Wanda
M. Cummings, 90, of Charles City, died Thursday morning, Sept. 2, 2010,
at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.
Funeral services for Wanda Cummings will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday at the
Trinity United Methodist Church in Charles City. Pastor Martha Bennett
of the Floyd Grace United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will
be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City.
Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 to 8
p.m. Monday and after 9 a.m. at the church on Tuesday.
Wanda Mae Kemp was born January 10, 1920, in Rudd, the daughter of
Charles and Erma (Warren) Kemp. She attended the Rudd, Floyd and Colwell
Community Schools. On June 3, 1936, Wanda was united in marriage to
Lester Cummings in Charles City. For 38 years she was a farm wife in the
Bassett area. She was a member of the Floyd Grace United Methodist
Church and several card clubs. Her interests included playing cards,
raising chickens and baking.
Living family members include her daughter, Carol (Ron) Boggess of
Floyd; 11 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; 15 great-great
grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Nona Cummings of Charles City; brother,
Jack Kemp of San Diego, Calif.; sister-in-law, Mary Manning of Charles
City; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, on July 20, 2001;
son, Ron Cummings; daughter, Marilyn Hall; son-in-law, Bill Hall; two
grandsons, Kevin Boggess and Rodney Hall; and two brothers, Lowell and
Ollen Kemp.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family.

Elmer
K. Heying, 93, of Ionia, died on Saturday, Sept. 4, 2010 at Colonial
Manor in Elma.
Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday,
Sept. 7, 2010 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, in Elma, with
Father Ray Atwood as celebrant. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery at
Elma.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 6, 2010 at Conway-Kolbet
Funeral Home in Elma with a scriptural wake service at 6 p.m. Visitation

Elmer Karl Heying was born on March 31, 1917 to Ernest and Mary (Elenz)
Heying. He attended school in Richmond, Minnesota. Elmer helped his dad
farm before entering into the United States Army on May 8, 1941. He
served in the Mediterranean Theater during WWII, receiving the Purple
Heart. Elmer received his honorable discharge on August 9, 1945. He
moved to Elma and worked as a mechanic for Gansen Auto. He later managed
Heying Skelly Service in Elma. On November 25, 1948 Elmer was united in
marriage to Bernice Boyle at Immaculate Conception Church in Elma. It
was there in Elma that the couple made their home. Following Bernice’s
death on February 10, 1958, Elmer was united in marriage to Charlotte
Brown-Beaston on July 8, 1959. In 1968 Elmer was employed with
Chamberlain Manufacturing. He then retired in 1980. Elmer enjoyed
playing cards, fishing, dancing, and spending time with his family.
Elmer is survived by his children, Marinell (Ralph) Halweg of Denver,
Sharron (Dan) Adelmund of Round Lake Beach, Illinois, Donna Jacoby (Bud
Eggleston) of Traer, Cheri (Kenny) Reich of Le Center, Minnesota, Helen
(Tom) Geerts of North Washington, Steve (Peg) Beaston of Centralia,
Missouri, Julie DiLaura of Burnsville, Minnesota, Peter (Jane) Heying of
Cedar Rapids, and Tammy (Russ) Steffen of Sumner; 26 grandchildren; 41
great-grandchildren; his brothers, Paul (Jeanne) Heying of Richmond,
Minnesota, and Ernest (Ann) Heying of Fallon, Nevada; and his sisters,
Irma Huczek of Chicago, Illinois, Gen Linhoff of Anaheim, California,
and Delores (Dick) Schloeder of Richmond, Minnesota.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Bernice (Boyle)
Heying; his second wife, Charlotte (Brown) Heying; three sons, Steven,
Karl, and Edward; three great-grandsons; five brothers; and two sisters.

Stolz 92 of New Hampton died Sunday evening, Sept. 5, 2010, at Mercy
Medical Center in New Hampton.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010, at
Trinity Lutheran Church in New Hampton with Pastor Kevin Frey
officiating. Sid Pearce will be vocalist and will be accompanied by
organist Dennis Strum.
Interment will be in the New Hampton City Cemetery. Pallbearers will be
Mike Blake, Larry Moore, Blair Blake, John Hernan, Hans Stolz, and
Herman Meyer. Honorary Pallbearers will be Dave Kraft, Kit O'Donohoe,
John Rigler, Don Shinstine, Bob Rigler, Dan Feuling, Harlan Pose, Don
Jepson, Bill Straw, and the "P.E.O. Sisters."

Dorothy Vaughan Thomas was born January 18, 1918, in Lime Springs, Iowa.
Her parents were Robert W. and Margretta Griffith Thomas. She was
educated in Lime Springs and was president of her high school class for
four years graduating in 1935. She sang in both her high school and
church choirs. She attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids for two years
and then transferred to Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls,
Iowa, graduating in 1939. She was a member of Sigma Alpha Iota National
Honorary Music Fraternity.
Dorothy then taught music and English in Fredericksburg. On June 29,
1940, she was united in marriage to Norbert Stolz of New Hampton. Three
children were born to this union: Sheila, Brad, and Sharman.
During the years of World War II, Dorothy worked on the local ration
board, was employed as a service representative for Bell Telephone in
Washington D.C., and was a secretary at the Army Recruiting Office in
Seattle, Washington. She later joined her husband in Alaska where Norb
built Army installations.
After the war, the couple returned to New Hampton. After staying home to
help raise her three children, Dorothy returned to the work force as
Assistant City Clerk. She then became a social worker for Chickasaw
County, a position she held for 16 years. Dorothy was devoted to her
faith and to her church. She served as the organist at Trinity Lutheran
Church for thirty- six years. Dorothy was a charter member of Miriam
Circle, a fifty-nine year member of the PEO sisterhood, and a fifty-five
year member of the Loafer Club. She was also a member of Schubert Club,
Investment Club, Women’s Club, NH Country Club, and the St. Josephs
Hospital Auxiliary. She served as pianist for the Rotary Club until
failing health forced her to resign.
Those left to honor her memory are her children, Brad (Carol) of
Woodinville, Washington, and Sharman (Mike) Blake of West Des Moines;
six grandchildren, Gabrielle Hernan of Boulder, Co, John (Hillary)
Hernan of Madison, WI, Hans and Emma Stolz of Woodinville, WA, Heidi
Blake of West Des Moines, and Blair Blake of Chicago, IL.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Margretta
Thomas; her sister, Florence; her husband, Norb and her daughter,
Sheila.
Dorothy will be remembered for her gift of music, her community service,
and her undying love of her children and grandchildren.

Janice Mueller 87 of Fredericksburg died Thursday morning, Sept. 2,
2010, at her home.
Funeral services will be 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2010, at the
Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Fredericksburg. Interment will be

Lavern C. Jensen 88 of Waverly died Friday, Sept. 3, 2010, at the
Waverly Health Center.

Bartels Lutheran Home Chapel. Interment will be in Sunnyside Cemetery,
rural Charles City with military rites by the Nashua VFW Post.

Lavern C. Jensen was born July 23, 1922, in Ute, the son of Chris and
Lois (Ridley) Jensen.
He graduated from high school in Ute and began working for the Security
National Bank in Sioux City. He enlisted in the US Navy on February 3,
1943, served during WWII as a navy fighter pilot. He was honorably
discharged on November 23, 1945. He then attended a business college in
Sioux City, and then went to Rutgers University in New York for his
degree.
Lavern returned to the Security National Bank and became vice president
and trust officer at the bank for forty six years retiring in 1987. On
April 5, 1957, in Sioux City, he married Margaret Graeser of Nashua. He
was active in many organizations including the Morningside Lutheran
Church, St. Luke’s Medical Center, past president of AIB, the United
Cerebral Palsy, Travelers Aid, Siouxland Estate Planning Council and
Hope Haven in Rock Valley.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Margaret; one son, Jay Jensen of
Bettendorf; one daughter Linda (Ronald) Caldwell of Denver, CO; five
grandchildren, Camie (Mark) Knollenberg, Nick Jensen, Farrah Jensen,
Shera (Dale) Barbour and Kade Jensen; four great-grandchildren, Ali
Knollenberg, Mitchell Knollenberg, Autumn Jensen and Madyson Jensen; one
nephew, Phillip Jacobson of KS.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister and brother-in-law,
Lavera and Dale Jacobson.
Eva Hauser
Eva Hauser age 91, of Hartville, Ohio, formerly of Nashua died Sunday
Sept. 5, 2010 at Heather Ridge Assisted Living Community in North
Canton, Ohio.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010 at
Calvary Baptist Church in Charles City with Pastor Tim Robbins
officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Nashua.

Eva Mae Caster was born August 9, 1919, near Nashua, the daughter of
Ross and Clara Caster. She graduated from Nashua High School. She was
united in marriage to Fred Hauser on June 25, 1939, at the Little Brown
Church. To this union three daughters were born.
Eva was an integral part of the family business, Hauser Manufacturing
Company, and she later worked for many years at Pamida in Charles City,
Iowa.
She was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church, serving as Sunday
School teacher for many years. Eva enjoyed sewing, gardening, cooking,
and was famous for her delicious pies.
She is survived by her three daughters, Mary Jane Linton of Hartville,
OH, Virginia (Rev. Walter) Glucklich of Cokato, MN, and Lydia Jean
(David) Drayer of Dana Point, CA; seven grandchildren, Daniel
(Christina) Linton, Deborah (Bob) Kanel, Nate (Jen) Glucklich, Sam
(Miriam) Glucklich, Tina Glucklich, Sarah (Matthew) Kline, and Jessica
(Kyle) deBruyn; and 10 great grandchildren; one brother, Ralph Caster of
Colorodo; one sister, Vera Bunston of Charles City; as well as other
relatives and friends.
Eva was preceded in death by her husband Fred Hauser; her parents; two
brothers, Dale and Glen Caster; one sister, Mabel Kreklau; and one great
grandson, Bradley.

Ann Carlin, 95, of Lawler, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2010 at
Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010
at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Lawler, with Father Marvin Salz as
celebrant. Lector will be Kathy Timlin. Music will be provided by Dennis
and Michelle Lau. Gift bearers will be Francis and Myrna Hentges. The
Pall will be placed by Dan and Mary Eileen Carlin. Burial will be in Our

Marcella Ann Hentges was born May 27, 1915 to Frank and Anna (Hilsman)
Hentges on the family farm near North Washington. She received her
education at St. Mary’s School in North Washington. After graduation,
Marcella was employed in the W. J. Tiernan home in New Hampton. On
October 3, 1938 Marcella was united in marriage to James J. Carlin at
St. Mary’s Church in New Hampton. The couple farmed their entire married
life on a farm west of Lawler. Two children, Daniel and Patricia, were
born to this union.
Marcella enjoyed a competitive game of cards, baking, fishing, and
especially spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was a member of the Lawler American Legion Auxiliary for 63 proud
years, and a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler.
Marcella is survived by her son, Dan (Mary Eileen) Carlin of Lawler; six
grandchildren, Susan (Wayne) Troyna, Dannette (Mike) Roethler, Jodi (DJ)
Njus, Lea (Stephen Holcomb) Carlin, Pat Carlin, and Paul Carlin; seven
great-grandchildren; and one brother, Francis (Myrna) Hentges.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, James on March 14,
1980; her parents; her daughter, Patricia Schultz; one brother, Ralph
Hentges and his wife, Shirley Hentges; one sister, Muriel Peters, and
her husband, Ike Peters.

"Bette" Marie Rochford 81 of New Hampton died Friday morning, Sept. 17,
2010, at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton.

Schmitt celebrating the Mass.

Elizabeth “Bette” Marie Rochford was born October 7, 1928, in rural
Chickasaw County, near New Hampton, the daughter of John Leo and Mary
Johanna (Brown) Meighan. She received her education in rural country
schools and was a New Hampton High School graduate.
Bette was a retired telephone operator with United Telephone for over
twenty-five years. She was an avid gardener and bird-watcher. She will
be remembered by her family as the best mother, grandmother,
great-grandmother and a wonderful friend to many.
Survivors include lifetime companion and special friend, Leonard
Peterson of New Hampton; two sons, Tom Rochford of Des Moines, Ron
Rochford of New Hampton; two daughters, Betsy Staub of Cedar Rapids,
Diana Erickson of Mankato, MN; four grandchildren, David Erickson, Dana
Erickson, Dustin Rochford and Aaron Rochford; five great-grandchildren;
one sister, Elaine (Joel) Klisert of Des Moines; two sisters-in-law;
Bonnie Meighan and Kay Meighan, both of Waterloo.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Thomas in 1957;
two brothers, Bill and Bob Meighan; five sisters, Maxine Meighan,
MaDonna Chabak, Anna Mae Meighan, Evelyn Dittmann and Margaret Meighan.
Bruce E. Popken, 70 of Elma, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2010 at his
home.

Robert A. Larsen
Funeral
Mass for Deacon Robert A. Larsen was celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on
Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2010, at St. Cecelia Catholic Church in Algona, with
the Most Reverend R. Walker Nickless officiating. Burial was in Calvary
Cemetery in Algona.
The Reverend Robert Alan Larsen was born October 17, 1943, in Clinton,
the son of Melvin and Bernadine (McMahon) Larsen. He grew up and
attended school in DeWitt graduating from DeWitt Central High School in
1962. After his schooling he went on to attend St. Ambrose University in
Davenport.
On August 21, 1965, Bob was united in marriage to Lorri Moffatt at St.
Paul the Apostle Church in Davenport. After their marriage they lived in
Davenport while Bob was finishing college. He graduated from St. Ambrose
University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1968.
Bob began his 42 year teaching and coaching career at Mater Dei High
School in Breese, IL, then to Williamsburg for seven years before going
to Mater Dei High School in Clinton. He then moved on to Davenport
Assumption, Carroll Kuemper, Iowa City Regina, Cornell College for a
year before settling at Bishop Garrigan High School in Algona the past
12 years. He loved to be around the kids, not only on the playing
fields, but in the classroom.
Reverend Mr. Robert Larsen was ordained into the Permanent Diaconate on
June 2, 1984, at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Davenport by Bishop Gerald
O’Keefe. The same time he was studying for the Diaconate he also
achieved his Masters Degree in Athletic Administration from the
University of Iowa. His diaconate life and the church, were as big a
part of who he was, as the teaching and coaching.
Bob loved spending time with his grandchildren, football, fishing,
working on his new home in Arnolds Park, spending time on the boat,
doing yard work and listening to music. He was a member of St. Cecelia
Parish and the Algona Knights of Columbus Council #952 and the Fourth
Degree Monsignor P.P. Gearen Assembly #2610.
Bob died Friday, September 24, 2010, at the Kossuth Regional Health
Center in Algona. He was 66.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 45 years, Lorri Larsen of
Arnolds Park; children, Shari and husband Mark Kuehl of Lena, IL; Shawn
Larsen of Minneapolis, MN; Sarah and husband John Gorman of New Hampton;
Scott Larsen and wife Ellie of Algona; seven grandchildren, KayLee, Ian,
Elizabeth, Lily, Luke, Tristin and Devin. He is also survived by
brothers and sisters, Harold Larsen of Oceanside, CA, Mel Jr. and Liz
Larsen of Birmingham, MI; Margaret and Tom Grace of Wheaton, IL; Jeannie
and Tom Dean of DeWitt and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
