Elizabeth "Betty"
Kahl

Elizabeth "Betty" Kahl, 93, of Spirit Lake, formerly of
Britt, died on Thursday, November 10, 2011, at the Hilltop
Care Center in Spirit Lake, surrounded by her family and
Care Center friends.
Funeral services will be
held on Wednesday, November 16, at 10:30 a.m., at the Ewing
Funeral Chapel in Britt, with Pastor Lee Nelson officiating.
Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Britt.
Visitation was on Tuesday, November 15, from 5-7:00 p.m., at
the funeral home and continued for one hour prior to the
service on Wednesday.
Betty had been living in
Spirit Lake, but was a long time resident of Britt, later
Clear Lake and Minnetonka, Minnesota. Betty was born on June
13, 1918 in Wendelin, Illinois. She later moved to Britt
with her parents Chris and Sophia (Desch) Nix, her sisters
and her brothers. She attended schools in Britt and
graduated from the Britt High School in 1936. She also
attended Britt Junior College. In 1938, she married Ervin
Kahl from Britt.
Together they made their
home and farmed in the Britt community for over 50 years and
were members of the First Lutheran Church in Britt, where
Betty was a very active member and the Galilean Lutheran
Church in Clear Lake. Betty lived her life showing us how to
appreciate the inherent goodness in everyone through her
gentle, non-judgmental acceptance. She worked hard and made
sacrifices with grace and love. Betty and Ervin were
lifelong advocates for educating and enhancing community
life for people with developmental disabilities.
Betty gave beauty and joy
to herself and others through her artistic talents. She
loved road trips, visiting brothers and sisters, dancing,
picnics, golfing and playing dominos.
Betty is survived by her
daughters, Karmon Amsler and husband, John of Okoboji and
Mona Jean Kahl of Spirit Lake; granddaughter, Shonda Warner
of Clarksdale, Mississippi; grandson, Trenton Warner and
Susan Stone and great-granddaughter, Ridley Stone Warner of
Oakland, California; her sisters, Geneva King, Mildred and
Lyle Phillips; brothers, Bill Nix, Chris and Dorothy Nix,
all of Evansville, Indiana; and many nieces and nephews from
the Nix side of the family; step-grandchildren, John and
Mary Amsler of Austin, Texas, Greg and Chell Amsler of
Stevenson Ranch, California and Paige and Mike Sampson of
Libertyville, Illinois and their families; and by niece and
nephews, Marsha Peterson and husband, Paul of Britt, Gary
Kahl and wife, Katie of Clear Lake, Bob Kahl and wife,
Lavonne of Florida and their families.
Betty was preceded in
death by her husband, Ervin; son, Lon; her parents, Chris
and Sophia Nix; sister, Mary Ann Higgens and brothers,
Morris, Matt and John Nix, all of Oregon; and brother-in-law
and sister-in-law, Neil and Lorraine Kahl of Britt.
Betty will be remembered
as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister.

Duane A. Pigman
November 16, 2011
Duane A. Pigman, 63, of Crystal Lake, died on Saturday,
November 12, 2011, at the Westview Care Center in Britt.
Memorial services will be
held at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday, November 16, at the
Cataldo Funeral Chapel in Garner, with Chaplain Janet
Dorenkamp of the Hospice of North Iowa officiating. Burial
will be at a later date in the Concord Township Cemetery.
Duane Arnold Pigman, was
born on February 12, 1948 in Sioux City. He graduated from
the Crystal Lake High School in 1966 and continued his
education at a technical college in Des Moines. On June 21,
1975, he married Julie Gouge at the St. Paul Lutheran Church
in Garner. They lived in Garner until moving to their home
in Crystal Lake in 1977. Duane farmed the home farm located
south of Crystal Lake, drove delivery trucks, then worked at
Winnebago Industries in Forest City for 10 years, until
health issues caused him to retire.
He enjoyed hunting,
boating, fishing, motorcycles, horses and participating in
and going to rodeos. Duane also enjoyed doing things with
his grandkids and holiday family get-togethers. He was a
member of the St. John's Lutheran Church in Woden and the
Odd Fellows.
Duane is survived by his
wife, Julie of Crystal Lake and their three children, Justin
Pigman of Crystal Lake, Renae (Ryan) Welhousen of Titonka
and Rhonda Pigman of Crystal Lake; two children from a
previous marriage, Rob Pigman of Lake Mills and Sheila
Michelson of Swea City; grandchildren, Anthony, James, Kyle,
Dalten, MacKenzie, Riley, Reese and Rowan; his mother, Lois
Bauer of Garner; and siblings, Hal (Cindy) Bauer of Kanawha,
Dallas Bauer of Garner, Connie Bauer of Garner, Janelle
Smith of Garner, Dean Bauer of Forest City and Mark Bauer of
Garner.
He was preceded in death
by his grandparents, Robert and Alta Pigman; and his
favorite hunting dog, Rosie.

Margaret Larson

Margaret Larson, 89, of Britt, passed away on Monday,
November 28, 2011, at the Westview Center in Britt.
Funeral services were held
on Friday, December 2, at 10:30 a.m., at the Evangelical
Free Church in Britt, with Pastor Mark Stevens officiating.
Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery in Britt. Visitation
was held on Thursday, December 1, from 5-7:00 p.m., at the
Ewing Funeral Chapel in Britt and continued one hour prior
to the services at the church.
Margaret Janette (Indvik)
Larson, was born on January 23, 1922, on the family farm
west of Forest City, the daughter of Oscar and Myrtle (Groath)
Indvik. Margaret's father died when she was seven years old.
She began her early education in Colorado Springs, Colorado
and continued in the rural schools of Linden Township,
attended the Forest City High School and graduated from the
Thompson High School in 1940. After graduation, she was
employed at the Palace of Sweets in Forest City. During
World War II she went to Burbank, California, where she was
employed with Vega Aircraft making parts for the B-17
airplane. Following the war, she was an operator for the
Central Iowa Telephone Company in Forest City.
On February 14, 1948,
Margaret was united in marriage to Leo A. Larson at the
family farm northwest of Britt. She was a homemaker and
partner in the farming operation. She enjoyed spending time
with her family and friends. Margaret will be remembered for
her cooking and baking abilities, including her famous
macaroni and cheese and Norwegian kringla. She was a member
of the Evangelical Free Church, Women's Missionary Society,
Britt Women's Club and often hosted the neighborhood Bible
study.
Margaret is survived by
her two daughters, Janell Salcedo of Owatonna, Minnesota and
Janice Turner of West Des Moines; four grandchildren,
Natalee Thompson of Greenville, South Carolina, Brandon
Salcedo of Plymouth, Minnesota, Jennifer (Tony) Utley of New
Hampton and Kevin (Jillian) Turner of Huntsville, Alabama;
seven great-grandchildren; sister, Anna Mae Orvick of Britt;
sisters-in-law, Betty Indvik of Forest City and Grace Larson
of Kanawha; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death
by her husband, Leo on December 31, 2000; her parents; and
two brothers, Loren Indvik and Oscar Indvik, Jr.

Evelyn Purvis
December 7, 2011
Evelyn Purvis, 91, of Britt, went to be with her Lord and
Savior on Monday, November 28, 2011, at the Hancock County
Memorial Hospital in Britt.
Funeral services were held
on Friday, December 2, at 10:00 a.m., at the Britt Christian
Reformed Church, with Pastor Joel DeBoer officiating. Burial
was in the Shiloh Township Cemetery in Wellsburg, at 2:30
p.m. on Friday. Visitation was held on Thursday, December 1,
from 5-7:00 p.m., at the Britt Christian Reformed Church in
Britt and continued one hour prior to the services also at
the church.
Evelyn, the daughter of
John and Lucy (Willems) Ross was born on July 28, 1920 in
Wellsburg. She was baptized in the East Friesland
Presbyterian Church in 1920, attended the Wellsburg Public
Schools and graduated with the Class of 1937. In May of
1939, she graduated from the Waterloo School of Beauty
Culture. She owned and operated a beauty shop until 1941.
Evelyn became a member of
the Second Wellsburg Christian Reformed Church in 1939 and
was a faithful servant for many years-active in the choir
and the Helping Hand Society. She loved the Lord Jesus and
committed her life to Him.
On October 10, 1941, she
married Lt. Donald L. Purvis of Grundy Center. After Don's
military service, they made their home in Wellsburg. While
in Wellsburg, Evelyn was a founding member of the Wellsburg
Library, serving on the board for several terms. She also
was a charter member of the Wellsburg Study Club.
After having raised their
children in Wellsburg, Evelyn and Don moved to Florida in
1976. They wintered there until December 2002, when they
made their permanent home in Britt. She was a member of the
First Presbyterian Church of Port Charlotte, Florida and
later became a member of the Christian Reformed Church in
Britt.
Evelyn was an avid reader,
wonderful seamstress and loved to knit dishcloths to give
away as gifts.
She is survived by her
five children and their families, Linda Schmidt of Richmond,
Virginia, Bonnie Buchholtz of Austin, Texas, Jim (Jeanie)
Purvis of Britt, Dean (Cathy) Purvis of Charlotte, North
Carolina and Jean (Jerry) Gilmer of Sycamore, Illinois;
twelve grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren; and
her sister, Wilma King of Sahuarita, Arizona.
She was preceded in death
by her parents, John and Lucy Ross; her husband of 61 years,
Don Purvis; her son-in-law, Bill Buchholtz; and
daughter-in-law, Robyn Purvis.
Evelyn's quick wit and her
kind and loving nature will be missed dearly by her friends
and family.
