Elaine G. Christenson

Elaine G. Christenson, 83, of Belmond, died on Tuesday, May 1, 2001, at the
Westview Care Center in Britt.
Funeral services were held on Friday, May 4, at the
Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond, with Pastor Rod Hopp officiating.
Interment was in the Belmond Cemetery near Belmond.
Music was provided by Eldoris Bunnell, organist
and
Marilyn Janssen, soloist. Casket bearers were Mickey Gruis, Matthew
Hoelscher, Reece Hoelscher, Dale Hoelscher, Mark Hoelscher, and Wade
Withers.
Elaine, the daughter of Julius T. and Lillie R. Ulstad
Johnson, was born on August 24, 1917, near St. Olaf in Wright County. She grew
up in the Belmond area where she attended country schools. Elaine graduated
from the Belmond High School in 1936.
Elaine enjoyed sewing, baking, playing cards, and
having coffee every morning with her friends at the Belmond Apartments. She
was a member of the Neighborhood Club, Birthday Club, and numerous other
organizations in Belmond. She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in
Belmond, where she belonged to the Trinity Lutheran Women.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband,
John; and five brothers, David, Ervin, Leslie, Richard and Luther.
Elaine is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law,
Marjorie Ann and Robert Hoelscher of Northwood, Alice Kay and Donald Pauskee
of Brooten, Minnesota and Pamela Jane and Wayne Withers of Sioux Rapids; 11
grandchildren, Reece, Dale, Mark, Mickey, Brian, Lori, Tracy, Wendy, Jody,
Deanna and Wade; 20 great-grandchildren; three sisters and brothers-in-law,
Margie and Donald "Red" Sheriff of Belmond, Arlene and Milo Berhow of
Belmond and Jeanette and Jerome Hall of Sheffield.

Maria del Socorro A. Lopez

Maria del Socorro A. Lopez, 69, died on Thursday, May 3, 2001, at
the McAllen Medical Center
in McAllen, Texas.
Born in Rio Grande City, Texas, the daughter of Maximo
and Maria Alaniz of Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico, Maria had lived in Mission,
Texas. She was a housewife and involved with the Baptist Deaf Community.
Survivors include her husband, Adalberto Lopez, Sr. of
Mission; sons, Adalberto and Olivia Lopez, Jr. of Belmond and Hector Raul and
Janie Lopez of Mission, Texas; daughters, Beatriz and Morris Alvardo of
Houston, Texas, Diana and Mark Gonzales of Houston, Texas, Maria and Gilbert
Garcia of McAllen, Texas and Teresa de Jesus and Mauricio Salinas of El
Paso; 12 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; four brothers, Servando and
Corina Alaniz of Robstown, Reymundo and Velma Alanziz of Silver Spring,
Maryland and Paul and Julia Garza of Rio Grande City; a sister, Consuelo
and Esteban de la Cerda of Dallas, Texas.
A Funeral Mass was held on Saturday, May 5, at Our Lady of
Guadalupe Catholic Church in Mission.

Kenneth L. Kinseth

Kenneth L. Kinseth, 82, of Decorah, died on Saturday, May 5, 2001, at
the Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, of complications from a stroke.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, May 10, at the
First Lutheran Church, with Rev. Thomas Miller officiating. Burial was in the
Lutheran Cemetery, with full military rites. Casket bearers were Ben Kinseth, Peter Kinseth, Aaron
Mailey, Jason Mailey, Jack "In" Won and Matt Young.
Kenneth was born on June 24, 1918, the son of Bernold O.
and Neva (Oler) Kinseth. He graduated from the Alexander High School in 1936 and
attended Iowa State University for a short period of time.
He served in the Air Force during WW II. Following that
he was Superintendent of the Air Force Base in Anchorage, Alaska as a
civilian.
He married Cyrena K. DeWaard on March 25, 1953 in
Kanawha.
Except for his military service time, Kenneth lived in
Belmond from 1918 until 1966. He moved to Decorah in 1966. He was a
successful businessman, owning and operating Kinseth Plumbing and Heating in
Belmond, which he later sold to his brothers. He developed several hotels,
among them the Cliff House in Decorah, founded the Kinseth Hospitality
Companies, operating several hotels and restaurants throughout the Midwest.
He also developed and operated apartment housing and golf courses.
He was a member of the Elk's Club, Oneota Golf and
Country Club, and the Silver Crest Golf and Country Club in Decorah.
Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents; and by
his first wife, Ardell Soma.
Survivors are his wife, Cyrena; daughter and
son-in-law, Linda and Keith Skinner of Council Bluffs and their children,
Aaron Mailey, Jason Mailey, Shana Young and Laura Mailey; three sons and
daughters-in-law, Leslie and Alisa Kinseth of Clear Lake and their daughter,
Ashley Kinseth, Bruce and Lisa Kinseth of Coralville and their children,
Ben, Peter, and Kelly Kinseth, Gary and Darla Kinseth of Mason City and
their children, Tristan and Kyra Kinseth; a very special person, like a son
who lived with the Kinseth family for three years, Jack "In" Won (Tommy) of
LaHabra, California; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Roland and
Marian Kinseth of Belmond, Roger Kinseth, and Larry and Shari Kinseth, all
of Belmond; three sisters, Maxine Dorr and Avon Armour, both of Belmond, and
Artie Buchanan of Mason City.

Phillip Covington

A graveside service for Phillip Covington will be held at the Belmond Cemetery
on Saturday, May 5, 2001. Rod Hopp will be officiating.
Phillip M. Covington, 75, of Des Moines, died
on November
20, 2000, at the Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. The body was cremated.
Phillip Covington, the son of Sam and Pearl Rierson
Covington, was born on July 8, 1925 in Belmond. He was baptized and confirmed
in the Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond. Phillip attended school in Belmond,
graduating from the Belmond High School in 1943.
Phillip enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in
1943, and served his country during WW II. Following his Honorable Discharge
in 1946, he attended the University of Iowa, graduating in 1951.
He was a member of the St. John's Lutheran Church in
Des Moines.
Phillip was preceded in death by his parents. There are
no immediate survivors.

Edith Shahan

Edith Marjorie Shahan, 84, of Belmond, died on Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at the Riverside Manor
Nursing Home in Ames.
Funeral services were held on Monday, May 14, at
the Trinity
Lutheran Church in Belmond, with Pastor Rod Hopp officiating. Interment was
in the Belmond Cemetery near Belmond. The Tenold Funeral Home was in charge
of the arrangements.
Music was provided by Eldoris Bunnell, organist
and
Marilyn Janssen, vocalist. Ushers were Loren Bamford and Francis Morris.
Casket bearers were Timothy Shahan, Dale Allen Shahan, Bruce Shahan, Todd
Benson, Bruce Wilder and Dale Andrew Shahan.
Edith Marjorie Johnson, the daughter of Carlton and
Adina (Hefte) Johnson was born on April 2, 1916 in rural Kanawha. She was
baptized and confirmed at the St. Olaf Lutheran Church in rural Belmond.
They lived in Belmond while Stanley worked for General
Mills and Central Soya. In 1945 they moved to Amarillo, Texas but returned
to Belmond that same year. After a medical retirement from Central Soya,
they moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, where they lived and worked in a mobile
home park. They returned to Iowa in 1993 and lived in Ames.
Edith was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in
Belmond.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband,
Stanley in 2000; son, Roger Shahan; two grandchildren, Cindy and Danny;
sisters, Laura and Aileen; and brothers, Gaylen and Clair, and Stanley in
infancy.
Survivors are her children and spouses, Allen and Jody Shahan of Yarnell, Aarizona, Karen and Tony Benson of Shallowater, Texas,
daughter-in-law, Mary Shahan of Ames; nine grandchildren, 12
great-grandchildren; sister, Carol Christenson and her husband, Earl of
Forest City, Wilma Friesleben of Belmond; brothers and sisters-in-law,
Dudley and Janice Johnson of Kanawha, Arland and Avis Johnson of Hector,
Minnesota, Gary and Barbara Johnson of St. Johns, Newfoundland; and many
nieces and nephews.

Tamara Lee Barkema Clifton

Tamara Lee Barkema Clifton, 35, died on Wednesday, May 9,
2001, in the Candler
Hospital in Savannah, Georgia. She was a native of Belmond, and a BHS
graduate of the class of 1984; was a member of the Immanuel Reformed Church;
and was an insurance agent.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 12, in the
Thompson-Strickland-Waters Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. John Powell
officiating. Burial was in the Screven County Memorial Cemetery in Sylvania,
Georgia.
Survivors include her husband, Terald E. Clifton of
Savannah; two step-daughters, Stormi Clifton and Erica Clifton, both of
Bettendorf, Iowa; two sons, Taylor Clifton and Travis Clifton, both of
Savannah; her parents, Byron and Sherry Lockman Barkema of Ely, Minnesota;
two sisters, Tracy Colby of Villa Park, Illinois and Lisa Barker of Garner;
one brother, Lonnie Barkema of Sheffield; her paternal grandparents, Lambert
and Gen Barkema of Belmond; and several nieces and nephews.

William Swenson

William (Bill) Eugene Swenson, 63, died on Wednesday, May 9, 2001,
at the Iowa
Lutheran Hospital, Des Moines, of a heart attack.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 12, 2001, at
the
St. Stephen's Lutheran Church in Urbandale. Burial was in the Resthaven
Cemetery, West Des Moines.
Bill, the son of William and Sadie (Terhark) Swenson,
was born at Lake Cornelia. He graduated from the Belmond High School in 1955 and
from Waldorf College in 1957.
On June 26, 1965, he married Janice Van Dusseldorp in the Central Lutheran Church, Des Moines. They had two children
and lived in the Clive/Urbandale areas for 35 years.
Bill served in the US Army. He was employed at
Firestone, Water Solutions Incorporated as a service technician and also
worked at Roto Rooter.
Bill was a former Boy Scout Leader and was a charter
member of the Sons of Norway. He was a member of the St. Stephen Lutheran Church. He
also enjoyed fishing.
Preceding him in death were his father, William Sidney
Swenson; his brother-in-law, Bernard Miller; a nephew, Todd Larkin; and a
niece, Diane Bandstra.
Survivors include his wife, Jan Swenson of Clive; mother,
Sadie B. Swenson of Belmond; daughter and husband, Rhonda and Bill Banwart
of Des Moines; son, Aaron Swenson of Clive; sisters, Genevieve Larkin of
Belmond and Karen Miller of Muskogee, Oklahoma; brother, Richard Swenson of
Springville; granddaughter, Madison Banwart of Des Moines; and grandson,
Zachary Nelson of Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Sylvia Arends Webb
May 10, 2001
Sylvia M. Webb, 90, of Akron, Ohio, died on Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at the Windsor
Care Center in Akron.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m.,
on Friday, May
11, 2001, at the Alexander Cemetery near Alexander, with Pastor Tony Hershey
officiating. A gathering will take place after the service at the Outpost in
Alexander.
Sylvia Mabel Arends, the daughter of John and Hattie
Arends, was born on June 7, 1910.
She graduated from the Iowa State Teachers College and
taught in Iowa Schools. She met Frederick Webb while in college and was
married in 1940. Fred died in 1997. He was born in Toronto, Canada, and was
a Chemical Engineer for Firestone Tire and Rubber Company. After retirement
they traveled the U.S. extensively.
They were members of the Methodist Church.
Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents; husband;
and four brothers, Jesse Leonard, Bennie and Robert.
There are no immediate survivors.

William "Bill" Goemaat

William "Bill" Goemaat, 70, of Belmond, died on Sunday, May 13, 2001, at his
home in Belmond.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, May 16, at the
Wright Christian Reformed Church, with Pastor Chuck Walton officiating.
Burial will take place in the Wright Christian Reformed Church Cemetery.
William, the son of Jan and Neeltje (Star) Goemaat, was
born on October 24, 1930 in Hilversum, The Netherlands. He grew up in the
Netherlands where he was educated. He came to the United States in 1950.
William was united in marriage to Helen Crum on March
11, 1952 in Hollandale, Minnesota. The couple started farming at Leland,
Iowa. They later farmed south of Kanawha. In 1989 they moved to Belmond.
William enjoyed traveling, model trains, was interested
in history, and was an avid reader.
He was a member of the Wright Christian Reformed Church of
Kanawha. He helped the Belmond Community Care Car as a driver and served as
President. He was involved with the American Cancer Society and spoke openly
about his cancer.
Preceding him in death were his parents; and a
sister-in-law; and one niece.
William is survived by his wife, Helen; one daughter
and son-in-law, Denise and Mike Vasey of Grand Island, Nebraska; two sons
and daughters-in-law, John and Jean (Sorenson) Goemaat of Bennett, Iowa and
Marv and Mary Goemaat of Belmond; seven grandchildren, Amy, Alex, and Brian Vasey; Will, and Kristina Goemaat; and Justin and Dan Goemaat; one sister,
Hinda Hospic of the Netherlands; and a brother, Bas Goemaat of the
Netherlands; and a step-mother who lives in Switzerland.

Lee O. Robbins

Lee O. Robbins, 72, of Goodell, died on Monday, May 21, 2001, at
the Mercy Medical
Center North Iowa in Mason City.
Funeral services were held on Friday, May 25, 2001, at
the
St Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Belmond, with Fr. David Beckman
officiating. Interment was in the St. Francis Cemetery near Belmond. Military
rites were conducted by the Goodell and Belmond Honor Guard.
Music was provided by Janyce Kinseth, organist
and Maxine Whitty, cantor. Lector was Donna Kopriva. Eucharistic Ministers were
Regina Lamoureux, Mona McLaughlin, Sharon Johnson, Mary Ann Spitler, and
Veronica Benetti. Ushers were Raymond Lowenberg, Leroy Carolus and Joe
McLaughlin. Honorary bearers were all the Belmond Knights of Columbus Members of
Council 8110. Casket bearers were the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus.
Lee Oren Robbins, the son of Lee R. and Mildred
(Fuller) Robbins was born on April 18, 1929 in Goodell. He graduated from
the
Goodell High School in 1947. He served in the United States Air Force in
Guam from 1947 until 1951. He received a Good Conduct Medal and a Far East
Occupation Medal.
Lee was united in marriage to Deloris Green on December
27, 1952. He worked for General Mills from 1951 to 1964, and then Central
Soya until his retirement in 1992. He was a member of the Goodell Fire
Department, served as Mayor of Goodell from 1968 to 1995, achieved a
honorary lifetime membership in the Knights of Columbus, and was a long time
member of the St. Mary's Church in Goodell and the St. Francis Xavier Church in
Belmond. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, traveling, and helping farmers with
their crops.
Preceding him in death was his father.
Survivors are his wife, Deloris of Goodell; his
children and their spouses, Kenneth and Rene Robbins of Belmond, Rita and
Tom Christians of Belmond, Larry and his fiancée, Phyllis TerHark of Goodell,
David and Linda Robbins of Goodell, Dale and Lynn Robbins of Klemme and Rebecca
and Rick Munoz of Ottumwa; grandchildren, Tony, Matt, Kristina and Natalie
Robbins, Clinton and his wife, Andrea and their son, Cale, Nichole, and Neil
Christians, Amanda, and Mark Robbins and his daughter, Jasmine, Beth, James,
and Rachel Robbins, Jill Logston and her husband, Richie and their children,
Evan and Mikaylah, Jennifer and Vina Munoz; his mother, Mildred Robbins of
Belmond; brother, Eugene Robbins of Forest City; sisters and
brothers-in-law, Norma and Tom Zelsdorf of Burlington, Janice and Russ
Pascally of Springville, Tennessee and Maxine Johnson of Belmond; and many nieces
and nephews.

Ardella J. Nelson

Ardella J. Nelson, 75, died on Monday, May 21, 2001, at the Good Shepherd Care
Center in Mason City. Interment was in the Ell Township Cemetery near Klemme.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, May 24, at the
United Methodist Church in Klemme, with Rev. Curtis DeVance officiating.
Music was provided by Muriel Schulz, organist. Usher was Everett Guth.
Casket bearers were Calvin Bruggeman, Raymond Schoenwetter, Robert Scott
and Arlyn Waddinghm.
Ardella Jean Nelson, daughter of Verner and Jenny (Meinderts)
Nelson was born on August 17, 1925, in Hancock County.
She attended and graduated from the Klemme High School
and attended Hamilton Business College in Mason City. She worked in Mason
City for a time before going to Madison, Wisconsin where she was the
Secretary for the Bishop of the First United Methodist Church in Madison.
She later started her own copying business in Madison.
Ardella moved back to Klemme and after her health began
to fail, she entered the Good Shepherd Care Center in Mason City.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors are a sister, Erdene Halferty of Keosauqua;
niece, Sue Rardin and her husband, Bill of Bloomfield; and a nephew, Brian Halferty of Altoona.

Leona Priebe, 89, of Klemme, died on
Saturday,
May 26, 2001, at the Muse-Norris Hospice in Mason City.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May
29, at 1:30 p.m., at the Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ in Klemme, with
burial in the Ell Township Cemetery, Klemme. Visitation will be held on Monday from 4-7:00
p.m., at the Tenold Funeral Home in Klemme, and at the church one hour prior to
the
services.

Paul Veldhouse

Paul Calvin Veldhouse, died on Monday, May 28, 2001, at the Belmond Health Care
Center in Belmond. Funeral services were held on Friday, June 1, 2001, at the
United Methodist Church, Goodell, with Rev. Curtis DeVance officiating.
Interment was in the Amsterdam Cemetery, Goodell.
Music was provided by Shirley Kuhlers, organist. Ushers
were Brittany Anderson, Aaron Anderson, Anna Skogerboe, Amy Skogerboe,
Nicholas Barillas and Rachel Barillas. Casket bearers were Gene Stille,
Steve Stille, Mark Stille, Tom Stille, Larry Langlitz and Larry Boller.
Paul Calvin Veldhouse, the son of Nick and Laura (Pehl)
Veldhouse was born on November 3, 1910, at Holmes, Iowa.
He graduated from the University of Iowa with a pharmacy
degree. He married Florence Mason in May of 1936, and they would have
celebrated 65 years of marriage on the day Paul died.
Paul and his brother, Jim ran the Goodell Elevator for
a few years before Paul began farming north of Goodell. He farmed for a
number of years with his son-in-law, Bob Stille. He worked for the USDA
sealing and resealing corn. Paul and Florence built a new home in Goodell in
1947, and continued to live there until they entered the Belmond Health Care
Center. He also built a cabin in Clear Lake, where they lived for a time.
They loved to travel and pull their camper trailer,
Paul liked country music and played the guitar. He loved to spend time with
his family and was a member of the United Methodist Church in Goodell.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter,
Virginia Stille; and brothers, Dick, George and Jim Veldhouse.
Survivors include his wife, Florence; son-in-law, Bob Stille of Britt; granddaughters, Linda S. Skogerboe and her fiance, Craig
Meints of Goodell, Laurie S. Anderson and her husband, Doug of Nevada and Lisa
S. Barillas and her husband, Chris of Clear Lake; great-grandchildren,
Brittany and Aaron Anderson, Anna and Amy Skogerboe and Nicholas and Rachel
Barillas; and sister, Edna Garnett of New Hampton.

Derrick Anderson

Derrick Tyler Anderson, 15, of Minden, Nebraska, formerly of Coulter, died
on Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at his home in Minden.
Graveside services were held on Saturday, June 2, at the
Belmond Cemetery near Belmond, with Pastor C. Lee Gamblin officiating.
Interment was in the Belmond Cemetery.
Derrick, the son of Gail and Sherry Peyton Anderson,
was born on December 17, 1985, in Iron Mountain, Michigan. The family later
moved to the Clarion and Coulter area.
Derrick attended the CAL-Latimer-Dows schools. He and his
family had recently moved to Nebraska. Derrick was currently in the 9th
grade in the Minden High School. Derrick enjoyed playing baseball.
Derrick is survived by his parents, Gail and Sherry of
Minden, Nebraska; two brothers, Jesse and Caleb at home; maternal
grandmother, Diane Carlson of Kingsford, Michigan; a maternal grandfather,
Jerry Peyton of Minden, Nebraska; paternal grandmother, Jolene Smith of
Clarion; maternal great-grandparents, Verla Lundahl of Clarion and Don Olson
of Aurora, Wisconsin; uncles, Kyle Anderson of Clarion, Joel Anderson of
Kearney, Nebraska; and an aunt, Lisa Peyton of Belmond.

Jessie Halfpap Thayer
June 7, 2001
Jessie L. (Halfpap) Thayer, 80, of Rockwell, died
on Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at the Muse
Norris Hospice Impatient Unit. Services were held on Tuesday, June 5, at the Swaledale
United Methodist Church.
Jessie was born on August 18, 1920, the daughter of John
and Lena (Gartz) Halfpap on a farm near Belmond. She graduated from the Belmond
High School in the class of 1938. At the age of 18, she began teaching in a
country school and did so for the following six years.
Jessie met Orval Thayer while attending high school in
Belmond. They were united in marriage on February 7, 1940 near Sioux Falls.
They began their married lives farming near Belmond. In 1947 the couple
moved to a farm near Burchinal, which they farmed until retirement in 1997.
Jessie enjoyed the farm animals and her garden,
especially her flowers, which she shared with many. Jessie was a member of
the Swaledale United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.
She was preceded in death by her parents;
and three
brothers-in-law.
Survivors include her husband; two sons and one
daughter-in-law, Lynn and Laura Thayer of Sheffield and Bill Thayer of Clear
Lake; one daughter and son-in-law, April and Dave Sherwood of Rockwell;
seven grandchildren; four step-children; five great-grandchildren; three
step-great-grandchildren; three sisters; and one brother.
