Gary W. Porter

Gary W. Porter, 59, of Belmond, died Friday, December 7, 2001.
Funeral services were held on Monday, December 10, 2001,
at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, with Father David Beckman and Deacon
Nick Schmit officiating. Lector was Veronica Benetti, Eucharistic ministers
were Linda and Dick Kehrt, Deb Sloth and Katie Martinek. Altar servers were
Kelsey Mallen and Joe Bailey. Music was provided by Maxine Whitty, organist
and
Tony Wirtz, cantor.
Casket bearers were Bill Johnson, Mark McNulty, Duane Mennenga, Bob Nelson, Jr., Mike Mennenga
and Gary Ruka. Honorary casket bearers
were Frank Henningsen, Randy Musselman, Bart Saylor, Alan Stone and James Touslee. Ushers were Arthur Benetti and Hugh Kopriva. Interment was
in the St.
Francis Catholic Cemetery near Belmond.
Gary W. Porter, the son of Russell E. and Blanche
Tilton Porter, was born on July 25, 1942, in Humboldt. At an early age Gary
moved with his family to Belmond, where he attended the Belmond Schools,
graduating in 1960. He then attended the Mason City Junior College and later the
University of Iowa.
Gary was united in marriage with Nadyne Johnson on
August 21, 1965, at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Belmond. Gary was
employed by Oscar Mayer for 11 years, during which time the couple lived in
St. Louis, Cedar Falls, Clear Lake and Kansas City. The couple then moved
to Kanawha briefly before moving to Belmond. He purchased his dad's Amoco jobbership in 1976.
Gary enjoyed horseback riding, fishing and hunting.
He was preceded in death by his father, Russell in
1991; infant brother, Dennis; and his mother-in-law and father-in-law,
Claude and Ardie Johnson.
Survivors are his wife, Nadyne; one daughter and
son-in-law, Anne and Dale Spellman of Dallas Center; two sons, Chad of
Belmond and Rusty of West Des Moines; three grandchildren, Darrin, Suzanne
and Jeremy; his mother, Blanche Porter of Belmond; two sisters and
brothers-in-law, Janis and Bob Flanagan of Waterloo and Gloria and Dave
McLaughlin of Cascade; and several nieces and nephews.

Frank Edward Raasch
December 20, 2001
Frank Edward Raasch, 60, a Rowan resident of 13 years and formerly of
St. Paul, Minnesota, died on Tuesday, December 11, 2001, at his home in Rowan.
Private family services were held. The body was
cremated.
Frank Edward, the son of Fred and Louise Michaud Raasch,
was born on November 12, 1941 in St. Paul, Minnesota. He grew up in St. Paul
and attended school there. After school, Frank joined the United States
Navy, where he served for several years.
Frank married Denise Tuchner. The couple later divorced
but remained close friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother,
Fred.
Survivors include two sisters, Pat Amos of Rowan and
Janet Mulhern of St. Paul, Minnesota; two brothers, George and his wife,
Joan Raasch and David Raasch, both of St. Paul; special friend, Denise; and
numerous nieces and nephews.

Ardis Bertha Shaw
December 20, 2001
Ardis Bertha Shaw, 77, died on Thursday, December 13, 2001, at her home
in Meservey.
Funeral services were held on Monday, December 17, 2001, at
the Salem United Methodist Church in Meservey, with the Rev. Dan Voss
officiating. Interment was in the Meservey Cemetery.
Ardis was born on June 17, 1924, on the family farm in
Wisner Township, Franklin County, to Heiko Jacob and Grace Lycinda (Hafermann)
Janssen. She attended the Center School No. 5 in Wisner Township and graduated
from the Meservey High School.
On August 25, 1942, Ardis married Wayne K. Shaw in
Bethany, Missouri.
Ardis was a member of the Salem United Methodist Church in
Meservey, where she was baptized and confirmed. She was a member of the Ruth
Circle and the quilters group. Ardis was committed to her family and
grandchildren. She was a 4-H Leader for more than 25 years and a member of
the American Legion Auxiliary, Golden Years Club and the Kitchen Lassies for
many years. Ardis liked to quilt and made baby quilts for each member of her
family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two
brothers; and one granddaughter.
Survivors include children, Bertha Shaw of Eagle Grove,
Kenneth Shaw and wife, Linda, Arnold Shaw and wife, Doreen, Lucinda Zieman
and husband, David, all of Meservey; grandchildren, Michelle Duff and
husband, Rob, Kendra Wilson and husband, Scot, Chad Shaw and wife, Ranae,
Nikki Thompson and husband, Jay, Krista Dickman and husband, Joey, Kelly Zieman, Brian Zieman and Michael Zieman; great-grandchildren, Amber, Kyle
and Hailey Duff, Sadie and Seth Wilson, Spencer and Conner Shaw; and
brother, Vern Janssen of Belmond.

Erma D. Neal
December 20, 2001
Erma D. Neal, 86, of Garner, died on Saturday, December 15, 2001, at the Muse Norris
Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday,
December 18, at the United Methodist Church in Garner. Burial was in the
Alexander Cemetery.
Erma Dora Neal, the daughter of Lewis and Dora (Larsen)
Bell, was born on May 14, 1915 at Alexander. She attended school at Alexander
and graduated from the Alexander High School.
On February 19, 1935, she married
Glen George Neal at Ft. Dodge. They farmed for the first seven years of
their marriage in the Alexander, Dows, Mason City and Manly areas until
moving to Ackley, where they owned and operated a hotel. Later, they owned
and operated the sale barn in Dows and in 1957 moved to Garner where they
owned and operated Glen's Auto Sales until retiring in 1978. Erma helped her
husband, Glen as a bookkeeper in the various businesses they were involved
in over the years. She enjoyed spending time with her family, traveling,
baking and playing the organ and piano.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in
Garner, UMW, Rebekah Circle, Homemakers Club and Kensington Club of Dows.
Erma was preceded in death by her parents; two
brothers-in-law, Willie Pals and Kenet Ginapp; and a nephew, Duane Card.
Survivors include her husband; two children, Larry Neal
and his wife, Elaine of Garner and Joann Stuck and her husband, Bill of
Dows; brother, Eldon Bell and his wife, Laverne of Thornton; four sisters,
Inez Ginapp of Belmond, Alma Pals of Alexander, Dorothy Poland and her
husband, Cliff of Rockwell and Lavonne Card and her husband, Dallas of
Alexander; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Nova Koerner Stokesbary Gelner
December 27, 2001
Nova Theo Gelner, 86, of Klemme, died on Monday, December 17, 2001, at the
Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.
Her funeral was held on Saturday, December 22, at the
United Methodist Church in Klemme, with Rev. Paddy Druhl officiating.
Interment was in the Ell Township Cemetery, Klemme.
Nova, the daughter of Albert G. and Lillie M. (Lau) Koerner, was born
on July 7, 1915, at Klemme where she grew up and spent her
entire life. She graduated from the Klemme High School in 1932.
On September 5,
1935, she married Orville Thomas Stokesbary at Lakota. They had three
children, Janice, Jerry and Julie before Orville died on December 9, 1950.
Following his death, Nova married Leon Karl Gelner on March 2, 1956 at
Albert Lea, Minnesota. They lived in Klemme until her health failed and she
became a resident of the Concord Care Center in Garner on June 4, 2001.
Nova enjoyed her family, their friends, camping, square
dancing, flowers and her pet cats. She and Leon loved to travel and spent
time in the Hawaiian Islands during the winter for 28 years. She was a
member of the Klemme United Methodist Church, UMW, Circle, Square Dancers
and Campers, Garden Club and had previously been a Cub Scout Leader and a
4-H Leader.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Orville Stokesbary; her parents; a brother, Kermit Koerner; and a sister, Dolores
Ridder.
Survivors include her husband of 45 years, Leon Gelner
of Klemme; her three children, Janice Janssen and her husband, Marvin of
Garner, Jerry Stokesbary and his wife, Sharon of Mason City and Julie Renner
and her husband, Bill of Garner; eight grandchildren; thirteen
great-grandchildren; a brother, Gerald Koerner and his wife, Bernice of
Klemme; and a sister, Valeria Bridges of Garner.
Also, Leon's family, his
three children, Janice Whitehurst and her husband, Orvin of Clear Lake,
Jerald Gelner and his wife, Suzee of Laveen, Arizona and Shirley Feaver of
Aguanga, California; his ten grandchildren; and fifteen great-grandchildren.

Ruth D. Suntken
January 3, 2002
Ruth D. Suntken,
85, died on Friday, December 28, 2001, at the Belmond Medical Center.
Funeral services were held on Monday, December 31, at the First
Reformed Church in Meservey, with Rev. Rodney Meester officiating. Interment
was in the Meservey Cemetery.
Music was provided by organist, Janet Pals
and soloist was
Ron Symens. Ushers were Duane Mennenga and Andy Faaborg. Casket bearers were Jon Suntken, Joey Suntken, Wayne
Suntken, Guy Hartwig, Darin Suntken and Matthew Hartwig.
Ruth, the daughter of Jacob and Rosa (Pals) Dorenkamp,
was born on May 25, 1916, near Alexander. She was baptized on June 9, 1916, at the
Reformed Church in Meservey. She attended country schools and graduated from
the Meservey High School in 1934.
Ruth was united in marriage with Harm J. Suntken
on
December 16, 1937, at the parsonage of the Meservey Reformed Church. They
made their home in Meservey for a short time, then moved to a farm southeast
of town and farmed there until 1963 when they moved into town.
She was a life long member of the First Reformed Church,
Meservey, where she was a member of the Dorcas Circle and Ladies Aide. She
was a member of the Kitchen Klatter Band and the Golden Years Club. Ruth was
known for her cinnamon rolls. She also enjoyed gardening, playing cards,
bowling and crocheting.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two
brothers; four sisters; and one granddaughter, Tia.
Survivors include her five children, Fred and his wife,
Sandra Suntken of Meservey, Lawrence and his wife, Janet Suntken of Colorado
Springs, Colorado, Bonnie Lou and her husband, Don Brunstein of Omaha,
Nebraska, Lloyd and his wife, Pat Suntken of Meservey and Rosalie and her
husband, Mitchel Hartwig of Thornton; 12 grandchildren; 21
great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert Dorenkamp of Kendalwood, California;
three sisters, Bonnie Boelman of Meservey, Leona Lieberknecht of Belmond and
Marie Schott of Jacksonville, Florida; and a sister-in-law, Ruth Dorenkamp of
Clear Lake.
