Betty Jean Lindhorst dies at 87

Betty
Jean Lindhorst age 87, passed away on Friday, Dec. 10, 2010, at the
Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.
Funeral services for Betty Jean Lindhorst were held on Monday, Dec. 13,
2010, at 1:30 p.m. at Oakcrest Funeral Services in Algona with Reverend
Okitakoyi Landula officiating. Burial was in East Lawn Cemetery.
Betty Jean Lindhorst was born March 1, 1923, in Austin, Minnesota, the
daughter of Martin and Ruth (Tallmadge) Holte. During her early years,
she lived with her mother and step-father, Leland Wildin, near Algona,
and Marshall, Minn. Betty graduated from high school in Marshall,
Minnesota. She worked as a sales clerk in the S & L Department Store in
Algona before her marriage to Kenneth Lindhorst on June 29, 1947. To
this marriage three children were born, two daughters, Sheryl Lee and
Joleen Rae and a stillborn son, Garry Lynn.
Betty and Kenny moved their family to Ionia, in 1954 where they had
purchased a farm. They farmed there until Kenny’s retirement in 1984.
They owned a cabin on a lake near Faribault, Minn., for many years and
enjoyed spending time there. In 1994, they moved to a house in Charles
City. Kenny passed away in July of 2000. In December 2006, Betty moved
to Riverside Assisted Living in Charles City and in Oct. 2010, she moved
to the 11 Street Chautauqua Guest Homes where she lived at the time of
her death.
Betty enjoyed fishing and crocheting as she made hundreds of crocheted
afghans over the years. She was a long time member of the United Church
of Christ in Ionia.
She is survived by her daughters, Sherry and Leon Wait of Nashua; Joleen
Lindhorst of Charles City; two granddaughters, LeAnne Wait of Waterloo;
Valerie and Greg Hennings of Waverly and a great-granddaughter, Madelyn
Hennings of Waverly.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and infant son, Gary.

Julaine J. Farrell dies at 62

J. Farrell age 62 of New Hampton died Saturday, Dec. 11, 2010, at her
home.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 16,
2010, at Holy Family Parish - St. Joseph Center, New Hampton with Rev.
Mark Osterhaus celebrating the Mass. Her five daughters will place the
pall on the casket. James Neuzil will be the Lector and the offertory
gifts will be presented by Nolan and Brock Hromidko, Ashlee Crawford,
Paige and Curtis Nelson, Levi Suhr.
Interment will be in the New Hampton City Cemetery with Todd Suhr, Tony
Crawford, Dylan Suhr, James Howe, James Neuzil and Dennis Howe serving
as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Levi Suhr, Paige Nelson, Curtis
Nelson, Taylor Neuzil, Nolan Hromidko, Brock Hromidko, Rylee Simpson,
Ashlee Crawford and Caycee Crawford.

Julaine Jean Farrell was born February 17, 1948, in Charles City, the
daughter of Walter and Bernadine (Brown) Howe. She grew up in Rockford,
and was a graduate of the Charles City High School. On March 20, 1965,
she married Kenneth William Farrell. To this union five daughters were
born. The couple made New Hampton their home where Julaine worked at
Mercy Medical Center for over 29 years. She spent her life devoted to
her family and will be remembered as a loving wife, mother and
grandmother.
Survivors include her husband of 45 years, Kenneth; five daughters,
Shelly (Todd) Suhr of New Hampton, Karri Simpson of Cedar Rapids, Penney
(James) Neuzil of Ft. Atkinson, Robyn (Tony) Crawford of New Hampton,
Kelley Farrell of Cedar Rapids; her mother, Bernadine Howe of Rockford;
two brothers, Dennis (Diane) Howe of Mason City, James (Rhonda) Howe of
Rockford; three sisters, Janelle (Dana) Larson of Rudd, Diane Howe,
Kathy (Bryan) Hobbs all of Rockford; ten grandchildren, Dylan Suhr, Levi
Suhr, Nolan Hromidko, Brock Hromidko, Rylee Simpson, Paige Nelson,
Curtis Nelson, Taylor Neuzil, Ashlee Crawford and Caycee Crawford; her
mother-in-law, Maxine Farrell of Charles City; two brothers-in-law, John

H. Stapleton, age 67, of New Hampton, died of a sudden heart attack at
Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton.

James “Jim” Henry Stapleton was born Feb. 8, 1943 to Harold and Lucille
(Kobliska) Stapleton in Elma. Jim graduated from Elma High School in
1961. He enlisted in the U. S. Navy in 1961 and served as a postal clerk
on the USS McMorris off the coast of Vietnam. After his honorable
discharge he was united in marriage to Gloria Stiefel on Nov. 18, 1967
at Immaculate Conception Church in Charles City. The couple made their
home in New Hampton where they have lived ever since. Jim was a city
mail carrier for the New Hampton Post Office for 42 years before
retiring in 2006, as well as, farming dairy cattle and hogs. Jim also
helped Gene Dorsey and his father as an auctioneer. Since Jim retired he
has been a part-time maintenance man for the South Gate and Super 8
motels in New Hampton. Jim enjoyed fixing clocks, being a handy man,
traveling and antiquing, football and spending time with his family.
Jim is survived by his loving wife, Gloria of New Hampton; his children,
Shelby (Katherine) Stapleton of New Hampton, Salina (Bill) Gavin of
Waterloo; two sisters, Judith Biwer of Zumbrota, Minn., and Joyce (Ron)
Swestka of Protivin; and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; twin brothers at birth; his
son, Shawn; brother-in-law, Lee Stiefel; and sister-in-law, Shirley
Flick.
Edwin J. Weigel dies at 90

J. Weigel, age 90, of New Hampton, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2010
at New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in New Hampton.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec.
14, 2010 at Holy Family Parish - St. Joseph's Center in New Hampton with
Fr. Mark Osterhaus celebrating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery at
New Hampton. Michelle Lau will be the pianist accompanying Chris
Carrier, the cantor. Congregational hymns will be “Servant Song”, “O
Come, O Come, Emmanuel”, “Taste And See”, “Quietly, “Peacefully”, and
“On Eagles Wings”. Edwin’s family will be lectors. Eucharistic ministers
are Marlene Weigel, Florence Throndson, and Jack Gorman. Edwin’s
children will be gift bearers and placed the pall.

Edwin Joseph Weigel was born June 6, 1920 to John William and Mathilda (Blaska)
Weigel on the family farm north of New Hampton. He attended country
school until he graduated the grade 12 from New Hampton High School.
During these years he farmed on the family farm. On September 19, 1944
Edwin was united in marriage to Rose C. Schwickerath at St. Joseph’s
Catholic Church in New Hampton. The couple farmed northeast of New
Hampton until 1999 when they moved to New Hampton. Over the years Edwin
raised hogs and cattle, and farmed. He belonged to the Iowa Pork
Producers, Catholic Order of Foresters, and the Knights of Columbus.
During his years of marriage the couple spent many memorable moments
dancing, playing cards, traveling and spending time with family, which
he enjoyed very much.
Edwin is survived by two daughters Audrey Conner of Charlotte, NC, and
Madonna (Mark) Fohrman of Dover, Minn.; one son Andrew (Gloria) of
Onalaska, Wisc. along with eight grandchildren and 16
great-grandchildren.
Preceding his death was his loving wife of 56 years, Rose; his parents;
one daughter, Alberta;
one son, David; three sisters Emma Wild, Sister Mary Madonna Weigel,
Stacia Hackman; two brothers Francis and Leo Weigel; one
great-granddaughter, Morgan Jacobson and one great-grandson Edwin
Alford.

Ortha was born March 21, 1923, in rural Floyd County, the daughter of
Carl and Margaret (Carpenter) Ferch. She attended Nashua schools,
graduating in 1941. On June 24, 1941, Ortha was united in marriage to
Owen Liddle in Bremer County. She spent the majority of her life living
and working on the farm, but also worked for a short time at the school
as a cook. Ortha loved fishing, flowers, and gardening. She enjoyed
baking and visits by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include her daughter, Virginia Soldwisch of Nashua; two
sisters, Elaine Lantow of Shell Rock, and Marie (Kurt) Schmidt of
Corona, Calif.; one daughter-in-law, Kathy Liddle of San Bernadino,
Calif.; four grandchildren, Susan Soldwisch of Lathrop, Mo., Randy
(Kathy) Soldwisch of North Liberty, Gary (Andrea) Soldwisch of Gilbert,
Ariz., and Pat (Maria) Liddle of San Bernadino, Calif.; eight
grandchildren, Joshua Watts, Benjamin, Madison, and Emma Soldwisch,
Izabella Soldwisch, Sean, Andrew, and Aiden Liddle; and many nieces and
nephews.
She was preceded in death by her Husband, Owen in 1994; her parents; two
sisters, Marjorie Kelly and Mardelle Greenlee; one brother, Russell

Irma Lucille Fobes dies at 94

Lucille Fobes, age 94, of Waverly, died Saturday, Dec. 18, 2010, at the
Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly.
Irma has been cremated and memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on
Tuesday, Dec. 21, at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Waverly with
Pastor Deborah Wise officiating. There will be a private family burial
of cremains on Tuesday.
Irma was born on April 26, 1916, east of Earlville, the daughter of
Cornelius D. and May Jane (Morris) Hunt. She attended the Earlville
Consolidated Schools graduating from high school in 1933. She then
attended Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls for two years where
she received her teaching certificate in secondary education. She then
taught in Greeley, McGregor, and Edgewood, ( fifth grade). On Dec. 31,
1940, she was united in marriage to A. Glen Fobes in Manchester. Upon
Glen’s discharge from the army in 1946 the couple made their home in
Edgewood. While in Edgewood, Irma was active in the Methodist Church
where she participated with the U.M.W. and taught Sunday school. She
also served as Worthy Matron of Avalon Chapter of Eastern Star, and
belonged to the Edgewood Women’s Club. In Dec. of 1988, she and Glen
moved to Waverly to be closer to their daughter’s family. While in
Waverly, she became a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Matin
Circle of the church, a member of the Literature Club, and enjoyed her
involvement with the Walk and Talk Club. Her interest included her
family, church, needle work, reading, and playing bridge.
Irma’s memory is honored by her husband A. Glen Fobes of Waverly, a son,
Steven (Penny) Fobes of Hilton Head, South Carolina a daughter, Jean
(Jerry) Rochford, of New Hampton, three grandchildren, Jerry J. Rochford
of Guttenberg, James Rochford of Edgewood, and Joel (Andrea) Rochford of
New Hampton, and seven great-grandchildren, Payton, Preston, Parker,
Pyrce, Conner, Carlee, and Caden Rochford.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Dale, Kenneth,
and Clarence Hunt, and two sisters, Hazel Hunt and Viola Wilkinson.

Bernice Margaret Stiefel was born in the New Hampton hospital on March
26, 1925, daughter of John and Sophia (Weise) Stiefel. She attended the
New Hampton Public School graduating with the class of 1943.After
graduation from high school she was employed as a secretary by R.J.
Sullivan, Attorney at Law for several years. Later she was employed as a
bookkeeper for the Barnett Appliance store. She married Fern Hammond on
Jan. 15, 1951 and they have lived in Elma until now. Besides being a
wife and mother, she was employed by Howard Winneshiek Schools for 20
years as a secretary. Bernice enjoyed bowling, playing cards, especially
Bridge, and visiting with family and friends. Bernice was an active
member of the Elma United Methodist Church and the Elma American Legion
Auxiliary. She also helped with getting the first library started and
into its own facility.
Survivors include her husband; two children Randy Lee Hammond of
Brooklyn Center, Minn. and Denise Ann (David) Bergo of Plymouth, Minn;
two grandchildren Gretchen (Brent) Wegner and Stephanie Bergo; and one
great granddaughter Gemma Lillian Wegner.
She was preceded in death by her parents; six brothers Henry, George,
Albert, Walter, Rudy and John Stiefel; and one sister Irma (Alvie)
Althof.

Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2010 with his wife, Madonna, by his side.

Thursday, Dec. 23, 2010, at the Bartels Lutheran Home in Waverly.

Mary Marie Zwanziger was born October 14, 1912, in rural Bremer County,
on the family farm, the daughter of Francis and Grace (Marks) Buckel.
She received her education at the Six-Mile Grove School. On June 1,
1932, she married ‘the neighbor boy’ Leo Zwanziger at the Methodist
Parsonage in Galena, Ill. Marie lived her entire life in Bremer County
farming side-by-side with her husband until his death in 1965. She
remained on the farm until 1971 when she moved to Waverly. Marie was an
active gardener in her younger days and a member of the Plainfield
United Methodist Church Women as well as an officer of the Horton
Cemetery Society.
Marie also baby-sat for many children in Waverly and was also a Pink
Lady at the Waverly Hospital. Nothing meant more to Marie than her
family. In her free time she enjoyed embroidery and doing word puzzles.
Survivors include two daughters, Jean Balvanz of Shell Rock, Linda (Don)
Luck of Clarksville, TN; two sons, William (Peggy) Zwanziger of Ionia,
Leland (Patricia) Zwanziger of Nashua; thirteen grandchildren,
thirty-nine great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren;
numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leo in 1965; son,
Duane Zwanziger and daughter-in-laws, Delores Zwanziger and Carol
Zwanziger; son-in-law, Ernest Balvanz; six brothers, William, Clifford,
Francis, August “Pete”, Robert and John Buckel; two sisters, Buelah
Buckel and Gertrude Olson.

Bernice M. Kramer was born Dec. 2, 1925 in the Jacksonville Township of
Chickasaw County, the daughter of Elias and Anna (Landa) Weigel. She
attended St. Joseph School in New Hampton. On Nov. 22, 1952 in Preston,
Minn, Bernice was united in marriage to Francis “Stub” Cramer. The
couple lived in Waterloo where Bernice worked 32 years for the Powers
Manufacturing Company as a seamstress and instructor. She was a member
of the AmVets in Evansdale.
Survivors include many nieces and nephews; a sister-in-law; a
step-daughter; step-grandchildren; and step-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on Dec. 27, 1985;
and five brothers, Raymond, Claire, Donald, Bud, and Paul Weigel in
infancy.

Diane Lee Martin was born Sept. 20, 1931, in New Hampton, the daughter
of Jess and Betty (Stevens) Martin. She received her education in
Nashua. She enjoyed traveling to places including New York, California,
Texas and Washington D.C., where she participated in Special Olympics,
receiving several medals of which she was very proud. Diane enjoyed
bowling and won trophies in Waterloo and Des Moines tournaments. In her
later years she was the Wii bowling champion and the New Hampton Nursing
and Rehabilitation Center.
Diane also enjoyed activities at the New Hampton at the New Hampton
Senior Center, playing solitaire on the computer and visiting with
friends. She was loved by many for her cheerful smile and out-going
personality.
Diane was a member of the congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. She had
developed a strong faith in God’s promise of a new world to come, where
pain and disability will be thing of the past. Diane faithfully shared
this message with others.
Survivors include her sister, Dorothy Watzke of Willmar, Minn; four
nephews and two nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Jerome Francis Hentges dies at 59

Francis Hentges passed away on Dec. 22, 2010 at Lakes Regional
Healthcare in Spirit Lake, at fifty-nine years of age.
A funeral service for Jerry Hentges, of Spirit Lake, was held Monday,
Dec. 27, 2010 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Spirit Lake. Burial was
at St. Margaret’s Cemetery in Spirit Lake.
Jerry was born October 1, 1951 in Waterloo, the son of Francis Jerome
Hentges and Myrna Mae Costigan. He attended St. Mary’s Catholic Grade
School in New Hampton and graduated in 1969 from New Hampton Community
High School. Jerry attended Ellsworth Community College and then
graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 1976 with a teaching
degree. He received his Masters Degree in Counseling from Drake
University in 1991.
On June 15, 1974, Jerry was united in marriage to Paula Sue Anderson in
New Hampton. The family lived in Holton, Kansas, Lake Mills, and Lake
Park, where he taught and coached. The family then moved to Spirit
Lake, in 1991.
Jerry worked as the Spirit Lake Middle School Guidance Counselor and
Athletic Director. He was head wrestling coach for Lake Park and Spirit
Lake for many years followed by several years of refereeing including
the Iowa State Wrestling Tournament. He also coached in the middle
school and was a Drivers-Education instructor.
Jerry enjoyed pheasant hunting with his German Shorthair, Annie, pontoon
riding with his family, fishing, riding his Harley and trips to South
Dakota.
He is survived by his wife, Paula of Spirit Lake; three children, Tera
(Ben) O’Malley of Chicago, Illinois, Leah (Jacob) Cruze of Minneapolis,
Minnesota and Jenna Hentges at the University of Iowa; his parents,
Francis and Myrna Hentges; two sisters, Kathleen (Mark) Timlin of
Lawler, and Colleen (Paul) Kruger of New Hampton; one brother, Thomas
(Carol) Hentges of Eagan, Minnesota; three nieces and two nephews. He is
also survived by his mother-in-law Rosemary Anderson.
Jerry was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Harold and
Kathleen Costigan, his paternal grandparents, Frank and Anna Hentges,
and his father-in-law, Paul Anderson.
