Lillian E. Owen, 90

February 6, 2008

Lillian E. Owen, age 90, of Forest City, passed away on Friday, February 1, 2008, at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Forest City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, February 7, at the Emanuel-St. John Lutheran Church in Lytton, with Pastor Wayne Pfannkuch officiating. Burial will be in the Emanuel Lutheran Cemetery, under the direction of the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home. Visitation is from 5-7:00 p.m., on Wednesday, at the funeral home in Sac City.

Lillian Emma Leege, was born in Lytton on May 15, 1917, the daughter of John and Emma (Glassnapp) Leege. She was baptized at the Emanuel Lutheran Church on June 10, 1917, and confirmed at the Emanuel-St. John Lutheran Church in Lytton on March 29, 1931, where she remained a member. Lillian attended the Coon Valley #1 Country School and graduated from the Lytton High School in 1934. Following graduation she attended nurses school in Sioux City.

On April 9, 1939, (Easter Sunday) Lillian was united in marriage to Orville Arthur Owen. Orville and Lillian purchased the John Leege farm south of Lytton where they lived and continued farming until 1989, when they retired and moved to an acreage near Fertile, to be closer to their family.

Lillian enjoyed the farm life, working in her large garden and sharing the abundance with family and friends. She also loved to cook and bake and entertain family at the farm. She won a prize for her recipe in the Pillsbury Bake Off. Using her cooking talents, Lillian owned the Coffee Stop Café in Rockwell City from 1955-1965. Prior to that, she had worked at the Lytton Hatchery.

Lillian was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend who loved and cherished her family. She enjoyed singing in the church choir and was a circle member.

Survivors include her children, Michael (Ramona) Owen of Everly, Iowa, Anieta Oltmann of Plano, Texas and Ronald (Linda) Owen of Forest City; eight grandchildren, Calvin Owen, Michael T. Owen, Kimberly (Dwain) Huckabee, Anne (Mark) Rockwell, Janelle (Jason) Wagner, Brandon Oltmann, Gregory Owen and Shannon Owen; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Carrie Owen of Rockwell City, Iowa and Olive Clouss of Meridian, Idaho; and many nieces and nephews and extended family members.

Lillian was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Orville on March 19, 2001; brothers, Walter, Arthur and Herman Leege; and sister, Elnora Nehman.

Norris O. Gjerstad, 62

February 6, 2008

Norris O. Gjerstad, age 62, of St. Bonifacius, Minnesota, passed away on Friday, February 1, 2008, at the Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia.

Funeral services were held on Monday, February 4, 2008, at the Johnson Funeral Home in Waconia, Minnesota, with Rev. Dick Mark officiating. Further services were held on Tuesday, February 5, at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Buffalo Center, with Rev. Perry Aalgaard officiating. Casket bearers were Rich Gjerstad, Dale Gjerstad, Doug Gjerstad, Tim Gjerstad, Alan Huitt, Mark Heenan. Interment was in the Olena Mound Cemetery, Buffalo Center.

Norris was born on July 4, 1945 in Buffalo Center, the son of Clarence and Ann (Deling) Gjerstad.

Norris enjoyed fishing, gardening and antique collecting, especially Power King Tractors. One of his favorite destinations was going to the cabin.

Norris is preceded in death by his father, Clarence Gjerstad; and brother, Darrel Gjerstad.

Norris is survived by his loving family, children and spouses, Richard and Michele Gjerstad of Mound, Dale Gjerstad and fiancée, Cindy Torkelson of St. Bonifacius, Douglas and Karen Gjerstad of Montgomery, Kathleen and Alan Huitt of Buffalo Center; grandchildren, Heather and Luke Brown, Carrie Coursolle and Shane Brethorst, Wayne and Jeri Landheer, Jennifer and Michael Christ, Janelle and Paul Youngers, Brett Torkelson, Adam Torkelson, Jeremy Scheffert, Amy Scheffert, Megan Scheffert, Morgan Gjerstad, Seth Huitt and Willow Huitt; 6 great-grandchildren; mother, Ann Gjerstad of Buffalo Center; sister-in-law, Muriel Gjerstad of Howard Lake; nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Agnes B. Otis, 86

February 12, 2008

Agnes B. Otis, age 86, of Forest City, died on Monday, February 4, 2008, at the Good Samaritan Care Center in Forest City.

A Mass of the Resurrection was held on Saturday, February 9, at the St. James Catholic Church in Forest City, with Father Henry Huber officiating. Burial was in the St. James Catholic Cemetery in Forest City. Visitation was held at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home in Forest City, on Friday, February 8, with a Scripture Service. Visitation continued at the church an hour prior to the services.

Agnes B. Otis, was born on her parent's farm near Buffalo Center, on December 7, 1921, the daughter of Albert and Elizabeth (Meiman) Helin. She attended rural school near her home and graduated from the Buffalo Center High School.

On June 27, 1944, she was united in marriage to James J. Otis. The couple made their home on the farm west of Forest City their entire married lives. Agnes was a member of the St. James Catholic Church and was active in the Guild.

Agnes was a true "farmer's wife", active in all aspects of the farming operation. She loved being outdoors, working alongside her family. She liked to garden and did a lot of canning. She liked to read and play family games and especially enjoyed get-togethers with her extended family.

Agnes is survived by her five children, Larry Otis of Forest City, Jeff Otis of Forest City, Karen (Daryl) Nelson of Algona, Jane (Marty) Harswick of Urbandale, Iowa and Steve Otis of Midvale, Utah; seven grandchildren, Heather Harswick, Chad Harswick, Tamara Harswick, Jason Otis, Larissa Otis, Lisa Nelson and Anthony Otis; and one great-granddaughter, Alexandra Harswick; two sisters, Leona Rafferty and Pat Sheehy, both of Mason City; and many nieces and nephews.

Agnes was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, James who died on November 13, 2007; and eight siblings, Margaret, Marcella, Catherine, Mary, Eunice, Rita, Marion and John.

She will be greatly missed by her family.

The family wishes memorials be directed to the Good Samaritan Center, Forest City or the Hospice of North Iowa, Forest City.

Orva C. Gustafson, 90

February 12, 2008

Orva C. Gustafson, 90, of Lake Mills, died on Friday, February 8, 2008, at the Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Wednesday, February 13, at the Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills, with Pastor David E. Jordon officiating. Visitation was held from 5-7:00 p.m., on Tuesday evening, at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home and again one hour prior to the services at the church. Burial will take place in the Salem Memorial Cemetery in Lake Mills.

Oral T. Kingland, 92

February 12, 2008

Oral T. Kingland, age 92, of Forest City, died on Saturday, February 9, 2008, at the Good Samaritan Care Center in Forest City.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, February 12, at the Winnebago Lutheran Church in rural Lake Mills, with Pastor Bill Peters officiating. Burial was in the Elim Lutheran Cemetery in rural Fertile, with Military Graveside Rites provided by the Leland VFW Post 6161. Visitation was held on Monday, February 11, at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home and an hour prior to the services at the church.

Oral T. Kingland, was born on a farm in rural Forest City, the son of Joseph and (Emma) Hanson Kingland. He received his education in the rural Mt. Valley Schools and at the Waldorf Academy in Forest City.

Oral served in the US Army from June 1941 to June 1945, including 550 combat days with the Red Bull Infantry in the African Theater and Italy. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Forest City and on June 10, 1946, he married Alice Holland. The couple farmed in Mt. Valley Township for many years. Besides farming, Oral was a gifted mechanic and welder who enjoyed tinkering around his shop and always helped neighbors with welding jobs. He enjoyed fishing and family vacations.

He was an active member of the Winnebago Lutheran Church and had served as President of the Congregation and as Sunday School Superintendent. In 1996, Oral "formerly" retired and he and Alice moved into Forest City. Alice passed away in 2004. Since that time, Oral has made his home at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.

Oral is survived by his four children and their spouses, Judy (Jon) Belmore of Bloomington, Minnesota, Joel (Elaine) Kingland of Forest City, Tom (Sheryl) Kingland of Lake Mills and Mark (Brenda) Kingland of Forest City; ten surviving grandchildren include, Timothy Belmore, Jeff Kingland, Christopher Belmore, Benjamin Kingland, Wendy Kingland, Amy Woodward, Laurie Heidebrink, Allison Beyer-Clausen, Lindsay Langfald and Sara Kingland; eleven great-grandchildren; brother, Quinten (Luverna) Kingland of Loveland, Colorado; two sisters, Rachel Holland of Mason City and Emilie (Allan) Conklin of New Brighton, Minnesota; and three sisters-in-law, Hilda Barnes of Salem, Oregon, Geneva Morstad of Forest Lake, Minnesota and Alice Kingland of Forest City.

Oral was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Alice in 2004; sister, Eva; and a brother, Kennes.

Frances Bruns, 94

February 21, 2008

Frances Bruns, 94, of Britt, died on Monday, February 11, 2008, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m., on Saturday, February 16, at the United Methodist Church in Britt, with Rev. Robert Dodge officiating. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery in Britt. The Cataldo Funeral Home in Britt was in charge of the arrangements.

Franciska “Frances” Bruns, the daughter of Jacob and Kathrine (Korte) Kurtzleben, was born on August 22, 1913 near Ackley. She was baptized at the East Presbyterian Church in Ackley. She wasn't quite a year old when she moved with her family to a farm east of Woden. She attended school at Woden and was confirmed at the Presbyterian Church in Woden. On February 25, 1938, she was united in marriage to Bruno Bruns at the Presbyterian parsonage in Woden.

They farmed near Lakota and Ledyard before moving to a farm southeast of Titonka, where they lived for 25 years. In the fall of 1972, they retired from farming and moved into Britt. Frances enjoyed her family, friends and reading books. She especially loved her flowers.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Britt and was a former member of the Ramsey Reformed Church near Titonka.

Frances is survived by her daughter, Karen (Charles) Walter of Eagan, Minnesota; grandson, Christopher Walter of Apple Valley, Minnesota; two sisters, Kathrine Kurtzleben of Titonka and JoAnn Hobbs of Hampton; a sister-in-law, Harriet Kurtzleben of Woden; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bruno on April 26, 2001; her parents; a sister, Johanna Kurtzleben; and two brothers, Harm and Calvin Kurtzleben.

George E. Woelke, 71

February 19, 2008

George E. Woelke, 71, of Colona, Illinois, died on Tuesday, February 12, 2008, in the Trinity Pathway Hospice at Terrace Park, Bettendorf, Iowa.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 16, at the Colona United Methodist Church. Burial was in the Riverside Cemetery, Riceville, Iowa. Visitation was held on Friday, at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline. Memorials may be made to the Green River United Methodist Church, Colona or to the Alternatives for the Older Adult.

George Emmett Woelke, was born on January 28, 1937 in Beatrice, Nebraska, the son of George E. and Evelyn (Hueske) Woelke. He served in the U.S. Army. He married Marilyn Elwood on August 14, 1966 in Nashua, Iowa. George was an aviation inspector and airplane mechanic for the Elliott Flying Service, Moline, for 20 years. He previously worked at airports in Mason City and Garner, and was co-owner of the Forest City Aviation, Forest City.

He was a member of the Green River United Methodist Church and charter President of the Lions Breakfast Club in Forest City. He loved the outdoors and fishing, and enjoyed woodworking and puttering with boats, cars, and engines. He had been involved in aviation for over 50 years.

George is survived by his wife, Marilyn; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ged and Wendy Woelke of Bend, Oregon and Garrin and Jennifer Woelke of Colona; two grandsons, Gavin and Fisher Woelke; and a favorite uncle, Kenneth Hueske of Milford, Nebraska.

Marvin L. Reese, 76

February 19, 2008

Marvin Luverne Reese, age 76, of Miller, died on Wednesday, February 13, 2008, at the Concord Care Center in Garner.

Memorial services were held on Saturday, February 16, at the Faith Lutheran Church in Miller, with Lay Pastor Rose Visser officiating. Visitation was an hour prior to the services at the church. Inurnment will be in the spring in the Madison Township Cemetery in rural Forest City. The Petersen Lund Funeral Home  was in charge of the arrangements.

Marvin Luverne Reese, was born at home in Crystal Lake, on August 11, 1931, the son of Elmer and Emily (Cunningham) Reese. He graduated from the Forest City High School in 1951 and served in the United States Air Force. He farmed with his father and brother, worked at Goldy's Mobil Station, the Forester Trailer Company and then for Winnebago Industries.

After he retired from Winnebago, he was very involved in Pheasants Forever, especially the tree projects. Marvin enjoyed woodworking and built many pieces of furniture. For several years he served as Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 19 in Garner. He loved to visit with his friends over coffee.

Marvin enjoyed his family, gardening and taking many trips to the "cabin" in Longville, Minnesota. He went there every chance he got and had many fish tales to tell about. He was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church in Miller.

He is survived by his wife, Gail Reese of Miller; and his children, David (Kandy) Hinrichs of York, Pennsylvania, Irving (Carol) Reese of Charles City, Dale Reese of Mason City, Joann Miller of Chelan, Washington, Pamela Osborne of Harcourt, Iowa and John (Dimple) Reese of Gigharbor, Washington; 19 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren; brother, Duane (Verna) Reese of Forest City; sister, Glennice (Ronald) Trail of Des Moines; and many in-laws and nieces and nephews.

Marvin was preceded in death by his parents.

Vincent Kopacek, 96

February 21, 2008

Vincent Joseph Kopacek, 96, of Britt, passed away on Thursday, February 14, 2008, at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, in Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Monday, February 18, at 10:30 a.m., at the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Britt, with Rev. Brian Dellaert and Rev. Jerry Kopacek officiating.  Burial was in the St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Duncan. Visitation was held on Sunday, from 2-5:00 p.m., at the Ewing Funeral Chapel, Britt and one hour prior to the services at the church. A Scriptural Wake Service was held at 5:00 p.m.

Vincent, the son of Frank and Elizabeth Kudej Kopacek, was born on April 10, 1911, on the family farm near Britt. He attended country school in Liberty Township and helped on the family farm. 

On January 31, 1933, Vincent was united in marriage with Rose Cecilia Rayhons at the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan. Following their marriage they rented the Kudej farm west of Duncan. In 1939, they purchased a farm in Erin Township where they built a new home and raised their family. In 1975, they moved into Britt. In their retirement Rose and Vince spent time helping on the farm, traveling and visiting their children.

Vince loved bowling and playing cards, especially his numerous games of 65 with Jim Ryburn, Clarence Seebeck, other friends and family, and 500 with the Senior Citizens. Vince had a great love for horses and had never missed a Britt Draft Horse Show in 26 years. He loved playing golf, which he didn't begin playing until age 65, his Minnesota Twins, ice cream and Rose's cooking and baking.

Vince was a member of the St. Patrick's Catholic Church and the Catholic Workmen. He was active in the community and for many years served as Director of the country school in Erin Township which was on the corner of their farm. He was on the Board of Directors of the First State Bank of Britt for several years and also the Britt Farmers Coop Board.

Vincent is survived by eight children, Doris Hempe of Britt, Shirley (Dr. Thomas) Carson of Camarillo, California, Donald (Kay) Kopacek of Britt, Roger (Mary) Kopacek of Britt, Vincent, Jr. (Janice) Kopacek of Ankeny, Carl Kopacek of Portland, Oregon, Ted (Cindy) Kopacek of Maple Grove, Minnesota and Vicki (Tom) Bueker of Bettendorf; 27 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Vivian Formanek of Britt and Marie Brcka of Britt; and numerous nieces and nephews, other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Rose on April 19, 2006; granddaughter, Liz Ann Hempe; grandson, Jeff Kopacek; two great-grandsons, Tate and McCoy Nedved; brothers, Arnold and Francis; and sisters, Helen and Evelyn at young ages; brother, Raymond; and sisters, Mildred Wellik, Lillian Chizek, Agnes Rayhons and Blanche Paca.

He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Lois M. Thomas, 74

February 19, 2008

Lois M. (Jennings) Thomas, 74, of Crystal Lake, died on Thursday, February 14, 2008, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, after a short illness with cancer.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 16, 2008, at the Ewing Funeral Chapel in Britt, with John Rollefson officiating. Visitation was held on Friday, February 15, at the Ewing Funeral Chapel in Britt and continued one hour prior to the services at the funeral chapel.

Lois was born on September 2, 1933, to Al and Orpha (Marshall) Jennings at Letts, Iowa. As a small child her family moved to the Mitchell County area where she attended various rural schools.

On September 28, 1950, she was united in marriage to Kenneth D. Heller in Princeton, Missouri. To this union six children were born, Kenneth M. Heller, Cynthia M. Caroon, LuAnn K. Brandt, Patty L. Heller, Sandra R. Wiesen, and Tammy L. Fallon.

On October 30, 1971, she was united in marriage to Charles E. Thomas and moved to the Des Moines area in 1973. She worked for Pella Windows and the Amwest Surety Insurance Company while in Des Moines. In 1983, she and Charles moved to Crystal Lake to operate the Crystal Lake Hardware Store for a few years, while she commuted to Minneapolis and worked for Amwest Surety until her retirement. Prior to her illness she was employed at Suntron in Garner, putting together circuit boards. She was most proud of her ability to read electrical diagrams and out performing her younger peers.

Lois had a passion for family and friends. Her smile was always present and ready for anyone who wanted to get to know her. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Family gatherings were a priority, celebrating birthdays and holidays. Christmas was her favorite time of the year and loved having her decorations out for all to share. When the weather was nice, she could be found working in her flower beds or on the golf course. When there were sporting events for her grandchildren she was always there, whether it was hockey, football, basketball, softball, or baseball, she was competitive by nature and wanted to see her family do well! She enjoyed her Wednesday night dart league and cheering for her Vikings. One of her hobbies was painting on crafts and Christmas ornaments. She had a talent that she loved to share with others and those were precious gifts to anyone lucky enough to receive a painting from her. She always had a sense of adventure, wanting to know all she could by reading or traveling to anyplace that she wanted to see. She was so proud of being able to drive to Laurel, Montana, in September 2007 and experience many wonderful memories with her family. She had such a big heart to all that knew her and was willing to help in any way that she could. She was a special grandma to Courtney and Chuck helping to raise them and guide them with her love. Her laughter and sense of humor will be missed, because if you knew Lois, you knew she lived life to the fullest!

She is survived by her son, Ken (Becky) Heller of Laurel, Montana; three daughters, Cindy (Duane) Caroon of Hibbing, Minnesota, Anne (Greg) Brandt of Woden and Sandy (Matt) Wiesen of Osage; 11 grandchildren, Kristin (Nate) Hunziker, Jamie Heller, Kaileigh and Scott Bartlebaugh, Trinity (Jim) Hemmila, Opal (Jim) Buck, Jason (Nicole Lovik) Blaser, Nicole (Stanley) Niece, Justin Smith, Courtney Welch and Chuck (Tess) Welch; 9 great-grandchildren; her brother, Francis (Millie) Jennings; and two sisters, Doris (Le Roy) Reynolds and Clarice Schmetzer.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charles in 1993; daughters, Patty L. Heller in infancy and Tammy L. Fallon in 2005, brother, Bill Jennings; sister, Marian Doane; and special nephew, Jay Ellis.

Alice G. Benson Gerdes, 90

February 19, 2008

Alice Gertrude Benson Gerdes, age 90, of Columbus, Mississippi, died on Thursday, February 14, 2008, at the Trinity Healthcare Center in Columbus.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Memorial Funeral Home, where the family  received friends on Saturday, February 16. Her funeral service immediately followed in the chapel of the Memorial Funeral Home, with Rev. Ron McDougald officiating. Memorials may be made to the Trinity Healthcare Center, Columbus, Mississippi.

Mrs. Gerdes was cremated following the service, and her cremains will be buried at a later date next to her husband, John F. Gerdes in the Bingham Township Cemetery in Woden. She was the daughter of the late Tom and Hannah Vorland Benson and was born in Goldfield on March 18, 1917.

Her family moved to Woden in 1925. Mrs. Gerdes was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and graduated from the Woden High School in 1936. She married John F. Gerdes and lived in Woden until 1992, when she moved to Forest City to be near her family. She later moved to Columbus in 2004, to be near her daughter and son-in-law.

She is survived by her son, John (Lori) Gerdes of Franklin, Tennessee; her daughter, Judy (Gene) Gjerde of Columbus, Mississippi; three sisters, Thelma Smith of Grand Junction, Colorado, Dorothy (Ed) Etzen and Marjorie Anderson; two brothers, Victor (Blanche) Benson and Robert Benson, all of Forest City; four grandchildren, Julie Jones of Tupelo, Mississippi, Curtis (Lisa) Gjerde of Caledonia, Mississippi, Dan Gerdes of St. Augustine, Florida and Amy (Steve) Floyd of Chelsea, Alabama; and 3 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Norman and Vance Benson.

Dana M. Davis, 83


February 19, 2008

Dana M. Davis, age 83, of Forest City, died on Friday, February 15, 2008, at her home in Forest City.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Wednesday, February 20, at 10:30 a.m., at the St. James Catholic Church in Forest City, with Fr. Brian Dellaert officiating. Burial will be in the St. James Catholic Cemetery in Forest City. Visitation was from 4-7:00 p.m., on Tuesday, at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home in Forest City and one hour prior to the services at the church.

Dana M. Davis, was born in Chicago, Illinois, on August 25, 1924, the daughter of Daniel and Margaret (Duffek) Donovan. She received her education in Chicago, graduating from high school at the age of 16. She attended Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, studying in the College of Pharmacy. When World War II broke out, she left school and worked for the Eli Lilly & Company to support the war effort preparing drugs for the soldiers.

She met Neal Davis while attending Purdue and on February 13, 1943, they were married. Neal received his degree in Civil Engineering and started his career. The family made their home in Ottumwa, Iowa, for a time before coming to Forest City in 1957, where Neal worked for Gjellefald Construction.

Dana was a stay at home mom until after her husband passed away in 1968 when she began working as a bookkeeper for Gjellefald Construction. When the company closed, she began working in the Purchasing Department at Winnebago Industries, where she worked until her retirement many years later.

Dana was an involved member of her community and gave her time freely. She served on the Oakland Cemetery Board and the Forest City Library Board. She was a gifted artist and enjoyed painting backdrops for theater productions and store windows. She was in several bridge clubs over the years and had a great time with her "Birthday Club" group of friends. She loved to decorate and her home was proof of her talent and was featured in Forest City's Tour of Homes in 1997. She was a voracious reader and an exceptional cook - "to love you was to feed you" and she did it wonderfully. She was a member of the St. James Catholic Church in Forest City.

Dana is survived by her children and their spouses, Madonna (Jim) Haigh of Plano, Texas, Kathe (David) Schwalen of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Dan (Sheila) Davis of Forest City, Pat (Tammy) Davis of Austin, Texas and Mark (Laurie) Davis of Algona; 15 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Margaret McCabe of Lafayette, Indiana.

Dana was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Neal; and a granddaughter, Nikki Davis.

The family suggests memorials be directed to the Forest City Public Library.

Diane L. Fiala, 51

February 19, 2008

Diane Lucille Fiala, 51, of Clear Lake, went to her heavenly home on Friday, February 15, 2008, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., on Tuesday, February 19, at the Church of Christ, Fertile, with Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating. Visitation was held from 5-8:00 p.m., on Monday, at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, Mason City and one hour prior to the services at the church on Tuesday.

Diane Lucille Fiala, was born on September 29, 1956, at the Offutt Air Force Base, Bellevue, Nebraska, a daughter of Dean and Beverly (Pitkin) Krieger. Raised in an Air Force family, Diane was baptized in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii in 1968.

Diane was a 1975 graduate of the Forest City High School, where she was involved in the girl's glee choir, concert choir, a member of the homecoming royalty court, and was a varsity cheerleader. She married Tim Abrams in June 1976 and to this union a son, Alan was born. Diane worked at Winnebago Industries in Forest City for 17 years as the word processing supervisor.

She was united in marriage to Joe Fiala on August 29, 1987 at Estes Park, Colorado. In 1992 she began working with her husband, Joe at their business, Fiala Office Products, Mason City.

Diane enjoyed crocheting, playing the piano, and family gatherings at their cabin, on Clear Lake. She was a member of the Quaker House Church, Mason City.

Diane accepted the Lord as her personal Savior at a very young age and her personal relationship with her Lord Jesus Christ was very important to her. Her greatest desire was to bring honor and glory to God through her life. Diane viewed her illness as an opportunity to witness to others about the saving grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and she knew that he was working through her, to reach others.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Joe Fiala of Clear Lake; daughter, Jennifer (Shaun) Krachmer of Austin, Minnesota; two sons, Alan (Camille) Abrams of Lakeville, Minnesota and Lonny Fiala and his friend, Kelly Nelson of Mason City; six grandchildren, Cory, Talon, and Kya of Austin Minnesota, Tishan, Bryce, and Tristan of Lakeville, Minnesota; her father, Dean Krieger of Forest City; twin brother, David (Unhui) Krieger of Springfield, Virginia; brother, Daryl (Tamera) Krieger of Forest City; sister, Debra (Timothy) Nelson of Forest City; mother in-law, Gladys Fiala of Mason City; sisters-in-law, Marilyn (David) Hegvedt of Austin, Texas, Connie (Dennis) Vanderpol of Urbandale and Kathy (Barnie) Clark of Clive; brother-in-law, Frank (Emily) Fiala; and a large group of nieces and nephews whom she held close to her heart.

She will be welcomed into heaven by her paternal grandparents, Irvin, Grace and Blanche Krieger; maternal grandparents, Milo and Lucille Pitkin; her mother, Beverly Krieger; father in-law, Merrill Fiala; and a grandson, William J. Fiala.

Agnes O. Hagen, 88

March 4, 2008

Agnes O. Hagen, 88, of Fort Dodge, Iowa, passed away on Friday, February 15, 2008, at her home.         

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, February 20, at the Fulton Lutheran Church, Roelyn. Visitation was held on Tuesday, at the Bruce-Graham Funeral Home. 

Agnes O. Orskog, was born on September 9, 1919, in rural Webster County, Iowa and attended the Somers Consolidated School, where she graduated in 1937. She attended Waldorf College in Forest City (1939-1941) and Drake University in Des Moines (1955-1968), where she earned her B.A. She was also a graduate student at Drake University and the University of Northern Iowa.

After first teaching at the Grand Meadow School, Washta, Iowa, she taught at the Callender Public School from 1944-1946. After time off to become a mother, she returned to teaching in 1955, serving as Language Arts and Social Studies Teacher at Prairie (Callender) until 1969. In 1969, she taught 7th Grade English, Elementary and Junior High music until 1970.  From 1970-1974 she taught 7-9 English, Grammar at Prairie (Gowrie). She retired from teaching in 1985.

She married Dale Hagen of Forest City on February 8, 1944. He was an accountant, and worked in grain merchandising in the office at Marigold Foods and AAA Motor Club.  He was the Fort Dodge City Treasurer for 17 years. 

She was a life-long member of the Fulton Lutheran Church, Roelyn. She served as church organist, music director for the Sunday School Primary Department, the Sunday School Program Director and was a member of the American Lutheran Church Women.  

Survivors include son, Denis Hagen of Wheaton, Illinois; and many loving nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ole and Andrea Orskog; her sister, Lena Harklau; and brothers, Oliver and Melverd Orskog.

LeNora C. Ouverson

February 19, 2008

LeNora Coretta Ouverson, of Hanlontown, Iowa, died on Saturday, February 16, 2008, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, February 19, at the Fertile Lutheran Church, Fertile, with Lay Minister David Halverson officiating. Interment was in the Brush Point Cemetery, Fertile. Visitation was held on Monday, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake and then one hour before the services on Tuesday at the church. The Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel was in charge of the arrangements.

LeNora was born on June 22, 1915, on the family farm in rural Joice, the daughter of Nels E. and Mary (Suby) Fjeld. She graduated from the Fertile High School in 1934 and then attended Iowa Teachers College, Cedar Falls, Iowa, where she obtained her teachers certification. She taught in rural school.

LeNora married Lawrence Ouverson on June 22, 1938, at the Beaver Creek Lutheran Church, rural Joice. They farmed in the rural Fertile area and she continued to live on the farm after her husband's death in 1950. In 1965, she moved to Forest City and later Clear Lake and in 1973 to her present home.

She enjoyed playing Rook, croquet, hide the thimble with the grandkids, going on picnics and visiting with friends and neighbors. Her visitors enjoyed her good homemade bread and pastries, especially her pies. At Christmas time they especially enjoyed her good Lefsa, Krumkaka and many of her cookies. She was the person who made the Roomegrot, and did much of the other preparation necessary when the whole Field family gathered at the family farm for Christmas Eve. She was very proud of her Norwegian Heritage.

She was a member of the Fertile Lutheran Church.

LeNora is survived by three sons, Jerry Ouverson and his wife, Donna of Fertile, Paul Ouverson and his wife, Carol of Boone and Rodney “Hap” Ouverson and his wife, MaryAnn of Springfield, Minnesota; twelve grandchildren, Jeffrey Ouverson and his wife, Dixie, Jon Ouverson and his wife, Lori, Julie Ouverson, Jodie Pick and her husband, Marc, Jamie Ouverson, Anne Marie Bice and her husband, Dan, Matthew Ouverson, Chad Ouverson  and his wife, Vidya, Michelle Peterson and her husband, Tom, Ryan Ward, Jason Ward and his wife, Nicole and Andrew Ouverson; eleven great-grandchildren, Kara, Kaitlyn, Michala, Corrigan, Kjersten, Nolan, Priya, Chandler, Lauren, Morgan and Carlyn; and many nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Ronald; five brothers Edwin, Lloyd, Carl, John and Raymond; and one sister, Laura.

Bonita L. Freeman, 60

Bonita "Bonnie" L. Freeman, 60, of Lake Mills, died on Monday, February 18, 2008, at her home in Lake Mills.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 23, at the Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills, with Rev. David E. Jordon officiating. Burial took place in the Salem Memorial Cemetery, Lake Mills. Visitation was held on Friday, February 22, at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home in Lake Mills and continued one hour prior to the services at the church on Saturday.

Cletus Studer, 77

February 27, 2008

Cletus L. Studer, died on Wednesday, February 20, 2008, at the Good Samaritan Society-Huskamp Haven in Algona, at the age of 77.

A funeral Mass was held on Monday, February 25, at 10:30 a.m., at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Wesley, with Father Randy Schon officiating. Burial was in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. The Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Wesley, was in charge of the arrangements.

Cletus Lawrence Studer, was born on October 1, 1930 in Wesley, son of Julius Phillip and Caroline Frances (Wingert) Studer. He grew up on a farm near Wesley attending the St. Joseph Catholic School thru the 8th grade. He then graduated from the St. Lawrence Seminary in Fon du Lac, Wisconsin, before returning to the area helping on the farm.

Cletus was united in marriage to Colleen Reising on August 30, 1954 in Wesley, Iowa. They farmed the family farm Southeast of Wesley for many years. In 1976, he began working at Universal Manufacturing in Algona until retiring in 1994. He loved being with his family, gardening, and working in the yard. He also enjoyed camping, playing cards, and watching sports.

He is survived by seven children, Chris (Monte) Leichsenring of Clarion, Jim Studer and fiancée, Terri Merschman of Ankeny, Dean Studer of Chapin, Illinois, Shelly (Mike) Heinze of Middle Amana, Dennis (Becky) Studer of Des Moines, Todd (Donna) Studer of Clarion and Kim (Rick) St. John of Heidelberg, Germany; 17 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nine brothers and sisters, Sr. Madeline Studer of Mankato, Minnesota, Phillip (Rosalee) Studer of Granite Falls, Minnesota, Virginia (Bill) Orthel of Dublin, Texas, Carol Elmore of Algona, Kay (Bienve) Perez-Studer of Seattle, Washington, Steve (Hope) Studer of the Caribbean, Gerald (Mary) Studer of Lewisville, Texas, Margaret Studer of Anacortes, Washington and Rose Marie Studer of Minneapolis, Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Julius and Caroline Studer; and step-mother, Minnie; his wife, Colleen on September 18, 2001; a grandchild, Victoria Studer; and brothers and sisters, Vincent, Marvin and Stan Studer, Sr. Rita Studer and Fabian, Denis and Julius Leroy in infancy.

Edwin Jacobson, 79

February 26, 2008

Edwin Jacobson, 79, of Thompson, died on Wednesday, February 20, 2008, at his home.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 23, at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Thompson, with Pastor Mark Decker officiating. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Thompson. Visitation was held on Friday, at the Winter Funeral Home in Thompson and one hour before the services at the church.

Edwin A. Jacobson, was born on December 13, 1928 in Des Moines, to Edvin and Rose (Flugum) Jacobson. He attended school in Thompson and graduated in 1946. He farmed with his father until he was drafted into the Army in June of 1951. He married Joan Johnson on November 14, 1951, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City. He was discharged on June 4, 1953, after 14 months serving in the medical corp. in Bad Kreuznach, Germany. He then returned to the family farm and resumed farming.

Edwin was a lifetime member of the Bethany Lutheran Church, lifetime member of the Buffalo Center American Legion Post 21 and Thompson VFW Post 8408, served on the board for the Thompson Wranglers Horse Club and was an active participant in the Farming of Yesteryear Show where he gave trolley rides and was instrumental in helping get the church on site.

In 2002, Edwin and Joan were able to celebrate their 50th anniversary by visiting some of the places in Germany that Edwin had been to while he was in the army.  They also traveled to Norway and throughout Europe. 

Edwin thoroughly enjoyed being outside working with his hands, tending to animals, and working in the garden.  He was also known to visit and share stories. He especially enjoyed the annual 4th of July picnic with his neighbors.

Edwin is survived by his wife of 56 years, Joan; son, Eugene of Kiester; daughter, Elizabeth Janssen and husband, Lloyd of Lakota; son, Steven and wife, Kimberly of Bricelyn; daughter, Barbara Butler and husband, Jon of Kensett; grandchildren; Michael Jacobson and wife, Akelah, Lora Rodriguez and husband, Andre, Joann and Joy McEachran and Jimmy Janssen, Brian, Ashley and Collin Jacobson; great-grandchildren, Josiah Rodriguez, Ifetayo and Diallo Jacobson; mother-in-law, Austina Johnson of Lake Mills; sisters, Ruth Hylland of Scarville and Mavis Klein of Iowa Falls; nephews, Charles Hylland of Scarville and Mark Klein of Iowa Falls; five sisters-in-law; and one brother-in-law. Edwin will be missed by many additional relatives and many good friends.

Edwin was preceded in death by his parents; father-in-law, Mandius Johnson; and brothers-in-law, Kjell Bjornsen, Paul Hylland, Bud Klein, Ray Hauan and Harlan Brandau.

Jim Grifhorst, 60

March 11, 2008

Jim R. Grifhorst, 60, of 1314 Carroll Street, died on Thursday, February 21, 2008, at UIHC of cardiac complications.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., on Monday, at the Zion Lutheran Church, with Rev. Mark Pries officiating. Burial was in the Oakland Cemetery. Friends were able to call on Sunday from 4-7:00 p.m., at the Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City, and after 1:00 p.m., on Monday, at the Church.

Jim was born on April 28, 1947 in Mason City, the son of Richard and Wilma Brand Grifhorst. In 1970 Jim received his bachelor degree in business from the University of Iowa. Jim married Linda Wilbur on September 12, 1970 in Iowa City.

Jim was a data base analyst for the College of Business Administration at the University of Iowa.

Jim was a devoted father, grandfather and friend. He loved the outdoors, and was an avid hunter and fisherman. Jim was an Eagle Scout and avid Hawkeye fan. When his sons were growing up Jim was a soccer coach and Cub Scout leader. Jim volunteered at Big Brothers-Big Sisters and Shelter House. He will be greatly missed.

Jim is survived by his three sons, B.J. of Tempe, Arizona, Kevin, (Heather) and their son, Carver of Cross Plains, Wisconsin and David of Madison, Wisconsin; Linda Grifhorst and Mickie Wiegand; his mother, Wilma of Britt; his brother, Paul of Aurora, Illinois; his sister, Lois (Wendel) Harms of Ankeny; and nieces and nephews.

Jim was preceded in death by his father.

Dorothy Larson, 93


March 11, 2008

Dorothy Marie Larson, 93, passed away on Monday, February 25, 2008, at the Fountain West Health Care Center in West Des Moines.

A memorial service was held at 2:00 p.m., on Thursday, February 28, at the Caldwell Raddatz Funeral Chapel, Urbandale, Iowa.

Dorothy was the first child born to James and Laurena Larson on August 12, 1914. She was followed by seven brothers, Bud, Jim, Merle, Glen, Cecil, Robert, Gerald, and then finally a sister, Joann. She, and all of her siblings, were born in a farm house located in the area between Crystal Lake and Britt, Iowa, known as the Upper Flat. This is near the Upper Flat Evangelical Free Church, built on land donated by Dorothy's grandfather, Martin Larson. The church celebrated its centennial in 2002 and is still in use today.

Dorothy attended the one room country school, located one mile from her home through 8th grade. She graduated from Britt High School which she attended while living during the school year with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. C.W. Jensen in Britt. Several years later, she attended AIB in Des Moines and was a member of one of the first classes at AIB.

Dorothy worked several years as a waitress in Britt and Milwaukee. She moved to Long Beach, California, where several brothers lived. She worked at Douglas Aircraft until returning to Britt when her mother became ill. She stayed in Britt, doing office work, until siblings Gerald and Joann had finished school and married. Then in the 1950's, she returned to Long Beach, to live with brother, Robert and they have lived together ever since. Dorothy worked as a bookkeeper in Long Beach until her retirement, then devoted her time to volunteer work. In the 1980's, Dorothy and Robert moved to West Des Moines to be near family.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Bud, Jim, Merle, Cecil, and Gerald; sisters-in-law, Pat and Val; and brother-in-law, Don Muhm.

She is survived by her sister, Joann Muhm and brother, Robert of West Des Moines; brother, Glen of Downey, California; sisters-in-law, Jean of Venice, California, Irene of Tucson Arizona, Marge of Kanawha, Iowa and Jeanne of Britt, Iowa; plus many nieces and nephews.

Caroline Mayland, 86


March 11, 2008

Caroline E. Mayland, 86, of Britt, died on Tuesday, February 26, 2008, at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., on Friday, at the First Lutheran Church in Britt, with Rev. Lee Nelson and Janelle Siffring, AiM officiating.  Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery in Britt. The Cataldo Funeral Home in Britt was in charge of the arrangements.

Caroline Ella Mayland, the daughter of Willie and Maude (Hennings) Meyer, was born March 18, 1921 at Titonka. She attended country school near Wesley. On December 18, 1941 she was married to Walbert B. Mayland at Grant City, Missouri. They lived and farmed in the Klemme and Britt areas until 1968 when they moved into Britt. 

Caroline was employed at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt as a nurse's aide for sixteen years. She enjoyed her family, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sewing, reading and flowers. Caroline also enjoyed making quilts for World Relief and helping the Britt American Legion Auxiliary sell poppies.

She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Britt, FLCW, Mary Circle and the Britt American Legion Auxiliary.

Caroline is survived by her husband of 66 years, Walbert B. Mayland, Sr. of Britt; children, June (Eldon) Asche of Kanawha, Walbert W. (Gloria)  Mayland, Jr. of Britt and Stanley Mayland of Hamond, Louisiana; son-in-law, Bob Shannon of Alta; 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marie (Harry) Volt of Boise, Idaho and Kathryn Mabry of California; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Esther Shannon; two infant daughters, Caroline Ella and Mary Ella Mayland; a son-in-law, George Earles; two brothers, August and Frank Meyer; and a sister, Ella Mae Martin.

Verneil Ptacek, 83

March 11, 2008

Verneil M. Ptacek, 83, of Garner, has joined her beloved husband, Clarence, on Tuesday, February 26, 2008. She passed away at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, at the St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner, with Fr. Brian Dellaert officiating. Burial was in the St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Duncan. The Cataldo Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Verneil Marie Ptacek, the daughter of Alonzo and Josephine (Spangler) Gouge, was born September 16, 1924 on a farm west of Wesley. She graduated from Wesley High School in 1942. On October 4, 1943 she was married to Clarence Ptacek at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Wesley. They made their home on a farm south of Duncan until 1953 when they moved to Estherville where they owned and operated C and V Tavern. In 1956, they moved to Wesley and in 1958 to Duncan. In 1962 they moved to their present home in Garner. 

Besides being a homemaker and raising their six children, Verneil also worked for a time at the Garner Bakery and was a cook at various restaurants in Garner. Verneil loved spending time with her family and grandchildren. She enjoyed dancing, cooking, embroidering, baking kolaches and homemade bread, working on jigsaw puzzles and completing word find books.

She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church and Rosary Society.

Verneil is survived by her six children, Joyce (Gary) Meyer of Garner, Jan (Calvin A.) Baumgartner of Garner, Karen (Dennis) Furness of Story City, Gerald (Deb) Ptacek of Cedar Rapids, Kris (Bill) Christie of Garner and Jeff (Debbie) Ptacek of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; sixteen grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence on February 9, 2008; her parents; and a sister, Marjorie Becker.

Johnnie Meyering, 82

Johnnie Meyering, age 82, of Elmore, Minnesota, passed away on Friday, February 29, 2008, at the St. Luke's Lutheran Care Center in Blue Earth, Minnesota.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, March 4, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Elmore, with Pastor Dale Kohrs officiating. Burial was in the Olena Mound Cemetery in Buffalo Center. Visitation was on Monday, at the Winter Funeral Home in Blue Earth and one hour before the services on Tuesday.

Johnnie is survived by his wife, Jerena; two sons, Johnnie Meyering Jr. and wife, Elaine of Chanhassen, Minnesota and Ronnie Meyering of Elmore, Minnesota; three daughters, Henrietta Halvorson and husband, Tom of Forest City, Teresa Lyon and husband, Craig of Champlin, Minnesota and Lorie Huebert and husband, Paul of Mankato, Minnesota; seven grandchildren, Tami Halvorson, Johnnie M. Meyering, Miranda Meyering, Jennifer Lyon, Brianna Lyon, Lorissa Hubert and Rachel Hubert; half-sister, Karen Pickerall of Minnetonka, Minnesota; and half-brother, Lawrence Skilbred of Indiana.

Johnnie was preceded in death by his parents.

Vera Hunsley, 95


March 11, 2008

Vera May Hunsley, 95, of Story City, formerly of Britt, passed away on Friday, February 29, 2008, at the Bethany Life Communities in Story City.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, March 4, at 11:00 a.m., at the United Methodist Church in Britt, with Pastor Robert Dodge officiating. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery in Britt. Visitation was held one hour prior to the services at the church on Tuesday.

Vera May Hunsley, the daughter of Layman M. and Emma (Dunham) Naser, was born on December 10, 1912 near Corwith, Iowa. She was baptized in the Christian faith and graduated from the Britt High School. After graduation she received her rural teaching diploma and taught rural school in Hancock County for several years. She also worked at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital for many years.

Vera was united in marriage with Harold Hunsley on June 9, 1941 in Lawton, Oklahoma. This union was blessed with one daughter, Arlys, who only lived a few short hours. Harold died on January 8, 1975. Vera later married Carl Korneisel on October 22, 1983 and he died February 1, 1987.

Vera was a member of the United Methodist Church in Britt and active in the women's group and her circle. She was also a member of Rebekah's Lodge and the VFW Auxiliary. Vera liked spending some of her free time on the golf course.

Vera is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Dale Shelton of Deland, Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter and two husbands; three brothers, Cecil, Donald and Clifford Naser; and three sisters, Vivian Mace, Vira Blankenship and Vida Naser.
