Darlene Smith, 70


April 4, 2001

Darlene Gloria Smith, 70, of Wesley, passed away on Sunday, April 1, 2001, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City. She struggled many years with cardio-vascular problems.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 3, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Wesley, with the Rev. Kim Gates officiating.

Darlene is survived by her husband, Glen of Wesley; her daughter, Judy and husband, Craig Heyer of Titonka; three grandchildren, Jason Heyer, Titonka, Sarah and her husband, Kevin Kakacek of Cedar Falls and Rachel Heyer and her fiancée, Brett Venteicker, both of Cedar Falls. Also surviving are her sister-in-law, Joyce and her husband, Jim Nielsen of Aurora, Illinois.

Darlene was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Terry in 1974 and Randy in 1973; two sisters-in-law, Shirley Kuchenreuther and husband, Jim and Pearl Gremmer and husband, George.

Dorotha "Dottie" Tegtmeyer, 78

April 11, 2001

Dorotha "Dottie" Tegtmeyer, 78, of Wesley, died on Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at her home near Wesley.

Memorial services were held on Saturday, April 7, at the First Lutheran Church in Britt, with the Rev. Dr. William Breen Interim Pastor, officiating. Burial will be at a later date in the Evergreen Cemetery in Britt.

Dottie is survived by her husband, Louis of Wesley; two sons, Rick Tegtmeyer and his wife, Barb of Britt and Randy Tegtmeyer and his wife, Natalie of Blairsburg; four grandsons, Shane Tegtmeyer and his wife, Barb, Brad Tegtmeyer and his wife, Christy, Tyler and Bryce Tegtmeyer; three granddaughters, Betsy, Melissa and Jenna Tegtmeyer; and three great-grandchildren, Andy, Ashley, and Alyssa.

Lyle E. Dallman, 83

April 11, 2001

Lyle E. Dallman, 83, of Britt, died on Wednesday, April 4, 2001, at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 7, at the Evangelical Free Church in Britt, with Pastor Peter Schmidlkofer officiating. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery in Britt, with military graveside services conducted by the Britt Ceremonial Unit.

Lyle served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Europe for 4 years, earning a field commission as a lieutenant. He was wounded in action and was awarded the Purple Heart. While at home on furlough, he was married to Evelyn Hanson at her parents Crystal Lake farm home on March 2, 1945. Lyle and Evelyn had five children, David of Texas, Danita of Chicago, Timothy and wife, Linda of Arvada, Colorado, Peter and wife, Francie of Iowa City and Brian and wife, Cindy of Britt.

Elizabeth "Liz" Schwennen Barnes, 66

April 18, 2001

Elizabeth "Liz" Schwennen Barnes, 66, of Britt, passed away on Sunday, April 8, 2001, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, April 11, at the First Lutheran Church in Britt, with the Rev. Dr. William Breen Interim Pastor, officiating. Burial was in the Dumont Cemetery in Dumont.

Liz is survived by her husband, Ray Barnes of Britt; her children, Rick Schwennen and his wife, Linda of Grand Mound, John Schwennen and his wife, Mary of Parkersburg and Sandy Gutting and her husband, Phil of Mason City; nine grandchildren; her mother, Neva Alt of Iowa Falls; one sister, Shirley Lyman of Wilton; one brother, Harold Alt and his wife, Carol of Mason City.

James A. Yeakel, 54, of Kanawha, died on Monday, April 9, 2001, at the Kanawha Community Home.

Funeral services were held on Friday, April 13, at the Kanawha Lutheran Church in Kanawha, with Rev. Dr. William Breen Interim Pastor, officiating. Burial was in the Amsterdam Township Cemetery in Kanawha, with military graveside services conducted by the Kanawha American Legion.

Jim is survived by his two daughters, Jennifer Eden and her husband, Allen of Clear Lake and Jamie Yeakel of Clear Lake; two brothers, Greg Yeakel and his wife, Sue and their children, Gabe, Rowena and Nate of Story City and Randy Yeakel and his wife, Darla and their children.

Luke Charles Youngwirth, 78

Luke Charles Youngwirth, 78, died suddenly on Monday, April 9, 2001, at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital, Britt.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, April 11, at the St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Wesley, with the Rev. Daniel Greving officiating. Interment will be in the St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, Wesley.

He is survived by his wife, Rita of Wesley; his children, Dennis Youngwirth and his wife, Ellie of Wesley, Tim Youngwirth and his wife, Liz of Bancroft and Lisa Elbert and her husband, Jeff of Wauconda, Illinois; his son-in-law, Steven Doughan of Wesley; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three sisters, Dorothy Becker of Livermore, Alice May of Algona and Mary Krieps of Wesley; and a brother, John Youngwirth and his wife, Toots of Wesley.

Etta Bruns, 98, passed away on Friday, April 13, 2001, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday, April 18, at the First Lutheran Church, Britt, with the Rev. Dr. William H. Breen Interim Pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Britt.

Etta is survived by three daughters, Rosella Bruns of Britt, Lillian and Don Dettmer of Walnut Creek, California and Adeline and Hans Larsen of Dike; one son, Raymond Bruns and his wife, Marilyn of Britt; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lora Redenius of Britt and Lydia Hillenga of Woden; three sisters-in-law, Lena Harringa of Britt, Francis Bruns of Britt and Tressie Beenken of Buffalo Center; and two brothers-in-law, Edward Stohr of Woden and Bruno Bruns of Britt.

George Brcka, 84

April 25, 2001

George L. Brcka, 84, of Britt, died on Saturday, April 21, 2001, at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital, Britt.

The funeral was held at 10:30 a.m., on Tuesday, April 24, at the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Britt, with the Rev. Fr. Marvin Bries officiating. Lector was Randy Cink. Music was provided by organist, Brenda Smith who accompanied vocalists, Tim Assink and Allison Hejlik. Ushers were Allan Doughan and Marvin Holck. Gift bearers were Andrew Higgins and Joseph Higgins. Altar servers were Stephen Volcko, Adam Cink and Ryan Pritchard.

Casket bearers were George's grandsons, Randy Cink, Thomas Cink, Larry Cink, Tony Cink, Greg Brcka, Chad Brcka and David Brcka. Interment was in the St. Johns Catholic Cemetery, Duncan. The Cataldo Funeral Home, Britt was in charge of the arrangements.

George is survived by his wife, Marie of Britt; five children, Janice Cink and her husband, Dennis of Wesley, Kenneth Brcka and his wife, Kathy of Golden Valley, Minnesota, Dale Brcka of West Des Moines, Barbara Brcka of Mason City and Diane Higgins and her husband, Daniel of Cedar Falls; 18 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Leonard Brcka and his wife, Velma of Iowa City and Clarence Brcka and his wife, Elizabeth of Palm Desert, California; and a sister, Doris Chesshir of Lincoln, Nebraska.

Jerry L. Abbas, 56, of St. Louis, Missouri, formerly of Kanawha, passed away on Saturday, April 28, 2001, in St. Louis, Missouri.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Carole A. (Inge) Abbas; four children, Rose (John) Beckham, Jerry L. Abbas, Jr., Anthony L. Abbas and Gaylord L. Abbas (Gayle could not attend due to commitments to the Air Force); step-children, John Inge, Amanda (Michael) Hayden and Patrick Inge; grandchildren, Kristina Beckham, Michael Beckham and Elizabeth Hayden; one sister, Audrey (Norman) Mehl; two brothers, Donald (Leona) Abbas, Denny (Jean) Abbas and Lucia Abbas.

Gerald D. "Red" Whipple, 78 of Belmond, passed away on Sunday, April 29, 2001, at the Belmond Medical Center.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 1, at the United Methodist Church in Belmond, with Pastor Janet Wearda officiating.

Red is survived by his wife, Anita; one daughter, Kathy Moore and her husband, Joe of Plymouth; and two sons, Bob Whipple and his wife, Lois of Britt and Dennis Whipple and his wife, Linda of West Jordan, Utah; six grandchildren, Rob, Roxanne, Rick, Jason, Tyler and Jodi; ten great-grandchildren; one brother, Leslie (Whimp) and his wife, Shirley of Belmond; his mother-in-law, Helen Nelson of Belmond; three sisters-in-law, Betty Thompson of Belmond, Ruth Thompson of New York and Iola Whipple of Mason City; four brothers-in-law, Duane and his wife, Linda of Belmond, Bill and his wife, Dory of Mason City, Jack and his wife, Marlys of Mesa, Arizona and Jim Wood of Greensboro, North Carolina.
