Willard C. Latham
April 5, 2001
Willard Chester Latham, 89, died on Sunday, April 1,
2001, at the Hampton Care Center after
a lengthy illness. Services were held on Wednesday, April 4, at 1:30 p.m., at
the
Nazareth Lutheran Church in Coulter with Pastor Mary Peterson
officiating. Burial was in the Coulter Cemetery near Coulter.
Willard Latham was born on February 18, 1912, at
Alexander. He graduated from the Alexander High School in 1929 and from
Iowa State College in 1936 with a B.S. degree in dairy husbandry.
After college, Willard joined his father in dairy
farming near Alexander, then a seed business in 1947, producing seed
oats for retail which developed from a local business to the six-state
regional company known as Latham Seed Company.
On June 30, 1938, Willard was married to Evelyn
Johansen of Latimer. Sons, Bill, Don and Tom followed in Willard's
footsteps by joining the family seed business, which Tom left in 1994
when elected as Iowa's 5th District Congressman. Bob is President of
Latham and Associates, an energy consulting firm and Jim operates a vending
machine business.
Willard was a county 4-H president and state 4-H
secretary, president of his church and finance chairman during the
church's building project, served on the Alexander School Board for 13
years, as president most of the time and was a former Franklin County Farm
Bureau president and secretary. He was director of the Iowa Crops and Soils
Research Council, the North Central Research Association, the Iowa
Committee for Agricultural Development, the Iowa Crop Improvement
Association, the Iowa State University Alumni Association, the Iowa Seed
Association, the Iowa State Agronomy Department, and the College of
Agriculture, the Iowa and American Soybean Association as president and
secretary.
He received the Iowa Soybean Association's State Achievement
Award, and in 1987 was named as Honorary Lifetime Member of the American
Soybean Association. Willard was a member of the Order of the Knoll of
Iowa State and is an honorary member of both the Iowa Crop Improvement
Association and Iowa Seed Association.
He also spent many years on the
Board of Regents of Waldorf College at Forest City. In the 1950's,
Willard served as one of four members of the USDA Advisory Committee on
Soybeans and Flax. He also served as a member of the USDA Plant Variety
Protection Board.
The Iowa State Alumni Merit Award was awarded to
Willard, a life membership of the ISU Alumni Association, and the
Distinguished Service Award of the Franklin Co. ISU Alumni Association.
He also received the Distinguished Service Award of Alpha Gamma Rho, and
"Order of the Crescent" from its Educational Foundation.
Willard was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse
and Mamie Meyer Latham; a twin brother, Wilbur; and an infant daughter,
Carol Jean.
Survivors are his wife, Evelyn; five sons and
daughters-in-law, Willard J. (Bill) and Linda Latham of Alexander,
Robert and Sue Latham of Cedar Rapids, James and Marcia Latham of Clear
Lake, Donald and Marilyn Latham of Alexander and Thomas and Kathy
Latham of Alexander; 12 grandchildren, John, Christopher, Jesse, Anne,
Paige, Jed, Jeremy, Angela, Sarah, Justin, Jennifer and Jill; one
great-granddaughter, Emerson Ann; and many nieces and nephews.

Jason M. Abbas
April 12, 2001
Jason M. Abbas, 26, died on Tuesday,
April 3, 2001, at his home in rural Belmond of an apparent suicide.
Services were held on Monday, April 9, at the St. Peter's United Church of
Christ in rural Geneva, with burial in the church cemetery.
Jason was born on October 15,
1974 in Hampton, the son of Frederick and Mary Harris Abbas. He
graduated from the Ackley-Geneva High School in 1994, Ellsworth
Community College in 1996, and Iowa State University in 1998
with distinction and a BS in agronomy. He did internships at
Pioneer and Dupont. Following graduation he worked as a
production agronomist for J.C. Robinson Seed Co. (Golden
Harvest) in Belmond.
Jason was active in the
Belmond Jaycees and was named Rookie of the Year for 2000, for
his efforts with Senior Citizen Bingo and the July 4
Celebration. He enjoyed fishing.
Preceding him in death were
his maternal grandparents; and his paternal grandfather.
He is survived by his
parents; brothers, Scott and James all of Geneva; brother, Mark
of Tulsa, Oklahoma; and grandmother, Carrie Abbas of Geneva.

Debra Obrecht
April 12, 2001
Debra Jayne Obrecht, 41, of Belmond, died on
Sunday, April 8, 2001, at the Belmond Medical Center after a
twenty two month battle with cancer.
Funeral services were held on
Wednesday, April 11, at the St. Olaf Lutheran Church near Belmond,
with Pastor Lowell Halvorson officiating. Interment was in the
St. Olaf Church Cemetery.
Music was provided by Carol
Severson, organist, Janyce Kinseth, accompanist and Steve and Joleen Rolland, vocal duet. Ushers were Raymond Burras, Alfred
Johnson and Rodney Toftey. Honorary casket bearers were Mike
Laake, Daryn Obrecht, Lloyd Christenson, Kae Myers, Tim Griffin,
Ralph Janssen and Fred Wenzel, Jr. Casket bearers were Jared Rokke, B. J. Mayer, Jason Rokke, Steve Little, Josh Obrecht and
Steve Prohaska.
Debra will be remembered for
her love of others, her sense of humor, her great compassion for
her patients and their families. She accepted her fate with
dignity and grace.
Debra Ellingston was born on
September 21, 1959, at Belmond, the daughter of Raymond and
Rebecca (Janssen) Ellingston. She was baptized and confirmed in
the St. Olaf Lutheran Church of rural Belmond, where she remained a
life time member. She graduated from the Belmond High School in
1978, received her LPN from NIACC in Mason City, certification
as an Operating Room Technician from DMACC in Ankeny and her
Associate Arts degree as a registered nurse from NIACC in Mason
City.
She married DaLon Obrecht at the St. Olaf Lutheran Church on July
31, 1982.
She worked for many years at
the Belmond Community Hospital and most recently at the Belmond
Health Care Center where a nursing scholarship has been
established in her name.
Deb was preceded in death by
her grandparents, Elling and Nettie Ellingston and Herman and
Blanche Janssen; and her father-in-law, Edward Obrecht.
Deb is survived by her three children, Jeffery, 16, David, 13
and Katie, 9, all at home; her parents, Raymond and Rebecca Ellingston; one sister and brother-in-law, Charlotta and Paul
Rokke of Belmond; one brother, Lynn Ellingston of Belmond; the
children's father, DaLon Obrecht; mother-in-law, Evelyn Obrecht
of Belmond; brothers-in-law, DaDean Obrecht of Chicago,
Illinois and Dana Obrecht of Warrensburg, Missouri;
sisters-in-law, Denise Mayer and her husband, Keith of Osage,
Claire Obrecht, Heather McLemore and Brenda Benson; nieces and
nephews, Austin and Brianna Ellingston, Jared and Jason Rokke,
Gina and Steve Prohaska, Daryn, Josh and Melissa Obrecht and her
fiance, Jon Barkema, B. J. and Stacy Mayer, Jennifer and Steve
Little; great niece and nephew, Kaitlyn and Lucas Prohaska; and many
aunts, uncles and cousins.
Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society,
Wright County Hospice, or a 529 plan established for her
children's college education.

James A. Yeakel
April 19, 2001
James A. Yeakel, 54, of
Kanawha, died on Monday, April 9, 2001, at the Kanawha Community
Home.
Funeral services were held
at the Kanawha Lutheran Church, Kanawha on Friday, April 13,
2001. Rev. Dr. William H. Breen officiated at the service.
Interment was in the Amsterdam Township Cemetery, Kanawha. Military
services were by the Kanawha American Legion, Severson Post #77.
Special music was provided
by Twila Schroeder, organist. Ushers were Arlan Anderson and
Vern Dietel. Honorary casket bearers were
Gardon Osby, Harlan Carlson, John Van Hove, Jerry Hobscheidt
and Marvin Nuehring. Casket bearers were Larry Anderson, Merlyn
Assink, Mike Christians, Daryl Ruter, Jim Weiss and Mike Yeakel.
Jim, the son of Duane "Duke"
and Virginia (Townsend) Yeakel, was born on May 31, 1946, in
Garner. Jim lived in Kanawha most of his life. He attended the
Kanawha Community School and graduated from the Kanawha High School
in 1964. Jim entered the Army in 1965, and served his country
for two years. Following his discharge, Jim returned to Kanawha
and was employed by his uncle at Oral's Auto Repair.
In 1972, Jim married Janet
Jackson at the Kanawha Lutheran Church. Six years later the
couple purchased Oral's Auto Repair, which became Yeakel Garage.
Yeakel Garage has been a part of the Yeakel family since 1923.
Jim ran his business until the summer of 2000 when he became
ill.
Jim was an avid race fan. He
drove, sponsored and supported the racing industry for many
years. He was also a member of the Kanawha Volunteer Fire
Department for 10 years. Jim enjoyed spending time with his
family and friends.
Jim is preceded in death by
his parents Duane "Duke" and Virginia Yeakel.
Survivors include two
daughters, Jennifer Eden and her husband, Allen of Clear Lake
and Jamie Yeakel of Clear lake; two brothers, Greg Yeakel and
his wife, Sue and their children, Gabe, Rowena, and Nate of
Story City and Randy Yeakel and his wife, Darla and their
children, Mackenzie, Keaton, Quinn and MaCoy of Kanawha; and several
aunts, uncles and cousins.

Estella Hansen
April 19, 2001
Estella Hansen, 90, of
Clarion, died on Thursday, April 12, 2001, at the Clarion Health Care
Center in Clarion.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 14, at the Church of
Christ in Clarion, with Michael Whaley officiating. Burial was
in the
Evergreen Cemetery in Clarion.
Estella Marie Smith was born on June 1, 1911, in rural Wright
County to Sheldon and Rosa Belle (Shannon) Smith. She attended
school in Clarion, graduating with the class of 1929.
On June 21, 1929, she was united in marriage to H. Racine Wigg. To this union four children were born, Marjorie, Donna,
Phyllis and Robert. Racine died in 1960, and she later married
Hans H. Hansen. Hans died in 1972.
Estella worked for the Department of Human Services for 25
years before retiring. After retirement she worked part time for
the County Engineers Office for 10 years.
She was a member of the Clarion Church of Christ, was a member
of the Royal Neighbors of America, the Rebecca Lodge, the V.F.W.
Auxiliary, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Lady Firemen
of America.
Estella was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, H.
Racine Wigg and Hans H. Hansen; four brothers, Guy Smith, Dale
Smith, Donald Smith and Lyle Smith; one sister, Helen Johnson;
two grandchildren, Linda Arthur and Terry Trees. Her son, Robert Wigg died
on Friday, April 13, 2001.
She is survived by three daughters and one son-in-law,
Marjorie and Paul Trees of Belmond, Donna Belle Orte of Clarion
and
Phyllis Arthur of Mason City; her daughter-in-law, Imogene Wigg
of Clarion; 19 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and five
great-great-grandchildren.

Robert Wigg
April 19, 2001
Robert Wigg, 61, of
Clarion, died on Friday, April 13, 2001, at the Community
Memorial Hospital in Clarion.
Funeral services were held
on Monday, April 16, at at the Church of Christ in Clarion, with
Michael Whaley officiating. Burial was in the Lake Lutheran
Cemetery in rural Renwick.
Robert Wigg was born on May 4,
1939, at Clarion to H. Racine and Estella (Smith) Wigg. He
attended school at Clarion.
On November 26, 1961, he was
united in marriage to Imogene Heggen at the Church of Christ in
Clarion.
He worked in the
construction of grain elevators and feed mills for Younglove
Construction, Lambert Hamlin Construction, Todd and Sargent
Construction and also for Hagie Manufacturing for a few years.
He was a member of the
Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Rebekah Lodge, Encampment and
Canton Grand Patriach of the Grand Encampment of Iowa from 1999
to 2000. He was a member of the Royal Members of America and the
Clarion Church of Christ. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and
traveling.
He was preceded in death by
his parents.
He is survived by his four
children and spouses, Richard and Angel Wigg of Siloam Springs,
Arkansas, Katheryn Wigg of Farmingville, New York, Nicolene and
Alan Sorensen of Ankeny and Heather Wigg of Montrose,
Minnesota; four grandchildren, Gwen and Adric Sorensen, Kaitelen
Wigg and Devorah Linford; three sisters, Marjorie Trees of
Belmond, Donna Orte of Clarion and Phyllis Arthur of Mason
City.

Robert Tomson, 79, of Belmond,
died on Tuesday, April 17, 2001. Funeral services will be held
on Friday,
April 20, at 1:30 p.m., at the Trinity Lutheran Church, with Rod Hopp
officiating. Burial will be in the Belmond Cemetery. Visitation
will be from 4-8:00 p.m., on Thursday, April 19, at the Dugger Funeral
Home.

James McVey, Jr.
May 17, 2001
James Leland McVey, Jr.,
of Alexander, died of pancreatic cancer on April 21, 2001, at the
Belmond Medical Center in Belmond.
A Memorial Liturgy of the Word will be
celebrated on Saturday, May 26, 2001, at 1:30 p.m., at the St.
Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Belmond.
James, the son of James L. and Mary A.
(Mamie) Fulton McVey, was born on February 15, 1932 in Belmond.
He is survived by his children, James McVey
of San Diego, California, Brian McVey and his wife, Bobbi of
Belmond, Denise Scheller and her husband, Jim of Windsor,
Colorado, Stacey McVey of Des Moines and Michael McVey of
Baltimore, Maryland; former wife, Maxine McVey Whitty; his
grandchildren, Nathan, Jacob, Adam, and Kaylie; a half-sister,
Jeananne; and a sister, Patty.
James body was donated to the University of
Iowa College of Medicine.

"Jeanie" Hiemstra
May 3, 2001
Catherine Jeannine "Jeanie" Hiemstra, 51, of
Clarion, died on Tuesday, April 24, 2001, at the Trinity Regional
Hospital in Fort Dodge.
Memorial services were held on
Saturday, April 28, at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home in Belmond, with
the Rev. Carl Hiemstra officiating. Burial will be at a later
date in the Graceland Cemetery near Rowan. Jeanie donated her body
to the University of Iowa Hospitals for medical research.
Jeanie, the daughter of
Lester L. (Shorty) and Lillian McAlpine Smith, was born on November
28, 1949, in Hampton. She grew up on Snarl Street near Rowan.
Jeanie attended school in Rowan and Belmond, graduating from the
Belmond High School in 1967.
On March 10, 1967, Jeanie
married Merle Hilpipre. They had two children, a son, Todd and a
daughter, Angela.
On March 30, 1988, Jeanie
married David Hiemstra. The couple made their home in Clarion.
Jeanie was a life long
resident of the Belmond, Rowan and Clarion communities. She
worked at City Directory in Belmond.
Jeanie enjoyed reading,
quilting and sitting on her porch swing watching a good
lightning show. She most enjoyed the time she spent with her
grandchildren.
Jeanie was preceded in death
by her parents; and one brother, John in March, 2001.
Survivors include her
husband, David: a daughter, Angela Humphery and her husband,
Doug of Clarion; a son, Todd Hilpipre and his wife, Brenda of
Clarion; four grandchildren, Candace, Christopher and Cayla
Humphery and Alex Hilpipre; two step-sons, Mike and Todd; four
step-grandchildren, Jordan and Katie Chapman and Seth and Sarah Hiemstra; two brothers, Mike Smith and his wife, Charlene of
Rowan and Jim Smith and his wife, Judy of Belmond; and numerous
nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Laurine M. Proctor
May 3, 2001
Laurine M. Proctor, 83, of Sheffield, formerly
of Clear Lake, died on Saturday, April 28, 2001, at the Sheffield
Care Center.
Laurine M. Park was born on January 11, 1918, north of Ventura, to
Anton and Elsie (Holiatz) Park. She was baptized as an infant
and attended country school. Laurine was confirmed at the St. John's
Evangelical Lutheran Church in Garner, on April 24, 1932.
On November 3, 1939, she was
united in marriage with Thomas R. Proctor in Garner. They farmed
in the Swaledale area and the Meservey area after 1960. In 1976,
they retired and moved to Clear Lake. Thomas died in 1981. In
October 1993, she moved to the Sheffield Care Center where she
had lived since.
She was a member of the
Lutheran Church and the Ladies Aide.
Laurine was preceded in death
by her parents; and husband.
She is survived by three
sons and daughters-in-law, Marvin R. and Jane Proctor of Mason
City, Marty A. and Shirley Proctor of Thornton and Duane and Jewel
Proctor of Carroll; daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Ardell
VanOsten of Meservey; nine grandchildren, Alanna Proctor, Mark
Proctor, Robin VanOsten, Sandy VanOsten, Matthew Proctor and his
wife, Janet, Amy Proctor and a special friend, Chad Slagle,
Nathan Proctor, Rachel Proctor and Kellie Proctor; two
great-grandchildren, Jordan and Spencer Proctor; one sister,
Lula Read of Clear Lake; and several nieces and nephews.

Gerald "Red" Whipple

Gerald "Red" Whipple, 78, of Belmond, died
on
Sunday, April 29, 2001, at the Belmond Medical Center in Belmond.
Funeral services were held
on Tuesday, May 1, at the United Methodist Church in Belmond,
with Pastor Janet Wearda officiating. Burial was in the Belmond
Cemetery. Military rites were given by the Belmond Honor Guard.
Gerald, the son of Grant and
Ruby Parks Whipple, was born on October 7, 1922 near Clarion. He
attended country schools and graduated from the Belmond High School
in 1940.
Gerald entered the U.S. Navy
in August of 1941. He served on the USS Missoula during WW II.
He was stationed at Brookland Navy Hospital and Navy Hospital in
Portsmouth, New Hampshire. As a corpsman, he worked in the Navy
dispensary. Red was also a member of Occupational Forces in
North China. He received the Navy Good Conduct Medal, the
American Campaign Medal, and the American Defense Service Medal.
Red was honorably discharged from the Navy as a Chief Pharmacist
Mate.
On September 27, 1947, Red
was united in marriage to Anita Thompson in Trenton, Missouri.
The couple made their home in Belmond, where Red worked at
General Mills/Central Soya. He retired in 1982.
Anita and Red enjoyed
traveling, and spent many winters in Las Vegas after his
retirement. Red was a member of the General Mills Men's Club and
the Belmond V.F.W. He volunteered as a Care Car Driver and was a
member of the United Methodist Church in Belmond.
He was preceded in death by
his parents; one sister, Ruth Ann; and one brother, Merle.
He is survived by his wife,
Anita; one daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Joe Moore of
Plymouth; and two sons and daughters-in-law, Bob and Lois
Whipple of Britt and Dennis and Linda Whipple of West Jordan,
Utah; six grandchildren, Rob, Roxanne, Rick, Jason, Tyler and
Jodi; ten great-grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law,
Leslie (Whimp) and Shirley Whipple of Belmond; his
mother-in-law, Helen Nelson of Belmond; three sisters-in-law,
Betty Thompson of Belmond, Ruth Thompson of New York and Iola
Whipple of Mason City; four brothers-in-law and their wives, Duan and Linda Thompson of Belmond, Bill and Dory Thompson of
Mason City, Jack and Marlys Thompson of Mesa, Arizona and Jim
Wood of Greensboro, North Carolina.
