Eugene Clem Reicks was born October 26, 1924, on the Reicks family farm near St. Lucas, the son of Victor and Mary (Heying) Reicks. Known as Butch throughout his life, Eugene attended St Luke’s Grade School to eighth grade. He worked with his father and mother, 10 brothers, and 3 sisters until he married his wife, Grace Huinker, on August 30, 1949 and bought one of the family farms near Lawler. Eugene made a living, and lived his life the way he learned on the family farm. Butch was a hard worker, but loved to play just as hard. He was never one
to turn down a ball game, fishing trip, arm-wrestling competition or card game with his family and the many
friends he made throughout his life. A continual jokester, he and Grace could often be found out and about at night while they worked to raise their own family of eight children during the day. Butch did not always do things the easy way, but made a good living for his family and sent all his children on into their own fulfilling lives.

After 40 years on the farm, Butch and Grace retired to their home in Lawler for an easier life. Family and friends, his lifelong love of the Cubs, and following the Bears and Hawkeyes made for a full retirement. Eugene was always looking for a good trip, as he and Grace traveled all around the country and beyond, including his favorite trips to Alaska.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Grace Reicks; and children: Allen (Judy) Reicks of Pella, Eileen (Jerald) Nelson of Eau Claire, Wisc., Kathleen (Randall) VanWinkle of Farmington, Duane (Penny) Reicks of Lawler,
LeeAnn (Kevin) Hogan of Anchorage, Alaska, Mike (Jennie) Reicks of Lawler, Steve (Tammy) Reicks of Solon

Reicks, all of Lawler, Don Reicks of Ft. Atkinson, Harry (Barb) Reicks of St. Lucas, Roy (Carolyn) Reicks of Missouri Valley; two sisters, Marian (Norbert) Retterath, Elsie (Dan) Swehla, all of Spillville.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Victor and Mary Reicks; one son, David Reicks; four brothers, Msgr. Leander Reicks, Jerome Reicks, Neal Reicks, infant Joseph Reicks; and one sister, Lucille Kruse.

Gregory Alan Merfeld dies at 51

Published: Friday, January 27, 2012
Gregory Alan Merfeld was born on May 29, 1960 in Charles City, and passed away on Sunday, Jan. 22, 2012.

Fifty-one years is a shortened life by most people’s standards.  Greg wasn’t like most people though.  Greg didn’t have to worry about carrying out his bucket list at the end because he did the things he dreamed of along the way.  Greg loved sports and lived the sports fans’ dream—he attended the final four in basketball, the Rose Bowl game on numerous occasions, the NCAA BCS Football Championship game, and played golf on courses that would make
the average golfer envious at the notion.  Greg left few stones unturned in his shortened time on this earth.

Greg’s early years were spent in rural Iowa, in the town of Nashua, where he graduated in 1978 with a class of only 75 students.  There he developed his love for golf, a passion he inherited from his father, Mick.  Greg would often play 54 or more holes of golf on a summer day.   Greg was an accomplished golfer and learned the game without any professional lessons.  He won several club championships in Iowa, building a foundation and competitive spirit that would serve him well throughout his life.  He made his first hole-in-one at the age of sixteen and his second in 2007 at North Ranch Country Club in California. Greg never lost his love for golf and enjoyed
his time playing with his good friend, Jeff Johnston, and others at North Ranch Country Club.  In fact, per Greg’s orders, his memorial service could not be held on a Thursday because that’s when men’s league play is scheduled at North Ranch.

Greg developed a penchant for business while growing up in Nashua.  His dad owned a service station and the boys were expected to work part-time there in their teenage years.  While his brother Tim pumped gas, Greg
could often be found in the manager’s chair answering the phone and issuing orders.  This fit his style well since he didn’t like to get dirty and wanted to be the one in charge. Not surprisingly, Greg went on to major in business
at the University of Iowa, becoming the first member of his family to go to college. This experience cemented Greg’s lifelong love of the Iowa Hawkeyes.  Following his graduation, he earned his master’s degree at Kansas State University in College Athletic Administration.  Greg worked for a few years as the athletic ticket manager at the University of Northern Iowa, before leaving heat, humidity, hay fever, and the Hawkeyes for a career opportunity at Cal State Fullerton in sunny California.  And a great move it was as Greg met the love of his life and future wife, Sheri Henesey, at a Cal State Fullerton gathering.  Sheri and Greg married on November 26, 1988.  Greg soon left the rat race of college athletics to go into the private sector.  Greg was a great businessman and had successful stints as a sales executive at Philips, Dole, and Kodak before entering the field of consumer marketing where he was in charge of new business at two market research firms.  Greg was completely in his element meeting and greeting people and forging business deals.  He truly enjoyed his work. As a friend once said,  “if I was standing in front of St. Peter at the Pearly Gates trying to get into heaven, I would want Greg to negotiate for me”.

More important than his career though, was his family.  Sheri was truly his soul mate and the two of them enjoyed attending social events and spending time with their family.  Greg was always very proud of Sheri’s work as a teacher.  He admired the way she cared for her students and put her heart and soul into her work. In 1993 Greg was full of pride that his first-born child was a son. Then in 1995 Greg’s heart melted with the birth of his
daughter Amanda.  Greg loved to attend their school events, spending time with Trent on outings to watch pro sports teams or playing a round of golf together and cheering on Amanda as she played soccer and softball.  He was so proud of their good character and the great people they’re growing up to be.  Talking about his kids
always brought a smile to Greg’s face.   Greg’s parents in Iowa and his siblings, Suzy and Tim, held a special
spot in his heart, too.  Greg enjoyed his annual trip back to Iowa and his parents’ trips to California where he got
to have his favorite meals prepared by his mom.  He especially loved her meatloaf, apple crisp, and fresh baked chocolate chip cookies.  Greg had ongoing text exchanges with his siblings about all things sports, from his nephew’s latest basketball game to the fortunes of the Iowa Hawkeye football team.  He loved to stay connected even when the distance kept them physically apart.

As Greg himself said, he drew the short straw with his diagnosis that ultimately led to his shortened life.  Inspiringly, Greg chose to channel his energy and relentless drive into helping others affected by the disease.  He started The Merfeld Family Foundation to provide scholarships for children of people afflicted by ALS.  The
success of his fundraising efforts well surpassed his initial expectations and this spring the first four scholarships from this foundation will be awarded.  He became a lobbyist and spokesperson for people with ALS through his work on Capitol Hill in Washington, his online blog, and a research forum that he organized and conducted.  Greg quite simply was a difference maker and will be missed greatly.

Left to cherish Greg’s memory are his wife, Sheri Merfeld and children, Trent and Amanda Merfeld, of Agoura
Hills, Calif; his parents, Maurice (Mick) and Sharon Merfeld, of Nashua; brother, Tim Merfeld (Carrie), of Oakland, Calif; sister, Suzy Turner (Keith), of Rockford; Father and Mother-in-law, Jim and Joan Henesey, of Riverside,
Calif; and a host of extended family, friends, and golfing buddies.
