Evelyn Myrtle Rhoden

Evelyn Myrtle Rhoden, 88, died
on Monday, September 1, 2003. at
the Pacific Coast Manor
Convalescent Home in Santa Cruz,
California.
Graveside services were held on
Tuesday, September 9, at the
Sunset Rest Cemetery in
Northwood, with Rev. Richard
Jensen of the United Methodist
Church in Northwood officiating.
The Conner Colonial Chapel,
Northwood, was in charge of the
local arrangements.
She was born in
l915 in Athboy, South Dakota.
She taught school in Iowa for 15
years, farmed in Missouri and
then in 1958 married the love of
her life, Hugo Rhoden, who
passed away in l990, a long-term
resident of Soquel. Evelyn was a
member of the Methodist Church,
American Legion, Eastern Star
and Parkinson's Support Group.
She and Hugo traveled, raised
beautiful dahlias and worked to
build the Avenue of Flags.
In later years
Evelyn loved to play cribbage
and visit with friends and
caregivers. With their loving
assistance she was able to
continue living in the home Hugo
built, where she enjoyed music
and laughter, playing cribbage,
celebrations, and visits with
friends and family members.
Evelyn was honest, kind,
faithful, generous, practical,
wise and funny.

Margaret Brunsvold

Margaret Brunsvold, 88, of
Northwood, died on Thursday,
September 4, 2003, at the
Lutheran Retirement Home,
Northwood.
Funeral services were held on
Monday, at the First Lutheran
Church, Northwood, with Rev.
Allan Stoa officiating. Burial
was in the Somber Cemetery,
rural Lake Mills, Iowa. The
Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home,
Northwood, was in charge of the
arrangements.
Margaret
Brunsvold, was born on March 30,
1915 in rural Emmons, Minnesota,
to Soren and Christine
(Ellingson) Loland. She attended
the Silver Lake Country School
and graduated from the Northwood
High School in 1933. Margaret
married Earl Brunsvold on
October 13, 1940. They farmed
outside Hanlontown from 1945 to
1972. They retired to Clear
Lake, living there from 1972 to
1987. Margaret was employed at
the Cerro Gordo County Home as
the head cook from 1973 to 1985.
She moved to Wilmington, North
Carolina in 1987 and returned in
1996 to live in Northwood.
She was preceded
in death by her parents;
husband, Earl; brother, Jake
Loland; sister, Dora Dahl; and
granddaughter, Mariaha Rose
Brunsvold.
Margaret is
survived by one son, Steven
Brunsvold of Polk City, Iowa;
two daughters, Donna Katz of
Wilmington, North Carolina and
Marcia Bride of Apple Valley,
California; six grandchildren;
one brother, Stanley Loland of
Toeterville, Iowa; and one
sister, Ruth Winklemann of
Northwood.

Dale M. Hove
September 30, 2009
Dale
M. Hove, 77, of Shelton,
Washington, died on Friday,
September 5, 2003, surrounded by
his family.
Funeral services were held on
Sunday, September 14, at the
Faith Lutheran Church in
Shelton. Burial was in the Haven
of Rest in Gig Harbor,
Washington.
Dale was born in
Northwood, Iowa on June 29,
1926, the son of Robert and Elma
(Aase) Hove. He served his
country during World War II in
the Army Air Corp. He graduated
from the UCLA, School of Public
Health and worked for the Los
Angeles County Health Department
as an industrial hygienist until
his retirement. He married June
Pederson on June 22, 1952. They
had two children, Diane Heltsley
and Dean Hove. He lived in
Hollywood, California, for 30
years before moving to Shelton.
While in
Hollywood, he was a very active
member of the Hollywood Lutheran
Church and is best remembered
for his involvement as the
sports coach.
He was preceded
in death by his parents; four
brothers; and one sister.
Survivors include
his wife, June; daughter and
son-in-law, Diane and Gary
Heltsley; son and
daughter-in-law, Dean and
Kristina Hove; and
grandchildren, Emelie and Roy
Heltsley.

Dawn Ellen
(Buehrer) Steenhard, 46, of
Mason City, died on Sunday,
September 7, 2003, in Rochester,
Minnesota, after a lengthy
illness.
Funeral services
will be held on Thursday,
September 11, at 10:30 a.m., at
the First Lutheran Church,
Northwood, with Rev. Paul Holmer
officiating. Burial will be in
the Meservey Cemetery, Meservey,
Iowa. Visitation will be on
Wednesday, from 5-8:00 p.m., at
the Schroeder & Sites Funeral
Home, Northwood.
Dawn was born on
April 20, 1957 in Mason City,
Iowa, to Eldon and Ellen (Wolff)
Buehrer. She was baptized at the
Zion Lutheran Church and
confirmed at the First Lutheran
Church, Northwood. She graduated
from the Northwood-Kensett High
School in 1975. Dawn attended
Waldorf College in Forest City
and Buena Vista College in Mason
City. Dawn married Warren
Steenhard on April 20, 1996 at
the First Lutheran Church,
Northwood. She was previously
employed at Rockwell Int.,
Alexander Manufacturing and
Minnesota Rubber.
She was preceded
in death by her parents, Eldon
and Ellen Buehrer.
Dawn is survived
by her husband, Warren of Mason
City; sister, Sharon Haugebak
and her husband, Rick of Tucson,
Arizona; brothers, Randy Buehrer
and his wife, Laure of Northwood
and Mark Buehrer and his wife,
Lori of Northwood; many nieces
and nephews; and mother-in-law,
Phyllis Steenhard of Meservey,
Iowa.

Herman Smith
September 16, 2009
Herman Smith, 95, of Pine River,
Minnesota and formerly of
Northwood, died on Wednesday,
September 10, 2003, at the St.
Joseph’s Medical Center in
Brainerd. A private family
service will be held at a later
date.
He was born on
April 19, 1908 in Montezuma,
Iowa, to Benjamin and Mary
Smith. Herman was a graduate of
the Kemper Military Academy in
Missouri. He served in the U.S.
Army during World War II and was
the Mess Sgt. for General
Maxwell Taylor at the Battle of
the Bulge. He worked for the
Black Hawk Hotel chain, Delwebb
Corporation and was a realtor in
Sun City, Arizona for 25 years.
Herman is
survived by his daughter, Susan
Amacher of Lakeshore; and one
brother, Harlan Smith of Pequot
Lakes.
His wife, Gladys;
and one sister, Aleta Dahl,
preceded him in death.

Norris Groe
September 16, 2009
Norris Groe, 68, died on Sunday,
September 14, 2003, at the Mercy
Medical Center-North Iowa in
Mason City.
Memorial services will be held
on Wednesday, at 1:30 p.m., at
the Sion Lutheran Church, rural
Lake Mills, with Rev. Kevin
Mackey officiating. Visitation
will be held one hour before the
services at the church. Burial
will be in the church cemetery.
Norris Groe, son
of Norris and Ruth (Hove) Groe,
was born on November 13, 1934 in
Worth County, Iowa. He was
baptized and confirmed at the
Sion Lutheran Church, rural Lake
Mills. He graduated from the
Lake Mills Community High
School. Norris joined the United
States Marine Corps and was
honorably discharged on May 29,
1962, as a Corporal (E-3). He
married Mildred Dodge in Santa
Anna, California. Norris and
Millie had two children, Norris
Richard III born on September
30, 1957 and Robin, born on
November 9, 1963. Norris moved
back to Lake Mills in 1970 and
worked at Winnebago Industries
for 20-plus years and retired in
1994.
Survivors include
his daughter, Robin Groe and Ed
Easton of Newport Beach,
California; his son, Norris Groe
III (J. R.) and his wife, Vickie
of Kiester, Minnesota; two
grandsons; two brothers, David
and his fiancée, Lory of Lake
Mills and Royden and his wife,
Zona of Casa Grande, Arizona;
four sisters, Vivian Meehlhause
of Clear Lake, Jeorgene Huso and
her husband, Steven of Brandon,
South Dakota, Kathy Hanson and
her husband, Dennis of Lake
Mills and Denise Kobler and her
husband, Kurt of Flower Mound,
Texas; and many nieces, nephews,
great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded
in death by his parents, Ruth
and Norris; brothers, Steven and
Marvin; sister, Fran;
brother-in-law, Gary Meehlhause;
and his mother-in-law, Lea Dodge
and father-in-law, George Dodge.

Loren K. Watts
September 23, 2009
Loren K. Watts, 73, died on
Monday, September 15, 2003, at
the Lutheran Retirement Home in
Northwood.
According to his wishes, his
body was cremated and there will
be a private inurnment at a
later date. The Schroeder &
Sites Funeral Home, Northwood,
is in charge of the
arrangements.
Loren, son of
Lavaida (Holmes) and Tom Watts
resided in Mason City, Iowa,
until June of 2003 when he
became a resident of the
Lutheran Retirement Home. Loren
was born in Marathon, Iowa on
September 19, 1929. He was the
youngest of three children and
the last surviving member of the
family. Loren graduated from the
Northwood High School, entered
the U.S. Army in 1951, served in
Germany, and was honorably
discharged in 1953. He attended
and graduated from Hamilton
College in Mason City and worked
as a bookkeeper in and around
Mason City for many years.
Loren was
preceded in death by his
parents; a sister, Doril
Ferguson and brother-in-law,
Jack; a brother, Wendell Watts
in March of 2003; and a
sister-in-law, Alice Watts in
July of 2003.
Survivors include
two daughters, Cindy Anderson
and son-in-law, Cary of Buffalo,
New York and Barbara Bailey and
son-in-law, Mike of Altoona;
five grandchildren; and two
nieces and two nephews.
He was loved and
taken care of by his niece and
nephew, Kandie Shupe and Tom
Watts, great-niece, Kim Helgeson
and the loving staff of the
Lutheran Retirement Home, all of
Northwood.

Margaret
Genevieve (Sanvik) McQuatters,
84, died on Tuesday, September
16, 2003, at the Mercy Medical
Center-North Iowa in Mason City.
Funeral services were held on
Friday, at the Bride Colonial
Chapel, Manly, with Pastor
Steven Waughtal Director of
Pastoral Care at the Good
Shepherd Care Center in Mason
City officiating. Burial was in
the Sunset Rest Cemetery in
Northwood.
Margaret was born
on August 15, 1919 at Silver
Lake, Iowa, the daughter of
George and Minnie (Sundsvold)
Sanvik and baptized on September
15, 1919 and was confirmed in
the Lutheran faith on May 14,
1933 at the Silver Lake
Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran
Church, rural Northwood. She was
a member of the Bethlehem
Lutheran Church in Manly, at the
time of her death. She graduated
from the Northwood High School
in 1937 and married Harley
William "Jim" McQuatters on
October 1, 1939.
Margaret loved to
cook and bake for her family and
grandchildren, and loved
spending time with them. Jim and
Margaret were the parents of
three children.
Left to cherish
her memory are her children,

Minnesota and Linda and her

Kenneth
C. Olson, 87, of rural
Northwood, died at his home on
Wednesday, September 17, 2003.
Funeral services were held on
Saturday, at the Deer Creek
Valley Lutheran Church, rural
Northwood, with Rev. Mark
Wendland officiating. Burial was
in the Deer Creek Valley
Cemetery. The Schroeder & Sites
Funeral Home, Northwood, was in
charge of the arrangements.
Kenneth was born
on September 18, 1915 in
Danville Township, Worth County,
Iowa, to Carl and Ida (Seter)
Olson. He married Vernice Barker
on September 14, 1941 at the
Methodist Church, Northwood, by
Rev. Phillips. He lived and
farmed in the Worth County area.
Kenneth worked at B & K Lumber,
Deckers and drove truck for the
Deer Creek Valley Creamery.
He enjoyed
dancing at the Terp Ballroom and
also hunting, fishing and
trapping.
He was preceded
in death by his parents; wife;
one son, Harlan; grandson, Brian
Olson; and sister, Larraine
Olson.
Kenneth is
survived by two sons, Leon Olson
of Northwood and Gary Olson of
Fremont, Nebraska; two
daughters, Janice Faivre of
Madison, Wisconsin and Marilyn
Dahlby of Lakeville, Minnesota;
eight grandchildren; and 18
great-grandchildren; two
sisters, Ina Thorson of
Northwood and Nadine Broitzman
of Glenville, Minnesota.

Kirk “Kurty” McLaughlin

Kirk “Kurty” McLaughlin, 42, of
Joice, died on Saturday,
September 20, 2003, at his home
in Joice.
Funeral services were held on
Friday, at the St. Patrick’s
Catholic Church in Lake Mills,
with the Rev. Jerry Blake
officiating. Burial took place
in the St. Patrick’s Catholic
Cemetery in Lake Mills.
Kirk Douglas
McLaughlin, was born on October
3, 1960 in Independence, Iowa,
the son of James P. and Marlene
(Myrton) McLaughlin. Kurty
served in the United States Army
as a military policeman from
1979 to 1983.
He enjoyed
fishing and the Green Bay
Packers football team. He worked
at his father’s locker in
Ventura for 15 years and for
ConAgra Foods in Mason City for
five years.
Kurty is survived
by his mother, Marlene
McLaughlin of Joice; and one
brother, Jeff McLaughlin of
Forest City; along with several
aunts, uncles and other
relatives and friends.
He was preceded
in death by his father, James P.
McLaughlin in April of this
year; and his grandparents.

Edna
M. Juveland, 76, of Lake Mills,
Iowa, died on Tuesday, September
23, 2003, at the Albert Lea
Medical Center in Albert Lea,
Minnesota.
Funeral services were held on
Thursday, at the Salem Lutheran
Church in Lake Mills, with Rev.
Kevin Mackey officiating. Burial
was in the Salem Memorial
Cemetery in Lake Mills.
Edna May Floy
Stehn Juveland, was born on
August 18, 1927, to Viola
Johnson Floy and Fred Floy on a
farm north of Thornton, Iowa.
She was baptized into the
Lutheran faith on June 24, 1928
and confirmed in 1941 at the St.
Paul's Lutheran Church in
Thornton. She attended a country
school at Union #7 in Cerro
Gordo County through the eighth
grade and went to high school in
Swaledale, Iowa and graduated in
1944. She then attended Hamilton
School of Commerce in Mason City
and followed in a business
career until marriage to Delmar
Stehn on October 20, 1945. Four
children were born to this
union, James Roger, Ronald
Curtis, Daniel Delmar and
Kathryn Faye.
On September 1,
1972, she married Donovan
Juveland at the Salem Lutheran
Church in Lake Mills, Iowa. They
had no children from this
marriage, but had quite a family
of step-sons and daughters and
step-grandchildren. Edna began
working for Ag-Chem Equip Co. in
Northwood, Iowa, in 1968 as a
consignment center and became
manager of the Northwood branch
until retirement in 1989. In
1990 she started in the parts
department at the Lake Mills
Farmers Co-op Elevator, now Top
of Iowa Coop.
Hobbies were
collecting cookbooks, cooking
and baking and watching the Food
Network on TV.
She is survived
by her husband, Donovan Juveland
of Lake Mills; her four
children, James and his wife,
Eldora Stehn of Northwood,
Ronald Stehn of Waukee, Iowa,
Dan and his wife, Donna Stehn of
Cresco, Iowa and Kathryn Stehn
and her fiancée, Bruce Elbers of
Waupun, Wisconsin; son-in-law,
Terry Holtan of Lake Mills;
eight grandchildren; 13
great-grandchildren; brother,
Donald and his wife, Irene Floy
of Decorah, Iowa; sisters,
Gloria and husband, Harold
Martin of Rockford, Iowa, Carol
and husband, Harold Pueggel of
Ventura and Deloris Thimesh of
Osakis, Minnesota.
Edna was preceded
in death by her parents; one
brother, Marvin; and two
sisters, Fern and Florine.

William Lee Valasek

William Lee Valasek, 84, of
Osage, died on Friday, September
26, 2003, at the Mercy Medical
Center-North Iowa in Mason City.
Funeral services were held on
Tuesday, at the Christian and
Missionary Alliance Church in
Osage, with the Rev. Rick
Magstad officiating. Interment
was in the Osage Cemetery in
Osage, with military rites by
the Osage VFW Post 7920.
William was born
on June 15, 1919, the son of
Tony and Apolena (Smysik)
Valasek. He attended rural
schools in the Osage, Mitchell
and St. Ansgar areas. He was a
veteran of WW II. William
enlisted in the Army Air Corps
and was stationed in the
Burma-India-China Theater. His
plane was shot down over Japan.
William was a lifetime member of
the VFW. William met Norma
Churchill after he was
discharged from the Army Air
Corp. They were married on July
21, 1946 in Maryville, Kansas
and from this union they had
five children. William farmed in
the Osage area for 60 years.
He loved and
enjoyed his family. He enjoyed
all the girls at the Lutheran
retirement home. He will be
sadly missed by his wife and
children.
Survived include
his wife, Norma of Osage; five
children, Larry of Bondurant,
Iowa, Steve and Rheta of
Whitehall, Montana, Nancy and
Dave of St. Ansgar, Janet and
Keith of Wichita, Kansas, Carol
and Tony of Des Moines;
grandchildren, Carl, Chad,
Brandy, Kyle, Neil and Tammy;
great-grandchildren, Samson and
Austin; and one sister, Ann of
California.
He was preceded
in death by his parents; three
brothers, Frank, Joe and Emil;
and one sister, Mary.

Emma A. Enga
October 14, 2009
Emma A. Enga, 98, formerly of
Mukilteo, Washington and earlier
of Northwood, Iowa, died on
Friday, September 26, 2003, at
the Martha and Mary Health
Services in Poulsbo, Washington.
She was born in
Harestua, Hadeland Norway, to
Anne and Edvard Lovlie and later
immigrated to the United States
after marrying Einar Enga. Emma
and Einar first settled in
Northwood, Iowa in 1930. She had
many fond memories of Northwood
and her friends there. They
moved to Mukilteo in 1942. They
raised three children at their
residence on top of the hill on
76th Street SW. Einar passed
away in 1969. Emma continued to
reside there until 1998.
She loved her
family, baking, sewing,
knitting, flowers, crocheting,
and being "Big Grandma" to the
great-grandchildren. Emma had a
good, long, happy and healthy
life and was dearly loved by
all.
Survivors include
a son, Paul (Sandy) Enga;
daughters, Kari (Walter) Scott
and Helene Watkins; niece, Bjorg
Hellerud and nephew, Egil
(Signe) Holdt and their families
in Norway; 12 grandchildren; and
18 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded
in death by husband, Einar;
grandson, Eric; parents, Anne
and Edvard; sister, Agnes; and
brothers, Halvard and Olaf.

June K. Brown, 86, of Waterloo,
formerly of Evansdale, died on
Tuesday, September 30, 2003, at
the Covenant Medical Center, of
complications following heart
surgery.
Funeral services were held on
Saturday, at the Prince of Peace
Lutheran Church, with burial in
the Garden of Memories Cemetery.
She was born on
June 28, 1917 in Mason City, the
daughter of Howard W. and Clara
M. Peterson Reynolds. She
married John M. Brown on August
27, 1939 in Nashua. He died on
October 27, 1993. Mrs. Brown was
employed as a sales clerk at
Lederman Clothing Inc. in
Evandsale for 20 years.
She was a long
time member of the Prince of
Peace Lutheran Church, a
lifetime member of the Good
Sam’s RV Camp Club and at the
time of her death was Secretary
of the Rath Retirees.
Survivors include
four daughters, Bonnie (Richard)
Manfull of East Moline,
Illinois, Sheryll (Stanley)
Karns of Lansing, Susan (Steven)
Niedert of Dubuque and Kathleen
(Ron) Fulton of Brandon; three
sisters, Fern Long of Waterloo
and Lucille and Betty of South
Dakota; nine grandchildren; and
10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded
in death by her parents; her
husband; four brothers, Carl and
Robert Johnston and Arnold and
Clifford Reynolds; two sisters,
Phyllis Stevenson and Violet
Johnston; one grandson; and one
great-granddaughter.
