Carol J. Zwanziger

Carol J. Zwanziger, 75, of Ionia, died Thursday afternoon, Nov. 4, 2010, at the Nora Springs Care Center in Nora Springs.

Funeral services for Carol Zwanziger will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Saint John Lutheran Church in Nashua. Pastor Tom Hagen will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday. Visitation will continue after 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday at the church.

Carol Jean Buttolph was born March 15, 1935, in Waterloo, the daughter of Ralph and Florence (Hansen) Buttolph. She graduated from the Riceville High School. On May 26, 1963, she was united in marriage to Duane Zwanziger at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Waterloo. Carol was employed at Montgomery Ward in St. Paul, Minn. and Rath Packing Company in Waterloo. Later on after moving to the farm, Carol chose to stay home and raise her family. She was a member of Saint John Lutheran Church in Nashua. Her interests included reading, the computer, TV, crocheting, crafts, playing cards, gambling and spending time with her family and friends.

Living family members include her two children, Bruce (Sharla) Zwanziger of New Hampton and Connie (Chris) O’Neill of Mackinaw, Ill.; seven grandchildren, Madison Zwanziger, Jake Zwanziger, Dillon Zwanziger, Austin O’Neill, Bryce O’Neill, Karli O’Neill and Grace O’Neill; sister, Marilyn (Allen) Baker of Ormond Beach, Fla.; and mother-in-law, Mary Marie Zwanziger of Waverly.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Ionia Library or Saint John Lutheran Church in Nashua.

Selma Irene Hahn

Selma Irene Hahn, 99, of New Hampton, died Saturday, Nov. 6, 2010 at the New Hampton Care Center, New Hampton.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2010 at Trinity Lutheran Church in New Hampton, with Pastor Kevin Frey officiating. Burial will be at New Hampton Cemetery in New Hampton.

Visitation will be on Monday, Nov. 8, 2010, from 4 - 7 p.m. at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in New Hampton. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the service on Tuesday. Selma Irene Schnieder was born on July 14, 1911 to William and Lydia (Kahn) Schniederin New Hampton. She attended country school and New Hampton High School. Selma was united in marriage to Emil Hahn on May 28, 1929 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church (now Trinity Lutheran Church) in New Hampton. The couple farmed in Chickasaw County all their married life until they retired in 1963. They lived in New Hampton for 13 years before moving to Ionia where they lived for 15 years. Selma moved back to New Hampton after Emil’s death and entered New Hampton Care Center in 2005. Selma enjoyed making quilts and pot holders, flowers, cooking and her family. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Trinity Lutheran Quilting Circle and Trinity Lutheran Church Club.

Selma is survived two sons Lloyd (Mary) Hahn of Fairbank and Jerry (Bonnie) Hahn of Cedar Falls; son-in-law David Troynaof New Hampton; sister-in-law Grace Hahn of Sumner; 17 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and numerous great-great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband Emil; son Edward; daughter Lavonne Troyna; two brothers Vernon Schnieder and Virgil Schnieder; two sisters Wilhemina Weidler and Gladys Hugeback; and grandson Terry Hahn.

Edna M. Garnant, 92 of New Hampton, died Saturday, Nov. 6, 2010, at the New Hampton Care Center.

Cletus J. Heffern

Cletus J. Heffern, 86, of Mason City, died Saturday, Nov. 6, 2010, at the Nora Springs Care Center.

A Funeral Mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 11, 2010, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams with Rev. Kenneth Gehling officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday Nov.10, 2010 at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania. A Knights of Columbus Rosary will be held at 7 p.m. followed by a Scriptural Wake Service at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Cletus J. Heffern Memorial Fund in care of the family.

Cletus was born February 16, 1924, in LaCrosse, WI, the son of John C. and Anna (Kelley) Heffern. He graduated from Waterville School. Cletus served as a Private in the U.S. Army. He married Betty Brelsford on June 18, 1949 in Perry. They lived in Union, for 12 years before moving to Mason City in 1962. He operated the locker while in Union. Cletus worked as a Livestock Dealer for Hygrade, Dubuque Packing Company, and Central Livestock Association. He semi-retired and continued working for Central for several years. At the time of his death he was involved with C & S Cattle Company with special friends Steve and Vicki Johnson of Osage. Cletus was a true cattleman's gentleman. He was devoted to the cattle industry and his passion for it kept him going. Through the wonderful people in the industry, he met business associates who became lifelong friends. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus (for 60 years), and the Elks Lodge. Cletus was a public relations man from way back and acquired many friends with his gift. He had a generous spirit and loved to be on the go. Cletus enjoyed watching his grandchildren’s sporting events, traveling with his wife, on family vacations and with his siblings, and spending the winter months in Arizona. His two daughters’ were his biggest hobby and we will truly miss his wisdom and guidance.

Cletus is survived by two daughters: Susan (Shawn) Weydert of Mason City and Jane Goodwin of New Hampton; three granddaughters: Melissa of St. Louis, MO, Danielle, and Michala Goodwin of New Hampton; one grandson: Jamison Weydert of Mason City; one sister: Donna Curtin of Cedar Rapids; one brother: Robert Heffern of Waukon; sister-in-law: Joan Heffern of Cedar Rapids.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 60 years Betty in 2009; son: James Cletus Heffern in infancy; one brother: Don Heffern.


Esther Mildred Poppe

Esther Mildred Poppe, age 75 passed away Sunday, Oct. 31, 2010 at Allen Hospital Comfort Care, Waterloo from complications with cancer.

There will be a memorial service for Esther on Nov. 11, 2010 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Peace Lutheran Church, 121 East Washington Street Shell Rock, for all who wish to attend.

Esther was born Feb. 13, 1935 in Independence to George and Nettie (Frebon) Sommerfelt. As a young woman Esther married Donald Shapley they later divorced, they had two children, Donald Dean and Elizabeth Marie.

Esther worked as a waitress and planter at a tree nursery. She met Orin Poppe who gave Esther and her children a place to live, and after time they married on June 5, 1971.They had one child, Dawn DeAnne Poppe. The family lived in Nashua and years later moved to Tripoli.

Esther enjoyed sewing, making beautiful patchwork quilts, reading, baking, and being with her family.

Esther is survived by her husband Orin C. Poppe of Tripoli, a sister Ida Hansen of Independence and one brother, Elmer Sommerfelt of Paw Paw Mich. Two daughters, Marie Shapley of Plainfield, her fiance Jeff of Cresco, Dawn (Poppe) Spencer and Jonathan Spencer of Plainfield. A daughter-in-law Juanita Shapley of Clarksville. Two granddaughters, two grandsons, two great-grandsons and two great granddaughters.

She was preceded in death by her parents George and Nettie Sommerfelt, one brother, four sisters, and her beloved son Don.


Edna M. Garnant

Edna M. Garnant age 92 of New Hampton died Saturday, Nov. 6, 2010, at the New Hampton Care Center.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 11, 2010, at the Congregational United Church of Christ, New Hampton with Pastor Laura Hucke officiating. Interment will be in the New Hampton City Cemetery with Brett Ohm, Blake Ohm, Aaron Blatti, John Erickson, Brett Bailey and Eugene Schultz, Jr., serving as a pallbearers.

Edna Garnant was born Feb. 25, 1918, in Kanawah, the youngest child of Nicholas and Laura (Pehl) Veldhouse. She had four older brothers, Dick, George, Jim, and Paul Veldhouse. Edna attended Iowa State University and on Dec. 21, 1942, married Loran Garnant of Britt. They lived in LeRoy, Minn. and Waterloo, before moving to New Hampton in 1958. Here Edna became an active member of the Women's Club, Eastern Star, Meals on Wheels, was a docent for the New Hampton Cultural Center and was on the board of directors for the New Hampton Food Pantry. She was integral to the creation of Garnant Park. Edna was also active in managing her farm until her death.

Edna is survived by her daughters, Jackie (John) Erickson of St. Paul, Minn. and Marlene Garnant of Houston; along with grandchildren, Brett Bailey of the Cayman Islands, and Brooke Bailey of Houston, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Loran on Sept. 22, 1978 at the age 59; and four brothers.

In lieu of flowers, the family wishes donations be made to the New Hampton Food Pantry, the New Hampton Cultural Center, or the church of choice.


Edward Brummond

Edward Brummond, age 72, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2010 at Palmer Lutheran Health Center in West Union.

Edward Brummond, the son of Clarence and Edith (Johnson) Brummond, was born September 26th, 1938 in New Hampton.

Ed was united in marriage to Dorothy Knox on August 16th, 1958, in New Hampton. The couple moved to Waucoma and has been residents there for 47 years. He worked for 32 years White Farm Equipment in Charles City, in their foundry operations. He then worked for Featherlite in Cresco, retiring in 2000. Ed was a member of St.

Mary’s Catholic Church in Waucoma.

Edward loved the outdoors. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. Ed also enjoyed woodworking and trips to the casino. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

Ed is survived by his wife; two sons, Mike (Mary) Brummond Fort Atkinson, and Steve (Lorrie) Brummond of Nausha; a daughter, Penny (Jack) Caddell of Waucoma; three brothers, Bob (Peg) Brummond of New Hampton, Jim Brummond of New Hampton, and Glenn (Beth) Brummond of Fairbanks, AL; two sisters, Joyce (Don) Stacy of Waverly, and Shirley (Roger) Regal of Charles City; 10 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; step-father Gerald Brummond; and a brother-in-law Jim German.

Luella S. Lentz

Luella S. Lentz, age 95, of New Hampton, died on Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2010 at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 22, 2010 at Holy Family Parish-St. Mary’s Center in New Hampton with Father Mark Osterhaus celebrating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery at New Hampton with her grandchildren, Brent, Cori, and Bryan Mack, and Bryan, Alison, Emily, Kristi, and Michael Lentz serving as casket bearers.

Visitation will be on Sunday, Nov. 21, 2010 from 3-7 p.m. at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in New Hampton with a 4 p.m. rosary and a 4:30 p.m. scriptural wake service. Visitation will continue at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Monday. Luella Susan Lentz was born March 31, 1915 at North Washington, Iowa, the daughter of the late Mike and Elizabeth Ungs. She attended St. Mary’s Catholic School at North Washington. Upon graduation Luella attended Iowa State Teacher’s College at Cedar Falls. On December 27, 1945, Luella was united in marriage to Vincent A. Lentz at St. Mary’s Church at New Hampton, where the couple made their home. She was a retired Chickasaw County Auditor after 20 years of service in that capacity. Luella also served as Deputy County Recorder, taught rural schools, and a switch-board operator as well as a cashier at the former Iowa State Telephone Company. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Altar and Rosary Society, and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Luella was an avid card player, oil painter, quilter and gardener. She volunteered in local organizations, and was active in her church.

Luella is survived by her children, Linda (Dan) Mack of Carroll, Bob (Joan) Lentz of Cedar Falls, Jim (Linda) Lentz of Green Valley, Arizona, Mike (Lorena) Lentz of El Paso, Texas, and Steve (Celia) Lentz of Estero, Fla.; her grandchildren, Brent, Cori, and Bryan Mack, Bryan, Alison, Emily, Kristi, and Michael Lentz; one sister, Edna Long of New Hampton; one sister-in-law, Imelda Ungs of New Hampton; one brother-in-law, Dale (Mona) Gates of New Hampton; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Vincent Lenz; her brothers, Clarence, Edward, Francis, Reynold, and Clem; and her sisters, Elaine Gates, and Mildred Nosbisch.


Jeffrey Jay Cole

Jeffrey Jay Cole, 48, of Liberty, North Carolina died on Thursday, Nov. 11 at home following a courageous battle with colon cancer.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Nov. 14, in Asheboro, North Carolina. Inurnment services were held with full military rites at Bethlehem Cemetery on Saturday, Nov. 20, Old Fort, North Carolina.

Jeff was born May 24, 1962 in New Hampton the son of Garry Cole and the late Cynthia Pedrick Cole. Following graduation from New Hampton High School, Jeff attended Iowa State University and the University of North Carolina - Wilmington where he earned a degree in Political Science.

Jeff was an active member of the Army ROTC where he received the Army achievement medal, Army Commendation Medal and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant of the Seahawk Battalion. In 1991, the Unit was deployed to Kuwait/Saudi Arabia. It was during Operation Desert Storm when Jeff was awarded the Bronze Star. Following his deployment, Jeff returned to North Carolina and was employed by Banker's Life Insurance Company.

Jeff is survived by his wife Melanie, son Jacob (Charity), Melanie's parents and brothers, Graham and Mary Kendal, Dan and Reed, Father Dr. Garry Cole (Sally) sister Cathy (Terry) Miller, nieces Taryn and Kara, nephews Ryan, Zachary, Hunter, Seth in addition to several aunts, uncles and cousins.


Olinda A. Abel
 

Olinda A. Abel, age 97 died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2010 in Milwaukee, Wisc.

Funeral services were 4 p.m., Nov.19, 2010 at Prasser-Kleczka Funeral Home, in Milwaukee with Pastor Stanley Stein officiating. The committal was Saturday, Nov. 20, 2010 at New Hampton Cemetery, New Hampton.

Olinda was born at home in New Hampton on Feb. 2, 1913, the daughter of William Zickuhr and Adele (Ortman). She was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hew Hampton. After graduation from high school she boarded a train bound for Milwaukee, Wisc. where she lived with her aunt and found employment during the Great Depression.

Olinda married Benjamin Abel and was the mother of Alan (Ina Lee) and Larry Abel. Later she married William Abel and became the step-mother of Donald (Rose) Abel, Eugene (Millie) Abel and Wayne Abel. She is the proud grandmother of Pamela (Rev. Michael) Plagenz, Jeffrey Abel, Lynell (Chris) Korth, Bradley (Susan) Abel, Randy Abel and Cathleen (John) Payne. She was blessed with 13 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Olinda was a determined, independent woman and an inspiration to her whole family. She leaned on the strength of her Lord through many difficulties. Although she will be dearly missed by all, we know she will be at peace in the loving arms of her Savior. To Him be the glory.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Leone Julson, Viola Gott and Arlene Vikdal; and her daughter-in-law, Mary Abel. She is survived by a brother William Zickhur; many dear nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.


Joseph G. Linkenmeyer 

Joseph G. Linkenmeyer, 86, of Charles City, died Sunday evening, November 21, 2010, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Per Joe’s request, he has been cremated with no services.

Joseph George Linkenmeyer was born May 21, 1924, in Ionia, the son of George and Anna (Tilkes) Linkenmeyer. He married Theresa Finnegan on August 27, 1948, at St. Boniface Church in Ionia. Joe enlisted in the United States Navy in July of 1942, serving in the Pacific Theater as a Gunner’s Mate 1st Class, he was honorably discharged in April of 1946. He was employed at the Oliver in Charles City and Rath Packing Company in Waterloo until his retirement in 1984.

He is survived by his wife, Theresa Linkenmeyer of Charles City; daughter, Jennifer (Max) Wildes of Evansdale; grandson, David (Lisa) Young; great-grandsons, AJ and Jacob Young of Asbury; brother, George (Mary) Linkenmeyer of Waterloo; many brothers and sisters-in-law; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Laura, Agatha, Luella, and Ramona; and a brother, Francis.

Sidney D. Hoy

Sidney D. Hoy, age 65, of Davenport, passed away Sunday, Nov. 14, 2010 at Genesis West Medical Center.

Services were held Thursday, Nov. 18, 2010 at Runge Mortuary with burial in Oakdale Memorial Gardens.

Sidney Dennis Hoy was born on April 13, 1945 in Los Angeles, Calif., the only child of Cyrus and Bonita (Osborn) Hoy. He graduated in 1963 from Davenport West High School. Sid and Beverly Eckenrod were married on Sept. 16, 1967 in New Hampton. Following high school graduation, Sid worked at Roemer Machine in Davenport before completing a 4-year Tool and Die Apprenticeship with Swan Engineering in Bettendorf. He retired from Swan in 2008 after 42 years of service.

Sid took great pride in his yard and cars and enjoyed his Tuesday morning breakfast buddies.

Though well known for his colorful use of the English language, Sid was a loving and caring husband; a devoted father and proud Papa to his two precious grandsons.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Beverly; his daughter and son-in-law, Megan and Rick Kirby and grandsons, Hunter and Hudson, Davenport; in-laws Jim and Julie Eckenrod and Linda and Joe Koenigsfeld, New Hampton; Rhonda Fleming, West Richland, Wash; Sue Wussow, Bradley, Ill.; Craig and Alice Eckenrod, Jessup, Md; Al and Eileen France Eckenrod, Poulsbo, Wash. and several nieces, nephews and their families.

Sid was preceded in death by his parents, six aunts, several cousins and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Donald and Pauline Eckenrod.
