Irene Ubben

ACKLEY - Irene R. Ubben, 84, of Ackley, died Monday, June 4, 2001, at the Dumont Care Center. Services will be held Wednesday, June 6 at 10:30 a.m. at the Austinville Christian Reformed Church in Austinville with burial in the Austinville Cemetery. Rev. George McGuire will officiate.

Irene was born Feb. 18, 1917, on a farm east of Austinville to Rykus and Lizzie Harken Rykena. She graduated from Aplington High School in 1934 and on Feb. 9, 1939 she married Theodore Ubben at the Little Brown Church at Nashua. She and her husband farmed southwest of Dumont for two years then moved to west of Austinville. She was a homemaker and a member of the Aplington Christian Reformed Church; Tops of Ackley; and Get Off Your Rocker in Aplington.

She is survived by two sons, Thomas and wife, Sharon, of Aplington and Dale and wife, Lori, of Ackley; a daughter, Marilyn LaPiere of Ridgeland, Miss.; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Theodore in 1974.

William Tietz

ELDORA - William "Doc" Tietz, 79, of Eldora, died Thursday, May 31, 2001, at the Good Shepherd Heatlth Care Center in Mason City from Alzheimer's disease. Services were held Monday, June 4 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Eldora with burial in the Eldora Cemetery. Pastor David Platt officiated.

Bill was born July 10, 1921, in Eldora to Herman and Lydia Guenther Tietz. He graduated from Eldora High School in 1938 and Iowa State University with a degree in Veterinary Medicine. He practiced in Eldora for 39 years. On Oct. 26, 1947, he married Elizabeth "Betty" Oldenburg in Eldora. He enjoyed his profession and was a past board member of the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association. He was a member of the Rotary Club, served as past chairman of the board at 2nd National Bank of Eldora, had served on the County Board of Education and past president of the Eldora Memorial Hospital Board. He served as a livestock judge at the Hardin County Fair for many years and in 1963 was named Eldora Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year. He built and operated the Eldora Town & Country Mobile Home Park in Eldora. Bill was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Eldora and enjoyed sports, music, bird watching, gardening and traveling.

He is survived by two daughters, Janann Price and husband, Brad, of Clear Lake and Trudy Martin and husband, John, of Urbandale; two sons, Bill and wife, Sue, of West Branch and Dan and wife, Cindy, of Atalissa; a sister, Betty Rieke and husband, Ralph, of Fairmont, Minn.; and nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Betty, in 1993; a brother Ted and an infant sister.

Mel Thorson

WILLIAMS - Mel Thorson, 88, of Williams, died Monday, June 4, 2001, at the Heritage Care Center in Iowa Falls. Memorial services will be held Tuesday, June 12 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Williams with inurnment at the Williams Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday, June 11, from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Williams. A memorial fund has been established.

Edna Hartkopp

POPEJOY - Edna Otellie Hartkopp, 91, of Popejoy, died Thursday, May 31, 2001, at the USA Health Care Center in Dows. Services were held Monday, June 4 at the First Lutheran Church in Dows with burial in the Alden Cemetery. Pastor Paul Thompson officiated.

Edna was born June 24, 1909, in Dows to Oliver and Alice Gorder Gardalen. She attended rural Dows schools. On Dec. 22, 1928, she married Walter Hartkopp at her parents home in Dows. They farmed north of Popejoy until 1958 when they retired from farming and moved into Popejoy. Edna worked for the Ellsworth turkey plant for several years. She was an active member of the First Lutheran Church at Dows, FLCW, Popejoy Improvement Club and Popejoy Senior Citizens.

She is survived by a son, Merle and wife, Martha, of Popejoy; a daughter-in-law, Arlene Faye of Ankeny; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren; four brothers, Harley of Popejoy, Floyd of Denver, Colo., Lloyd of Broomfield and Leo of Clear Lake. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Walter in 1973; her stepmother, Anna Gardalen; two brothers, Lester and Donald; a sister, Selma Erickson; a son, Orville, and a grandson, Michael Hartkopp.

The Elledge Funeral Home of Dows was in charge of arrangements.

Tammi Guenther

TOMAH, Wis. - Tammi L. Guenther, 42, of Tomah, Wis, died Thursday, May 31, 2001, at the Tomah Memorial Hospital. Services were held Monday, June 4 at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Tomah with graveside rites at Calvary Cemetery in Rochester, Minn. Pastor John Wille officiated.

Tammi was born May 11, 1959, in Rochester to Allan and Eunice Luedke Strelow. She graduated from high school in Rochester and she attended Rochester Area Vocational Institute graduating in the Dental Assistant Program. On April 11, 1981, she married Michael Guenther in Rochester. They lived throughout the United States as a military family, moving to Tomah in 1997. She enjoyed volunteering at the children's schools and taught Sunday School. One of her special contributions was volunteering at the Relay for Life and in 1999, she was the honorary chairman. She enjoyed crafting, especially sewing and ceramics.

She is survived by her husband, Mike, of Tomah; her children, Cory and Kelsey; her parents, Allan and Eunice Strelow of Rochester; three sisters, Michelle Potter and husband, John, of Rochester, Debra Sells and husband, Bill, of Iowa Falls, and Stephanie Behne and husband, Rich, of Rochester; and many nieces and nephews.

Rachel Dearing

PHOENIX, Ariz. - Rachel Nadine Dearing, 76, of Phoenix, formerly of Alden, died Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at Phoenix. There will be no service but there will be inurnment at the Alden Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Honey Creek Preservation Group, at New Providence.

Rachel was born May 16, 1925, in New Providence to Ralph and Marie Humeston Walton. She was a descendant of the Quaker Reece family who founded the Quaker communities of New Providence and Honey Creek. She graduated from Alden High School in 1943, Ellsworth College and AIB College in Des Moines, majoring in secretarial science and playing on the basketball team. She moved to Phoenix in 1948 and on Sept. 4, 1953, she married George Dearing. She was secretary to the principal of two high schools in Phoenix and she and her husband were members of the Dons of Arizona for 43 years.

She is survived by her husband, George, of Phoenix; a daughter, Diane ; a son, Hugh and wife, Leslie; five grandchildren and a sister, Sara Lee Henslee. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Philip.

Donald Dannen

PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - Donald Dannen, 80, of Prescott Valley, Ariz., formerly of Alden, died March 25, 2001, in Prescott. Memorial services were held March 29 at Mingus View Presbyterian Church in Prescott Valley with inurnment Saturday, June 9 at 1 p.m. at the Alden Cemetery. Following the inurnment there will be a time of fellowship and remembrances at the Alden Public Library.

Donald was born Oct. 25, 1920, at Melbourne to Ralph and Meta Hartkopp Dannen. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and worked as a building contractor in Prescott Valley for 25 years. He enjoyed softball and enjoyed working with youth. He was inducted into the Iowa Softball Hall of Fame in 1993. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 108 of Prescott Valley; the Mingus View Presbyterian Church, where he helped organize and build the church. He had been married to his wife, Ethel, for 53 years.

He is survived by his wife, Ethel, of Prescott Valley; two sons, Scott and wife, Jean, of Dewey, Ariz. and Blake of Prescott Valley; a sister, Eleanora Larson of New Hampton and four grandchildren.

Gilbert Behn

HAMPTON - Gilbert F. Behn, 86, of Hampton, died Friday, June 1, 2001, at the Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility at Hampton. Services will be held Wednesday, June 6 at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hampton with burial in the Hampton Cemetery. Rev. Kenneth Krueger will officiate.

Gilbert was born Feb. 25, 1915, at Hampton to Rudolf and Anna Dohrmann Behn. He graduated from Sheffield High School and on Dec. 6, 1940, he married Marguerite Kruse at Hampton. He was a lifetime farmer in Franklin County and served as county supervisor for twelve years. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where he served as Sunday School teacher and was a 4-H leader for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Marguerite, of Hampton, two sons, Curtis and wife, Rosa, of Willow, Alaska and Roger and wife, Carol, of Omaha, Neb.; two daughters, Karolyn Haugland and husband, Red, of Thornton and Marilyn Behn of Hampton; a brother, Ernie Behn and wife, Maruee, of Boone; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters and four brothers.

Evelyn Bass

HAMPTON - Evelyn "Babe" Bass,83, of Hampton, died Sunday, June 3, 2001, at the Hampton Care Center. Services will be Thursday, June 7 at 1:30 p.m. at Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton with burial in Hillside Cemetery, Sheffield. Rev. Remigio Panlaqui will officiate. Visitation will be Wednesday, June 6 from 4 - 7 at the funeral home.

Evelyn was born May 16, 1918, in Franklin County to John and Margaret O'Hearn Parks. She attended Hollingsworth country school near Chapin. On Oct. 16, 1941, she married Gerald Bass in Missouri. They ran Babes Restaurant in Sheffield for many years. They lived their married life in Chapin and Evelyn had lived in Hampton the past twenty years. She was a member of the Salem Methodist Church in Chapin and the Hampton Senior Citizens.

She is survived by a son, Charles and wife, Bev, of Ames; a daughter, Judy Rieman and husband, Merlin, of Hampton; a brother, Clyde Parks, of Hampton; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three sisters; and four brothers.

Marie Wood

IOWA FALLS - Marie Wood, 70, of Iowa Falls, died Thursday, June 7, 2001, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City. Services were held Tuesday, June 12, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Iowa Falls, with burial in Friends Cemetery, Iowa Falls. Rev. Kenneth Krueger officiated.

Marie was born July 25, 1930, in Pomona, Calif., to Orin and Olive Brough Welch. On Nov. 2, 1958, she married Arnold Wood at Las Vegas, Nev. She was employed as a child care provider for many years.

She is survived by four sons, John Sanders and fiancée, Mary Beth, of Illinois, Robert Sanders of Ames, Michael Sanders and wife, Cindy, of Geneva, and Orin Sanders of Bloomfield; two daughters, Cheryl Stotser and her fiancé, Dan Butler, of Iowa Falls, and Carol Wood of Iowa Falls; 22 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Arnold.

Dallas Prouty

DALLAS PROUTY, 78, OF ACKLEY, IOWA, AND FORMERLY OF IOWA FALLS, PASSED AWAY MONDAY AT HIS HOME. DALLAS HAD DONATED HIS BODY TO THE UNIVERSITY OF OSTEOPATHIC MEDICINE, DES MOINES, IOWA. MEMORIAL SERVICES FOR DALLAS PROUTY WILL BE 4:30 PM THURSDAY AT LINN'S FUNERAL HOME CHAPEL, IOWA FALLS. THERE WILL BE AN ELKS MEMORIAL SERVICE FOLLOWING. Dallas Leander Prouty was born March 1, 1923, at Nashua, Iowa, the son of Arthur and Anna Lou " Griener " Prouty. He attended country schools. He served a short time with the United States Navy during World War II.

On August 29, 1943, He was united in marriage to Juanita Naomi Jones, at the Little Brown Church, Nashua, Iowa. He was a salesman for Graphics Plus, Iowa Falls, retiring in 1999, and previously had been employed with the Lee Wayne Company as a salesman. He was a member of Immanuel Memorial United Church of Christ, Alden, Iowa; the Hyman - Peavey American Legion Post # 188, Iowa Falls, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Iowa Falls; serving as past Exalted Ruler and Board of Directors.

Dallas is survived by his wife: Juanita Prouty of Ackley, Iowa; one daughter: Gloria Ward of Adel, Iowa; three sons: Danny Prouty and wife Jeannie of Alden, Iowa, Tracy Prouty and wife Sally of Iowa City, Iowa, Rick Prouty and wife Katie of Le Mars, Iowa; eight grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Arthur and Anna Lou Prouty; one son: Gary Prouty; two sisters: Florence Prouty and Dessa Sheppard; and two brothers: Glen Prouty and Francis Prouty.

Hazel Lettow

ALDEN - Hazel Marie Lettow, 94, of Alden, died Monday, June 11, 2001, at the Valley View Nursing and Rehab Center in Eldora. Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 14, at 10 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Alden, with burial in the Alden Cemetery. Rev. Jay Jaeger will officiate. Visitation is from noon to 7 p.m. at Linn's Funeral Home in Iowa Falls, where the family will receive friends between the hours of 5 - 7 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the family in care of her son, James Lettow, 15756 G. Avenue, Alden.

Hazel was born Aug. 22, 1906, at Eldora, to William and Anna Kuhfus Ziesman. She attended rural schools and graduated from Eldora High School in 1924. She was a secretary with the Hardin County Farm Bureau in Eldora, and a secretary with Anderle Furniture and Funeral Home in Eldora. On Oct. 12, 1932, she married Herbert John Lettow at the Buckeye Lutheran Church parsonage. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Alden, and was a previous member of the Buckeye Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday school and was Sunday school superintendent. She was a member of of the Alden Senior Citizens and longtime member of the Alden Cemetery Association. Her hobbies were knitting, crocheting, gardening and raising flowers.

She is survived by a son, James Lettow and wife, Joy, of Alden; two daughters, Connie Wagner and husband, Kenneth, of Eldora, and Lois Kapfer of Ames; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Helen Cable of Eldora. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son-in-law, Richard Kapfer; and two sisters, Vadna Eggleston and Lois Vierkandt.

Rosella Klug

RADCLIFFE - Rosella Margaret Klug, 91, of Radcliffe, died Friday, June 8, 2001, at the Heritage Care Center in Iowa Falls. Services were held Tuesday, June 12, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Radcliffe, with burial in the Radcliffe Cemetery. Rev. Daniel Hart officiated.

Rosella was born March 30, 1910, at Lakefield, Minn., to Carl and Julia Berve Teig. Her family moved to Radcliffe in 1916 after the death of her father. She received her education in the Radcliffe Public School. On Jan. 5, 1928, she married LeRoy Klug. She worked at a local restaurant, the Radcliffe Signal paper, for Doctor Hess and 25 years as a cook at the Radcliffe chool. She was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Radcliffe where she taught Sunday School and was a member of the ALCW.

She is survived by two sons, Eugene and wife, Erma, of Stoughton, Wis., and Daniel and wife, Dorothy, of Carl Junction, Mo.; two grandchildren, Sharon Herrington and David Klug; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Clara Larson of Hubbard, and Coral Berndt of Iowa Falls; and a sister-in-law, Lenora Klug of Radcliffe. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; six brothers; two sisters; five brothers-in-law; and six sisters-in-law.

Raymond Hippen

WELLSBURG - Raymond Hippen, 71, of Wellsburg, died of cancer, Thursday, June 7, 2001. Services were held Monday, June 11, at the United Reformed Church in Wellsburg, with burial in Shiloh Cemetry, Wellsburg. Pastor Harold Miller officiated.

Raymond was born Nov. 13, 1929, at Grundy Center, to Jake and Mattie Riebkes Hippen. He attended rural schools in German Township and worked as a farm hand. On May 18, 1948, he married Mary Abbas at East Friesland Presbyterian Church near Ackley. They farmed northwest of Wellsburg until 1972 when they moved into town. His hobbies were leathercraft and woodworking, items which were displayed Camp Sunnyside, and made as gifts for his family. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, reading and computer research.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; two daughters, Marilyn Adelmund and husband, Jerry, of Parkersburg, and Donna Crosser and husband, Harold, of Iowa Falls; a son, Arnold and wife, Pat, of Flandreau, S.D.; a brother, Delbert, of Wellsburg; a sister, Anna Marie Card, of Parkersburg; seven grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother, Ella; and a son-in-law, Tony Woodley.

Bradley Norem

RADCLIFFE - Bradley Owen Norem, 29, of Radcliffe, died Saturday, June 16, 2001, at his home in New Haven, Mo. Services will be held Saturday, June 23 at 1:30 p.m. St. John's United Methodist Church in Radcliffe with burial in the Radcliffe Cemetery. Pastor Dana Williams will officiate. Visitation will be held two hours prior to the service. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the YMCA Hertko Hollow Camp at Boone.

Bradley was born Aug. 24, 1972, in Iowa Falls, to Selmer and Minnie Norem. He graduated from the Hubbard-Radcliffe Schools in 1990. He moved to Missouri and held various construction jobs until being seriously injured in an automobile accident in 1998, that left him disabled. Bradley died of diabetic complications at his home in New Haven.

He is survived by his mother, Minnie Norem, of Iowa Falls; a sister, Rebecca Nibe and husband, Don, of Blairsburg; two brothers, Loyal Palmateer and wife, Linda, of Alden, and Eric Norem and wife, Jessica, of New Haven, Mo.; four nieces; eight nephews; and several aunts and uncles. He was preceded in death by his father.

Boeke Funeral Home in Radcliffe, will officiate.

Kenneth Lycke

ALDEN - Kenneth Lycke, 96, formerly of Alden, died Tuesday, June 19, 2001, at Heritage Care Center in Iowa Falls. Memorial services will be held Tuesday, June 26 at 10:30 a.m. at Linn's Funeral Home Chapel in Iowa Falls, with inurnment in the Rowan Cemetery.

Kenneth was born Feb. 25, 1905, to Hans and Lena Jones Lycke. He attended public school in Boone. On Sept. 16, 1930, he married Gladys Whitten in the Methodist Church parsonage at Rowan. They farmed at Dike for a time and in 1935, he began working for the Chicago and Northwestern Railway on the section crew, retiring in 1970. They lived in Rowan and in 1986 they moved to Alden. He entered Heritage Care Center in 1999.

He is survived by a daughter, Delores Jackson and husband, Jim, of Rowan; a son Ivan Dean and wife, Elsie, of Alden; five grandchildren Richard Taylor of Rowan, Barbara Hyland of Des Moines, Kevin Lycke of Buckeye, Karl Lycke of Ackley, and Kaylene Lycke of Boone; nine great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Pearl Lycke of Boone. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two sisters, Vera Williams and Lillian Allen; and four brothers, Frank, Lee, Lloyd and Vern.
