ACKLEY - Ernest Henry
Boekhoff, 81, of
Aplington, died Tuesday,
July 3, 2001, at the
Presbyterian Village in
Ackley. Services were
held Friday, July 6, at
West Friesland
Presbyterian Church in
Ackley, with burial in
the West Friesland
Cemetery. Rev. Randy
Crane officiated.
Ernest was born Jan. 29,
1920, in Mayhew Lake,
Minn., to John and Mary
Vanderwerf Boekhoff. As
a child, Ernest moved
with his family to Iowa
and attended Colfax-4
country school in rural
Wellsburg. Ernest served
in the United States
Army during World War
II, where he was a
prisoner of war and
earned four Bronze Star
medals, one Silver Star
for surviving five major
battles and the Purple
Heart. On Jan. 31, 1947,
he married Ruth Boelts
at the West Friesland
Presbyterian Church in
rural Ackley. They
farmed in the Wellsburg
area until 1958 when
they moved to a farm
near Aplington. In 1982,
Ernest retired and they
moved to Aplington where
he worked at O's Gold
Seed Company and enjoyed
fishing, carpentry work,
and spending time with
his family and friends.
He moved to the
Presbyterian Village in
Ackley in 1992. He was a
member of the West
Friesland Presbyterian
Church and the Aplington
AMVETS.
Ernest is survived by
two sons: Mervin and his
wife, Kathy, of Iowa
Falls, and their
children, Melissa and T.
J. and Lynn Boekhoff and
his wife, Susan, of Park
City, Kan., and his
daughter, Jamie; three
sisters; Grace Hippen
and her husband,
Delbert, of Wellsburg,
Esther Smith and her
husband, Dale, of
Conrad, and Marlys Clark
of Keokuk; two brothers,
George Boekhoff and his
wife, Betty and Arnold
Boekhoff and his wife,
Delores, all of
Wellsburg; and one
sister-in-law, Carrie
Boekhoff of Wellsburg.
He was preceded in death
by his wife, Ruth; his
parents; a sibling who
died at birth; six
brothers; and eight
sisters.
Schwartz Funeral Chapel
of Aplington was in
charge of the

ELDORA - Charles W.
Engel, 71, of Eldora,
died Saturday, July 7,
2001, at Ellsworth
Municipal Hospital in
Iowa Falls. Services
will be held Wednesday,
July 11 at 1:30 p.m. at
Creps-Abels Funeral Home
in Eldora, with burial
in the Eldora City
Cemetery. Pastor Scot
Shelburne will
officiate. Full military
honors will be provided
by the Walter-Sayer Post
No. 182 of the American
Legion and VFW Roll-Harless
Post No. 3974, Eldora.
Memorials may be
directed to the American
Cancer Society.
Charles was born May 31,
1930, in Beecher City,
Ill., to Richard and
Pauline Watson Engel. He
lived his younger years
in Beecher City and in
1950 he enlisted in the
United States Army for
two years, serving in
the Korean Conflict. In
1970, Charles moved to
Eldora and on Dec. 9,
1975, he married Carolyn
White in Rock Island,
Ill. He worked as a
carpenter and in
construction throughout
his life. He was a
former member of the
Eldora American Legion.
His hobbies were
fishing, fixing bicycles
and gardening.
He is survived by his
wife, Carolyn; three
sons, Charles Andrew
Engel and wife, Jonni,
of Eldora; Craig Gorman
and wife, Anne, of
Tallahasse, Fla., and
Kevin Gorman of
Huntsville, Ala.; three
daughters, Sara Engel of
Eldora, Donna Miller and
husband, Jon, of
Paullina, and Dawanna
Engel of Liscomb; 10
grandchildren; and a
sister, Paula Lee and
husband, John, of
Farmington, Mo. He was
preceded in death by his
parents, and two
grandchildren. |

DES MOINES - Carol V.
Cave, 76, of Des Moines,
formerly of Popejoy,
died of a heart ailment
Tuesday, July 3, 2001,
at Hospice Kavanagh
House in Des Moines.
Services were held
Saturday, July 7 at
Hamilton's Near Highland
Memory Gardens Funeral
Home with burial in the
Highland Memory Gardens
Cemetery.
Carol was born July 5,
1924, near Popejoy, to
Alvin and Anna Ellingson
Benson. She graduated
from Popejoy High School
and spent the rest of
her life in Des Moines.
She retired in 1988 as
an account clerk for
Hawkeye Security
Insurance Co. and was an
avid Chicago Bulls fan
and enjoyed watching
Tiger Woods golf.
She is survived by two
daughters, Susan Cox of
Bondurant, and Diana
Valadez of Des Moines; a
son, James, of Des
Moines; a sister, Ruby
Anderson of Dows; 10
grandchildren; and six
great-grandchildren. She
was preceded in death by
her parents; two
sisters, Eunice Bessman
and Vera Jorgenson; and
a brother, Wendell

WILLIAMS - Richard G.
Boor, 62, died Saturday,
July 7, 2001, at the
Israel Family Hospice
House in Ames. Services
were held Tuesday, July
10, at 10:30 a.m. at the
First Assembly of God
Church in Ames, with
burial at Northlawn
Memory Gardens at Iowa
Falls. Pastor Gary
Pilcher officiated.
Richard was born Dec.
22, 1938, at Iowa City,
to James Ross and
Reletta Wheeler Boor. He
grew up in Osceola and
graduated from Leon High
School and worked at
Rath Packing Plant in
Waterloo for four years.
On Nov. 5, 1960, he
married Joan Weaver. He
moved to Mesa, Ariz., in
1962 where he worked in
the banking business
until moving to Williams
in 1986. He was last
employed by Mary Greeley
Medical Center in Ames,
as assistant to the
construction managers.
He was a member of the
First Assembly of God
Church in Ames and
established the
Riverside Ministries
(Southern Gospel).
He is survived by his
wife, Joan, of Williams;
two daughters, Sandy
Boor of Sherwood, Ark.,
and Rebecca Frank of
Iowa Falls; two sons,
Aaron Boor of Jewell,
and Ben Boor of
Farmington, Minn.; 15
grandchildren ; two
brothers, Maurice Boor
of Deer River, Minn.,
and Gerald Boor of
Alden; six sisters,
Helen Meyer of Iowa
Falls, Aletha Anderson
of Williams, Norma
Alderdyce of Coulter,
Marilyn Venner of
Williams, Carolyn
Hoversten and Nancy
Barnhart, both of Iowa
Falls. He was preceded
in death by his parents,
and a brother, Bernard.
