26, 2013 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Thompson with Pastor Elaine Siemsen officiating. Visitation will be 5 –7 PM Monday February 25 at the church and one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Thompson.

Rachel Norma Retland, daughter of Osmund R and Emma Olive (Mattison) Thorland was born May 10, 1917 on the Thorland family farm southwest of Thompson. She was the granddaughter of the Halvor H. Mattisons and great granddaughter of the Hans Mattisons who were of the early settlers of Linden Township.

Baptized in Linden Lutheran Church, confirmed in Bethany Lutheran Church, Thompson, of which she has since been a member.

She attended country school at Linden #2, two years of high school at Thompson, graduating from Forest City High School in 1934 with a Normal Training Certificate. She taught country school several years, was active in her church and circle, and a faithful Sunday School Teacher for several years.

United in marriage to Kenneth Retland April 24, 1938, they made their home on a farm southwest of Thompson until Kenneth's death in 1996. She continued to live there until moving to her home west of Thompson.

Rachel appreciated the goodness of God, family, home and friends. She was especially fond of butterflies, birds, flowers and flower gardens. She and Kenneth planted butterfly gardens to enjoy. She was an avid reader (read every paper, including ads sent to her before destroying any of them). She collected poetry and writings and wrote poetry herself. She had the most beautiful handwriting, which was art in itself. She and Kenneth were helpmates; whether in field or house, with kids or animals. She liked sewing, making quilts, embroidering, and especially patching little and big boys jeans.

Survived by children Francile (Gary) of Thompson, IA; Ruby (Chuck) Curtsinger of McKinney, TX; Bernie (Chris) Waco, TX; Tim of Thompson, 12 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, sisters-in-law Charlotte Oulman of Thompson and Mary Thorland of West Des Moines, IA and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Harold and Verna Retland of Fremont, NE.

Preceded in death by parents, husband Kenneth, all 10 siblings - Harold, Judith, Emmet, Victor, twin brother Randolph, Daniel, David, Paul, Irene & Erling; one great granddaughter Rachael & several nieces and nephews.

Willy Hassebroek
September 1, 1944 - February 22, 2013
U.S. Veteran Willy Hassebroek, age 68 of Buffalo Center passed away Friday February 22, 2013.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, February 26, at 11:00 AM at the First Reformed Church, Buffalo Center with Pastor Bill Peake officiating. Inurnment will be held at a later date at Olena Mound Cemetery, Buffalo Center. Military honors will be presented by the Buffalo Center American Legion/V.F.W. Color Guard.

His visitation will be held on Monday at Winter Funeral Home, Buffalo Center, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM.

Wilbert "Willy" Dean Hassebroek was born in Buffalo Center Iowa to Marvin and Margaret Hassebroek on September 1, 1944. He left the area at age 17 to join the Army after his father's passing. He returned to Buffalo Center after being stationed over seas in 1966. He then joined in marriage to Nancy Anderson on February 24, 1968. To this union there were four children born. Jill who died in infancy, Jeff, Daniel and Jane. Willy and Nancy have lived on their current acerage since 1971 where they raised thier family. In his earlier years he worked at Winnebago Industries and took an adventure and worked for Boeing in Seattle, Washington, but quickly returned back home. There were many business ventures that Willy embarked on. This included, J&J Livestock, Hassebroek Trucking, and family farming.

He had many other involvements in the community which included starting the Buffalo Center Development Corp. and Bison Limited to bring new business to town. He was a member of the American Legion in Buffalo Center and took pride in his country and loved his flag. He was also an avid bowler, snowmobiling, trap shooter and card player in his earlier days.

Later he became a grandpa and enjoyed spoiling his grandchildren through toys, trips and shopping trips to Weaver's. He also enjoyed spending much of his spare time with his fellow coffee drinkers solving "the world's problems" at the "round table." He enjoyed many trips with his wife and visiting long time friends all around the states.

Willy was proceeded in death by his parents, Marvin and Margaret, his daughter, Jill Marie, brother Bob Hassebroek. Survived by wife, Nancy Hassebroek, sons, Jeff Hassebroek of Dike, Daniel Hassebroek (special friend Trisha Jobe) of Buffalo Center, daughter, Jane Nelson (Nathan) of Forest City. Grandchildren, Emily, Drew, Adam and Carter Hassebroek of Dike. Katie, Justin and Kevin Hassebroek of Thompson. Lilian and Alexis Nelson of Forest City. Siblings, Marlyn (Ruth) Hassebroek, Shirley (Mark) Eisenbarth, and Dennis (Nola) Hassebroek, Elaine (Roger) Wilcox.
