Ronald
E. Russell, 69, of Hampton,
Iowa, died on Saturday, November
1, 2003, at his home in Hampton.
Funeral services were held on
Tuesday, at the St. Paul
Lutheran Church, Hampton, with
Rev. Jon Anderson officiating.
Burial was in the Hampton
Cemetery, with military services
provided by the Hampton Veterans
Memorial Association.
Ronald was born
on February 9, 1934 in Toievola,
Michigan, to Ernest VanBuren and
Mae Amelia (Harju) Russell. He
graduated from the Northwood
High School and went on to
graduate from the University of
Iowa with a business degree. He
served his country in the United
States Navy as a radioman in
Submarine Force on board the USS
Rasher from 1952-1956. He
married Eunice Dahl on October
23, 1959 in Northwood. Ronald
was employed at the Fareway
Grocery Store in Hampton.
He was a member
of the St. Paul Lutheran Church
in Hampton. Ron was an avid
University of Michigan sports
fan. He enjoyed all sporting
events and especially enjoyed
watching his grandchildren
compete in sports.
Survivors include
his wife, Eunice of Hampton;
daughter, Denise and husband,
Steve Deike of Hampton; sons,
Don and wife, Erin Ball of Shell
Rock, Iowa and Dave Ball of
Shell Rock, Iowa; brother, Bart
Russell of Gig Harbor,
Washington; sister, Carolyn
Thompson of Forest City; and two
grandchildren.
He was preceded
in death by his parents.

1952 attended the funeral of a
classmate, Ronald Russell on
Tuesday, November 4, at the St.
Paul’s Lutheran Church, Hampton.

Virginia Hanson

Virginia
Hanson, 75, of Northwood, Iowa,
died on Sunday, November 2,
2003, at the Lutheran Retirement
Home, Northwood.
Funeral services will be held on
Wednesday, November 5, at 2:00
p.m., at the First Lutheran
Church, Northwood, with Rev.
Paul Holmer officiating.
Interment will be in the London
Deer Creek Cemetery, rural
Northwood. Visitation will be on
Tuesday, from 5-8:00 p.m., at
the Conner Colonial Chapel,
Northwood and one hour before
the services on Wednesday at the
church. The Conner Colonial
Chapel, Northwood, is in charge
of the arrangements.
Virginia was born
on March 25, 1928 in Polo,
Illinois, the daughter of George
and Eva (Horton) Albright.
Virginia's mother died when she
was nine years old so she then
lived with her grandmother,
while she attended grade school
in Polo. When she got to high
school she moved in with her
sister, Ruth in Mount Morris,
Illinois and attended and
graduated from the Mount Morris
High School. She took nurse's
training at the Copley Hospital
in Aurora, Illinois and became a
registered nurse. During nurse's
training, she became a big
Chicago Cubs fan.
Virginia met Jim
Hanson while she was caring for
his father in the hospital in
Aurora. Virginia and Jim were
married on June 7, 1952, at the
farm home of her sister in
Oregon, Illinois. Virginia was a
three to eleven nursing
supervisor at the Park Memorial
Hospital in Mason City for many
years and later worked as a
recovery nurse at the North Iowa
Hospital.
Virginia enjoyed
bowling and was on the VFW
Auxiliary bowling team. She
enjoyed music and cats. She
always had a garden and did a
lot of canning and freezing. She
was known for her Grandma
Ginny's Red Pickles and her
famous pumpkin bars. Her
grandchildren often called her
"Grandma Choo-Choo", because
they lived near the train
tracks. She and Jim enjoyed
traveling. Virginia is a member
of the First Lutheran Church,
Northwood.
Virginia is
survived by her husband, Jim of
Northwood; six children, Greg
Hanson and his wife, Vickie of
Northwood, Jim Hanson and his
wife, Kathy of Northwood, Steve
Hanson and his wife, Connie of
Nampa, Idaho, Harlan Hanson and
his wife, Marilyn of West Des
Moines, Scott Hanson of
Northwood and Ruth Hanson and
her husband, Jim of Northwood;
16 grandchildren; one sister,
Ruth Hughes of Oregon, Illinois;
and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded
in death by her parents.

Robert D. Hoelscher, 74, of
Northwood, Iowa, formerly of
Waseca, Minnesota, died on
Wednesday, November 5, 2003, at
the St. Mary’s Hospital in
Rochester, Minnesota.
Funeral services were held on
Saturday, at the Schroeder &
Sites Funeral Home, Northwood,
with Rev. Wayne Ellingson
officiating. Burial was in the
Woodville Cemetery in Waseca,
Minnesota. The Schroeder & Sites
Funeral Home, Northwood, was in
charge of the arrangements.
Robert D.
Hoelscher, was born on September
13, 1929 at Eldora, Iowa, to
John and Irene (Simonson)
Hoelscher. He served his nation
in the Army during the Korean
Conflict from January 1951
through May 1953, obtaining the
rank of SFC. Robert married
Marjorie Christenson on
December 31, 1956 in Dodge
Center, Minnesota. He was a
retired farmer and worked at the
E. F. Johnson Company in Waseca
for many years.
Survivors include
his wife, Marjorie of Northwood;
his mother, Irene Janssen of
Spirit Lake, Iowa; three sons,
Reece and his wife, Shirley of
Mankato, Minnesota, Dale and his
wife, Robin of Janesville,
Minnesota and Mark and his wife,
Cora of Kensett; five
grandchildren; three
step-grandchildren; three
great-grandchildren; two
step-great-grandchildren; two
step-brothers; and one
step-sister.
He was preceded
in death by his father; and
step-father.

Marguerite Johnson Nye

Marguerite Johnson Nye, former
grade school teacher in the
Northwood Schools, died suddenly
on Friday, November 7, 2003, at
the home of her daughter in West
Hartford, Connecticut.
She was a native
of Iowa Falls, where she was
married to United States Senator
Gerald Nye. They made their home
in Washington D.C., where she
enjoyed the amenities of the
wife of a senator after his
death, until she moved to the
home of her daughter.

Ubbie F. Harms
November 11, 2003
Ubbie F. Harms, 80, of Buffalo
Center, died on Sunday, at the
Lake Mills Care Center.
Funeral services will be held on
Wednesday, November 12, at
10:30 a.m., at the First
Reformed Church in Buffalo
Center. Pastor Bill Peake will
officiate. Interment will be in
the Olena Mound Cemetery in
Buffalo Center.
Ubbie F. Harms,
was born to Hamm and Johanna
(Jutting) Harms on April 20,
1923, on a farm near Buffalo
Center, Iowa. Ubbie grew up near
Buffalo Center and Woden. He was
baptized in the Reformed Church
and attended school in Buffalo
Center and later country school.
He married Harriet Harringa on
April 6, 1945, at the Methodist
Parsonage in Algona. They farmed
for a few years south of Buffalo
Center. In 1952 he went to work
at Welps Hatchery in Bancroft
for 10 years. Later he was
custodian at Forest City, Clear
Lake and Crystal Lake Schools
for 15 years. Also Ubbie was
custodian for Manufacturer's
Bank, Timely Mission Nursing
Home and the First Reformed
Church.
Ubbie enjoyed
using his hands in remodeling
projects. He liked talking to
young people, listening to
country music and visiting the
Grand Ole Opry and Branson,
Missouri. He took great pleasure
in the company of his
grandchildren and friends.
Survivors include
his wife, Harriet of Buffalo
Center; daughters, Joanne
Steinmetz and her husband, Terry
of Northwood, Ruth Skjele of
LuVerne, Minnesota and Cheryl
Bakken and her husband, James of

Izetta
Craig, 88, of Hanlontown, passed
away on Thursday, November 13,
2003, at the Muse Norris Hospice
of North Iowa, Mason City, Iowa.
Graveside services will be held
on Thursday, November 20, at
1:00 p.m., at the Brush Point
Cemetery, Hanlontown, with Rev.
Kris Snyder officiating. Lunch
will be served following the
service at the Hanlontown
Community Center. The Schroeder
& Sites Funeral Home of
Northwood, is in charge of the
arrangements.
Izetta, the
daughter of Riley and Nora
(Ragen) Paxton, was born on
December 9, 1914 in Holt County,
Nebraska. She was a 1933
graduate of the Stuart High
School, Stuart, Nebraska. She
taught in rural schools in the
Stuart, Nebraska area. She
married Chester C. Craig on
February 28, 1932. Two children
were blessed to this union,
Billie Joan and Sharon Kay. They
moved to Hanlontown in 1943,
where she lived until her death.
She was a member of the Grace
Lutheran Church in Hanlontown.
Izetta was employed at Jenning's
Cafe, Kelly Brattrud Appliance
and Ralph Jenning's Produce. She
was also employed at Winnebago
Industries for 17 years in
Stitchcraft where she retired at
70 years of age.
Her greatest joys
were her daughters and
sons-in-law, grandchildren and
great-grandchildren. She loved
tending to her flowers, sewing
costumes for grandchildren and
crocheting. She was always ready
with a helping hand, a lap for
cuddling and lost of hugs and
kisses. She will be greatly
missed by her family and
friends.
Left to cherish
her memories are her daughters,
Billie Joan (Harold) Naugle of
Armstrong, Missouri and Sharon
Kay (Duane) Holstad of Kensett,
Iowa; six grandchildren, Harold

Nelson, 86, of Northwood, Iowa,
died on Sunday, November 23,
2003, at the Lutheran Retirement
Home in Northwood.
Memorial services

the Sunset Rest Cemetery,
Northwood.
Marjory was born
on February 1, 1917 in
Northwood, to Carl Julius Narum
and Ida Matilda (Klove) Narum.
She was raised in Worth County
and attended school in
Northwood. After graduating from
high school she attended the
University of Utah. She joined
the Navy after Pearl Harbor and
was stationed in Washington,
D.C. serving in Naval
Intelligence. After serving her
country she returned to
Northwood and married Milford
Nelson. Two children were born
to this union. She was a
bookkeeper for her husband’s
business. She also worked as a
secretary for a local insurance
agency and as a parish secretary
at First Lutheran. She was known
for her talent in hardanger, in
which, she also taught classes.
Survivors include
two sons, Bruce N. Nelson of
Crowley, Texas and Rev. Lee A.
Nelson of Northwood; four
grandchildren; five
great-grandchildren; one sister,
C. Janet Narum; and numerous
nieces, nephews and other
relatives.
She was preceded
in death by her parents; her
husband, Milford in 1977; and
one brother, John Carlyle Narum
in 1933.

(Craig) Naugle, 69, of
Armstrong, died on Monday,
November 24, 2003, at her home.
JoAnne was born
on September 29, 1934 in Stuart,
Nebraska, to Chet Craig and
Izetta (Paxton) Craig. She
graduated from the Hanlontown
High School in 1952. She married
Harold E. Naugle Sr. at Lowery
Air Force Base, Denver, Colorado
on December 17, 1955.
Survivors include
her husband, Harold E. Naugle
Sr.; three children, Harold Jr.,
Craig and Sharraine; eight
grandchildren; seven
great-grandchildren; and a
sister, Sharon Holstad of

Roger was born on
April 18, 1940, at Iron
Mountain, Michigan, to Marlin A.
and Charlotte (Witter) LaPoint.
He was a jack of all trades, but
his real enjoyment came from
being a truck driver. The wide
open road was his love. As a
truck driver he was known by all
his friends as "JW" or the Jolly
Roger. Roger was also a great
outdoorsman. He loved fishing,
boating, hunting, camping and
all animals, particularly dogs.
When it came to movies he
couldn’t resist a good western
with John Wayne or Clint
Eastwood. He also liked James
Bond, E.T., Miss Piggy from the
Muppets and Wonder woman, just
to name a few.
Survivors include
three daughters, Rebecca and
husband, Bret Hartkopp of Clear
Lake, Charmagne LaPoint and
special friend, Mark Blackburn
of Elkgrove, California and
Misty and husband, Keith
Eilertson of Northwood; 10
grandchildren; one

Clement
A. Schneider, 73, of Mason City,
Iowa, died on Wednesday,
November 26, 2003, at the Muse
Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit,
Mason City.
Funeral services were held on
Saturday, at the Holy Family
Catholic Church, Mason City,
with Rev. Dennis Cahill
officiating. Interment was in
the Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery,
Mason City. Military honors were
provided by the Mason City
Veterans Memorial Association.
Clement was born
on December 11, 1929 in Kensett,
Iowa, the son of Louis and Mary
(Dankbar) Schneider. He
graduated from the Hanlontown
High School. He served in the
United States Army and then was
a member of the active Reserves.
Clement married Darlene Loecher
on September 5, 1959 in
Stacyville, Iowa. He operated a
turkey farm west of Manly until
1960. He then worked at Armor
from 1960-1975 and also was a
school bus driver for the Manly
and Mason City School Systems.
He later was employed at
Mitchell Transport and then Ruan
from 1975-1995.
He enjoyed
camping, wintering in the south,
collecting caps and daily visits
with the groups at west
McDonalds. Shopping and trading
of automobiles was also a
lifetime hobby. He was a member
of the Holy Family Catholic
Church, Knights of Columbus and
Teamsters 828.
Clement is
survived by his wife, Darlene of
Mason City; his three children,
Karen Vitale of River Falls,
Wisconsin, Mark Schneider and
his wife, Michelle of River
Falls, Wisconsin and Sharon
Luehrs and her husband, Jeff of
Apple Valley, Minnesota; seven
grandchildren; two brothers,
Cletus Schneider of Mason City
and Carl Schneider and his wife,
Gay of Manly; and two sisters,
Catherine Weir and her husband,
Larry of Deerfield, Illinois And
Corrinne Fenelon of Waterloo,
Iowa.
He was preceded
in death by his parents; infant

Northwood.

Methodist Church in Manly, with
Rev. Robert Cumings officiating.
Burial was in the Manly
Cemetery.
Celina was born
on July 26, 1906 in Manly, the
daughter of Chris and Louise
(Scharef) Herum. She graduated
from the Manly High School in
1923 and attended Mankato State
College. She taught at various
country schools and then moved
to Minneapolis, Minnesota, where
she worked in the garment
industry and found a love for
beautiful clothes. She then
moved back to Manly and the farm
where she grew up. She enjoyed
gardening and tending to her
flowers as well as raising
livestock on the family farm.
She is survived
by her daughter-in-law, Shirley
Herum of Ankeny, Iowa; two
grandsons, Jerry Herum (Celeste
Van Syoc) of Des Moines, Iowa
and Daniel (Wendy) Herum of
Indianola, Iowa; as well as four
great-granddaughters, Jessica,
Amanda, Amber and Crystal.
She was preceded
in death by her parents;
husbands, Lew Silverton and
Gerald Ivan Boulting; and her
son, Chris Herum.

Richard B. Spilde

Richard B. Spilde, 81, of Albert
Lea, died suddenly on Friday,
November 28, 2003, at the St.
Mary's Hospital in Rochester,
surrounded by his family and
special friend.
Funeral services
were held on Monday, at the Our
Savior's Lutheran Church, with
the Rev. Wayne Halvorson
officiating. Burial was in the
Graceland Cemetery, with
military honors accorded by the
Freeborn County Servicemen's
Organization.
Richard B.
Spilde, was born on December 2,
1921 in Northwood, Iowa, the son
of Laur and Emma (Jensen)
Spilde. He was baptized at the
Shell Rock Lutheran Church,
Northwood and confirmed at the
Our Saviors Lutheran Church. He
attended grade school in Worth
County and later in Freeborn
County and the Our Savior's
Lutheran School. Richard worked
at Wilson's for a short time and
then enlisted in the U.S. Army
serving from August 11, 1942
until his discharge on
October 26, 1945. While serving
his country, Richard served
overseas in the Western Pacific.
After his discharge he attended
the Dunwoody Institute in the
automobile mechanic program.
Richard then began his career as
an auto mechanic at Olson's
Motor, later becoming Motor Inn.
He retired in the mid-1980s.
Richard enjoyed
hunting, fishing and was a
member of the VFW and the
American Legion and Our Savior's
Lutheran Church.
Richard is
survived by his sister, Ruth and
husband, Emery Hovland of
Austin; many nieces, nephews and
cousins; and Richard's special
friend, Virginia Thompson of
Northwood.
He was preceded
in death by his parents;
brothers, Orville and Roger; and
sisters, Alice Wolff and Irene
Miller.
Those attending

Anna
Schultz, 102, of Northwood,
Iowa, died on Saturday, November
29, 2003, at the Lutheran
Retirement Home, Northwood.
Funeral services
were held on Tuesday, at the
First Lutheran Church,
Northwood, with Rev. Paul Holmer
officiating. Interment was in
the Grafton Cemetery, Grafton.
Anna was born on
February 5, 1901, to John and
Anna Rademaker at their farm
home near Iowa Falls, Iowa. She
was baptized in infancy at the
rural Grant Center Lutheran
Church near Hampton, Iowa. At
the age of 12 she moved with her
family to a farm 3½ miles
northwest of Grafton. She was
confirmed in the Christian faith
at the Immanuel Lutheran Church,
Grafton. She married George
Schultz of Grafton in 1921. They
lived on various farms in the
Grafton area. In 1945, they
moved to Northwood, where they
became members of the Zion
Lutheran Church.
Anna served five
years as Treasurer of the Zion
Lutheran Ladies Aid Society and
taught Sunday School for 15
years. When the Zion Lutheran
Church merged with the First
Lutheran Church, she became an
active member of the JoAnna
Circle. She worked for 10 years
as head cook at the Lutheran
Retirement Home.
Anna was very
close to her family and the
Lord. She was always a willing
volunteer. Anna spent many
joyful hours making quilts for
Lutheran World Relief. She loved
both her flowers and vegetable
gardens. Over the years she
graced many tables with their
bounty. Anna will be greatly
missed by all who knew and loved
her.
Survivors include
her son, Marvin Schultz and his
wife, Marjorie of Dubuque, Iowa;
her devoted son-in-law, Melvin
Krumm of Northwood; four
grandchildren, Karen Schultz and
her husband, Robert Anderson of
Bettendorf, Iowa, Kathy Huberty

Green, Wconsin, Stephen Krumm
and his wife, Deborah of

Leo Olson, 54, of Northwood,
died on Saturday, November 29,
2003, at his home.
Funeral services
were held on Saturday, at the
United Methodist Church,
Northwood, with Rev. Richard
Jensen officiating. Burial was
in the Sunset Rest Cemetery in
Northwood. The Conner Colonial
Chapel, Northwood, was in charge
of the arrangements.
Ronald Leo Olson,
the son of Guy Olson of
Northwood, Iowa and Lois (Reed)
Olson of Collins, Iowa, was born
on May 30, 1949 in Huntington,
Indiana. He attended the
Northwood-Kensett Schools, where
he graduated in 1967. He was a
member of the Boy Scouts,
DeMolay and the United Methodist
Church in Northwood and was
active in high school football,
vocal music, drama and art. He
attended NIACC in Mason City and
Mankato State College. Ron, who
lived and worked in Northwood
most of his life except for
several years spent working in
the mines in Colorado, had been
an award winning reporter and
photographer for the Northwood
Anchor since 1987, and was a
sports reporter for the Mason
City Globe Gazette from 1984 to
1987.
His involvement
in the community ranged from
membership in a local bowling

Northwood. He was an avid
fisherman, spending many
pleasurable hours with friends
on lakes in the Canadian
wilderness. As a reporter, he
held virtually a permanent spot
on the sidelines at
Northwood-Kensett sports events,
but his heart belonged to
football. He was also an
enthusiastic storyteller and
local historian. As a teenager,
he started reading the
dictionary for entertainment.
Left to cherish
his memory are his parents, Guy
Olson of Northwood and Lois
Olson of Collins; three sisters
and their families, Susanne, Jim
and Dana White of Los Angeles,
California, Janet, Jon, Tyler
and Olivia Neuschwanger of
Collins, Iowa and Jill, Frank
and Evan Hilton of Des Moines;
many aunts and uncles, including
Ruth Reed of Huntington,
Indiana, Ivan and Elaine Olson
of Northwood, Opal Patterson of
Greenfield, Iowa, Vivian and
Dwight Irwin of Muscatine, Iowa,
Bud Ambler of Huntington,
Indiana, Merle and Rosalie
Russell of Casa Grande, Arizona
and Dale and Nancy Olson of
Dupree, Wisconsin; and by many
cousins throughout Iowa and the
country and many friends.
He was preceded
in death by his grandfather and
grandmother, Clarence and
Florence Olson of Northwood and
Wallace and Effie Reed of
Huntington, Indiana.
