Florian Hackman dies at 87

Florian F. Hackman, age 87 of New Hampton, Iowa died Thursday, December 30, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 4, 2011, at Holy Family Parish – St. Mary’s Center, New Hampton. Rev. Mark Osterhaus and Msgr. Carl Schmitt officiating. Interment will be in St. Luke’s Cemetery in St. Lucas.

Friends may greet the family 3:00-8:00 p.m. Monday January 3, 2011, at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in New Hampton where there will be a 4:00 p.m. rosary and a 6:00 p.m. scripture service. Florian Francis Hackman was born April 27, 1923, on the family farm near St. Lucas, the son of Joseph and Theresa (Schmitt) Hackman. He attended St. Lukes grade school in St. Lucas. On October 11, 1949, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville, he was united in marriage to Lorraine Loesch. To this union, nine children were born. The couple farmed in the St. Lucas area for 44 years until retiring in New Hampton in 1993.

Florian enjoyed getting together with his family and playing cards. During retirement he could be found watching a baseball game or putting together puzzles. He was a member of the St. Luke’s Parish, St. Mary’s Parish, and the Catholic Order of the Foresters in St. Lucas.

Florian is survived by his wife of 61 years, Lorraine; three sons Robert (Laurine) Hackman of Lawler, Larry Hackman (Cynthia Hartman) of Calmar, Mark (Janet) Hackman of Omaha, NE; five daughters, Karen Hackman of New Hampton, Linda DeRudder of Prairie DuChein, WI, Marie (Allen) Kuennen of Maynard, Diane Hackman (Dale Tenge) of Bassett, Lois (Jeff) Anderson of Mason City; one brother, Joe (Agnes) Hackman of Fort Atkinson; one sister, Dorothy Bohach of Spillville; a sister-in-law, Darlyne Hackman of Decorah; 11 grandchildren, Louie DeRudder Jr, Florian DeRudder, Andrew Hackman, Kyle Kuennen, Tyler Hackman, Bryan Hackman, Brady Anderson, Lori (Darrell) Sinclair, Emily Hackman, Lindsay Kuennen, and Leslie DeRudder; one step-grandson, Roger Elsbernd; two great grandsons, Hayden Sinclair and Brice Krachey; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Francis in infancy, four brothers, Alphonse, Leo, Anslem and Jerome Hackman; one sister, Margaret Wenthold.


Leone Roberson dies at 84

Leone D. Roberson age 84 of New Hampton died Thursday morning, December 30, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 3, 2011, at the Jerico Lutheran Church, rural Lawler, with Pastor Daniel Larson officiating. Nadine Schumacher will be the organist accompanying the congregation singing, “Behold A Host Arrayed In White”, “How Great Thou Art” and “I’m But A Stranger Here, Heaven Is My Home” sung by Pastor Daniel Larson.

Interment will be in the church cemetery with Alan Weber, Bryan Sheehy, John Pose, Duane Boos, William Haugen and Robert Roberson. Honorary pallbearers will be Harlan and Betty Pose, Jay and Eileen Roberson, LaVerne and Mary Nelson, Bruce and Janine Babcock and Paul Johnson.

Leone Denise Roberson was born March 2, 1926, in rural Chickasaw County, IA, the daughter of Theodore and Marie (Anderson) Haugen. She was baptized on March 28, 1926, and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith on March 17, 1940, at the Saude Immanuel Lutheran Church. Leone attended rural country schools in Howard County and in her later life received her G.E.D. On January 29, 1946, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Saude, she was united in marriage to Orville Roberson. The couple farmed in Chickasaw County until 1986 when they moved to New Hampton. Orville died on October 3, 2008, at the age of 87.

Leone had been employed at the former J.C. Penny Store in New Hampton. From 1960 until retiring, Leone also worked at part time at Qually Produce, The Chestnut Tree Gift Shop and Wilshire Jewelry, all in New Hampton.

Survivors include three brothers, John (Cyrilla) Haugen of Waterloo, Karl Haugen of Cedar Falls and Willis (Mary Jo) Haugen of Seattle, WA; two sisters, Joanne (Joe) Sheehy of New Hampton and Nancy (Robert) Jackson of LaPorte City, IA; many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Orville; and three brothers, Davis Haugen in 1987, Wallace Haugen at the age of four and Daniel Haugen in infancy.


Anna J. Usher dies at 95

Anna J. Usher, age 95, of Nashua, died Thursday morning, December 30, 2010, at the Cedar Vale Assisted Living.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday January 4, 2011, at the United Methodist Church in Nashua with interment in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City.

Mary Ann Patricia Crandall dies at 68

Mary Ann Patricia (Radloff Howard) Crandall, age 68 of New Hampton, died Friday, Dec. 31, 2010, at St. Lukes Hospital in Cedar Rapids from complications associated with ovarian cancer.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Jan.13, 2010, at Holy Family Parish-St. Joseph Center, New Hampton with Father Mark Osterhaus officiating.

Friends may greet the family 8 - 10 a.m., Thursday, at the Gathering Space at St. Joseph Center.

Interment will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery (Paint Rock) in Harpers Ferry, at a later date. Mary Ann chose this spot as she will join four previous generations of her family in quiet rest on the hill beside the banks of the mighty Mississippi. Honorary pallbearers are HB Hill, DJ Nunley, Javad Hosseini, and Pete Wright.

Mary Ann Crandall was born on March 17, 1942, in Volga City, the daughter of Owen and Mary (Daman) Radloff. She graduated from Volga High School in 1959.

Nothing meant more to Mary Ann than her family. During her life, she took care of others regardless of the personal sacrifices. She was caretaker and protector of her sister, Maureen. She raised her four daughters on her own. She also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a strong guiding force in their lives and will be missed dearly.

Mary Ann was dedicated to public service and spent most of her work life helping people. She was an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) for the Floyd County ambulance service, Dispatcher and Jailer at the Chickasaw County Sheriff’s office in New Hampton, Chickasaw County Civil Defense Director, and she taught CPR classes for the American Red Cross.

Mary Ann was a great cook. She enjoyed collecting and reading cookbooks and held several positions over the years cooking for others including working at Pam’s Diner and Raleigh Hill Golf Course.

In her leisure, Mary Ann enjoyed gardening, quilting, crafting, antiquing, genealogy, reading, and volunteering with the Chickasaw County Pioneer Cemetery Commission.

Survivors include her four daughters, Julie Hill of New Hampton, Jeanne Nunley of Iowa City, Jody (Javad Hosseini) Howard of Peoria, Ill., and Jannine (Peter) Wright of Eden, VT; her seven grandchildren, Marissa (Jacob Bucknell) Hill, Herbert (HB) (Samantha Boos) Hill, Amber Hill, Ciarra Hill, Brianna Hill, Natassia (Derek) White, Donald (DJ) Nunley; and her 2 great-grandchildren, Isabella Taylor and Braxston Bucknell; her sister, Maureen Radloff of Waukon; her nephew, Kyle Donahue of Marshalltown; and by Miss Fluff, her very moody cat.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her son-in-law, Herbert Hill.

The family would like to extend their appreciation to the compassionate and caring people who supported Mary Ann during her illness at the New Hampton Hospital, Allen Memorial Hospital, University of Iowa Hospital, and St. Luke’s Continuing Care Hospital.


Lance Michael Langreck dies at 3

Lance Michael Langreck, age 3, of Lawler died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2011 at his home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 10, 2011, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, Lawler with Rev. Nick March officiating. The pall will be placed by his parents. Lector for the Mass will be John Cuvelier. Presenting the offertory gifts will be Tim Langreck and Nancy Benson. Renae Huinker will be the organist accompanying Lynette Wheeler as cantor.

Interment will be in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Cemetery in Lawler with Tim Langreck, Nancy Benson, Mike Langreck, Kara Hageman, Gretchen Steere, and Ashley Bucheit serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Luke Langreck, Ann Knutson, Andrea Engh, Susan Leibold, Megan Anderson, Susan Smith, Sue Wilcox, Edith Searles, Linda Jencks, Jeanne Rochford, Kathy Stochl, Kris Freitag, Sandy Larson, Lisa Krieg, Martina Tannahill, Erika Loyd, Jessica Wurzer, Raquel Marlow, and St. Mary’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit nurses, doctors, and staff.

Lance Michael Langreck was born February 1, 2007 at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo,the son of Joe and Tina Langreck. Lance spent the first three months and five days of his life in the St. Mary’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in Rochester, Minn. He was born with congenital myotonic dystrophy. Although he was limited in physical ability, Lance could sit up, stand with assistance, and was able to take small steps with the use of a gait trainer. Every week, Lance had physical therapy whether it was with Team Rehab in Decorah, or in his home with assistance from Keystone AEA. Lance was a very happy child despite his many medical troubles that included many trips to the doctor. His favorite movie was Curious George and he loved watching Wheel of Fortune and Elmo’s World on TV. He loved bubbles, music, being in the water, and playing with his best friend and big brother Luke. Throughout his three years and eleven months and six days of life, Lance touched numerous people and will be deeply missed.

Lance is survived by his parents, Joe and Tina Langreck of Lawler; a brother, Luke Langreck; his grandmother, Beverly Roed of Decorah; his grandfather, Ronald (Mary Jane) Michels of Decorah; three uncles, Richard (Honor) Langreck of Lawler, Bruce (Tina) Michels of Decorah, Daniel Michaels of Decorah; five aunts, Eileen (Tom) Carolan of Waucoma, Kathleen (Paul) Gnade of Ft. Atkinson, Shirley Smith of Calmar, Doris Mitchell of Lawler, Tammy Michels of Decorah; and 20 cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Francis (Katherine) Langreck; two uncles, John Langreck and Paul Smith.

Mabel E. Speicher dies at 91

Mabel E. Speicher, 91, of Fredericksburg died Saturday afternoon, Jan. 8, 2001 at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2011 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Fredericksburg with Pastor Ronnie Koch officiating.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Fredericksburg on Tuesday and continue for one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery at Fredericksburg.

Mabel E. Speicher was born on farm near Hawkeye on November 29, 1919, the daughter of Henry and Anna (Begalske) Ungerer. She was baptized and confirmed at the Lutheran Church in Hawkeye. Mabel received her formal education in rural country schools.

She was united in marriage to Leo K. Speicher at the Lutheran Church in Hawkeye on November 26, 1940. To this union two sons were born, Keith & Dean. Mabel and Leo made Fredericksburg their home for the rest of their lives. Mabel worked for Ott & Forsman Produce for a time before becoming a full-time homemaker.

Mabel was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Ladies Aide and American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing cards and was up for a game anytime, she loved gardening and was an avid walker.

Mabel is survived by her sons and their spouses; Keith & Barbara Speicher and Dean & Judy Speicher all of Fredericksburg; her brother, Clarence Ungerer of Taylorville, Ill; two sisters, Clara Lewis of Ft. Collins, Colo. and Elsie Winter of Fredericksburg; five grandchildren, Dena (Tod) Palmer, Jay (Tonya) Speicher, Susan (Johnpaul) Collins, Jill Connell, Karen (Bill) Pitz; nine great-grandchildren, Reagan, Gavin, Lauren & Kiki Connell, Emma & Ella Pitz, Zachary Palmer, Mercedez & Zaine Speicher and Zade Collins.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo K. Speicher on June 12, 1996 and a great-grandson, Ryan Connell.


Glen L. Ketels dies at 81

Glen L. Ketels, 81, of New Hampton, and formerly of Sumner, Frederika, Tripoli and Waterloo, died Saturday, Jan. 8, at the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Glen was born March 21, 1929, in rural Alpha, the son of Peter and Christina Lohmann Ketels. He was baptized in April 1929, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Richfield. He attended rural Alpha schools.

Mr. Ketels was a U.S. Army Corporal and Korean War veteran. He worked for Deere & Company for 32 years, retiring in 1988. He was a beloved uncle to his nephews and a father figure for his great nieces who lost their father and grandfather at very young ages.

He is survived by: two nephews, James (Mary) Ketels of Waterloo; Jerry (Deb) Ketels of Waterloo; four great-nephews Tim (Margo) Ketels of Dyersville; Brad (Gretchen) Ketels of Marion; Jeffrey Ketels (Jessica) of Coralville and Steve Ketels of Iowa City; three great-nieces, Connie (Todd) Murray of Chandler, Ariz., Deborah (Don) Reid of Tempe, Ariz., and Lori Tank-Blackburn of Waterloo.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; two sisters, Margaret Kammeyer and Irene Leistikow; and a brother, Leslie Ketels.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Friday, January 14, 2011, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Fredericksburg, with Rev. Ronnie Koch officiating. Interment will follow at Union Mound Cemetery in Sumner with military rites provided by Thomas E. Woods Post 223, American Legion of Sumner. Public visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, January 13, 2011, at Becker Milnes Funeral Home, Sumner, with family present.

John Spencer Pink dies at 73

John Spencer Pink, 73, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011, peacefully in his home surrounded by loved ones. Spencer made a gift to the medical community by donating his body to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Spencer was born October 26, 1937, in Shelbyville, Ill. He graduated from New Hampton High School, New Hampton, in 1955, received his bachelor’s degree from State Teachers College (now UNI), and did graduate work there and at the University of Iowa. He was awarded a distinguished teacher honor from the University of Iowa in 1991. Upon retirement from the Cedar Rapids Schools district in 1998, he taught part time at Summit Schools.

An avid traveler (all 50 states and 10 foreign countries), prolific photographer and artist, he exhibited work regionally as well as nationally. He was a consummate teacher and a perpetual student, continually enlightening others and learning.

Survivors include a sister, Margaret (Peg) Pink, and an adopted son, Dimitri J. Pink, plus numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Chester John (CJ) Pink, and mother, Phyllis Spencer.

A memorial gathering will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 15, 2011 at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home, 4200 First Avenue NE, Cedar Rapids, IA 52402.

Spencer suggested that those who knew him plant a tree to remember him.

Jean A. Law dies at 89

Jean A. Law, longtime resident of St. Charles, passed away unexpectedly at her home on Friday, January 7, 2011.

She was born Jean Audrey Speedling on May 3, 1921 in Nashua, and grew up in Nashua. Jean attended Cornell College in Mt. Vernon and graduated in 1943 with a B.S. degree in Home Economics. She married Raymond W. Law, Jr. in 1944 and worked as a secretary at the American Medical Association in Chicago until they established their residence in St. Charles in 1947 and started their family.

Jean devoted her life to her family and was active in community events. She was a longtime member of the Baker Memorial Methodist Church and a member of the women’s prayer circle.

As her children grew, she volunteered in the PTA and as a Girl Scout leader and a Cub Scout Den Mother. She was later employed at Delnor Hospital in the Outpatient Clinic.

Jean is survived by her three children, Nancy (Law) Hacker of Vicenza, Italy, Janet (Law) Johnson of Lisle, Illinois, and Raymond W. Law,III of North Aurora, and by two grandchildren, Bethany Hacker of Vicenza Italy, and Ryan Law of North Aurora.

She was preceded in death by her parents Nellie and Floyd Speedling.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday January 14, 2011 at the Moss- Norris Funeral Home, 100 S. 3 St. (three blocks west of the river and one block south of Rt. 64) in St. Charles. Funeral services and interment will be private.

Memorial contributions in Jean’s name may be made to the American Heart Association, the American Diabetes Association, and to Macular Degeneration Research, a program of the American Health Assistance Foundation.

Steve William Klunder dies at 52

Steve William Klunder 52, of Slater, passed away Monday, Jan. 10, 2011.

A visitation was held Thursday evening January 13, at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Slater. Services were held Friday, January 14 at 10 a.m. also at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Burial was in the Willow Lawn Cemetery in Plainfield.

Steve was born August 28, 1958 in Waverly, Iowa the son of Leonard and Myrna (Pagel) Klunder. Steve graduated from Plainfield High school and attended UNI and ISU and worked in road design with the DOT. On February 21, 1996, he married Jill Neubauer in Las Vegas, Nevada. Steve enjoyed hunting and was a member of Ducks Unlimited and Pheasants Forever. He enjoyed golfing and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye and New York Jets fan. Steve also enjoyed spending time with his kids.

He is survived by his parents; wife, Jill Klunder; three children, Chris Hadaway, Kaylee Klunder and Robert Klunder all of Slater; three sisters, Terri Nolting of Cedar Falls, Lori (Mark) Bennett, of Cambridge, and Karla Klunder of Des Moines; one sister in-law, Stacy (Ben) Nading of Ankeny; three nieces and four nephews.

Janice P. Dana, age 70, of New Hampton, Iowa, died on Wednesday, January 12, 2011 at her home in New Hampton.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am on Wednesday, January 19, 2011 at Trinity Lutheran Church in New Hampton with Pastor Kevin Frey officiating. Burial will be held in New Hampton Cemetery at New Hampton.

Janice Pearl Sudhop was born on April 30, 1940 to Louis and Margaret (Hansen) Sudhop in New Hampton, Iowa. Janice attended school in New Hampton before she moved with her family to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1953. She graduated from Upper Darby High School in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania. After her graduation Janice worked in various clerical positions in Philadelphia. Janice returned to New Hampton when she married Richard Dana on October 26, 1985. Janice has continued to live in New Hampton. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and was a 46 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Janice enjoyed her church activities, particularly quilting, visiting with people, and volunteering at area nursing homes where she played the organ for the residents.

Janice is survived by her siblings, Roy (Ann) Haugh of Annapolis, Maryland, Pauline Makamul of San Bernadino, California, Emily Sudhop of New Hampton, Stephen (Delores) Sudhop of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Peter (Sharon) Sudhop of Lansdowne, Pennsylvania; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Richard in 1998.


Lavane G. Smith dies at 84

Lavane G. Smith, age 84 of rural Ionia died Friday January 14, 2011, at Waverly Health Center.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 19, 2011, at the Frederika Methodist Church with Pastor Sheryl Hull officiating. Janice Edson will sing “In the Sweet Bye and Bye” and “Rock of Ages” and will be accompanied by organist Betty Schmudlach. "Amazing Grace" will be sang by the congregation.

Friends may greet the family from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 18, 2011, at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua. Visitation will continue an hour prior to the service Wednesday at the church in Frederika.

Interment will be in the Allison City Cemetery in Allison with Norris Smith, Noren Smith, Les Parker, Leon Harms, Bill Kurth, Steve Smith, Rob Everhard, and John McCarville serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Kevin Monnier and Dennis Niemeyer.

Lavane George Smith was born April 29, 1926, on the family farm in rural Butler County, the son of Carl and Maude (Burbridge) Smith. He attended Brushy Mound School in Butler County and Richland Township Country School. He graduated from Frederika High School in 1943.

Lavane worked side by side with his father on the family farm. When his father was no longer able to farm, he started working at Terex in Waverly. He held this job for over twenty years and lived at home and took care of his parents in their later years. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed growing flowers. He always took very good care of the farm cats and dogs. He loved watching all sports and would travel aroundNortheast Iowa to watch high school and college teams play. He took great pride in his yard, and mowed many acres of grass on his farm. He loved to share his produce with friends, neighbors, and his family.

Lavane was baptized as an adult and was a member of the Frederika Methodist Church. He was very active in his congregation and served on the Staff Pastor Parish Relations Committee.

Lavane is survived by two brothers, Carl Smith of Waverly, Darwin Smith of Nashua; one sister, Leatrice Einck of Nashua; 12 nieces and nephews; 19 great-nieces and nephews; and many great-great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Marva Alice; a brother, Norman Smith; four sisters-in-law, Vivian Smith, Alice Smith, Janina Smith, and Leona Smith; and one brother-in-law, Wayne Einck.


Ethel Irene Briggs, dies at 97

Jim Zimmerman dies at 74

Jim L. Zimmerman, 74, of New Hampton, passed away at his home on Sunday, Jan. 16, 2011. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, January 22, 2011 at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in New Hampton. Iowa Cremation is assisting the family.

Jim Lowell Zimmerman was born on January 17, 1936 in Elma, to Maynard and Frances Walker Zimmerman. Jim graduated high school in 1955 in Colwell. He married Lois Ingersoll in 1957 and together they had 4 children: Kathi, Bryan, Linda, and Laurie. Jim later married LaVonne on May 28, 1983 in New Hampton. He worked for White Farm for 28 years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, and farmers market with his wife. He also enjoyed the Casino with his wife and friends. He was loved very much, will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Robert 'Robob' Adams, dies at 48

Robert “Robob” Adams age 48 of New Hampton died Monday, Jan. 17, 2011, in New Hampton.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 21, 2010, at Holy Family Parish-St. Joseph Center, New Hampton with Rev. Mark Osterhaus celebrating the Mass. Private family interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, New Hampton.

Friends may greet the family 3 - 8 p.m. Thursday, January 20, 2011, at Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in New Hampton where there will be a 6 p.m. scripture service. Visitation continues an hour prior to the Mass at church on Friday.

Robert “Robob” Adams was born October 9, 1962, in New Hampton the son of Stephen L. “Boobie” and Edna Mae (Babcock) Adams. He received his education in New Hampton and was a graduate of the Class of 1981. On June 28, 1985, at St. Joseph Church, New Hampton, he married Renae Matthews. To this union two children were born. The family moved to Las Vegas in 1987 where he worked at Phillips Supper Club and the Food For Less grocery store. The couple later divorced. Bob moved back to New Hampton where he worked for Beatrice in Fredericksburg and had currently been working at Tri-Mark in New Hampton. In his free time he loved playing Texas Hold’em, spending time with friends, family, especially his grandchildren. He loved being a grandpa and a Green Bay Packer fan.

Survivors include his one daughter, RaeAnn Shoars of Waverly; three grandchildren, Cadence Piersol, Harleigh Piersol, Royce Shoars; four sisters, Roxanne (Bruce) Gabrinski of Webster, Wisc, Mary “Toots” Adams (Pete Nehls) of New Hampton, Sue (Andy) Matthews of Nashua, Michelle (Digger) White of Alta Vista.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Ryan in 2007; brother-in-law, Dean Peters and a great-niece, Remie Peyton.


John Clifford Smith III, dies at 44

John Clifford Smith III, 44, of Charleston, S.C., passed away at his residence on Friday, Jan. 14, 2011.

John was born in New Hampton, on August 31, 1966 to John and Shelly Smith and was a 1984 graduate of New Hampton High School. He served in the US Navy from 1984 to 1987 and was a 1999 graduate of Augusta State University. He followed in his father’s profession as a building contractor in the Charleston area.

Survivors include daughters Alexiss and Rylee Smith; father, John C. Smith of Augusta, Ga; sisters, Sabrina Smith of Knoxville, Tenn., Shannon Smith of Augusta, Ga. and close friends Sherry Slaminko of Augusta, Ga. and Patty Crafts of Charleston, S.C.

A memorial service will be held on January 25, 2011 at Mize Methodist Church, 302 Barrow Drive in Augusta, Ga. at 1 p. m. The family requests that memorial donations be sent to the American Heart Association.

John’s fun-loving spirit earned him many friends. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Christine J. (Haag) Hvitved dies at 92

Christine J. (Haag) Hvitved, 92, died Thursday morning, Jan. 20, 2011 at Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly, where she has been lovingly cared for during the past eight years.

Chapel services for Christine will be held Wednesday, January 26, 2011, 11 a.m.., at Good Shepherd Chapel at Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community, Waverly. A light lunch will follow. No public visitation will be held.

Interment of her ashes will be laid to rest at Oak Hill Cemetery in Nashua, at a later date.

Christine Josephine Haag was born November 28, 1918, at home in Nashua, the daughter of John Batiste and Elizabeth (Felton) Haag. She graduated from Nashua High School in 1936 and worked at the Charles Theater, Charles City, where she met her husband, Niels. They were married on January 5, 1942, and moved to Baltimore, Md., during which time Chris was employed by Sears. Following Niels' discharge from the Navy, the couple returned to Nashua and joined the family hardware business. Niels and Chris bought the business in 1951 and they later built a new Gamble's Store. Chris was an equal partner in the business and worked every day at the store while maintaining a home and raising their family. She enjoyed her family and many outdoor activities including boating and water skiing on Cedar Lake, bird watching, golfing, and vacationing at the family cabin in Minnesota. Chris was also known for her ceramic works and talent as a seamstress. Chris was an active member of St. John Lutheran Church and shared her love of music by singing in the choir.

Christine is survived by her daughter, Sandra (Tom) Kolodziej of Nashua, a son Linn (Connie) Hvitved of Cresco; two grandchildren Angela (Damian Dalle Nogare) of Bethesda, Md., and Aaron (Missy) of Cresco; two great-granddaughters, Maryn and Brynlie Hvitved of Cresco; and two sisters, Garland (Don) Jensen of Charles City, and Marian Hannemann of Nashua.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 2005, her parents, and three sisters, Margaret Ransom, Susie Monroe and Mary Jean Haag.

The family suggests Memorials be directed to Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly or Cedar Valley Hospice.

Lucille B. Brown, age 81, of New Hampton, died on Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011 at New Hampton Care Center in New Hampton.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 26, 2011 at Holy Family Parish - St. Joseph’s Center in New Hampton with Father Mark Osterhaus celebrating the mass. Lucille Barbara Miller was born on April 16, 1929 to Nick and Dorothy (Schmitz) Miller on a farm near Ionia. Lucille attended St. Mary’s School in North Washington and graduated in 1946. She was united in marriage to Delmer F. Brown on December 30, 1946 at Immaculate Conception Church in North Washington. After their marriage Delmer and Lucille traveled the country painting water towers. Later they settled in New Hampton where she sold Watkins products for several years. In 1971 she was employed by Sara Lee Foods in New Hampton until 1986 when she retired. Lucille enjoyed golf, playing cards with the men, traveling with family and going to Lake Thunderhead in Missouri. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Center – Holy Family Parish, St. Joseph’s Rosary Society and the Fredericksburg Country Club.

Lucille is survived by children Delmer “Bill” (Shirley Pitz) Brown of New Hampton, Larry (Phyllis) Brown of New Hampton, Shirley (David) Kopp of Marion, and Susanne (Tom) Olson of Olathe, Kansas; grandchildren Jennifer (Jeff) Muzzy, Del Brown, Nicole Brown, Kelly (Ryan) Daily, Lucy Kopp, Beau Kopp, and Alex and Andrew Olson; great grandchildren Sarah Muzzy and Madeline Daily; sisters Leota (Bill) Burns of Marshalltown, Laurie (Bob) Burns of Cedar Rapids, Doris Miller of Minneapolis, Minn., and Robert (Sue) Miller of Minneapolis, Minn; sister-in-law Pearl Brown of Waterloo; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Delmer in 1991, five children at birth, and brother Francis “Sonny” Miller.


Floyd Franklin Bridges dies at 95

Floyd Franklin Bridges age 95 of Hampton, formerly of Plainfield died Friday evening, Jan. 21, 2011, at the Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility in Hampton.

Floyd Franklin Bridges was born July 21, 1915, in Houston, Mo, the son of George Lee and Elizabeth (Elmore) Bridges. He received his education in rural country schools in both Missouri and Iowa. On July 20, 1935, at the Baptist Parsonage in Marshalltown, he married the love of his life, Beatrice Pipher. To this union five children were born. Floyd had several occupations in agriculture and retail as well as being a machinist. During WWII, he worked as Lead Machinist at the Army Ordinance Plant in Ankeny. In 1947 he began farming near Plainfield where he and Bea lived for 47 years. Floyd also worked for 12 years at the Schield Bantam in Waverly and completed his career at the John Deere Implement in New Hampton.

Floyd enjoyed wood-working and fishing in his free time. He especially loved to introduce the joy of fishing to his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife of 75 years, Beatrice; four sons, Roger (Karen) Bridges of Bloomington, Ill., Kenneth (Barbara L.) Bridges of Breaux Bridge, LA, Wayne (Barbara H.) of Beaverton, OR, Darrel (Esther) Bridges of Belleview Fla; one daughter, Bonnie (Steve) Stewart of Hampton; fourteen grandchildren and twenty-five great-grandchildren; one brother, George (Ruth) Bridges of Clarksville.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Cecil Bridges, James Bridges, Clarence Bridges; five sisters, Bessie Neidermann, Beulah Coldren, Fern Hutcheson, Irene Wiebrand, Thelma Giannetto; one grandson-in-law; Mark Johnson.


Gerald “Gary” Francis Grimmond dies at 78

Gerald “Gary” Francis Grimmond 78, died Thursday January 20, 2011, at the Good Shepherd Health Care Center, Mason City.

A memorial Mass was held at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, January 24, 2011, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 North Adams, Mason City, with Reverend Michael Schueller officiating. Inurnment will take place at a later date in the Calvary Cemetery, Omaha, Nebraska. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa.

Gerald Francis Grimmond was born September 22, 1932, in Omaha, Nebraska the son of Paul James and Alice Evelyn (Roche) Grimmond. After high school Gary continued his education graduating with his bachelor’s degree in journalism from The University of Nebraska. Gary served in the United States Navy from January 22, 1952 until his honorable discharge on December 18, 1954. Gary was united in marriage to Katie Larsen on April 4, 1959, in Omaha, Nebraska; to this union four daughters were born. Gary worked for several small newspapers in Kansas, Nebraska and Iowa. He joined the Globe Gazette in 1968, first as a reporter and later the editor of the RuraLife, retiring after 20 years. Gary purchased the Nashua Reporter in 1988 and owned and operated that newspaper until 1992.

Gary enjoyed bicycling, traveling, books and spending time with his children and grandchildren. Over the years Gary was involved in the River City Barbershop Chorus, Mason City Community Theater and was a hospital and library volunteer. He will be remembered for having a thirst for knowledge.

Gary is survived by his four daughters Jeanine (Michael) Strong, Carmel Valley, Calif., Mary Lee (Tom) Kreger, Brainerd, Minn., Carol (Marty) Ramaekers, Mason City and Elizabeth (Carl Allendorf) Grimmond, Cooper Landing, Ark; grandchildren, Samantha Freese, Brainerd, Minn., Steven Fisher, Phoenix, Ariz., Andrew Ramaekers, Decorah, Madilyn Ramaekers, Cedar Falls, Sam Strong, Edinburgh, Scotland; one brother John (Phyllis) Grimmond and one sister Kathleen Krejci, all of Omaha, Neb; 7 nieces and nephews; along with numerous great nieces and great nephews.

Gary is preceded in death by his parents Paul and Alice Grimmond.

Deborah Kay Warner dies at 60

Deborah Kay Warner, age 60, of Williston, Fla., formerly of Waverly, passed away in her home on Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2011 after a short illness.

Funeral services were held in her home town of Williston on Friday, January 21, 2011. Burial will be held at a later date.

Deborah Kay was born April 19, 1950, the daughter of Lawrence and Mary (Waedekin) Roehling in Waverly. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Artesia. Deborah graduated from Tripoli High School in 1968. On September 9, 1992 she was united in marriage to Gaylon Warner. Deborah was employed by Patrie USA.

She is survived by her loving husband, Gaylon of Williston, Fla; her sisters, Mary Ann (Mike) Pruisner of Waverly, Virginia (John) Freie of Livermore, Calif., Elaine (Wallace) Knutson of New Hampton, Betty Pipho of San Ramon, Calif; brother-in-law, Lester Faust of Waverly and several nieces and nephews.

Deborah was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Lavonne Faust and nephew, Kevin Faust.


Thomas Michael Fickbohm, Sr. dies at 60

Thomas Michael Fickbohm, Sr., 60, of West Des Moines, passed away on Jan. 21, 2011 at Broadlawns Medical Center in Des Moines, from complications from cancer.

A Funeral Mass was held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday at St. Mary of Nazareth Catholic Church, in Des Moines, of which he was a member. Visitation was held from 6-8 p.m., Monday at Iles Funeral Homes – Westover Chapel in Des Moines, where a Vigil Service began at 7:30 p.m. Private family burial will be held at a later date.

Thomas was born on October 5, 1950, the son of Thomas and Dorothy Fickbohm in Forest City. He graduated from New Hampton High School. Tom joined the US Air Force and was honorably discharged. Tom had lived in various cities including Seattle, Las Vegas and Victorville, Calif., prior to moving to Des Moines in 2006. He worked in insurance sales for most of his life and was a cab driver for Trans Iowa. Tom was a member of the Countryside Golf Course. His greatest passion was golf and he loved the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Tom is survived by his wife, Audrey; children, Stephanie (Jason) Fitzsimmons, Des Moines, Tom Fickbohm, Jr. (Renee), Altoona, Jessica (John) Wagner and Megan Fickbohm all of Washington and Clinton (Amanda) Joseph of Kentucky; six grandchildren; two brothers, Roger and Larry Fickbohm and a sister, Eileen Geble.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Barbara and brother, Richard.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Broadlawns Medical Center.

John C. Fisher, age 68 of Promise City, formerly of Nashua, died Friday Jan. 28, 2011, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 1, 2011, at the United Methodist Church in Nashua with full military honors will be conducted by the Nashua VFW Post 6792.
