John T. Burke, 81 of Elma, died Sunday, Nov. 1, at Mercy Medical
Center, New Hampton.
Mass of Christian Burialis 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4, at Immaculate
Conception Catholic Church, Elma, with Father John Harpel as celebrant.
Theresa Burke will be the organist accompanying the choir in singing
“Here I Am Lord”, “Precious Lord Take My Hand”, “I Am the Bread of
Life”, “Lead Me Lord”, “How Great Thou Art” and “Song of Farewell”.
Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery at Elma, with Mike O’Brien, Scott
O’Brien, Kevin O’Brien, Nick Burke, Tylor Burke, Aaron Burke and Jake
Burke serving as casket bearers. Honorary casket bearers will be John’s
grandchildren. Military rites will be provided by the Elma American
Legion John Frahm Post 597.
Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3, at Conway-Kolbet Funeral
Home, Elma with a 4 p.m. Rosary and a scriptural wake service at 7 p.m.
Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the Funeral
Home on Wednesday.
John Thomas Burke “Jack” was born on May 13, 1928 to William and Alice (Bilek)
Burke in Elma. Jack attended country school near Elma. He helped his dad
on the family farm until 1955 when he enlisted in the United States Army
serving with the Eleventh Airborne Division until his honorable
discharge in 1957. Jack returned home to farm with his dad and brother
Norbert. He continued to farm after moving to Elma in 1994. Jack
was united in marriage to Eleanor Wichman on February 1, 1958 at Our
Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Lawler, IA. The couple then farmed the
Burke family farm and raised their 12 children.
Jack enjoyed farming and milking cows, fishing and spending time with
his family. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in
Elma.
Jack is survived by his wife Eleanor of Elma; 12 children, Ann (Dennis)
O’Brien of Elma, John Burke of Cresco, Edward (Sue) Burke of Elma,
Joseph (Sandra) Burke of Lime Springs, Patrick (Renee) Burke of Elma,
Gene Burke of Elma, Rose (Jeff) Nibaur of Elma, Chuck (Wendy) Burke of
New Hampton, Dennis (Janna) Burke of Alta Vista, Rick (Lois) Burke of
Elma, Randy (Jenny) Burke of Elma, and Kenny (Christine) Burke of Elma;
32 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; three brothers Norbert
(Theresa) Burke of Elma, Donald (Fran) Burke of Cresco, and Jim (Judy)
Burke of Waterloo; three sisters Phyllis (Francis) Dietrich of Elma,

Agnes Marie Riley was born Nov. 17, 1917 to George and Elizabeth
(Gardner) Budke in Elma. Agnes graduated from Immaculate Conception
Academy in Elma, in 1936. On August 16, 1949 she married Paul James
Riley at Immaculate Conception Church at Elma. Agnes worked at the Elma
post office as a clerk for 36 years and retired on January 16, 1983.
Agnes enjoyed genealogy, collecting postal stamps and coins. She enjoyed
refinishing family heirloom furniture and harness shop tools. She was a
member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Elma, Rosary Society
and the United States Post Office Union.
Agnes is survived by two sisters-in-law Frances Shannon of New Hampton,
and Josephine Riley of Cape Coral, Fla; a brother-in-law Lee (Ronnie)
Riley of Charles City; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Paul on January 6,
1995; a Sister Mary Georgine (Elizabeth) RSM; a brother George and a
sister-in-law Mary Catherine Budke.

Lauren Harold Iverson, 80, of Cresco, passed away on Saturday,
Oct. 31, at St. Mary’s Hospital, Rochester, Minn.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, November 3, at 11 a.m. at the
First Lutheran Church, Cresco. Friends may call at the
Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco from 4-7 p.m. Monday and also one
hour prior to services at the church. Burial will be in
Orleans Lutheran Church Cemetery in rural Cresco.
Lauren was born on January 17, 1929 at home in LeRoy, Minn. to Grant
and Marie (Haga) Iverson. He was baptized on February 3, 1929
into the Christian Faith. At the age of 2, the family moved to
the family farm 9 ½ miles east of Cresco. Lauren was confirmed
at Orleans Lutheran Church on May 23, 1943. He attended 2
years at Decorah High School, and Junior and Senior years at Cresco
High, graduating on May 29, 1947, a member of the National Honor
Society.
On October 18, 1950 he married Selma Benson at Orleans Lutheran
Church. They farmed together for 17 years, and raised their
seven children. They moved to New Hampton, on July 3, 1973
where he constructed houses for a time before beginning to drive
semi truck for Mel Reicks of New Hampton, Johnsrud in Cresco, and
Beatrice out of Fredericksburg until he retired in 1993. Then
in 1997 he began driving for Featherlite and retired from there
after suffering a stroke on October 13, 2005.
He is survived by his wife, Selma of Cresco, and his children, Daryl
of Jerico, Debbie (Larry) Peterson of Rochester, Minn., Deann
(Galen) Staley of New Hampton, Doreen (Rodney) Ellingson of Cresco,
Denise (Christian) Miller of Cresco, Darlene (Randy) Anderson of New
Hampton, and David Iverson of New Hampton,16 grandchildren, Brian
(Jill) Peterson, Dean Peterson, Jason (Tami) & Justin (Marcy)
Landswerk, Jennifer (Loren) Scheidel, Angeline Doyle, Jess (Nichole)
Ellingson, Ross (Emily) Ellingson, Beth (Kory) Huber, Dana Kitchen,
Jay (Britni) Anderson, Jill, Kelly, and Gayle Anderson, and Chelsey

Hilda M. Lienau, 101, of Fredericksburg, died Tuesday, November
3, at the Hillcrest Home, Sumner.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday November 6, at the Peace
United Church of Christ, Fredericksburg with Pastor Burt Williams
officiating. Yvonne Lienau will be the organist with Faye Elliott,
vocalist.
Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Fredericksburg with Jalc
Lienau, Jill Urness, Julie Chase, Lynne Niemann, Troy Nicklaus,
Traci Nelson, Cathy Buhr, Lisa Leyh, Tricia Platte and Tom Lienau as
pallbearers. Flower committee will be Gary & Helen Schulz and Jack &
Marcia Schult.
Visitation will be 4 - 8 p.m. Thursday at Hugeback & Chenoweth
Funeral Home, Fredericksburg. Further visitation will continue one
hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.
Hilda Marie was born September 14, 1908, in Fredericksburg, the
daughter of John and Amelia (Mattke) Steege. She was baptized on
October 25, 1908, by H.W. Freytag and confirmed on March 25, 1923,
by J. Krause both in the Peace United Church of Christ in
Fredericksburg.
Hilda attended Pleasant Grove School in Fredericksburg, Township and
graduated 8th grade in New Hampton. She was united in marriage to
Albert Lienau on September 14, 1926, at the Peace United Church of
Christ in Fredericksburg. The couple farmed in the Sumner and
Fredericksburg areas. Hilda was a homemaker and helped with the
farming. After Albert’s death on April 26, 1966, she remained on the
farm until January 1967, when she moved into Fredericksburg. She
then worked at the Sunrise Guest Home for 11 ½ years, retiring in
November of 1977. Hilda moved to Sumner Senior Housing in 2003, and
to the Hillcrest Home in 2006.
Hilda enjoyed crocheting, making things for herself and her family,
especially her grandchildren. She made all her grandchildren and
great-grandchildren big sized afghans. She loved quilting parties
with friends and neighbors, the sewing and tieing of quilts at
church and also card parties. She was a member of the Ide While
Club, the Eucre Club, The Shanghei Club and the Senior Citizens. She
was a lifelong member of Peace United Church of Christ and also
belonged to the Women‘s Fellowship. She always loved entertaining,
especially birthday coffees.
Her love for her family will never be forgotten.
Hilda is survived by her son, Wayne (Yvonne) Lienau of Sumner;
daughter, Mary (Leon) Nicklaus of Sumner; 10 grandchildren; 29
great-grandchildren and 27 great-great-grandchildren; daughter in
law, Burnita Lienau of Fredericksburg; sister, Lena (Loren) James of
Scottsdale, AZ; brother-in-law, Melvin Schultz of Sumner.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Albert on
April 26, 1966; one son, LaVerne Lienau; three brothers, Elmer,
Victor and Paul Steege; one sister, Clara Schultz and one
granddaughter-in-law, Diane Lienau.

John F. Hansen, Sr., 72, of Fredericksburg died Tuesday, November 3, at
Covenant Medical Center of natural causes.
Services will be 1p.m. Monday at Garden View Chapel Funeral Home with
burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Public visitation will be 2
to 6 p.m. Sunday and one hour prior to services at the funeral home.
He was born January 3, 1937 in Waterloo, son of John F. and Gurna Mae
Dawson Hansen. He married Kathleen "Kay" Fink January 19, 1957 in
Braidwood, Illinois.
Mr. Hansen worked at Waterloo Box Factory, John Deere & Company,
Chamberlain Manufacturing, and was an ironworker with Local 89 when he
retired in 1994.
Survivors include his wife, Kay, of Fredericksburg; one son, John F.
Hansen, Jr. of Fredericksburg; five daughters, Tammy Steege of Charles
City, Karen (Lynn) Springmier of New Hampton, Sherry (Jack) Melver of
Ionia, Kim (Al) Steinlage of New Hampton, and Michelle (Sid) Gebel of
Lawler; one sister, Bernice Garcia of Independence; twelve
grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Diana Hansen; two
brothers, Robert and Raymond Hansen; and six sisters, Onie Hansen,
Virginia Kohl, Kathryn Nicol, Jessie Jabens, Myrtle June Stille, and

Charles City Mary A. Rowley, 63, of Charles
City, died Saturday evening, November 7, at her home in Charles
City.

Mary Ann
Chapin was born May 30, 1946, at Hampton, the daughter of Lynn and
Rosemary (Glasgow) Chapin. She graduated from the New Hampton
High School. On June 14, 1964, she was united in marriage to
Kenneth Rowley at New Hampton. Mary and Kenneth have owned and
operated Rowley Carpet Services outside Charles City for 20 years.
She was a member of the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church and
the Colwell United Church of Christ. Her interests included
attending her grandchildren’s athletic events, having coffee with
the girls, shopping, going to movies and dinner, driving her
4-wheeler, making pies, cooking, traveling and spending time with
her family.
Living family
members include her husband of 45 years, Kenneth Rowley of Charles
City; daughter, Rachael (Barry) Kelly of Nora Springs; son, Tim
Rowley and his special friend, Becky Ferch of Charles City; three
grandchildren, Brianna, Alyssa and Spencer Kelly all of Nora

Sharon Kay Helling, 50, of Carroll passed away
unexpectedly at her home Wednesday, Nov.18.

Born on November 29, 1958 in Ames, she was the daughter of Junior
and Shirley (Severeide) Thrasher. She grew up in the Ames – Gilbert
area and graduated from Gilbert High School in 1977. Sharon then
attended Iowa State University where she graduated with a Bachelor
of Science degree in Physical Education. She married Leon B. Helling
on June 20, 1981 in Ames, at St. Cecilia Catholic Church.
The Helling family has lived in Carroll for the past sixteen years.
During this time, Sharon has been a substitute school teacher in the
Carroll School District. She was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic
Church in Carroll and the Iowa State Alumni Association. In her
spare time she enjoyed attending Iowa State basketball games,
tailgating for ISU football games, reading, and spending time with
friends and family. Sharon was a devoted and loving wife, mother,
and friend.
Surviving are her husband Leon Helling; a daughter Jaclyn Helling of
Lawrence, KS and her fiancé Cody Stamm of Des Moines; a daughter
Allison Helling of Ankeny; her father Junior Thrasher of Ames; her
grandmother Evvie Severeide of Story City; her mother and
father-in-law Richard and Ann Helling of New Hampton; a sister Sue
Price and her husband Buddy of Gilbert, a brother-in-law John
Helling and his wife Linda of Harlan; a sister-in-law Bernadette
Christoph and her husband Dave of New Hampton, a brother-in-law Dale
Helling and his wife Joelene of West Des Moines; a brother-in-law
Larry Helling and his wife Jan of Marion; and several nieces and
nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother, Shirley Thrasher,
and her grandfather, Lester Severeide.

Edna K. Garner, 89, of Charles City, died Thursday, November 19,
at Elizabeth Martin Health Care Center, Western Home Communities,
Cedar Falls.
Funeral services for Edna Garner will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the
Hauser Funeral Home, Charles City. Pastor Margaret Hutchens of
the First Christian Church and Pastor Phil Corr of the First
Congregational Church will officiate. Burial will be in
Harlington Municipal Cemetery, Waverly.

Rita Schmitt, 86, of Fort Atkinson, died Wednesday, November 18,
at Barthell Eastern Star Home, Decorah.
Mass of Christian Burial is Saturday, Nov. 21 at St John's Catholic
Church, Fort Atkinson. Interment will be at St John's Catholic
Cemetery, Fort Atkinson.
Rita Marie (Kuhn) Schmitt was born on October 2,1923, the daughter
of Albert and Barbara (Shindelar) Kuhn, near Calmar. She was
the second of seven children. She attended St. Aloysius
Catholic Church and School in Calmar. She graduated from
Calmar High School in 1941. Rita married John E. Schmitt on
October 26, 1943, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar.
He was the son of Peter T. and Mary (Blong) Schmitt. Together
they farmed one mile southwest of Fort Atkinson for forty-three
years, until they retired and moved into Fort Atkinson. Their
son Carl and his family now operate the farm. Rita was a
member of St. John’s Catholic Church, where she was an active member
of the choir; helping with the directing and organ playing.
She was a religious education teacher for 20 years, was in the lay
ministry program and had served as Parish Guild president. She
was a member of the National Catholic Society of Foresters, the
Catholic Daughters of America and the American Legion Auxiliary.
She was known for her deep faith and the thousands of rosaries she
had made.
Rita’s survivors include her nine children: David (Margaret)
Schmitt, Zionsville, Ind; Mary (Ken) Dietzenbach, Waucoma; Mike
(Diane) Schmitt, Cresco; Tom (Sandi) Schmitt, Winchester, Va; Paul
(Bette) Schmitt, Fort Atkinson; Peter (Susan) Schmitt, Fort
Atkinson; Carl (Terry) Schmitt, Fort Atkinson; Ann (Gene) Elsbernd,
Fort Atkinson; and Jeanne (Larry) Neuzil, Spillville, along
with many grandchildren and great grandchildren: Jeff & Francis

Roman Schmitt and Joe Doucet. Three sisters-in-law: Theola

Dolora Johanna Sabelka, 80, of Lawler, died
Thursday, Nov. 19 after a short battle with cancer.
She passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by
her family.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Monday,
Nov. 23, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church,
Lawler with Rev. David Beckman celebrating the Mass.
The pall will be placed on the casket by her

Dolora Johanna Hackman was born May 16, 1929, on the
family farm north of St. Lucas, the youngest child
of Henry and Clara (Rausch) Hackman. She was
baptized and confirmed at St. Luke’s Catholic
Church. She graduated from St. Luke’s Catholic
School upon completion of 8th grade in 1943.
Dolora remained at home helping on the family farm
until her marriage.
On October 8, 1953 she was united in marriage to
Julian Sabelka at St. Luke’s Catholic Church, St.
Lucas by Monsignor Schuh. To this union, seven
children were born. Dolora dedicated her life
to being a wife and homemaker. The couple
farmed north of Lawler and just moved into Lawler on
Nov. 29, 2008. A highlight of this past year
in town for Dolora was celebrating her 80th birthday
with a party at her new home.
Dolora was a member of Sacred Heart – Reilly Ridge
Church and upon its closing transferred her
membership to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. She was
a member of the OLMC parish society. Dolora
enjoyed cooking, gardening, and sewing. She
and Julian enjoyed dancing together. Dolora’s
family brought her great joy.
Dolora is survived by her husband of 56 years,
Julian; two sons, Conrad Sabelka of New Hampton, and
Ralph Sabelka of Apple Valley Minn; five daughters,
Clarene (Antonio) Sierra of Savage Minn, Madonna
(Michael) Knudson, Blair Neb., Doris Sabelka (Bruce
Clawson), Rock Springs Wisc, Verna (Jack) Orvis,
Lawler, Ellen (Nick) Yordanoff, Pleasant Hill;
ten grandchildren Ashley Sierra (Andy Pomroy), Carl
Knudson (Angie Tomes), Laura Knudson (Chris
Douglas), Sarah (Kyle) Renn, Amanda Orvis (Barry
Reicks), Rachel Orvis, Anna and Keith Clawson, Ryan
and Haley Yordanoff; two step-great-grandchildren,
Jack Renn and Jaila Reicks; a brother, Hugo Hackman
of Ft. Atkinson, two sisters, Hilaria Kipp, of
Festina, and Leona Winter, of St. Lucas;
brother-in-law Jack (Shirley) Sabelka, of Little
Turkey, and sister-in-law, Mary Ann Hackman, of
Decorah.
She was preceded in death by her parents and
brothers Carl and Adolph Hackman and sisters Hilda
Brandsmeier and Rose Hackman, sister-in-law,
Ivanelle Crowe and brothers-in-law Carl Brandsmeier,
Edwin Kipp, Clarence Winter, and George Hackman.

Margaret V. Hurd, 86, of Nashua died Sunday, Nov. 22, at the 9th
Street Chautauqua Guest Home, Charles City.
Funeral services are 11a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 25, at St. John’s
Lutheran Church, Nashua with Pastor Thomas Hagan officiating.
Private family interment will take place at Greenwood Cemetery,
Nashua, at a later date.
Friends may call 4 - 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 24, at Hugeback &
Chenoweth Funeral Home, Nashua. Visitation continues an hour prior
to the funeral at the church on Wednesday.
Margaret Viva Hurd was born June 28, 1923, in Marble Rock, the
daughter of Harrison and Gertrude (Castle) Ackley. She received her
education through freshman year in Marble Rock and was a 1940
graduate of the Greene High School. On September 14, 1940, in Marble
Rock, she married Lester Lewis Hurd. To this union six children were
born. The couple farmed near Greene for 25 years and Margaret also
worked 13 years as custodian for the Highland Terrace Apartments in
Charles City. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in
Nashua and in her free time loved to crochet, her flower garden,
traveling, fishing, camping, playing the organ and time with her
grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include three sons, Ronald (Anna) Hurd of Nashua, Charles
(Jodell) Hurd of Garner, Steve (Julie) Hurd of Nashua; three
daughters, Sharon Woosley of Lebanon, Mo, Jackie (Randle)
Livingston, Mary (Arlen) Jannsen all of Nashua; 15 grandchildren, 21
great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter; one brother,
Kenneth Ackley of Dubuque.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband on January 29,
2000; three grandchildren; five sisters, Erma Snavely, Thelma Haungs,
Wilma Marion, Henrietta Meek and Beverly Woods; two brothers, Arthur
Ackley and Roger Ackley.
