Ralph S. Volk

Clear Lake -

Ralph S. Volk, 85, of Clear Lake, died Wednesday, Dec. 30, at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.
 
A funeral service was 2 p.m., Saturday, January 2, at Ward Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with Pastor Dianna Hoover officiating.  A Private family inurnment will take place Monday, January 4, at the Clear Lake Cemetery.
 
Visitation was 12 -2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 2, at Ward Van Slyke Colonial Chapel.
 
Memorials may be directed to Marcia Volk, in memory of Ralph.
 
Ralph was born June 12, 1924, the son of Samuel and Myrtle (Ellison) Volk, in Steamboat Rock.  He graduated from Steamboat Rock High School and attended AIB College in Des Moines.  Ralph entered the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1946.  He married Marcia Ames on June 30, 1950, in Eldora, and to this union 2 children were born.
 
Ralph worked for Martin Marietta as a superintendent most of his life, and later managed the Thornton City Park for Cerro Gordo County for 13 years.
 
Ralph was known as a master tinkerer, but the main joy of his life was his family, especially his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.  He was a devoted father, grandfather and great grandfather who loved when his grandchildren would come visit him.
Ralph was a lifetime member of the V.F.W., and a member of the Disabled Vets of America.
 
He is survived by his wife, Marcia, Clear Lake, his daughter Susan (Michael) Janka, Clear Lake, grandchildren Hillary Janka, Clear Lake, Craig (Nicole) Volk, Lakeville, Minn., Kristin (Aaron) Anderson, Waverly, Ryan (Kristin) Volk, Altoona and Holli Gorman, New Hampton, step grandsons Jason (Mandy) Janka, Curlew, IA, Jeremy Janka, Clarion, great grandchildren Reece Volk, Trice Anderson and Caleb Volk, step great grandchildren Jordyn Janka, Jason Green, Jordan Green, Jade Green and Jacob Green, several nieces and nephews, and extended family members Jim (Janet) Gorman, New Hampton.
 
Ralph was preceded in death by his parents, his son Timothy Craig Volk who died in 1983, his mother and father-in-law, and his grandparents.


Louise Kapler

Alta Vista, Iowa -

    Louise Kapler, 93, of Fort Atkinson, died Wednesday, Dec. 30, at Winneshiek Medical Center, Decorah.
     Louise Magdalene Huber Kapler was born on October 29, 1916, the daughter of George C. and Rose (Klimesh) Huber, on the Michael Huber farm west of Spillville.  She attended St. Wenceslaus Grade School and graduated from Decorah High School in 1935.  She received her training in elementary education at Luther College and Upper Iowa University attending school nights and summers, graduating in 1968.  She did post graduate work at the University of Northern Iowa, Winona State College and the University of Iowa.  She started her teaching career in rural schools, and later taught in the Fort Atkinson Public School.  She taught in the Turkey Valley School District from 1960 until 1981 when she retired after a 43-year teaching career.
     Through her retirement, although no longer in the classroom, her passion to teach continued as she created lesson plans for her grandchildren and instilled in them her great love and respect for nature.
     Some of her adventures included hitchhiking to Yellowstone National Park, attending the 1939 World’s Fair in Chicago and driving her Harley Davidson motorcycle to Fort Knox, Kentucky in 1943 to visit Norbert where he was stationed while in the Army.  She also found joy in fishing, bowling, playing softball, and baking the greatest zelniky known to man.
      Louise  married  Norbert Kapler on June 1, 1942 by Rev. John Chihak in St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church.  Together they farmed the Huber family farm west of Spillville.  Louise was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville and the Iowa State Teachers Association.
     Louise is survived by her husband: Norbert Kapler, Fort Atkinson. daughter: Lori (Roger) Shatek, Fort Atkinson.  Five grandchildren: Leah (Joe) Knutson; Neil Shatek, Katie Shatek, Paul Shatek and Alex Shatek.  One great grandchild: EllieRose Louise Knutson.  One sister-in-law: Zenetta Eckerman, Hudson.  Two brothers-in-law: Francis Kapler, Maryland and Clem Kapler, Cresco.
     Louis was preceded in death by her parents: George and Rose (Klimesh) Huber. Three sisters: Henrietta (Chuck) Pochobradsky, Evelyn (Clarence) Hayek and Gladys (Edward) Wagner.  One brother: George (Rita) Huber. Brother-in-law: Urban (Margaret) Fitzpatrick. One sister-in-law: Sister Elwyn Kapler.


Marlene M. McDonnough

Stewartville -

Marlene M. McDonnough, 73 of Stewartville Minn., died Friday, Jan. 1, following a short illness, at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester where she was a patient for one week. Funeral services were Monday, Jan. 4, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Bernard's Catholic Church, Stewartville. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Chatfield, Minn.

Marlene M. Erickson was born Jan. 17, 1936 to Kenneth and Audriene (Eggenberger) Erickson in St. Paul, Minn. She grew up in Lake City, Minn. where she attended St. Mary's Parochial School and graduated from Lake City High School. She was married May 2, 1955 in Lake City to Dewey K. Partello. Following their marriage the couple lived Killen, Texas where Mr. Partello was serving in the U.S. Army. After his discharge they moved to a farm in rural Stewartville. Mr. Partello died August 18, 1988. Marlene was married in May of 1990 to John McDonnough at St. Bernards Catholic Church in Stewartville and they lived on the farm in rural Stewartville. Mr. McDonnough died in Dec. of 1999. Marlene moved to the cottages of Stewartville where she lived until her recent illness. She was a member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Stewartville, Stewartville American Legion Auxiliary, V.F.W. Auxiliary and Paternal Order of the Eagles Club.  She enjoyed her home, friends and family.

Survivors include a daughter Barb (Joe) Thraenert of Elma; three grandchildren Emily (David) Smith and Eric Thraenert both of New Hampton, Andy and special friend Kally of Rochester, Minn., two great-grandchildren Taryn and Camryn Smith. She was preceded in death by her husbands Dewy and John and special friend Les Wernimont in 2007, her parents and son Michael.  


Frances Shannon

New Hampton, Iowa -

Frances M. “Fran” Shannon, 82 of New Hampton, died Thursday, Jan. 07, at New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

A Mass of Christian Burial was 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 11, at Holy Family Parish – St. Joseph Center, New Hampton with Monsignor+
 Carl Schmitt celebrating the Mass. The pall will be placed by her four children Lector for the service will be Tara Patrie. Organist will be Ann Bennett with Shawnessey & Stephaine Lau, cantors, accompanying the Holy Family Resurrection Choir. The offertory gifts will be presented by Caleb Ulrichs, Keegan Ulrichs, Rylie Patrie, Tori Ulrichs, and Jack Northrup.

Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, New Hampton with Nathan Northrup, Ryan Shannon, Jon Shannon, Jeff Ulrichs, Josh Patrie, Joe Baron, Kirk Grandstrand, and Sam Boos serving as pallbearers. Grant Stroughton will be an honorary pallbearer.

Friends called 4 - 7 p.m. Sunday at Hugeback and Chenoweth Funeral Home, New Hampton where there was a 5:30 p.m. Scripture Service. Visitation continued one hour prior to the service at the church. 

Frances M. “Fran” Shannon was born in Elma, on June 25, 1927, the daughter of Frank and Florence (Roche) Riley. She attended Immaculate Conception Academy in Elma graduating in 1945. Fran was united in marriage to Paul Shannon on November 10, 1947, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in St. Cecelia. The couple lived in New Hampton and to this union four children were born. Fran was employed at St. Joseph’s Hospital, the former Latours Apparel in New Hampton, and the Canteen Services at Sara Lee for 18 years. Paul died on May 17, 2001 at the age of 77.

Fran enjoyed baking for her children and grandchildren. She loved spending time with her girlfriends in the Birthday Club. She was a member of Holy Family Rosary Society and Mercy Medical Center Auxiliary.

Survivors include three sons, Terry (Vonnie) Shannon of New Hampton, Tom (Cindy) Shannon of Rochester, Minn., and Steve (Jean) Shannon of Charles City; one daughter, Maureen (Brad) Northrup of Hastings, Minn; nine grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; one brother, Lee (Veronica) Riley of Charles City, and one brother-in-law, Bob Boos of New Hampton; two sister-in-laws Jean Shannon of New Hampton and Marge (Gerald) Gansen of Elma.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Paul, three brothers, Joe Riley, Gerald Riley and Paul Riley; four sisters, Bernice Showalter, Marion Ales, Grace Riley, and Helen Riley.

Leonard V. Lukes

Protivin, Iowa -

Leonard V. Lukes, 93 of Protivin, died Thursday afternoon, Jan. 7, at Gunderson Hospital, LaCrosse, Wisc.

A Mass of Christian Burial was 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 11, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Protivin with interment in the church cemetery.

Friends called 3 - 7 p.m. Sunday at Hugeback’s Protivin Funeral Home, Protivin, where there was a 4 p.m. Knights of Columbus Rosary and a 6:00 p.m. Scripture Service. Visitation continued 8 - 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Maurice Edward Peters

New Hampton, Iowa -

Maurice (Maury) Edward Peters, 76, passed away January 13, at his home in Chula Vista, California, with his family at his side.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, at the Hugeback and Chenoweth Funeral Home in New Hampton. Interment with military honors will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Friends may call beginning 9 a.m. Saturday, January 23, at the funeral home. 

Maurice (Maury) Edward Peters was born to Clarence and Margaret (Ball) Peters in New Hampton, October 5, 1933. Maurice married Maria Louisa Alvarez on February 23, 1973, in Chula Vista, California. After retiring from the US Navy, Maury and Maria returned to Chula Vista and purchased their home, staying close to their children and their families.

Maury grew up in New Hampton during the post-depression years which shaped his character and spawned his powerful work ethic. He graduated from New Hampton High School in 1951. After a brief employment at Rath Packing in Waterloo, he and his brother, Robert, enlisted in the US Navy in 1952. Maurice started his naval career as a ship fitter and attained the highest enlisted rank in his field as a Hull Technician Master Chief Petty Officer. He retired from the Navy after 24 years of service in 1978 and continued working at the Long Beach Naval Ship Yard as a project foreman until 1990.

His family held him in high regard and saw him as a hard worker and a very giving and caring human being. He was an extremely loyal family person. His passions were his family, his rose bushes, and his fruit trees, to which he devoted much care and love. He will be greatly missed by all.

He is survived by his wife, Maria; four step children, Cesar, Linda, Tom, and Dolores; six grand children, Clyde, Eric, Rich, Inga, Rocky, and Melina; nine great grand children, Kayla, Alysa, Savannah, Alixis, Madison, Cassidy, Megan, Zachary, and Michael; and his brother Larry (Chris) Peters.

Maury was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Margaret; and his siblings, Robert, Rose Ann, and Vern.

Allen P. Shinstine

New Hampton, Iowa -

Allen P. “Al” Shinstine, 74, of Cedar Falls, formerly New Hampton, died Friday, Jan. 15, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics, Iowa City. 

He was born June 8, 1935 at Boyd,  the son of Paul A. and Alveda (Pitz) Shinstine.  Al married Mary K. Boehmer on September 2, 1958 at Charles City.  He was a 1953 graduate of New Hampton High School, attended the University of Northern Iowa, and graduated from the Business Institute of Technology in Cedar Falls.  Al served in the United States Army and was an accountant at Clay Equipment Company and Roberts Home Decorating, retiring in 1991.  He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and was a fourth degree knight with the St. Patrick Knights of Columbus.  Al was the founder and honorary board member of the Knights of Columbus National Softball Tournament and founder of the Knights of Columbus State Spelling Bee, Basketball Free Throw Tournament, and State Softball Tournament.  He was past President of Mended Hearts and past District Deputy of the Knights of Columbus.
 
Survivors include his wife, Mary Shinstine, of Cedar Falls; three daughters, Colleen Shinstine of Des Moines, Virginia “Gin” Garbes of Cedar Falls and Kathleen “Kathy” Burnell of Waterloo; four sons, Gregory “Greg” (Kathryn) Shinstine of Waterloo, Paul Shinstine of Paola, Kansas, William “Bill” (Felita) Shinstine of Kansas City, Missouri and Richard “Rick” Shinstine of Waterloo; twelve grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
 
Al was preceded in death by his parents, his mother and father-in-law, and his beloved pet Beagle, Marty.
 
Services will be 10:30 am Wednesday, Jan. 20, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, with burial at Greenwood Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls.  Military honors will be conducted by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49.  Visitation will be 4-6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, where a 6:30 p.m. Vigil Service and a 7 p.m. Knights of Columbus Rosary Service will be conducted.  Visitation also one hour before service at the church.  Memorials may be directed to Sartori Memorial Hospital or the Univ. of Iowa ICU or Renal Transplant Depts.

Richard K. Samec

New Hampton, Iowa -

Richard K. Samec, 62, of New Hampton, died Wednesday, January 20, at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton, after a short battle with lung cancer.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 25, at Holy Family Parish-St. Mary’s Center, New Hampton with Monsignor Carl Schmitt celebrating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, New Hampton with John Northness, Jason Northness, Troy Wilkes, LeRoy Wilkes, Curtis Wilkes and Kenneth Hammell serving as casket bearers. Honorary casket bearers will be Alan Hammell, Chad Shoars, Chris Shoars, Joleen Pietro, Julie Romeo and Connie Hammell.  Military rites will be provided by the American Legion Fae Stine Post 38.                    

Visitation will be Sunday, Jan. 24, from 4-7 p.m. at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home, New Hampton with a 6 p.m. scriptural wake service. Visitation will continue at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Monday. 

Richard Kenneth Samec was born on October 14, 1947 to Joseph and Bertha (Christenson) Samec in New Hampton. Rich graduated from New Hampton High School in 1966. He worked for Super Value in New Hampton for 28 years, working for Wendell Liddle and later Matt Anderson. Rich worked for Ameritec in Fredericksburg and most recently was employed by Featherlite Trailers of Cresco for 18 years. In January of 1968 Rich was inducted into the US Army serving his country in Italy. He was honorably discharged from the army in December of 1969. On June 13, 1970 Rich was united in marriage to Joeleen Thome at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage.

Rich enjoyed hunting, fishing, and in later years he enjoyed metal detecting and was an avid gardener. He loved spending time with family and friends. Rich and Joeleen enjoyed vacations to Memphis, TN visiting Elvis’s Home, Nashville, TN, Black Hills, SD, Colorado and many bus trips to Branson, MO. Rich was always very positive and had a smile and laugh for everyone. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Rich is survived by his wife of 39 years Joeleen Samec of New Hampton; three children Jerry Richard Samec of New Hampton, Randy Brian Samec of Janesville and Jill Marie Samec of Mason City;  three sisters Eleanor Wilkes of Waterloo, Ruth (John) Northness of Waterloo, Hazel (Kenneth) Hammell of Wapello; a sister-in-law Deanna (Mike) Shoars of Orchard; and several nieces and nephews

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law Charles Wilkes.

George H. DeVries

George H. DeVries, 94 of Waverly, formerly of Plainfield died Monday, Jan. 18, at  Waverly Health Center.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 22, at the First Baptist Church, Plainfield with internment in Willow Lawn Cemetery, Plainfield.

Agnes Langreck

New Hampton, Iowa

Agnes Langreck, 97, of Calmar, died on Tuesday, Jan. 19, at her home. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 23, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Calmar. Burial will be in St. Luke’s Catholic Cemetery, St. Lucas. Friends may call from 2 - 7 p.m.  Friday at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, French Chapel, Calmar, and after 10 a.m. at the church  Saturday morning. There will be a rosary at 4 p.m. Friday afternoon at the funeral home. Agnes Elizabeth (Brincks) Langreck was born on August 24, 1912, in Ossian, to Bernard and Susan (Weber) Brincks. She attended country school and later the Catholic School in Ossian. Agnes worked at the New Hampton Hospital for several years until her marriage to Edward Langreck on August 28, 1934, at St. Francis DeSales Catholic Church in Ossian. To this union, four children were born. Ed and Agnes farmed near St. Lucas, until 1978, when they retired and moved to Calmar. Agnes was a devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She enjoyed baking bread and cookies, making sequined calendars, doing word searches and playing cards. She treasured all of her family. Agnes was a member of the St. Aloysius Catholic Church and Rosary Society. Agnes’ survivors include her daughter: Darlene Elsbernd, Calmar. Two sons: Gerald “Jerry” (Diane) Langreck, Calmar, and William “Bill” (Kathy) Langreck, West Union. One daughter-in-law: Joyce Langreck, Decorah. Nineteen grandchildren: Jeannie (Don) Boyer, Don (Trish) Elsbernd, Geri Elsbernd, Terry (Jane) Elsbernd, Joe (Kathy) Elsbernd, Randy (Becky) Elsbernd, Dean (Julie) Elsbernd, Arlyn Elsbernd, Sherri (Jason) Carolan, Kevin (Dawn) Langreck, Kerry (Ann Brown) Langreck, Kraig (Brenda) Langreck, Kelly (Becky) Langreck, Brian (Kelly Cox) Cook, Christine (Chad Bakken) Langreck, James Langreck, Michael (Margaret) Langreck, Daniel Langreck, and Mary Langreck. Agnes was preceded in death by her parents: Bernard and Susan (Weber) Brincks. Her husband: Edward Langreck on February 16, 1996. Her son: LaVern Langreck on June 29, 1984. Her son-in-law: Paul Elsbernd on March 13, 1997. Her sisters and brothers-in-law: Matilda (Ray) Hackman and Lorraine (Joe) Weiglein. Her brothers and sister-in-law: William (Cecelia) Brincks, Alphonse Brincks, Cletus Brincks and Gregory Brincks as a infant. Her father and mother-in-law: Herman and Rose Langreck. Mildred B. Nosbisch

New Hampton, Iowa

Mildred B. Nosbisch, 93, of New Hampton, died on Thursday, January 21, at New Hampton Care Center, New Hampton. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 26, at Holy Family Parish-St. Mary’s Center, New Hampton with Monsignor. Carl Schmitt and Father Marvin Salz celebrating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, New Hampton with Cory McDonald, Brian McDonald, Bill Edgar, Jason Gamble, Paul Schmitz, Nyle Nosbisch, Tom Schmitz, and Mitch Nosbisch serving as casket bearers. Honorary casket bearers will be Ella Mae Rankin, Charlotte Hollis, Lavonne Rosonke, Ethel O’Byrne, Lorna Gorman, Ralph Rausch, Francis Kramer, Paul Schwickerath, Dick White, Bob Kramer, and Don Kubesh.   Visitation will be on Monday, January 25, from 4-8 p.m. at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home, New Hampton with a rosary at 4:30 and a 7 p.m. scriptural wake service. Visitation will continue at the funeral home one hour prior to the service Tuesday.  Mildred B. Ungs was born on July 3, 1916 to Michael and Elizabeth (Rausch) Ungs near North Washington, IA.  She attended St. Mary’s School in North Washington.  Mildred was a maid for families in the area.  On December 28, 1937 Mildred was united in marriage to Victor Nosbisch at Immaculate Conception Church in North Washington.  The couple farmed together in the North Washington area until 1960, when they moved to New Hampton.  Mildred was a cook for Holly’s Café in New Hampton, as well as, New Hampton Community School.  Mildred enjoyed her plants, flower gardens, collecting dolls, many crafts, crocheting, and cake decorating.  She especially enjoyed good times with her family, playing cards with her sisters, and cooking.  Mildred volunteered at the New Hampton Care Center for several years.  She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, and Holy Family Rosary Society. Mildred is survived by her six children Carol Schmitz of New Hampton, Ron Nosbisch of Mesa, AZ, Sharon (Mac) McDonald of New Hampton, Jean Wiltse of New Hampton, Phyllis Nosbisch of Wheeling, Ill, and Steve (Maryanne) Nosbisch of Larkspur, CO; 16 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great grandchildren; two sisters Luella Lentz of New Hampton, and Edna Long of New Hampton; a brother-in-law Dale Gates of New Hampton; a sister-in-law Mel Ungs of New Hampton; and numerous nieces and nephews. Marie Ann Griffin, 48 of Charles City, died Friday, Jan. 22, at the Muse-Norris Hospice, Mason City.

Joan Alice Smith

New Hampton, Iowa

Joan Alice Smith, 76 of New Hampton, died Monday evening, Jan. 25, at New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, New Hampton. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday Feb. 2, at Trinity Lutheran Church, New Hampton with Pastor Kevin Frey officiating. The pall will be placed by Joan’s four children. Crossbearers will be Chianne Eischeid and Dalton Eischeid. Interment will be in the New Hampton City Cemetery with Joan’s grandsons, Robert Finnegan, Garrett Testroet, Lance Testroet, Logan Smith, Taylor Smith and her nephews, Chris Ostland and Brian Loes as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Joan’s granddaughters, Lori Eischeid, Karrey Smith, Danielle Testroet, MacKenzie Smith and Courtney Ball. Friends may call from 4 - 7 p.m. Monday at Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home, New Hampton. Further visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.  Joan Alice Smith was born January 4, 1934, in Charles City, the daughter of Glen and Irene (Ellis) Springer. She received her education in Charles City. On June 6, 1951, Joan was united in marriage to Gilbert Frank Smith of Nashua. To this union four children were born, three daughters and one son. Joan worked seventeen years, for Hillandale Farms of New Hampton, before retiring. She then joined her husband Frank in over-the-road trucking, until his retirement. Frank died in May of 1992 at the age of 59. Joan enjoyed baking and was a good cook. She loved doing things for others but the time she was able to spend with her family was the most special of all. Joan is survived by her son, Doug (Linda) Smith of Cresco; three daughters, Linda (Tom) Finnegan of Tucson, AZ, Terry (Gary) Ball of Harrison, TN and Peg (Dan) Testroet of New Hampton; ten grandchildren, Robert (Roxanne) Finnegan, Garrett Testroet, Lance Testroet, Logan Smith, Taylor Smith, Lori (Tony) Eischeid, Karrey Smith, Danielle Testroet, MacKenzie Smith and Courtney Ball; five great-grandchildren, Dalton Eischeid, Chianne Eischeid, Autumn Delacruz, Kyle Delacruz and Damian Valenzuela; one brother, Glen (Nancy) Springer of Lansing. Lavonne Troyna

New Hampton, Iowa -

Lavonne Troyna, 75, of New Hampton, died on Wednesday, Jan. 27,  of cancer at her home surrounded by her family.

Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, at Trinity Lutheran Church, New Hampton, with Pastor Kevin Frey officiating.  Burial will be at New Hampton Cemetery, New Hampton with her grandchildren, Cory Troyna, Ryan Troyna, Jason Troyna, Lindsey Troyna, Tiffany Troyna, Jenny Troyna, Brian Uglum, Stephanie Coyle, Derek Rogers, Amanda Olmstead , and John Kleinschmidt serving as casket bearers.

Visitation will be on Friday, Jan. 29,  from 4-8 p.m. at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home, New Hampton. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the service on Saturday. 

Lavonne May Hahn was born on May 24, 1934 in Chickasaw County to Emil and Selma (Schneider) Hahn, the third of four children.  She was united in marriage to David D. Troyna on December 12, 1950, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.  Lavonne spent most of her life in Waterloo and New Hampton.  She worked as a welder at Hinson Manufacturing in Cedar Falls, at a grocery store in Waterloo, as well as Bennett Pharmacy and Liddle’s Super Value in New Hampton.  Lavonne also baked wedding cakes and made wedding apparel.  She served as commissioner of the Department of Natural Resources under Governor Terry Branstad, as well as serving on the DNR Board for nine years until 1999.  Lavonne was also the past president of Women’s Duck Unlimited of Chickasaw County.  After 32 years of farming, Lavonne and David retired in 1996.

Lavonne enjoyed hunting, fishing (especially trout fishing and showing her children how to catch them), as well as playing cards, and spending time with her family.

Lavonne is survived by her mother Selma Hahn of New Hampton, her husband David of New Hampton, eight children, Rick (Cindy) Troyna of Raymond, Kathy (Riley) Uglum of New Hampton, Peggy (Bob Cline) of Nashua, Donna Troyna of Danville, Calif., Daniel (Barb) Troyna of Allison, Dennis Troyna of New Hampton, Barb (Dana) Boomgarden of Anoka, Minn. and Karen (Tim) Rogers of Meridian, ID; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and two brothers Lloyd (Mary) Hahn of Fairbanks, and Jerry (Bonnie) Hahn of Cedar Falls
.

She is preceded in death by her father Emil Hahn, one brother Edwin Hahn, who was killed in Korea, and one grandchild Kelly Foster.
