Richard Berge, 68

October 10, 2006

Richard L. Berge, age 68, of Forest City, died on Monday, October 2, 2006, at the Mercy Medical Center North Iowa in Mason City.

According to his wishes, Richard's body was cremated and there will be no formal services. A private Family Inurnment Service will be held at a later date at the Forest Home Cemetery in Leland, Iowa.

The Petersen Lund Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Lucille M. Drugg, 94

October 10, 2006

Lucille M. Drugg, age 94, of Forest City, died on Monday, October 2, 2006, at the Muse Norris Hospice in Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Friday, October 6, at the United Methodist Church in Forest City, with Pastor Jerald Swanberg officiating. Burial was in the Oakland Cemetery in Forest City. Visitation was held on Thursday, October 5, from 5-7:00 p.m., at the funeral home and an hour prior to the service at the church.

Lucille Marie Drugg was born on March 13, 1912 in Maynard, Minnesota to August and Rosa (Bredlow) Kropp. At age two she moved with her parents to Garner, Iowa. She graduated from the Garner High School in 1930. She began teaching in a rural Liberty Township School. On November 17, 1934, she married Floyd Drugg in Owatonna, Minnesota. She later continued teaching for several years in a rural Ellington Township School. She also worked in Forest City at the Lamp Shade Factory and Winnebago Industries/Stitchcraft.

Lucille was very active in the United Methodist Church, Senior Citizen Center and the Kum Along Klub. She also enjoyed bowling and playing cards with her friends.

Lucille is survived by two daughters, Marilyn (Dewey) Galloway of Forest City and Marlys (Bill) Austin of Columbus Junction. Also surviving are five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a brother; two sisters; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Floyd; and three brothers and two sisters.

Juilian Hagen, 88

October 10, 2006

Juilian E. Hagen, age 88, of Lake Mills, died on Wednesday, October 4, 2006, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Memorial services were held on Saturday, October 7, at the Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills, with Pastor W. Paul Weeg officiating. Visitation was held on Friday evening at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will take place in the Salem Memorial Cemetery in Lake Mills at a later date. Military Rites will be performed by the Lake Mills Otto/Chose Post #235.

The Mittelstadt Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Marlyn J. Rollefson, 75

October 10, 2006

Marlyn J. Rollefson, age 75, of Forest City, died on Friday, October 6, 2006, at his home in Forest City.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 10, at 1:30 p.m., at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City, with Pastor Lee Laaveg officiating. Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery in Forest City with Graveside Military Rites by Forest City American Legion Post 121. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 p.m., on Monday, October 5, at the funeral home and an hour prior to the services at the church. The Petersen Lund Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Marlyn James Rollefson was born on a farm in Mount Valley Township, Winnebago County, Iowa, on November 3, 1930, the son of Norman and Clarice (Solberg) Rollefson. He was baptized at the Winnebago Lutheran Church and confirmed at the Immanuel Lutheran Church. He received his education in rural schools near his home and graduated from the Forest City High School in 1948. He served in the United States Army from 1952 to 1954.

On August 3, 1958, he married Margaret Boland at the Peace Reformed Church in Garner, Iowa. The couple made their home on a farm east of Forest City where Marlyn farmed. Margaret passed away in 1980. On August 4, 1984, Marlyn was united in marriage to Shirley (Thompson) Anderson.

Marlyn was an active member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church where he ushered for over 20 years and served on the Board of Trustees. He operated an Allis-Chalmers Dealership for a few years and was a member of the Forest City Elevator Board years ago. He was a member of Farm Bureau and for over 50 years a member of the American Legion.

Marlyn liked to collect antiques and enjoyed bowling and fishing. He treasured time spent on the farm with his grandchildren and loved playing billiards with family and friends.

Marlyn is survived by his wife, Shirley of Forest City; and three sons, Jon (Laura) Rollefson of Thompson, Joel (Kandi) Rollefson of Charles City and Jay Rollefson of Lake Mills. Also surviving is a brother, Ronald (Karen) Rollefson of Mesa, Arizona; and step-sons, Mark (Kamille) Anderson and Gene (Sheri) Anderson; seven grandsons; two granddaughters; and three great-grandchildren, Bailey Johnson and Taj & Sydney Anderson; and several nieces and nephews.

Marlyn was preceded in death by his parents; and his first wife, Margaret.

Olaf Book, 83

October 17, 2006

Olaf (Ole) Book, age 83, of Forest City, died on Monday, October 9, 2006, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, October 12, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City, with Rev. Lee Laaveg officiating. Burial was in the Madison Township Cemetery in Forest City. Visitation was held on Wednesday, October 11, at the funeral home and one hour prior to services at the church. The Petersen Lund Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Olaf Otto Book, was born on a farm near Forest City, Iowa on May 25, 1923, the son of Swedish immigrants, Otto Olaf and Ida (Martinson) Book. He attended schools in Madison Township, Hancock County and Forest City. After graduating from the 8th grade, he worked at various jobs and with his family on the farm until being drafted into the US Army on July 14, 1943. He served in the European Theater and spent time as a POW in an Austrian prison camp. Following his discharge from the service he returned to Forest City.

On May 1, 1948, he was married to Ellen Homes at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City. The couple had one son, Douglas. Ole began working at Hawkes Pool Hall in Forest City. He later worked for Winnebago County and then for Winnebago Industries until his retirement. He liked working part-time transporting cars for local auto dealers and treasured spending time with his friends at the Senior Citizen Center. He took many fishing trips with friends and enjoyed taking a drive around the countryside.

Ole is survived by two brothers and sisters-in-law, Dell & Wanda Book of Forest City and Harold & Marlys Book of Fertile; one sister and brother-in-law, Violet and Ray Charlson of Forest City; three brothers-in-law, Bob Homes of Surprise, Arizona, LeRoy Homes of Vancouver, Washington and Duane Reese of Colo, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.

Ole was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ellen; and his son, Douglas. Also two sisters, Luella Johnson and Emily Harringa; five brothers, Gustaf, Albert, Clarence, Everett and Floyd Book; two brothers-in-law, Clarence Johnson and Ben Harringa; and three sisters-in-law, Pearl Book, Dorothy Book and Margaret Book.

Marjorie Walton, 81

October 17, 2006

Marjorie Elaine Walton, of Glenville, Minnesota, died on Wednesday, October 11, 2006, at the Albert Lea Medical Center. She was 81 years old.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, October 14, at the United Methodist Church, Glenville, Minnesota. Pastor Joyce Shaman officiated. Burial was in the Hillcrest Cemetery. Visitation was held on Friday, October 13, at the Bonnerup Funeral Chapel in Albert Lea and one hour before the services at the church.

Marjorie was born in Winnebago County, Iowa on May 10, 1925, the daughter of Elmer and Cora (Peterson) Jensen. She attended the school in Leland. On September 8, 1942, Marjorie was united in marriage with William P. Walton in Marysville, Missouri. She was a helpmate with William while farming near Glenville since 1944.

Marjorie was a member of the United Methodist Church where she had been active in women's groups and as a communion steward. Marjorie belonged to the neighborhood charity club for many years. She enjoyed music, dancing, sewing, and embroidering.

Marjorie is survived by four children, Bluette “Kay” (Luther) Gesme of Paullina, Iowa, Korla (Kraig) Schuhmacher of Albert Lea, Minnesota, Renae (Jim) Herr of Emmons, Minnesota and Kevin (Terri) Walton of Glenville, Minnesota; six grandchildren, Jill (Russ) Bennett of Paullina, Dr. Jayson (Mandy) Gesme of Waterloo, Kory Schuhmacher and his fiance, Shari Omdol of Cambridge, Minnesota, Kyle (Jane) Schuhmacher of Arlington Heights, Illinois, Tony (Melissa) Herr of Twin Lakes, Minnesota, Holly Herr of Emmons, Minnesota; five great-grandchildren, Amy Bennett, Andrew and Matthew Schuhmacher, Dylan and Hailey Herr; four sisters, Evelyn Wogen of Lake Mills, Lavonne (Raymond) Hagen of Forest City, Gloria (Irvin) Hagen of Manly and Charlotte (Ray) Limesand of Desert Lake, Calfornia; and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William in 2000; two children, Paula Mar Walton and an infant son; and brother-in-law, Stanley Wogen.

Marjorie was a loving and caring person. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Blessed be her memory.

Marie Hodson, 81

October 17, 2006

Marie A. Hodson, age 96, of Forest City, formerly of Crystal Lake, died on Friday, October 13, 2006, at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, October 17, at the Crystal Lake United Methodist Church in Crystal Lake, Iowa, with Pastor Jerald Swanberg officiating. Burial was in the Crystal Lake Cemetery. Visitation was held on Monday, October 16, at the funeral home and an hour prior to services at the church.

Goodwin Bergerud, 78

October 24, 2006

Goodwin T. (Goodie) Bergerud, age 78, of Forest City, died on Saturday, October 14, 2006, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Monday, October 23, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Forest City. Burial was in the Oakland Cemetery in Forest City. Visitation was held on Sunday, October 22, at the funeral home and an hour prior to the service at the church. The Petersen Lund Funeral Home  was in charge of the arrangements.

Goodwin Theodor (Goodie) Bergerud, was born at home in Aastead Township, Minnesota, on January 10, 1928, the son of Hans and Hilda (Ongstad) Bergerud. He attended school in Aastead Township through the 8th grade. He left school to work on the farm with his father. He enlisted in the United States Army on November 27, 1946, and served at the Panama Canal until his honorable discharge on June 1, 1948. He was united in marriage to Grace Smidt in 1951 and together they had five children. The marriage later ended in divorce.

On January 10, 1968, he married Vera Nieman. The couple made their home in Forest City where Goodie worked as an electrician for the City of Forest City.

He loved to play the guitar and played in several bands over time. He enjoyed camping and traveling with Vera, and also enjoyed working with mechanics and tools on remodeling projects. Goodie is known for creating unusual "toys" from old cars, bikes and motorcycles.

He is survived by two daughters, Sharon Boyd of Woodland, Alabama and Barbara (Lloyd) Reddick, of Remlap, Alaska; his sons, Dan (Sandy ) Bergerud of Virginia, Illinois, Steve (Kim) Bergerud of Iowa City and Michael (Jeanne) Bergerud of Slidell, Louisiana.

Also surviving are his step-children, Peg Long of Ankeny, Ron Nieman of Mason City, Barbara (Michael) Van Hooser of Russellville, Missouri, Susan (Todd) Kempf of Cedar Falls and Kris (Bryan) Runyan of Ankeny; as well as 22 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Also, Goodie's sisters, Esther Ugstad of Fergus Falls, Minnesota and Ruth Bryant of Gardnerville, Nevada; two sisters-in-law, Joan Schildt and Linda Swanson of Seward, Nebraska; and several nieces, nephews and many friends.

Goodie was preceded in death by his wife, Vera; and his parents, Hans and Hilda Bergerud; two brothers; and two sisters.

Obert Quisling, 96

Obert Roy Quisling, 96, of Lake Mills, died on Monday, October 16, 2006, at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, October 19, at the Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills, with Pastor W. Paul Weeg officiating. Visitation was held on Wednesday, at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home in Lake Mills and again one hour prior to the service. Burial was in the Salem Memorial Cemetery in Lake Mills.

Matthew Chizek

October 24, 2006

Matthew Michael Chizek, newborn son of Matthew and Rhiannon Chizek, died on Monday, October 16, 2006, at the Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. 

Funeral services were held on Saturday, October 21, at the Hamilton's Altoona Funeral Home in Altoona, with Father Howard Fitzgerald officiating.  Burial was in the Altoona Cemetery. Pallbearers were his uncles, Jared Chizek, Travis Chizek, Lee Geisinger and Marc Riley.

Survivors include his parents, Matthew and Rhiannon Chizek of Altoona; paternal grandparents, Jerry and Pam Chizek of Manson and Lornelle and Ted Riley of Emmetsburg; maternal grandparents, Linda and Loren Scheiber of Baltimore, Maryland and Ron and Soyna Geisinger of Sioux Rapids; paternal great-grandmothers, Blanche Chizek of Britt, Phil and Donna Lachelt of Manson and Helen Riley of Emmetsburg; paternal great-great-grandmothers, Elsie Formanek of Garner and Arlene Peitersen of Manson; maternal great-grandparents, Darrold and Dorothy Tatman of Sioux Rapids and Bruce Geisinger of Sioux Rapids.

Nancy Nelson, 74

October 24, 2006

Nancy A. Nelson, 74, of Britt, passed away on Tuesday, October 17, 2006, at the Hospice of North Iowa in Mason City.

Graveside services for Nancy Nelson were held on Friday, October 20, at 10:30 a.m., in the Evergreen Cemetery in Britt, with Pastor Robert Dodge officiating. Visitation was held on Thursday, October 19, from 5-7:00 p.m., at the Ewing Dugger Funeral Chapel, Britt.

Nancy, the daughter of David and Bertha (Ritmiller) Lloyd, was born on May 11, 1932 in Mason City. She attended country schools in the Britt area. On October 20, 1951, Nancy was united in marriage with Harvey Nelson at the Evangelical Free Church in Britt. The couple farmed the early part of their marriage. Nancy worked at the Dairy Sweet and later made Pizzas at Casey's in Britt, where she would write special messages on the boxes for special customers. While she was employed at Casey's she would play Mrs. Claus at Christmas time.

Nancy loved spending time with her family, especially her great-granddaughter, Whytnie Payge whom she adored. Nancy, Harvey & their grandson, Christopher enjoyed camping, fishing & coon hunting. She also would go with Harvey to run his trap line and then with Christopher after Harvey died. She enjoyed wildlife and especially loved feeding and watching the birds and squirrels. Nancy also loved to knit and teaching other people how to knit. She had many many friends and some very special neighbors who would look out for her.

Nancy was a Charter Member of the Britt Lioness and member of the Royal Neighbors. She was a Brownie troop, Girl Scout and Boy Scout Leader. She was a big Minnesota Twins fan and would have given anything to have met the team.

Nancy is survived by her son, Harvey Nelson of Britt; daughter, Jo Ellen Johnson and husband, Allen (A. J.) of Kanawha; three grandchildren, Christopher Johnson and wife, Shannon of Kanawha, Christina Kelly and husband, Sean of Margate, Florida and Holly Nelson of Margate, Florida; great-granddaughter, Whytnie Payge Johnson; brother, Clyde Lloyd and wife, Sherri of Las Vegas, Nevada; and numerous other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harvey; brother, Howard Lloyd; and her little dogs, Maizie B and Pierre Von Jerome Nelson.

Betty Kerns, 83

October 24, 2006

Betty Kerns, 83, of Britt, died on Wednesday, October 18, 2006, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Memorial services were held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, October 21, at the United Methodist Church in Britt, with Rev. Robert Dodge officiating.  Music was provided by organist, Mary Kopacek who accompanied soloist, Jim Sweers and congregational hymns. Ushers were Harry Smith and Harold Wallen. Honorary bearers were Nick May, Ivy May, Luke May, Paige May, Clay Hopes, Alex Hopes and Jacob Hopes. Private family inurnment was in the Evergreen Cemetery. The Cataldo Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to the Britt UMC, Hospice of North Iowa or the Alzheimers Association.

Betty Lou A. Kerns, the daughter of James and Mary (Pyle) Trimble, was born on September 25, 1923, on a farm near Rolfe. She graduated from the Ware High School, where she was in the top ten of her class, and enjoyed playing basketball. On January 13, 1945, she was married to Merle Eugene Kerns at Rochester, Minnesota. They lived in Ringsted until 1951 when they moved to Britt and established their John Deere business, Kerns Implement. Betty raised their children and later helped Moe as a bookkeeper. They operated the business which included John Deere, Honda and other sideline businesses for 48 years, retiring when they were 76 years old. 

Betty enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren, gardening, sewing, bowling, baking pies and cinnamon rolls, having fun and dancing. She was a member of the UMC, UMW, Kerns Bowling Team, VFW Auxiliary, Card Club, Women's Club, Sweet Adelines, women's coffee group and DAR.  She was a Girl Scout Leader and top poppy seller for the VFW Auxiliary.

Betty is survived by her husband, M. E. “Moe” Kerns of Britt; 5 daughters, Pamela Kerns of Indian Hills, Colorado, Patricia (Bill) Hopes of Treynor, Deborah Kerns of Adel, Linda Kerns of Omaha, Nebraska and Rebecca (Mike) May of Britt; grandchildren, Nick, Ivy, Luke and Paige May and Clay, Alex, and Jacob Hopes; sisters, Marie Jeffers of Laurens and Ruth Dexter of Pocahontas; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Gladys, Hazel, Elnor, Celia and Vera; and brothers, Kenneth, Oscar, Roy, James and Leslie.

Franklin Russell Miller, 71

October 31, 2006

Franklin Russell Miller, passed away peacefully in his home, on Wednesday, October 25, 2006, in Leland, Iowa.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, October 28, in Lime Springs.
 
Franklin Russell Miller, Sr., was born the son of Earl and Evelyn (Woodson) Miller of West Union, Iowa, on August 25, 1935, and was raised in Lime Springs, Iowa. He served in the United States Air Force from July 23, 1954 to January 4, 1958. He married Shirley Marie Cherry of Carlsbad, New Mexico on April 28, 1956. He was a truck driver for the Ruan Transport Corp. for about 15 years until his retirement. He enjoyed spending time with his family, collecting Farmall tractors, attending auctions, attending tractor pulls and classic car shows.

Those carrying Franklin's memory strong are his wife, Shirley; three sons and one daughter, Franklin (Polly) Miller, Jr. of Forest City, Connie (Randy) Remling of Kingman, Arizona, Jerry (LuAnn) Miller of Rochester, Minnesota and John (Julie) Miller of Edgewood, Iowa; fourteen grandchildren, Jason (Tracy) Craft, Shawn (Jessica) Miller, Clinton (Michelle) Craft, Ronnie Miller, Jerry Miller, Jr., Crystal (Jacob) Umbaugh, Adam Miller, Bradley Miller, Randy Remling, Steven Miller, Nick Miller, Brandon Remling, Britany Miller and Denise Miller; nine great-grandchildren, Christopher and Brooklyn Craft, Bethany and Kaitlyn Craft, Kaylee Miller, Kaleb and Shelby Umbaugh, McKenzie Miller and Ian Miller; sisters, Helen Ash of Charles City and Audrey (Robert) Ramaker of Keokuk; and his brother, Robert (Shirley) Miller of Gillette, Wyoming.

He is preceded in death by his son, Michael Jacob; parents, Evelyn and Earl; and seven brothers and sister.

The Lindstrom Funeral Home of Riceville, was in charge of the arrangements.
