Mildred P. Yaggy

July 20, 2011

Mildred P. Yaggy, 95, of Britt, died on Tuesday, July 12, 2011, at the Westview Care Center in Britt.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m.., on Friday, July 15, at the United Methodist Church in Britt, with Revs. Larry Vallery and Bob Dodge officiating. A private family inurnment was held in the Evergreen Cemetery in Britt. The Cataldo Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Mildred Phyllis Yaggy, the daughter of Norman and Lila Dickens was born on February 6, 1916 at Alpha. She was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith and became a member of the United Methodist Church in Sumner. Millie received her education in the schools of Bremer County and graduated from Sumner High School in 1934. On December 2, 1939, she was married to Mahlon Yaggy, son of Rev. Jacob and Mabel Yaggy of Toledo, at the United Brethren Church in Cedar Falls. They spent the biggest share of their married life in Britt.

Millie enjoyed her flower gardens, oil painting, reading and her dog, Benjie. She loved sports and during high school was very active in track, basketball and also softball. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School, sang in the choir and belonged to UMW. Millie loved to share her flowers and many Sunday mornings they were seen in the church. Mille was also past worthy matron of Eastern Star and past Noble Grand of the Rebekah Lodge No. 334.

Millie is survived by her daughter, Lori (Kevin) Stockman of Ogden; four grandchildren, Lisa (Dan) McNickle of Alden, Darla Van Kooten of Dallas Center and her friend, Daryl, Kim Reiber of Iowa Falls and David (Catrina) Sweers of Mauston, Wisconsin; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Mahlon on June 23, 1992; daughter, Sandra Troe on October 11, 2002; parents; and a brother, Ross Dickens.


Mildred M. Bauer

Mildred M. Bauer, 83, of Mason City, died on Saturday, July 16, 2011, at her home.

A Funeral Mass was held on Tuesday, at the Holy Family Catholic Church, with Rev. Michael Schueller officiating. Burial was in the Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Mildred Bauer memorial fund, in care of the family.

Mildred was born on December 30, 1927 in Forest City, the daughter of Andrew and Alice (Hanson) Chodur. She attended school in Forest City. On June 8, 1946, she married John Bauer at the St. Boniface Church in Garner. Mildred was a homemaker and also worked for Winnebago a few years. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and Church Guild - Catholic Daughters of America. She was also a 55 year member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Wesley. Mildred loved spending time with family, especially her grandchildren. She would spend hours on the phone visiting with her children. Mildred enjoyed cooking, canning, baking, traveling, going to the casino, antiquing, shopping, golfing, sewing, and quilting beautiful family quilts for her grandchildren. She also enjoyed feeding the wildlife in her backyard and watching nature while relaxing on her patio. Mildred was a first class person. She was strong willed and always willing to help others. She had a heart of gold with deep faith.

Mildred is survived by her husband of 65 years, John Bauer; eight children, Pamela Rayhons, Deb Bauer, Renee (Kevin) Hendrickson, Jeff (Nancy) Bauer, Jason Bauer, Jarrett Bauer, Sharon "Sherrie" Bauer and Jovian "Jo" Bauer; her grandchildren, Matt Bauer, Beth (James) Tindell, Jacob (Kate) Mertz, Jason (Dena) Mertz, Adam Mertz, Jason Hendrickson, Kayla Hendrickson, Michelle (Juan) Cangas, Bradley Rayhons, Kevin Rayhons, Crystal Bauer, Weston Bauer and Nathan Ruppelt; step-grandchildren, Sarah (Nick) Ortmeier and Rachel (Jesse) Huston; 10 great-grandchildren, Andrea, Karina, Isaac, Rowen, Connor, Ashlee, Gavin, Landon, Cody and Jase; siblings: Delores Norcross, Gerry Hart, Kenneth (Shirley) Chodur, Odella Broome, Irene (Dick) King; in-laws, Bill (Sally) Bauer, Ruth Mary Meyer, Clara Lu Wellik and Marlene (Tom) Liermann; and by many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, James Chodur, Betty Kaduce, Linda Mayo, Donald Chodur, Ilene Bailey and Ralph Chodur; in-laws, Bernadette Pfeffer and Ralph (Clara) Bauer; and great-granddaughter, Brittany Bauer.

The Major Erickson Funeral Home and Crematory of Mason City, was in charge of the arrangements.


Alice "Gen" Johnson

August 3, 2011

Alice Genevieve "Gen" Johnson, 90, of Britt, passed away on Saturday, July 23, 2011, at the Mercy Medical Center North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, July 26, at 2:00 p.m., at the Ewing Funeral Chapel in Britt, with Father Elliot Blackburn and Pastor Joel DeBoer officiating. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery in Britt. Visitation was held on Tuesday, July 26, one hour prior to the services at the Ewing Funeral Chapel.

Alice Genevieve "Gen" Johnson, the daughter of Albert and Annie (Lewis) Bower, was born on September 12, 1920 in Mason City, Iowa. She attended schools in Mason City and started working at SS Kresge while in high school, during the Great Depression. Gen worked there for a few years before getting married. Gen was united in marriage to Harold Johnson on September 29, 1941 in Maryville, Missouri. She then entered into the Civil Service so that she and Harold could be stationed together at Fishers Island, off the Connecticut coast. Gen was a dietitian at an Army Hospital. After the war ended, she became chief of stock records at the ordinance where she and Harold were stationed. When Harold was discharged, Gen returned to Britt with him where they started building houses. In 1951, they built and managed the skating rink in Britt for three years, all the while continuing to build houses. In March of 1954, they were blessed by the birth of their only daughter, Terri. In 1961, the couple purchased the Bayside Resort at Leech Lake near Walker, Minnesota and ran that until selling it three years later. They returned to Britt where they once again remodeled houses. In 1991, Harold and Gen bought and remodeled their current home in Britt.

Gen was a member of the St. John's Episcopal Church in Mason City. She enjoyed roller-skating, bowling, crossword puzzles, word games like Scrabble, math puzzles and fixing almost anything people brought to her that may have been broken. Gen loved to spend time with her family, especially during holidays and the Hobo Day weekend.

Gen is survived by her husband of 70 years, Harold of Britt; daughter, Terri Lauderback of Britt and her special friend, Gary Wilcox of Spencer; granddaughters, Lia Lauderback of Moses Lake, Washington and Alissa Lauderback of Britt; sister-in-law, Ruth (Keith) Palmer of Sac City; along with numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Doris Marson, Lucille Elsie Petersen, Stella Parks and Joanne Ruth Francis; brother, Albert Bower; son-in-law, Garo Lauderback; along with other in-laws, nieces and nephews.
