Lowell Petersen

Lowell Dale "Pete" Petersen, 68, of Durant, Oklahoma, died
on Sunday, June 3, 2001,
at his home in Durant.
Graveside services were held on Friday, June 8, at
the
Amsterdam Cemetery near Goodell. Interment was in the Amsterdam Cemetery
near Goodell. Casket bearers were the Veterans of the Belmond Honor Guard and
the
American Legion of Goodell.
Lowell, the son of Clarence and Inez Oleson Petersen,
was born on February 21, 1933, in Hollandale, Minnesota. He went to grade
school in Hollandale and LeRoy, Minnesota. After moving to Iowa he graduated
from the Latimer High school.
He served in the United States Army in Europe and then
he returned to Mason City, where he worked as a union carpenter.
Lowell was
united in marriage to Thelma Alm in 1974 in Colorado. The couple later moved
to Oklahoma. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and collecting coins.
Preceding him in death were his wife, Thelma in 1997;
and one brother.
Survivors are his four sisters, Darlene Huebner of
Anthony, Florida, Lucille Lauden and her husband, Ole of Thornton, Janet
Roderick of Fort Dodge and Carole Molencamp and her husband, Ron of Des Moines.

Donald Hensel
June 6, 2001
Donald Paul Hensel, 79, died suddenly on Tuesday, June 5, 2001, at his home
in Alexander.
Funeral services were held on Friday, June 8, at
the Immanuel
United Church of Christ in Latimer, with Rev. Jeff Long officiating.
Interment was in the Alexander Cemetery near Alexander. Military rites were
at the graveside by the Hansen-Have Post 658.
Music was provided by Roger Mollenbeck, organist
and Dave
Dahlgren, vocalist. Honorary bearer was Christie Hensel. Casket bearers were
Andy Hensel, Vic Steding, Lindsey Hensel, Clayton Crawford, Allison Hensel
and Marlin Hopkey.
Donald Paul Hensel, the son of Oscar W. and Marie E. (Arends)
Hensel, was born on September 15, 1921, at Alexander.
He attended and graduated from the Alexander High
School. He entered the United States Army during WW II and served from 1942
until 1946, including a campaign in northern France at the Normandy Beach.
Donald was united in marriage to Mabryn "Connie"
Schaefer at Lake Park on April 21, 1946. They made their home in Oelwein,
where Don owned and operated a service station.
In 1948, they moved to Alexander where they purchased a
grocery store. He and his two brothers started an egg produce and trucking
company. Later he became active in farming and continued to operate the
trucking company.
He enjoyed time at the family cabin on Ten Mile Lake,
Minnesota, fishing and boating.
Donald was a member of the Immanuel United Church of
Christ in Latimer where he served as Deacon and Elder.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Oscar and
Marie; his wife, Connie; and a brother, Ed.
Survivors are his sons and daughters-in-law, Paul and
Diane Hensel of Alexander and Mark and Marci Hensel of Monticello, Wisconsin;
grandchildren, Andy, Christie, Lindsey and Allison Hensel; and a brother,
Carroll Hensel of Stockton, Illinois.

Luvern
Pals
June 8, 2001
Luvern Edward Pals, 74, of Stanhope, died on Tuesday, June 5, 2001, at the Stratford
Care Center.
Memorial services were held on Saturday, June 9, at the
Bethany Reformed Church in Belmond. Interment was in the Immanuel Reformed
Church Cemetery in rural Belmond.
Luvern was born on December 15, 1926, the son of Hero J.
and Natte H. (Steenblock) Pals in Pleasant Township, Wright County. He
served in the Army during the Korean War and was wounded.
He was married to Joy Grempel on September 17, 1971.
They had one son, Cory.
He was employed by the Tomco Seed Co. before he entered the
service and for a time when he was out of the service. He drove a truck
sometimes for Tomco and this led him to his driving career. He drove a semi
for Hove Trucking for many years. The last years of his driving was for
Smithway Motor Express of Fort Dodge. He kept driving until about a year ago
when he was diagnosed with a brain tumor.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents; his
father, Hero in 1940; and his mother, Natte in 1928.
He is survived by his son, Cory of Red Oak.

Florence Veldhouse

Florence Marie Veldhouse, 86, died on Wednesday, June 6, 2001, at the Belmond
Health Care Center.
Funeral services were held on Friday, June 8, at the
United Methodist Church in Goodell, with Rev. Curtis DeVance officiating.
Interment was in the Amsterdam Cemetery near Goodell.
Music was provided by Shirley Kuhlers, organist. Ushers
were Brittany Anderson, Amy Skogerboe, Aaron Anderson, Nicholas Barillas,
Anna Skogerboe and Rachel Barillas. Casket bearers were Gene Stille, Tom
Stille, Steve Stille, Larry Langlitz, Mark Stille and Larry Boller.
Florence Marie Mason, the daughter of Walt and Madge
(Robbins) Mason was born on January 24, 1915 in Hancock County, Goodell.
She attended and graduated from the Goodell High School
and taught school in rural Twin Lakes Township.
Florence was united in marriage to Paul Veldhouse in
May of 1936, and they celebrated 65 years of marriage on the day her husband
died, May 28, 2001.
Paul and Florence built a new home in Goodell in 1947,
and continued to live there until they entered the Belmond Health Center.
They also built a cabin in Clear Lake, where they lived for a time. They
enjoyed traveling and pulling their camper trailer.
Florence was a member of the Goodell United Methodist
Church and the Ladies Aid. She enjoyed playing the piano.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Paul
on May 28, 2001; daughter, Virginia Stille; brother, Francis; and sister,
Louise.
Survivors are her son-in-law, Bob Stille of Britt;
granddaughters, Laurie S. Anderson and her husband, Doug of Nevada, Linda S.
Skogerboe of Goodell and her fiancée, Craig Meints and Lisa S. Barillas and her
husband, Chris of Clear Lake; and great-grandchildren, Britany and Aaron
Anderson, Anna and Amy Skogerboe, Nicholas and Rachel Barillas.

Dolores L. Ridder
June 8, 2001
Dolores Leona Alberta Ridder, 95, died on Thursday, June 7, 2001.
Funeral services were held at the United Methodist Church at
Klemme on Monday, June 11, with Rev. Curtis DeVance officiating. Interment
was in the Ell Township Cemetery near Klemme.
Music was provided by Margaret Tue, organist
and Lance
Arnold, vocalist. Ushers were John Schwichtenberg and Bob Scott . Casket
bearers were Randy Ridder, Jason Ridder, Dennis C. Ridder, Paul Kruse, Brian
Ruter and Blake Petersen.
Dolores Leona Alberta, the eldest daughter of Albert
and Lillie (Lau) Koerner, was born on July 21, 1905 in Klemme. She attended
school in Klemme and graduated with the first class to graduate from the Klemme
High School in 1924. She was a telephone operator for her father, with the
switchboard located in her home.
She was united in marriage to Levi Ridder on June 14,
1928 in Mason City. They lived in Manly, where they operated a billiard
parlor and came to Klemme in 1930, and operated a billiard parlor and
tavern.
Dolores was well know for her baking and quilting. She
and Levi traveled to Germany in 1958, the World's Fair in Brussels, Belgium
and the 1934 World's Fair in Chicago. She did some traveling after Levi's
death. She was an avid sports fan. She was a member of the United Methodist
Church and church circles in Klemme.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband;
infant daughter, Marilyn; granddaughter, Marlene; and brother, Kermit Koerner.
Survivors are her son and daughter-in-law, Roger and
Margot Ridder of Klemme; son, Dennis of Mason City; daughter, Maralee Ruter
of Britt; grandchildren, Monica Kruse, Randy Ridder, Sylvia Shell, Gloria
Bittner, Sonja Ridder, Wendy Grove, Brian Ruter, Jason Ruter, Marilyn
Petersen, Marian Klein and Dennis C. Ridder; 15 great-grandchildren;
brother, Gerald Koerner and his wife, Bernice of Klemme; and sisters, Valeria
Bridges of Klemme and Nova Gelner and her husband, Leon of Klemme.

Gail Bailey
June 11, 2001
Gail Marie (Cunningham) Bailey, 45, of Rowan, died on Sunday, June 10, 2001,
near Sanborn with her husband, Lynn as a result of injuries received in an
auto accident.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, June 14, 2001, at
the Belmond-Klemme High School Gymnasium, with Pastor Patrick Kennedy
officiating. Burial was in the Graceland Cemetery, Rowan.
Music was provided by Linda Dlouhy, pianist, Marilyn
Janssen, soloist and David Dittmer, bagpipes.
Gail, the daughter of Harold and Marcella (Green)
Cunningham, was born on December 8, 1955 at the Belmond Hospital. Gail
graduated from the Klemme High School in 1974.
On July 9, 1976 she married David
Lange. They made their home in rural Goodell. Gail would later attend NIACC
and graduate with a Nursing Degree in 1992.
Gail worked as a registered nurse at the Westview Care
Center and later worked as Director of Nursing at the Kanawha Community
Nursing Home.
Gail married Lynn Bailey on July 8, 2000 at the Little
Brown Church in Nashua. They made their home in Rowan.
She enjoyed photography, sewing and cooking, and loved
to garden. Gail loved spending time with family and enjoyed entertaining
friends and family.
A devoted church member, Gail belonged to the
Evangelical Free Church in Belmond. She was a member of Seed Savers
Exchange, a Master Gardener and was a member of the Gold Wing Road Riders
Association.
Survivors include her two daughters, Bethany Lange and
her fiancée, Matt Reineke of Estherville and Melanie Lange of Ames; her
parents, Harold and Marcella Cunningham of Goodell; three sisters, Sharon Millage and her husband, Don of Ames, Tracey Mikesh and her husband, Bill
of Franklin, Massachusetts and Corrine VandeVegte and her husband, Jeff of Rock
Valley, Iowa; two brothers, Dwight Cunningham of Goodell and Marc Cunningham
and his wife, Silvia of Portsmouth, Virginia; step-son, Shane Bailey and
wife, Lorell of Goldfield; three step-grandchildren, Heather, Patrick and
Michael Bailey; and several nieces and nephews.

Lynn Edwin Bailey

Lynn Edwin Bailey, 59, died on Sunday, June 10, 2001, near Sanborn with his
wife, Gail as a result of injuries received in an auto accident.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, June 14, 2001, at
the Belmond-Klemme High School Gymnasium, with Pastor Patrick Kennedy
officiating. Burial was in the Graceland Cemetery, Rowan. Military Rites were
provided by the Andrew Whitten American Legion Post #159 of Rowan.
Music was provided by Linda Dlouhy, pianist, Marilyn
Janssen, soloist and David Dittmer, bagpipes.
Casket bearers were Curt Aldrich, Mark Bruns, Lynn
Larson, Dennis Nusbum, Paul Schultz, Tim Smith, Denny Borrill, Vern Elston,
Jon Mandal, Merril Rasmussen and Mike Smith.
Lynn, the son of Edwin and Edna (Hansen) Bailey, was
born on January 5, 1942 in Clarion, Iowa. He grew up on a farm near Rowan and
attended Rowan Schools. Lynn graduated from the Rowan High School in 1961. After
high school Lynn attended trade school in Omaha and worked as an auto
mechanic in the Rowan area for over 25 years. In recent years he worked as a
road maintainer for Wright County.
In 1964 he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in
Vietnam in 1965-1966.
Lynn married Pauline Draves on July 15, 1967. They had
one son, Shane.
Lynn was very active in both law enforcement and fire
fighting for over 30 years where he served as Fire Chief. In law
enforcement, Lynn served as Rowan Marshall, worked for the Dows Police
Department, Belmond Police Reserves and Wright County Sheriff's Department.
He served the town of Rowan on the town council and was water
superintendent.
Lynn was married to Gail Cunningham on July 8, 2000 at
the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They made their home in Rowan.
Lynn enjoyed riding his motorcycle and was a member of
the Gold Wing Road Riders Association. He also enjoyed target shooting.
A devoted church member, Lynn belonged to the
Evangelical Free Church in Belmond. He was also Commander of the Andrew
Whitten Legion Post #159 in Rowan.
Preceding him in death were his parents; and one
grandson, Anthony.
Survivors include his son, Shane and wife, Lorell of
Goldfield; three grandchildren, Heather, Patrick and Michael; a sister, LaNell Brandes and her husband, John of Waterloo; a brother, Alvin Bailey
and his wife, Becky of Rowan; four nieces, Alyssa Hamlyn and her husband,
Brad of Waterloo, Linda Brandes and her husband, Kevin of Florida,
Anne-Marie and Kathryn Bailey of Rowan; two step-daughters, Bethany Lange
and her fiancée, Matt Reineke of Estherville and Melanie Lange of Ames;
father and mother-in-law, Harold and Marcella Cunningham of Goodell; and
numerous other relatives and friends.

Nellie E. Didio

Nellie E. Didio, 86, of Ft. Dodge, died on Thursday, June 21, 2001, at the Trinity Hospital,
in Ft. Dodge.
Services were held on Monday, June 25, at the Laufersweiler-Sievers Funeral Home, Ft. Dodge
and at the Corpus Christi Catholic Church, with burial in the Corpus Christie
Cemetery.
Nellie Dettman, was born on February 28, 1915 in Belmond.
She graduated from the Belmond High School. She married James 'Clem' Didio on
February 7, 1934, and they lived on farms near Clarion, Goldfield and Renwick.
They moved to Ft. Dodge in 1958. She and Clem often camped at Lake Cornelia.
Preceding her in death were her parents, John and
Roseanna Brennan Dettman; her husband in 1990; three sisters; and one
granddaughter.
Survivors include her son, Darwin and wife, Joyce
of
Duncombe; daughter, Beth Ann Grebner and husband, Leonard of Ft. Dodge;
sister, Edna Pickering and husband, Ernie; and many grandchildren and
great-grandchildren.

Donald G. Christiance, 94, of Klemme, died on Thursday, June 21, 2001, at
the Mercy Hospital in Mason
City.
Funeral services will be held on July 24, at 1:30 p.m., at the Immanuel Reformed United
Church of Christ in Klemme, with burial in the Ell Township Cemetery, Klemme.
Visitation will be held on June 23, from 5-7:00 p.m., at the Tenold Funeral Home in
Klemme and at the church one hour prior to the services.

Dorothy McCord

Dorothy Emma Steinlicht McCord, 79, of Pleasant Hill, died of cancer on
Thursdy,
June 21, 2001, at the Kavanagh House in Des Moines.
A memorial service was held on Tuesday, June 26,
at the Palmer Funeral Home in Rockwell City, with burial in the Rosehill Cemetery
there. Her body was cremated.
Dorothy was born on March 11, 1922 in Belmond. She married
John Helland McCord in 1940. They lived in Belmond, Webster City, Iowa
Falls, and Clear Lake. She moved to Pleasant Hill in 1999 to live with her
daughter, LaVonne. She enjoyed crocheting and her flower garden.
Survivors include her daughter; one granddaughter; and
several great-grandsons.

Bernard Haupt
July 3, 2001
Bernard Haupt, 79, of North Liberty, Iowa, formerly of Belmond, died
on
Tuesday, June 26, 2001, at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City, from
complications following surgery.
Funeral services were held on Friday, June 29, 2001, at the
Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond, with Pastor Rod Hopp officiating. Burial
was in the Belmond Cemetery, with Military Rites provided by the Belmond
Honor Guard.
Music was provided by Eldoris Bunnell, organist and
Marilyn Janssen, vocalist. Ushers were Loren Bamford and Francis Morris.
Sign translation, Sheryl Hill. Casket bearers were Laurence Boller, Harley Friesleben,
Roger Johnson, Harvey Friesleben, Roger Haupt and Verle Haupt.
Bernard, the son of Frank and Kate (Smith) Haupt, was
born on a farm west of Goodell on June 7, 1922. He attended various country
schools in the area. Later, he worked for different farmers in the area. He
entered the Army on January 20, 1943. He was in the 86th Quartermaster
Company and served in the Philippines at Luzon. On February 24, 1946, he
received his honorable discharge. He received a Bronze Star, APT Ribbon,
Good Conduct Medal, the Victory Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon, Philippines
Liberation Medal, and Rifle Sharpshooter Medal.
On December 28, 1947, Bernard married Helen Petersen of
Latimer. They farmed in the Goodell area. Bernard began working for General
Mills in Belmond in 1949 and later Central Soya until his retirement in
1982. Helen and Bernard moved to Belmond in 1954.
In 1992, they moved to Iowa City and then later made
their home in North Liberty. Bernard enjoyed gardening, fishing and working
outdoors. He loved caring for his lawn and landscaping.
Preceding him in death are his parents; one sister,
Mildred Busemen; and three brothers, Edward, Alvin and Leo.
Survivors include his wife, Helen of North Liberty; two
daughters, Joann of North Liberty and Sharon Ross and her husband, David and
two granddaughters, Katherine and Emily of Dubuque; four sisters, Minni
Olson, of Dows, Wilma Friesleben and her husband, Hartley of Clarion,
Lorraine Johnson and her husband, Earl of Iowa Falls and Helen Ahrens of Rowan;
four brothers, Robert of Belmond, Donald and his wife, Wava of Clarion,
Raymond and his wife, Arhurine of Dows and Duane and his wife, Darilyn of Dows;
and many nieces and nephews.

Lubbe Albers

Lubbe Albers, 92, of Clear Lake, died on Tuesday, June 26, 2001, at the Oakwood
Care Center, Clear Lake.
Funeral services were held on Friday, June 29, at the St.
John's Lutheran Church, Garner, with Rev. Carl Hedberg officiating.
Interment was in the Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.
Lubbe Albers, son of George N. Sr. and Evawina (Wientjes) Albers, was
born on December 28, 1908, at the Albers home near Klemme. He was baptized and
confirmed in the Klemme Immanuel Reform United Church of Christ and attended
the Klemme High School. On February 19, 1939, he married Edna Hollatz at the St.
John's Lutheran Church in Garner.
Lubbe enjoyed farming, taking great pride in feeding
cattle. They farmed south of Ventura until 1974 when they retired and moved
to Clear Lake. He enjoyed spending time with family and was an Iowa Hawkeye
fan. His hobbies were fishing, hunting and bowling. In 1978, he was inducted
into the Clear Lake Bowler's Hall of Fame.
Preceding him in death are his parents; four brothers,
John Albers, Ted Albers, George Albers and Menno Albers; four sisters,
Jennie Rueben, Carrie Pringnitz, Elsina Lauster and Helen Cornelius.
Survivors include his wife, Edna; their daughter and
son-in-law, Phyllis and Jim Engelkes of Papillion, Nebraska; two
granddaughters, Linda Engelkes of Burnsville, Minnesota and Lesli Clark and
her husband, Bill of Urbandale; two great-granddaughters, Manda and Sidney
Clark of Urbandale; and one sister, Winnie Buss of Belmond.
