Frances D. Scoles

Frances D. Scoles, 79 of Charles City, formerly of Nashua, died Sunday August 1, 2010 at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City surrounded by her family.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday August 4, 2010 at St. John Lutheran Church in Nashua with Pastor Tom Hagen officiating. Organist for the service will be Lisa Weibke with Chris Cleveland singing “In The Garden,” “Just a Closer Walk with Thee,” and “Amazing Grace” by the congregation.

Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Nashua, with Matt Dutka, Devon Dutka, Bill Wadey, Jr., Luke Wadey, Cody Winters, Jim Wolfe, Aaron Hauser, and Paul Larson serving as pallbearers.

Friends may call 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 3, 2010 at the Hugeback and Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua. Visitation will continue an hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.

Frances Darlene was born July 20, 1931, the daughter of Irving and Bertha (Wendt) Nehls. She received her education in Charles City, and later became a certified nurses aide.

On January 5, 1949, Frances was united in marriage to Richard Scoles at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. To this union, five children were born. The couple lived in Charles City before moving to Nashua. Frances was active with the St. John Lutheran Church women and was a member of OPTA. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, crafts, cooking, camping and fishing. Frances enjoyed getting together with family, where there was almost always a card game. Her grandkids will remember her for their regular trips to the river in Charles City to feed the ducks.

Frances is survived by two sons, Thomas (Julie) Scoles of Nashua, and Richard Scoles of Nashua; three daughters, Margie Dutka of Fredericksburg, Debra Tonn of Nashua, and Jackie (Bill) Wadey of Greene; two sisters, Jean Moore of California, and Carol Downing of Charles City; 13 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; Husband, Richard in 2006; two brothers, George Nehls, and Robert Nehls; a grandson in infancy, Brett Scoles; and a son-in-law, Michael Tonn.


Bernice Emma Ameling

Bernice Emma Ameling, 93, died Thursday, July 29, 2010 at Mercy Medical Center, New Hampton.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held 10:30 a.m. Monday August 2, 2010 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Waucoma, Iowa. Interment was in St. May's Cemetery.

Bernice Emma (Ehlert) Ameling, daughter of William and Emma (Popenhagen) Ehlert, was born July 21, 1917 on a farm near Sumner, Iowa.

On April 17, 1940 Bernice was united in marriage with Joseph Ameling at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sumner, Iowa and they were blessed with three children. Joe and Bernice milked cows, raised crops, chickens and pigs for over 40 years on their farm near Waucoma. She enjoyed teaching Sunday school, being a 4-H leader, gardening, flowers, birds, playing any type of cards and was a member of Catholic Daughters of America. Bernice also sought out any child in need of her arms for holding.

Bernice’s death occurred on July 29, 2010 at the Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton at the age of 93 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe in 1991; her parents and her only sister, Pauline Eckenrod.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children and their spouses, Bill and Carol of Fredericksburg, Lauren and Mary Kay of Waucoma and Jolene and David Ott of Cedar Rapids; fourteen grandchildren; twenty-seven great-grandchildren; ten great great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.


Donald Lee Triplett

Donald Lee Triplett, age 90 of Fredericksburg, died Monday, August 2, 2010, at the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Funeral services will be Thursday August 5, 2010, at the United Methodist Church in Fredericksburg with Pastor Shirley Will officiating.

Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Fredericksburg with military rites conducted by the Fredericksburg Amvets. Serving as pallbearers are Shane Shekleton, Kr. Harold Nordaas, Tyler Hanawalt, Lynn Telleen, Pat Ryan and Tracy Hanson. Honorary pallbearers are Roy Speicher and Bob Davis.

Visitation will be 4 - 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Fredericksburg. Further visitation will be one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the church.

Donald Lee Triplett was born in New Hampton on June 7, 1920, the son of James and Mae (Brown) Triplett. Don was in the 4-H Club for 8 years showing calves and colts at Dairy Days and at fairs. He graduated from the Fredericksburg High School in 1937. He married Melba Maxine Bennett and to this union a son, Larry was born. The couple later divorced. Don entered the United States Navy on September 2, 1942, serving during World War II aboard the USS Alcyone and the USS Fred T. Berry. He was honorably discharged on October 24, 1945.

Don had worked for L.L. Upham Trucking in Fredericksburg. He married Dorothy Becker in 1953. He worked as a fireman for the City of Waverly and the couple later moved to Roseville, IL, where he worked for the Bruce Motor Freight Company for 21 years and was also District Fire Marshall retiring to Fredericksburg in 1983. He had served on the Fredericksburg City Council for 12 years was a member of the Amvets and the United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a step-son Charles (Bonnie) Becker of Macomb, IL; a step-grandson, Brad (Jamie) Becker of Macomb, IL; one step-great-granddaughter, Carly Jo Becker; dear friends, Brad and Cindy Messsersmith of New Hampton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy; son, Larry Triplett; one brother, Truman Robert Triplett; a step-grandson, Darby Becker.


Paul M. Larsen

Paul M. Larsen, 84, of Cedar Falls died Tuesday, August 3, 2010 at his home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick Catholic Church, with inurnment in Greenwood Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Richardson Funeral Home, where there will be a 7 p.m. Vigil service.

He was born September 7, 1925 in Kesley, the son of MarinusE. and A. Kristine (Anderson) Larsen. He married Arlene “Tiger” Larsen on February 3, 1951 in Waterloo. She died February 19, 2003.

Mr. Larsen was an Organizer and Field Representative for AFL-CIO, former Executive Secretary of the Black Hawk Union Council AFL-CIO, and sixty-three year member of United Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters AFL-CIO, retiring in 1987.

Survivors include three sons, John (Linda) and Kermit (Debra) of Cedar Falls, and Martin (Deb) of New Hampton; a daughter, Kris Larsen of Chicago, IL; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by his parents; wife; two brothers, Gilbert and Harold Larsen; and a sister, Katherine Uhlenhopp.

John Joseph Meyer Jr.

John Joseph Meyer Jr., 65 of New Hampton, died Tuesday, August 3, 2010, at his home.

A service celebrating the life of John will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 6, 2010, at Trinity Lutheran Church, New Hampton with Pastor Kevin Frey officiating.

Inurnment will be held in the New Hampton Cemetery with military rites conducted by the New Hampton American Legion and VFW Posts and the Iowa Military Funeral Honors Unit.

Friends may greet the family 4:00 -8:00 p.m. Thursday at Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in New Hampton. Visitation will continue an hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.

John Joseph Meyer was born June 24, 1945, in Charles City, Iowa the son of John Joseph and Hazel (Stillions) Meyer Sr. He received his education in Charles City graduating high school in 1963. He was inducted into the United States Army on October 11, 1965, serving in Vietnam and was honorably discharged on August 17, 1968. On August 21, 1982, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua he married Kristin Gilbert of New Hampton. To this union two daughters were born. John attended NIACC in Mason City studying electronics and refrigeration and in late 1971 began working at Sara Lee in New Hampton until the plant closing in 2000. John then worked for Con-Agra in Fredericksburg, College Square Mall in Cedar Falls, and the last seven years working for John Deere in Waterloo.

In his free time he enjoyed fixing everything he could get his hands on, fishing, hunting, his gun collection, trips to the casino, the western channel and most importantly, time with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Kris; two daughters, Rachel (Matt) Ysbrand of New Hampton, and Jennifer Meyer of Waterloo; three sisters, Dolores ( Rev. Lewis) Moon of Rochford, IL, Bonnie Holtz of Charles City and Lois Meyer of Floyd.

Mary Elizabeth MacKay Donovan

Mary Elizabeth MacKay Donovan, known for her gracious warmth and friendliness, died Aug. 11, 2010, at New Hampton Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

Memorial services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 16, 2010, at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in New Hampton with Pastor Laura Hucke of the Congregational United Church of Christ officiating. Inurnment will be in Calvary Cemetery, New Hampton.

Mrs. Donovan was born July 29, 1918, in Sioux City, Iowa, the daughter of Jesse MacKay and Hazel MacLarty McGillivray MacKay. She was raised in Madison, S.D., where she enjoyed swimming in two nearby lakes and the love and attention she received as the only child in three close knit families. She received her associates degree from what is now Dakota State University then went on to graduate from the University of Iowa, where she met Dano Donovan.

During World War II while Dano served with the U.S. Army in North Africa and England, Mary Beth taught in Hampton and Grundy Center, Iowa. The couple married Sept. 20, 1945, and made New Hampton their home.

She was an avid reader until macular degeneration took her vision and loved music and dancing. Her main interests included anthropology, world affairs, politics on all levels and her grandchildren.

Her activities in New Hampton included substitute teaching and serving on the Chickasaw County Board of Supervisors. She also was a Girl Scout leader and taught Sunday School at The Congregational United Church of Christ, where she was a member the entire time she lived in the city. She was a 70-year member of P.E.O. and for more than 50 years belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary. Charities she supported included St. Joseph’s Indian Orphanage in Chamberlain, S.D.

Her daughters cherish the terrific parenting and love of Mary Beth and Dano.

Survivors include four daughters, Deborah Donovan (James Kane) of Oak Park, IL.; Christine (David) Stolz of Nashua; Norah (Kevin) Kennedy of New Hampton; and Elizabeth (Craig) Ebert of Sisseton, S.D.; 11 grandchildren; one great granddaughter; nephews Mark (Cristin) Donovan of New Hampton, and John (Sharon) Donovan of Cascade; and Puddy.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; brother William MacKay, who died in infancy; and beloved aunts and uncles: Murdock and Ernest McDonald and Emma and Donald McGillivray.


Lois A. Glaser

Lois A. Glaser, 80, of Alta Vista, died Saturday, August 14, 2010 at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton.

Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30am on Wednesday August 18, 2010 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Alta Vista, Iowa with Msgr. John Hemann celebrating. Burial will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Alta Vista with Mike Baltierra, Jeff Baltierra, David, Baltierra, Robert Jordan, Robert Zeien, Phil Glaser, Dale Glaser, and Henry Gorman serving as casket bearers.

Visitation will be Tuesday, August 17, 2010 from 3:00-8:00pm at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in Elma, Iowa. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the mass on Wednesday. Condolences for Lois’s family may be left at www.conway-kolbetfuneralhome.com.

Lois Ann Zeien was born on July 30, 1930 to Jacob and Ruth (Vala) Zeien in Alta Vista, Iowa. She attended and graduated from St. William’s School in Alta Vista in 1948. After graduation, Lois worked at the New Hampton Hospital for four years. She was united in marriage to Vincent Glaser on February 1, 1956 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Alta Vista. The couple farmed near Ionia, Iowa and later moved to the Chickasaw County Home where Vinny farmed and Lois cooked for four years. They moved to their present farm near Alta Vista in 1966. Lois and Vinny were united as one for 54 years.

Lois enjoyed dancing the Polka and Waltz, visiting family and friends, traveling across the country, gardening, and baking cookies with her granddaughter, Bethany. She was a member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Alta Vista, and St. Bernard’s Rosary Society.

Lois is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, Vincent “Vinny” Glaser; their son, Keith “Hammer” (Suezen) Glaser, of Alta Vista; one granddaughter, Bethany Glaser, of Alta Vista; three brothers, Raymond (Peggy) Zeien, of Dysart, Iowa, Norbert (Marvel) Zeien, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Norman (Judy) Zeien, of New Hampton; one sister, Rose Baltierra, of Stockton, Illinois; sister-in-law, Kathy Zeien, of Fon Du Lac, Wisconsin; several sisters and brothers-in-law; numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Dean Glaser; brothers, Clement, and Dale Zeien; one grandson, Michael Glaser; and one brother-in-law, John Baltierra.


Hubert “Hoop” F. Burgart

Hubert “Hoop” F. Burgart, age 94, of Ionia, died Monday August 16, 2010 at home surrounded by his family.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11a.m. on Friday August 20, 2010 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Ionia, Iowa with Fr. Mark Osterhaus celebrating. Burial will be at St. Boniface Cemetery in Ionia with Hoop’s grandchildren serving as active casket bearers. Honorary casket bearers will be Mose Finnegan, Lloyd Robbins, Bill Duncan, Bill Siglin, Gary Wegner, Bill Zwanziger, Arnie Boge, Louie Link, Timmy Burgart, Jerry Meyers, and his morning card playing group.

Visitation will be 3-8 p.m. on Thursday August 19, 2010, with a scriptural wake service at 7:30pm at Ionia Funeral Home in Ionia, Iowa. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the service on Friday. Condolences for Hoop’s family may be left at www.conway-kolbetfuneralhome.com.

“Hoop” Burgart was born on August 3, 1916 to Frank and Bertha (Testroet) Burgart on the family farm near New Hampton. Hoop attended school in Ionia, Clarksville, and Shell Rock. He was employed at various jobs in the area. On January 16, 1939 Hoop was united in marriage to Frances Meyers at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Ionia. That year he purchased the DX Station in Ionia which he operated until 1947. Hoop then partnered with Al Forkenbrock to purchase the hardware store in Ionia. It later became Burgart Hardware. Hoop operated the hardware store until his retirement in 1981. He enjoyed softball, bowling, playing cards, fishing, dancing, gardening, and especially spending time with his family. Hoop was also an accomplished fiddle player. He served as Ionia mayor, fire chief, and was very active in his community. Hoop was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, and the Charles City Moose Lodge.

Hoop is survived by his children, Barbara Havlik of New Hampton, Joan (John) Hill of Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina, Mary Hoeft of Charles City, Iowa, Richard (Suzanne) Burgart of Litchfield, Minnesota, Elaine (Tom) Keating of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Tom (Dorann) Burgart of New Hampton, Dan (Jennifer) Burgart of Lawrenceville, Georgia; 23 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; one sister, Sally Gehrke of Charles City, IA; and special friend, Ella Mae Dvorak of Ionia.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Frances in 1995; two sons-in-law, Jim Havlik, and David Hoeft; three granddaughters, Cathy Gebel, Diane Arens, and Laura Rawlings; two brothers Cletus, and Joe Burgart; and one sister, Leona Hardin.


Mary Annee Stanley

Mary Annee Stanley age 94 of Nashua died Monday, August 16, 2010, at the Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, August 19, 2010, at the United Methodist Church in Nashua. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Luella Gitch

Luella Gitch, 95, of Fredericksburg died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2010, at the New Hampton Care Center.

Funeral services are 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 21, 2010, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Fredericksburg with Pastor Ronnie Koch officiating. Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery with Dan Ellsworth, Darrell Ellsworth, Dale Ellsworth, Greg Gitch, Jeff Gitch, Tim Gitch, Aaron O’Day, Denny Degner and Daryl Degner serving as pallbearers.

Friends may call 9 - 11 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Luella was born June 20, 1915, in rural Chickasaw County near Williamstown, IA, the daughter of William and Pauline (Paulsen) Degner. She received her education in rural country school and later was then a housekeeper for Fredericksburg area families. On March 30, 1936, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Fredericksburg she married Paul W. Gitch. To this union two children were born. The couple farmed together in the Fredericksburg area until retirement. Paul died on June 14 , 2003 at the age of 92. Following the death of her husband, she became a resident of the New Hampton Care Center.

Luella was legally blind the majority of her life yet she never let this affect all the things she enjoyed. She loved gardening, playing cards, attending church functions and time with her family. While at the New Hampton Care Center, she enjoyed her visits with Pastor Koch as well as her family and other relatives. Luella took an active role as a resident and was involved in many of the social activities at the care center.

Survivors include one son, Don (Delores) Gitch of New Hampton; one daughter, Karen Ellsworth of New Hampton, ten grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson; one brother, Harold (Delores) Degner of Des Moines; one sister, Lurline O’Day ofJacksonville, FL.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and three sisters, Evelyn Hunt, Ruth Gruenberg and Gertrude Mikes.


Adella Catherine Tieskotter

Adella Catherine Tieskotter, 87 of Waterloo, formerly of Lawler died Sunday, Aug. 22, 2010, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 27, 2010, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church with Rev. Nick March officiating. Interment will be Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Cemetery.

Friends may call 3 - 8 p.m. Thursday August 26, 2010, at the Hugeback and Chenoweth Funeral Home in New Hampton where there will be a 4 p.m. rosary by the Catholic Daughters of America and a 7 p.m. scripture service. Visitation will continue an hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.

Adella Catherine was born September 3, 1922, in St. Lucas, the daughter of Hubert and Frances (Rasing) Tillman. She received her education at St. Lukes School in St. Lucas. Adella then moved to Watertown, WI where she worked as a nurses aid at the hospital.

On January 20, 1944, she was united in marriage to Wilfred Tieskotter. To this union, seven children were born. Adella worked as a cashier in a five and dime store in Jackson, MS, and later moved back to Iowa, where she worked at Rath Packing in Waterloo and on the farm in rural Lawler. In 1980, the couple bought a home in Lawler. In 2005, Adella moved to the assisted living, then into the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Recently, she moved to Ravenwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Waterloo.

Her interests included making homemade bread, baking ginger cookies, flowers, crafts, playing cards, doing word search puzzles, and watching the EWTN channel. Adella also liked to travel, and visited Lourdes and Fatima in Europe with her sister. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, Rosary Society, Senior Citizens, and American Legion Auxiliary all in Lawler.

Adella is survived by two sons, John (Carmelita) Tieskotter of Conway, MO, Don (Sharon) Tieskotter of Charles City; five daughters, Rita Gullord of Waterloo, Norma (Louis) Hawkins of Lawler, Edna Stiefel of New Hampton, Donna (Tom) Vollenweider of Waterloo, and Diane (Dan) Gardner of Elma; 20 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; two sisters, Bernadine Tieskotter of Lawler and Jovina (Robert) Lechtenberg of Lawler.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilfred in 1989; her parents; two sons-in-law, Lee Stiefel and Dale Gullord; two sisters, Regina Tieskotter and Lucille Lechtenberg; and one brother Leonard Tillman.


Dorothy J. Pitz

Dorothy J. Pitz, 84 of New Hampton died Thursday, Aug. 26, 2010, at the New Hampton Care Center. Funeral arrangements are pending with Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in New Hampton.

Jean Swinton Smart, 67 of Bethesda, MD, formerly of Nashua, died Saturday Aug. 21, 2010, at her home.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday Aug. 30, 2010 in Greenwood Cemetery, Nashua.
