Beloved "Grand
Patriarch" of hoboes, Steam Train Maury dead at 89
By ANGIE
JOHANNSEN, News-Tribune Editor; Posted online
November 20, 2006.
The news spread
quickly through the hobo community and beyond that
longtime hobo favorite Steam Train Maury Graham had
passed away on Saturday at age 89.
Steam Train had
suffered a stroke in recent weeks and died of
complications in Napoleon, Ohio.
The news hit
especially hard in Britt, where Steam Train took up
residence each summer during the National Hobo
Convention. For many, he was a traveling pitchman
for Britt and the hobo way of life. For others, like
National Hobo Foundation President, Linda Hughes and
her sister, Mary Jo the loss is more personal.
“Even in his
ailing years, we looked to him for guidance,” said
Mary Jo. “He was like the father of our hobo family
- that's what he meant to all of us, he was like our
dad.”
Linda calls Steam
Train “a legacy, a true hobo hero” and says he's
responsible for so many things the hoboes have in
Britt today.
Steam Train was a
founding member of the Hobo Foundation. In 1974 he
joined forces with hoboes Hood River Blackie and
Feather River John to preserve hobo history.
The trio drew up
their letter of incorporation, filed for tax-exempt
status, and along with several Britt locals, paved
the road that eventually led to the Hobo Cemetery,
Museum and Hobo Jungle.
Steam Train was
honored for his accomplishments in 2004 when he was
dubbed the Grand Patriarch of Hoboes during the hobo
convention. It was an honor never before given and
one the hoboes say will rest with Steam Train.
Steam Train, who
holds the distinction of having been National Hobo
King five times, is survived by Wanda, his wife of
69 years.
