Jerome “Jerry” Schwickerath dies at 95

Jerome “Jerry” Schwickerath was gently freed from his body in his sleep on Friday Dec. 7, 2012. 

He was 95 years old and predeceased by his wife of 64 years. Jerry married Marilyn “Mel” Reinwald after moving from his family’s Iowa farm to Los Angeles in 1947. They raised seven children; Dean, Lynn (O’Neill), Greg, Gail (Garcia), Jane Jeff and Beth (Tirado). He leaves behind 11 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, 27 nieces and nephews, and extended family.
 
Jerry was a gentle soul who shared his love of nature, hiking, exploring, camping, and traveling with his family to his roots, Iowa. He worked for the Southern California Gas Company for 33 years, retiring in 1982. As a 17 year stroke survivor, he courageously faced every day with a smiling spirit. He was a wonderful father, grandfather, uncle and mentor.
 
Jerry was the last of 10 children of Henry and Christina Schwickerath, of New Hampton to leave this world.
 
Masses will be said at St. Ignatius of Loyola Church, his Los Angeles parish; and St. Boniface Church, Ionia, his childhood parish. A memorial service will be held in the spring.
 
Deep appreciation from his children to his caregivers, relatives, and friends, who brought him joy through the years.

Donis Whalen, dies at 62

Donis Whalen, age 62, of Decorah, died on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013, at the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah.

Donis Lee Whalen was born on Jan. 19, 1950, the daughter of Donald and Margaret (Jerdee) Whalen in New Hampton.  Donis was baptized at St. Olaf Lutheran Church and confirmed at the Trinity Lutheran Church in New Hampton.  Donis graduated from New Hampton High School in 1968, Luther College in Decorah in 1972, with a degree in Sociology and Business Administration.  She then went to work at the Smith Memorial Hospital in Decorah, which later became the Winneshiek Medical Center, retiring five years ago.  She returned to Luther College ten years ago to obtain her Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work.  Donis loved to play cards with her card club gals, watch television, play on her computer, drive her jeep, go hiking, biking, cross country skiing, white water rafting and to play her guitar.  She also enjoyed entertaining, especially during the Nordic Fest. Donis was also so proud of living in Decorah and was so glad to show friends and relatives the eagle nest, parks and area highlights. Above all she loved her family and friends the most.  Donis was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Decorah, where she served on the church council. She also served as a Board Member for Thrivent and Opportunity Homes and was a member of the Winneshiek Medical Center Ladies Auxiliary.  Donis also served as a representative from northeast Iowa in Social Work for the Iowa Hospital Association.    

Donis is survived by her mother: Margaret Whalen, New Hampton.  One brother: Michael (Susan) Whalen, East Bethel, Minn.  One sister: Shelley (Steven) McShane, New Hampton.  Special Friend: Sally Bachman, Albia.  Seven nieces and nephews: Amber (Raylin) Nevland, Kimberly (friend, Aaron Guck) Whalen, Ryan Whalen, Tony McShane, Nicole (Justin) Klunder, Rebecca (Trent) Zabel, and Andrea (Roberto) Barron. Ten great nieces and nephews: Ashyln Nevland, Ashton, Braden & Brooklyn McShane, Reed & Finnley Klunder, Abigail & Paige Zabel, Isabella & Gavyn Barron. 

Donis was preceded in death by her father: Donald Whalen in 2006.  One niece: April Whalen in 1980.  Her grandparents: Jacob & Marjit Jerdee and Leland & Maxine Whalen. 


Joann Partelow dies at 81

, age 81 of Tuckerton, NJ, formerly of Elma, died on Monday, Jan 7, 2013 at Colonial Manor in Elma.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013 at Conway-Markham Funeral Chapel in Elma with Pastor Dan Christensen officiating.  Burial will be held at Howard Cemetery in Elma with Michael Murray, Kristopher Murray, Ryan Dybevik, Jeff Schwake, Darren Streich, Darwin Streich, Joel Schwake and Jody Schwake serving as casketbearers.

Visitation will be held from 12 - 1 p.m.on Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013 at Conway-Markham Funeral Home in Elma.  Memorials may be directed to the Elma Public Library.  Online condolences for JoAnn’s family may be left at www.conway-markhamfh.com.

JoAnn Marie Dybevik was born on August 6, 1931 to John and Anna (Beaston) Dybevik near Elma.  JoAnn graduated from Elma High School in 1950.  She was united in marriage to Henry Spaulding on August 27, 1950 at Saude Lutheran Church near Jerrico.  The couple made their home in Southhampton, PA and to this union three children were born.  Later, the couple divorced, JoAnn moved to Surf City, NJ and married Warren Partelow in September of 1970.  JoAnn worked as a waitress at Wida’s until the age of 74 when the restaurant was sold.  She continued to live in New Jersey until she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and was moved back to Iowa to be close to her family.  JoAnn enjoyed reading, people, frogs, crossword puzzles, sewing, family and thoroughly enjoyed life to its fullest.

JoAnn’s family would like to thank Patty Elwood and Colonial Manor for their kindness and understanding care of JoAnn.

JoAnn is survived by her children, Janet Spaulding of Newnan, Ga, Bruce (Karen) Spaulding of Rochester, Minn; step-daughter, Cindy (Warren) Brown of Bellmawr, Nj; grandchildren, Michael Murray of Dothan, AL, Rebecca Barden of Newnan, Ga, Matthew (Kim) Murray of Carneys Point, Nj, Kristopher Murray of Jackson, MS, Brittany Spaulding of Warminster, PA, Jade Spaulding of Rochester, Minn; great-grandchildren, Michael and Logan Murray, Jersey Shelton and Mason Barden; her siblings, Donald (Jackie) Dybevik of Elma, Carol Schwake of Elma, Karen Streich of Charles City, IA and Daryl (Janice) Dybevik of Cresco and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Warren Partelow; her son, Scott Spaulding and two brothers, Oliver and Gayle Dybevik.


Msgr. Francis D. Heimerman dies at 93

Msgr. Francis D. Heimerman, age 93 of Nashua, died Saturday evening, Jan. 5, 2013, at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013, at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Nashua, with Rev. Monsignor Lyle L. Wilgenbusch celebrating the Mass. Homilist will be Rev. Monsignor John W. Hemann. Interment will be in Visitation Cemetery, Stacyville.
Friends may greet the family 3 - 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Nashua, where there will be a 3 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. parish scripture service. Visitation continues beginning at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the church.

Rev. Francis DeSales Heimerman was born September 1, 1919, in Haverhill, the son of Anton and Magdalen (Ginsterblum) Heimerman. At an early age, the Heimerman family moved to Stacyville. He received his education at Visitation Grade School and Visitation High School graduating in 1935 at the age of 16. He then graduated from Loras College, Dubuque, and St. Paul Seminary, St. Paul, MN. He was ordained on April 29, 1944 and had his first Mass at his home parish in Stacyville. Father’s first assignment after ordination was as an associate at St. Raphael Cathedral, Dubuque from 1944-1949 and was then an associate at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City until 1956. He then served both St. Joseph Catholic Churches in State Center and Rhodes. In 1966 he was assigned as pastor at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, Alta Vista until 1973. From 1973 until 1982 he served as pastor at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Luxemburg, IA. His final pastorate was at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Nashua from 1982 until retiring in 1991. Following his retirement, Father continued to serve his church part-time in the area. He continued to be active in the community enjoying golfing, walks and visits with friends.
Survivors include two sisters, Mary Rose Laliberte of Fargo, ND, Ruth (Byron) Spear of Albert Lea, MN; two brothers, Wilbur Heimerman of Sioux Falls, SD, Quentin (Sally) Heimerman of Stillwater, Minn; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Matthew Heimerman and one sister, Rita Alley.

Francis W. Drewelow dies at 90

Francis W. Drewelow, age 90, of New Hampton, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013 at New Hampton Nursing and Rehab.  Francis was the last of 11 children to reach the gates of Heaven.

Funeral services for Francis will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Monday, Jan. 14, 2013 at Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastor Kevin Frey officiating.  Burial will be held at New Hampton Cemetery in New Hampton.

Visitation will be from 3 - 7 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013 at Conway-Markham Funeral Home in New Hampton and will continue at the church one hour prior to the service on Monday.  Memorials may be directed to the family.  Online condolences for Francis’s family may be left at www.conway-markhamfh.com.

Francis William Paul Drewelow was born on July 1, 1922, the son of Herman and Elizabeth (Linneman) Drewelow in New Hampton.  He grew up in Boyd.  Francis completed the 8th grade at a country school in Boyd.  After completing his education, Francis farmed with his father on the family farm.  On July 18, 1946, Francis was united in marriage to Beverly Watts at St. Boniface Church in Ionia.  The couple farmed east of New Hampton for many years.  Francis also worked 44 years at John Deere, retiring in 1979.  In 1990, they left their family farm and moved to New Hampton.  They were members of Trinity Lutheran Church.  Francis enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, playing cards, dancing, gardening and planting flowers.

Francis is survived by his children, five daughters, Shirley (Ron) Roethler of Charles City, Karen (Rod) Peine-Kane of Oelwein, Rita (Darwin) Fisher of New Hampton, Peggy (special friend, Duane) Drewelow of Waverly and Barbara (Andrew) Kottke of Fredericksburg; two sons, David Dean (special friend, Linda) Drewelow and Vern (Rachel) Drewelow both of New Hampton;  19 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Leo (Angie) Watts of Deming, NM, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Beverly on May 27, 2007; his parents; one son-in-law, Daniel Peine; one step-grandchild, Christian Roethler; three brothers, Oliver, Robert and Lyle; seven sisters, Bernice Ochala, Eileen Bernard, Leanor Schuchhardt, Gladys Natvig, Rose Stevenson, Isabell Brookins and Ruth Weeks.

Judith Langdon dies at 66

Judith Langdon, age 66, of Fredericksburg, died Monday evening, Jan. 7, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center in Mason City. 

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, at the Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home in Fredericksburg with Pastor Joel De Boer officiating. Private family interment will be in the New Hampton City Cemetery.

Judith Ann Langdon was born September 6, 1946, in New Hampton, the daughter of Stanley and Mabel (Zipse) Douglas. Judith began her education in a rural county school. She also went to the New Hampton Community Schools and graduated from the New Hampton High School in 1965. Judith was a longtime Nursing Assistant in several area nursing homes in New Hampton and Tripoli.  

On September 24, 1984, in Smithland, KY, she married William Langdon. Judith gave her life to the Lord in 1984 and has been her children’s greatest support. She will be remembered by her family as a very devoted and caring mother. 

Survivors include her husband, William Langdon of Fredericksburg; one daughter, Kim Widener of Oklahoma City, OK; one son, Gary Flora of McAlister, OK; several step-children; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; many step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren; four brothers, Gary (Mary Jane) Douglas of New Hampton, Ken (Jeannie) Douglas of New Hampton, Mike Wilson of Waverly, and Dale (Karen) Douglas of Britt; three sisters, Lorna Eaton of Waterloo, Shirley (Lyle) Mohlis of Sumner and Barb Douglas of Nashua. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Mary Jo Rings.


Virginia Kingfield dies at 86

Virginia Kingfield age 86 of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Ionia, died Thursday Jan. 10, 2012, at the New Hampton Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. 

A Memorial Mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Ionia with Rev. Mark Osterhaus celebrating the Mass. Inurnment will be held at St. Boniface cemetery, Ionia. The urn bearer will be Scott Koenigsfeld. Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home, New Hampton is in charge of arrangements.  641-394-4334  

Virginia Mary Kingfield was born May 19, 1926 on the family farm west of Ionia, the daughter of Charles and Clara (Klassen) Koenigsfeld. Even though her parents spelled their name, Koenigsfeld, her sir name was changed at the time of her birth to Kingfield as was the custom at the time. She received her education at St. Boniface Catholic Schools and graduated High School in 1944. Shortly after graduation Virginia left Ionia and found work in Washington D.C. as a secretary for the FBI. After three years she moved to Cedar Rapids, and worked as a secretary first for National Oats and then Virginia took a new position for the marketing and research company Frank Magid & Associates. 

Virginia loved to travel and visited many places in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Throughout her travels she attended three different World’s Fairs. She was a very independent woman that was always on the go looking for the next adventure. Virginia enjoyed getting dressed up and going out for nice dinners.  

Survivors include one brother, Clark (Kay) Koenigsfeld of Ionia; one sister-in-law, Beverly Koenigsfeld of Charles City, along with several nieces and nephews.  

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Arthur and Charles Koenigsfeld; two sisters, Marina Smith, and Dolores LaRose.


Rosella T. Kramer dies at 85

Rosella T. Kramer, age 85, of New Hampton, passed away on Jan. 13, 2013 at New Hampton Nursing and Rehab Center.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Rosella will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013 at Holy Family Parish – St. Joseph’s Center in New Hampton with Father Mark Osterhaus celebrating.  Burial will be held at St. Mary’s Cemetery in New Hampton.

Rosella Theresa Adams was born on October 4, 1927 to Stephen and Agnes (Roths) Adams in North Washington. Rosie attended and graduated from Immaculate Conception School in North Washington.  She then was employed as a waitress at Kusack’s Cafe and Holly’s Cafe.  On June 17, 1947, Rosie was united in marriage to James Kramer at Immaculate Conception Church in North Washington.  The couple made their home in New Hampton and Ionia.  In later life Rosie and Jim worked side by side operating Rosie’s Lawn Ornaments.  She was a member of Holy Family Parish - St. Mary’s Center.  Rosie enjoyed coffee with her friends, occasional bus trips to a Casino and her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Rosie’s survivors include her children, Pat (Terry) Weigel of New Hampton, Connie (Kenny) Seery of New Hampton, Vonnie (Terry) Shannon of New Hampton, Jerry (Connie) Kramer of Cedar Rapids and Rick (Donna) Kramer of New Hampton; her sisters, 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; her sisters, Kathleen Whiteman of Evansdale, IA, Lorraine “Duffy” Collins of New Hampton, Phyllis (Bob) Krause of New Hampton, Mary (Bill) Buchholtz of Alta Vista; her brother, Pete (Thelma) Adams of Ionia and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband James in 2003; her sister Rita Rausch; and one brother, Stephen “Boobie” Adams.


Phyllis M. Jaschen dies at 84

Phyllis M. Jaschen, 84, of Frederika, died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013, at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly.

Phyllis was born July 31, 1928, in Sumner, the daughter of Gerhart Schlatter and Hattie Hochberger Schlatter Nolte. She was baptized September 1, 1928 and confirmed March 29, 1942, at the Lutheran Church in rural Richfield. She graduated from Sumner High School in 1946. On March 29, 1948, she was united in marriage to Arnold Jaschen at St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner. She worked as a bookkeeper at the Frederika Feed Mill for 11 years and at Niemann Construction Quarry for 8 years.

She was a longtime member of St John Lutheran Church in Frederika. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, and quilting. She spent many hours as a hospice volunteer and was known to always put the needs of others ahead of her own. She cherished the time spent with her family.

She is survived by two sons: Dave (Sandy) Jaschen of New Hampton, and Jerry (Eileen) Jaschen of Dallas Center, one daughter:  Darla Dwyer of Parker, Colorado, six grandchildren: Kelly (Steve) Jacobson, Clint (Cynthia) Jaschen, Sarah Widmer, Brian (Becca) Jaschen, Kristin Dwyer, Rachel (Steve Ashley) Dwyer; nine great grandchildren: Dalton and Levi Jacobson, Jordan and Madison Widmer, Nikita, Taryn and Connor Jaschen, Meliah Jaschen, Maliek Dwyer.  She is preceded in death by her husband Arnold, parents, step father Bernard Nolte, brother: Willis Schlatter and a sister: Lorraine Rieck.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2013, at St. John Lutheran Church in Frederika with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly and for an hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday. Eleanor Grace (Ryder) Diesburg dies at 73

Eleanor Grace (Ryder) Diesburg 73, of Murfreesboro, Tenn. Formerly of New Hampton, passed away Thursday, Jan. 10, 2012.

Eleanor was the daughter of the late Milo (Mike) and Frances (Fran) Kayser Ryder. She was preceded in death by 2 infant sons, her parents, and a sister, Carole (Ryder) McGrath. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Kenneth Diesburg, of Murfreesboro; two sons, Kevin Diesburg and Bob (Ann) Diesburg, both of Paxton, Ill; 11 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren and a sister, Shirley beck of New Hampton.  

Eleanor was a member of St. Luke Catholic Church, the Tennessee Walkers Square Dance Club, and St. Clair Center Yoga Class.

Visitation was held from 2 to 8 p.m. with rosary at 7 p.m. Jan. 14 at Woodfin Funeral Chapel, Murfreesboro, Tenn. Funeral mass was 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, at St. Luke Catholic Church in Smyrna, Tenn. with Father Tien Thang Tran officiating. Family and friends served as pallbearers. Graveside services were held on Thursday, Jan. 17 at Glen Cemetery in Paxton, Ill where Ken and Eleanor resided before moving to Murfreesboro.

Memorials may be made to the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America, 335 Lexington Avenue, 15th floor, New York, New York, 10017 in memory of Mrs. Eleanor Diesburg.

Margaret “Peggy” Beecher dies at 90

Margaret “Peggy” Beecher, age 90, of Elma, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013 at Colonial Manor in Elma.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 28, 2013 at Immaculate Conception Church in Elma with Father Steve Garner celebrating.  Burial will be at a later date.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013 at Conway-Markham Funeral Home in Elma with a 4:30 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. scriptural wake service.  Visitation will continue at the funeral home one hour prior to the funeral mass on Monday.  In Lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the family.  Online condolences for Peggy’s family may be left at www.conway-markhamfh.com.

Margaret “Peggy” Ann was born to Louis and Margaret (Ruhoff) Kobliska on July 1, 1922 in Alta Vista.  She attended and graduated from Immaculate Conception School in Elma.  She was united in marriage to John “Ed” Edward Beecher on February 3, 1941 at Immaculate Conception in Elma.  The couple made their home on the Beecher family farm until July 19, 1994 when they moved to town after a tornado destroyed their farm.  Peggy enjoyed gardening, quilting, sewing, embroidery and reading.  She was a lifetime member of Immaculate Conception Church and Rosary Society. 

Peggy is survived by her seven children, Sharon Gansen of Elma, Lindy (Wendy) Beecher of Eagan, Minn, Pat (Wayne) Arnold of Elma, Betty Jo (Jack) Hastings of Alta Vista, Mary (Bill) Roths of Cedar Falls, Marcia (Greig) Grimm of Charles City, June (Arnie) Laures of Waukon; 23 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Ed; her grandson, Jason; her son-in-law, Jim Gansen; her sister, Lucile and her brother, Leonard.

Madonna (Donna) Bynon died Jan. 16, 2013 in Palos Verdes Estates, California.

Donna was born February 7, 1923 in Waukon, to James and Agnes (Bolton) Finnegan. She was the eldest of eight children.  Donna married Gilbert Evans Bynon in Rock Springs, Wyoming on October 27, 1946, where they resided before moving to Torrance, California in 1957.

Survivors include her husband Gilbert, daughter Patricia Mcilraith (Bill McKaig); son Larry (Sheri) of Torrance and daughter-in-law Betty Bynon of Ionia. Donna is blessed with seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.  Donna leaves three sisters, a brother, two sister-in-laws and a brother-in-law, all of Iowa. She is preceded in death by her son, David, two brothers and a sister.

A Memorial service will be held 11 a.m., Sunday Jan. 27 at Rice Mortuary, 5310 Torrance Blvd., Torrance 90503. Reception to follow. Burial will be in St. Boniface Catholic Church Cemetery, Ionia. Please go to the mortuary's website, www.lafuneral.com. to send the family messages.


Mildred D. Fossen dies at 81

Mildred D. Fossen, age 81, of rural Lawler, passed away on Jan. 26, 2013 at her home.

Funeral services will be on Thursday, Jan. 31, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Jerico Lutheran Church in Jerico with Pastor Daniel Larson officiating.  Burial will be in the church cemetery with Bob, Marvin, Mike, Ron, Curtis, Wyman, and Dave Martinek serving as casket bearers. 

Visitation will be at the church from 10 a.m. to the time of the service on Thursday only.

Mildred Doris Martinek was born on March 27, 1931 to Louis and Bessie (Pecinovsky) Martinek in Cresco.  She attended country school and graduated from Ridgeway High School.  Mildred then attended and graduated from Luther College in Decorah; earning her teaching degree.  She taught country school and then taught 5th grade at Ridgeway School until her retirement in 1971.  Mildred was united in marriage to Harold “Buggs” Fossen on September 5, 1964 at Jerico Lutheran Church.  The couple farmed all of their married life east of Jerico.  She was a member of Jerico Lutheran Church and the Protivin Chapter #85 W.F.L.A.

Mildred enjoyed fishing, hunting, farming, and visiting with family and friends.   She was the shuttle for nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.  She was a good source for all of the area and family history.

She is survived by her nieces and nephews; Rose Njus of Lawler, Doris (Frankie) Kizer of Bradford, TN, Bob (Lori) Martinek of Cresco, Marvin (Michelle) Martinek of Cresco, Carol (Dan) Hrubes of Ankeny, Mike (Ramona) Martinek of Cresco, Betty (Todd) Nash of Belmond, Ron (Beth) Martinek of Rockwell, Susan Martinek of Chicago, IL, Curtis (Kirsten) Martinek of Ames, Wyman (Melissa) Martinek of Madrid, Dave Martinek of Cresco, Janet (Dave) Stalock of Rochester, MN; sister-in-law, JoAnne Martinek of Cresco and several great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Harold “Buggs” Fossen and three brothers, Clarence, Arthur, and Edward Martinek.


Craig K. Chenoweth dies at 70

Craig K. Chenoweth, age 70 of Fitchburg, Wisc., formerly of Nashua, passed away Jan. 24, 2013, at the Agrace Hospice in Fitchburg, Wisc.  

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 28, 2013, at the United Methodist Church, Nashua with Pastor Okitakoyi Lundula presiding.  

Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Nashua with Gary Olson, Kevin Gilbert, Jack Link, Terry Link, Rev. Realff Ottesen, Dan Roberts, and Jerry Dietz serving as pallbearers.  

Friends may greet the family 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013, at the Hugeback - Johnson Funeral Home in Nashua.

Craig Kent Chenoweth was born on August 23rd, 1942, in Charles City, the son of James E. and Elsie B. (Treloar) Chenoweth. Growing up, Craig was very active in Boy Scouts and sports, earning his Eagle Scout award in 1956 and playing football for Nashua High School. Craig was an all conference and all state offensive linemen and a member of the 1959 Corn Bowl Conference championship team. This team went undefeated and was named the Des Moines Register Class 2 State Champions. Craig graduated from Nashua High School in 1960 and then earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of Iowa and a Mortuary Science degree from the University of Minnesota. He served his one year apprenticeship in Nashua and Fredericksburg with his dad (James) and grandfather (Earl), becoming a licensed funeral director in 1964.

Craig was united in marriage with Judith Link at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Ionia, on August 24th, 1963. To this union, three children were born: Carol, Brett, and Andrew. The family moved to Sioux Falls, SD in 1966, where Craig started his first job, traveling the state of South Dakota for Congoleum-Nairn floor covering. Craig was a very successful salesman and before long, was offered a position with Masonite Corporation, where he sold building supplies in South Dakota.  

In 1972, Craig took a position with Dubuque Casket Company, traveling the southern half of Minnesota. They then moved to Mankato, Minn. where they lived until 1976. In 1976, Craig was transferred to Oelwein, where they lived until moving to Nashua, in 1979. On July 1, 1981, Craig purchased the family funeral home business and furniture store from his father. Craig provided a critical service to grieving families in the Nashua and Fredericksburg areas for over 20 years before selling it on Jan 1, 2003 to the Hugeback family. 

Craig and Judy moved to Fitchburg, in July 2010 to be near their children. Craig’s greatest enjoyment came from watching his grandchildren. His weeks and weekends were always filled with football, wrestling, baseball, track, hockey, soccer, golf, and basketball. Craig was a member of the United Methodist Church, Iowa Funeral Directors Association, National Funeral Directors Association, the Masonic Tyrrell Lodge # 116 of Waverly, and El Kahir Shrine. 

He is survived by his wife, Judy; one daughter, Carol (Troy) Mitchell, of Fitchburg, Wisc; two sons, Brett (Alicia) of New Glarus, Wisc; Andrew (Amy) of Geneva, Ill; one brother, Mike (Lynn) Chenoweth of Palenville, NY; 6 grandchildren: Viktor Mitchell; James, John and Robert Chenoweth; Owen and Chloe Chenoweth; mother-in-law, Mary Link of Elma; brothers-in-law, Jack (Kay) Link of Mason Neck, VA, Jim (Sandra) Link of Ionia, Terry (Ellen) Link of Pembroke Pines, FL; sister-in-law Marilou Roberts (Dan) of Clemson, SC; and one aunt, Estelle Treloar of Cedar Falls. 

Craig was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, Earl and Edna (Andrew) Chenoweth, Ellsworth and Ada Blanche (Reed) Treloar; and father-in-law Louis Link.


Frances R. Arens dies at 103

Frances R. Arens, age 103 of Lawler, died Friday afternoon, Jan. 25, 2013, at her home. 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, 2013, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, Lawler with Rev. Nick March celebrating the Mass. The pall will be placed on the casket by her six grandchildren. Pat Lynch will be the lector and the offertory gifts will be presented by Danielle Mashek, Connor Best and Anna Arens.
 
Internment will be in the church cemetery with Paul Mashek, David Mashek, Bill Arens, Debbie Best, Mike Arens and Sara Moore serving as pallbearers. 

Friends may greet the family 4 - 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2013, at the Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home in New Hampton where there will be a 4 p.m. rosary and a 6 p.m. parish scripture service. Frances Rosemary Arens was born February 3, 1909, in Ft. Atkinson, the daughter of Frank and Alouisa (Berst) Sattler. She received her elementary and high school education in Lawler. On August 20, 1929, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler, she married William Clarence Arens. To this union three sons were born and the couple adopted a daughter as well. Both Bill and Frances lived on farms their entire lives. The couple began farming on several farms in the Lawler area until purchasing the current home place in 1955. In her younger years, Frances loved working in her garden and raising geese around the farm. She raised 125 geese every year for many years. She spent more time outdoors than inside. William Arens died in 1970 at the age of 67, leaving behind his wife for another 42 years. For most people in the area, Frances was 'always around'. For many years, Frances would chauffeur the 'older' ladies to where ever they needed to go. She will be remembered by everyone as a great visitor who always wore a smile on her face. She was the number one fan for her grandchildren, especially in attending all of their sporting and school events. Frances was happy that she could remain in her own home and that her desire to pass away at her home was granted.  

Survivors include one son, Donald (Grace) Arens of Lawler; six grandchildren, Paul J. Mashek, David Mashek, Bill (Nicole) Arens, Debbie (Brad) Best, Mike (Linda Warren) Arens, Sara (Mason) Moore, nine great-grandchildren, Anthony J. Mashek, Danielle Mashek, Anna, Aubrey, and Luke Arens, Connor, Josie, and Hailey Best and Avery Moore.  

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two sons in infancy, Duwayne Arens and William Arens; one daughter, Arlene (Mashek) Yeager; one brother and sister-in-law, Duane "Bushy" and Leona Sattler.


Elizabeth Bigley dies at 87

Elizabeth Ann “Bette” Bigley, age 87, of Elma, died on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013 at Regional Health Services in Cresco.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2013 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Msgr. Carl Schmitt celebrating mass.  Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery at Elma, with her children Patty Korsmo, Tom Bigley, Mike Bigley, Deb Shroyer, Nancy Bowen and Tim Bigley serving as casket bearers.

Elizabeth Ann McAvoy was born on February 9, 1925 to Edward and Mabel (Roche) McAvoy in Elma.  She attended Immaculate Conception School in Elma and graduated in 1942.  Bette was employed by Chamberlin Manufacturing in Waterloo.  She was united in marriage to Bud Bigley on September 8, 1943 in Texarkana, Texas.  The couple farmed and raised their family near Elma.  Bette was employed at Colonia Manor for 17 years.  She enjoyed listening to big band music, dancing, reading, playing cards and spending time with her family.  She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Elma, the Rosary Society and the Chat and Question Club.

Bette is survived by her children Patty Korsmo of Cresco, Tom (Sharon) Bigley of Riceville, Mike (Coralee) Bigley of Elma, Deb (Bob) Shroyer of Portland, OR, Nancy (Mike) Bowen of Colorado Springs, Co., and Tim (Linda) Bigley of Johnston; 21 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; and brother-in-law Thomas Bigley of Milwaukee, Wisc. 

She is preceded in death by parents Edward and Mabel McAvoy, husband Bud in 1985, grandson Paul Bigley, two great grandsons Devon Korsmo and James Ornelas, one brother Leo McAvoy, and one sister Muriel Gardner.


Donald E. Blum dies at 83

Donald E. Blum age 83 of Nashua died Monday morning, Jan. 28, 2013, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Per Don’s request, no service will be held. Friends may greet the family Thursday, Jan. 31, 2013, from 4 to 7p.m. at the Hugeback – Johnson Funeral Home in Nashua. A private family interment will take place at a later date at the Rockford Cemetery. 

Donald Blum was born Feb. 20, 1929, to Philip and Helen (Allen) Blum at their farm northeast of Rockford. Upon graduating from Floyd High School in 1946, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps serving in the Korean War. While serving in Korea in 1951, he was called back to the states for Officers Candidate School in Quantico, VA. He turned down the commission, and was then stationed at Camp Pendleton, Oceanside, CA. 

In November, 1952, he came home on leave to marry Jeanne Helmers at the Methodist Church in Marble Rock. To this union four sons were born. After getting married the couple returned to Camp Pendleton where they resided until his discharge in January 1954.

Don and Jeanne returned to Iowa with their six-week old son, David, and farmed near Rockford, for a number of years. In 1964 he started working at Hydrotile in Nashua, as a welder and continued working there as a shop foreman until the plant closed in 1991. Once retiring Don enjoyed his hobbies camping, hunting, fishing, gunsmithing, and cooking his favorite specialties. He especially enjoyed hunting Turkey, Deer, and Elk. Many times you would find Jeanne and his sons accompanying him on these hunts. Don was also an avid reader and history buff. 

Don was very supportive of conservation and environmental preservation issues, having served on the Chickasaw County Conservation Board. He was active in the Boy Scouts and sport activities with their four young sons, and taught them by example how to appreciate and respect the great outdoors. He was very proud of each of his sons. He was also a member of the Nashua VFW and the United Methodist Church.

Don is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Jeanne Blum; three sons, Steven (Laura) Blum of Nashua, Robert (Maria) Blum of Logan, NM, James (Nancy) Blum of Sturgeon Bay, WI; daughter-in-law, Dawn Tracy Blum of West Des Moines; sister, Carol Jensen of Queen City, AZ; sister-in-law, Viola Kingery of Charles City; eleven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and son, David Blum (2011).

Jack Dale Laird died at 78

Jack Dale Laird, 78, a former resident of Plainfield, died at his home in Aberdeen, Washington, Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013.  He was born in Charles City, March 5, 1934, the son of Vernon and Miriam (Winters) Laird.  He graduated from Plainfield High School in 1952 and had served in the US Army from 1955-57.

He married Marilyn Smith in Plainfield on July 21, 1957. They lived in Waterloo and Nashua, before moving to Coos Bay, Oregon in 1969 where he had worked in the timber industry for a while. 

They then moved to Sutherlin, OR where Jack began work in a funeral home.  He went on to Mt. Hood Community College, Gresham, OR where he completed his degree in Funeral Service Education in 1972.  He found a position at the Whitesides Family Mortuary in Elma, WA and the family moved there that same year.  In 1973, Jack received his Associate in General Studies from Grays Harbor College, Aberdeen, WA. In 1976, Jack was transferred by the company to manage the Elerding Mortuary in Aberdeen until it closed and he continued his association with the company at Whitesides in Aberdeen.  After 23 years with the company, Jack began work with Fern Hill Funeral Home in Aberdeen.  In 1999 he semi-retired and became associated with Stoller’s Mortuary in Raymond until he fully retired in March of 2012.  He was a well known and loved funeral director in this area.  His wife of 32 years, Marilyn, died in Aberdeen in 1989.

Jack was a member of the Aberdeen Eagles Aerie and the Aberdeen Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 224.  He loved going camping with his family, house-boating on Lake Shasta in Northern California, road trips to Reno, spending time with his grandkids and great-granddaughters, working crossword puzzles and playing solitaire on the computer.  He also had many beer cans that he had collected over the years.

Jack is survived by three sons: twins, Dale and wife Sandy, Cosmopolis, WA and Dean and wife Patty, Eugene, OR, and Scott and wife Suzy, Aberdeen, WA; eight grandchildren: Angela and husband Kyle Scott, Janelle Laird and fiancé Nick Ancich, Drew, Devin and Samantha Laird, and Brittney, Amber and Brandon Bensinger; and also three great granddaughters: Aili, Kirsi and Kaija Scott.  Jack is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins whom he loved to spend time with.  Besides his wife, Marilyn, Jack was preceded in death by his parents, a son at birth, Dennis, in 1958 and his sisters: Shirley Cagley and Margaret Waters.

A celebration of Jack’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013 in the chapel at Fern Hill Funeral Home, Aberdeen.  A reception will follow in the Dorothy Mann Reception Room at the funeral home.  Jack will be laid to rest with his wife in Willow Lawn Cemetery, Plainfield, later this summer.

Velma Marjorie TeKippe dies at 95

Velma Marjorie TeKippe, age 95, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013 at the New Hampton Rehabilitation facility.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013 at Holy Family Parish - St. Joseph’s Center in New Hampton with Father Mark Osterhaus celebrating the mass.  Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in New Hampton.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 1, 2013 at Conway-Markham Funeral Home in New Hampton.  Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the funeral mass on Saturday.  Memorials may be directed to the family.  Online condolences for Velma’s family may be left at www.conway-markhamfh.com.

Velma was born to William and Anna (Johnson) Mettner on April 27th, 1917. She graduated from New Hampton High school and taught in the rural schools in the area. On April 10th, 1939 she married Paul TeKippe. They made their home in Fort Atkinson, New Hampton, Cameron MO, San Francisco, *** in the Navy, and New Hampton, and Gladbrook. They worked side by side in the grocery stores for over 60 years. Paul and Velma were the proud parents of son Richard (Margaret Fitzgerald) TeKippe. They were also the proud grandparents of Jeff, Laura, Joe (Jamie), John (Sherri), and Jim (Stephanie), and great grandchildren P.J. Michael, Heather (Kyle), J.R., Hannah, Gerene, Ritchie, Madison, and Nicholas. At Christmas Velma was able to make her acquaintance with a great great grandson Lincoln (Heather Maakestad). Velma and Paul loved having the grandchildren come to their store in Gladbrook. Velma is preceded in death by her husband Paul in 1995, her grand-daughter Laura in 2011, and her brothers Virgil and Harold in addition to her parents.

Velma was a lifelong member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Catholic Daughters of America. After returning to New Hampton she was active in the St Joseph's church and schools. Velma did a beautiful job of laundering the church linens and was a volunteer aid for the preschool and kindergarten classes. She also participated in "grandparents day" for a niece and nephew. In addition to loving her family, Velma loved fashion and was known for her love of her high heels.
