Clarence O. Torkelson, 69, of
Albert Lea, Minnesota, died on
Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at his
home.
Funeral services were held on
Friday at the Assemblies of God
Church. The Rev. Lee Freshour
officiated, Interment was in the
Ellington Township Cemetery,
Forest City.
Clarence O.
Torkelson, was born on April 12,
1935, to Clarence M. and Othelia
C. Torkelson in Thompson, Iowa.
He lived most of his life near
Fertile, where he attended
country schools and the Fertile
Community School. On Febuary 24,
1962, Clarence married Janice E.
Brozik in Garner. He farmed in
the Fertile area for many years
before moving to Albert Lea
seven years ago.
He loved music,
especially playing the guitar,
reading and his grandchildren.
Survivors include
his wife, Janice of Albert Lea;
mother, Othelia of Forest City;
children, Kevin and wife, Lori
Torkelson and their children,
Bailey, Mitch and Cade of
Ottumwa, Iowa; Wendy Torkelson
of Minneapolis; Kristen and
husband, Kevin Oldenkamp and
their children, Kelsey and
Kassidy of Clarks Grove; and
Renee and husband, Rod Batzlaff
and their children, Cassie and
Caitlin of Brooklyn Center;
brothers and sisters, Margie

Ruth Lenora Walk, 93, died on
Wednesday, June 4, 2003, at the
Albert Lea Medical Center.
The funeral service was held on
Friday, at the First Lutheran
Chapel, Albert Lea. Pastor John
Holt officiated with interment
in the Hillcrest Cemetery.
Ruth was born on
January 2, 1910 in Northwood,
Iowa, the daughter of John D.
and Thea (Holty) Johnson. She
was baptized and confirmed in
the Lutheran faith at Northwood.
She attended schools in
Northwood. Ruth married Edward
W. Walk on April 5, 1930 at
Northwood. To them were born
nine children, Joy, Gary, Betty,
Ronald, Dean, David, Bruce, Judy
and Larry.

Virgil Earl Patterson

Virgil Earl Patterson, 77, died
on Thursday, June 5, 2003, at
the Menifee Valley Medical
Center in Sun City, California.
Virgil was the
son of the late Earl Patterson
and the late Minnie Hendrickson.
He was born and raised in the
Northwood area. He lived in Sun
City, California 13 years.
Previously he lived in Perris,
California for 10 years. He was
an underwater operations
engineer at the Naval Undersea
Center in San Diego, California
for 31 years. Virgil served in
the U.S. Marine Corps from 1955
until 1946 and was a member of
the Perris Valley Flyers.
Survivors include
his wife, Barbara; two sons, Jim
of Sun City, California and
Dennis of Hemet, California;
five grandchildren; and five
great-grandchildren.
He was preceded
in death by his parents, Earl
Patterson and Minnie
Hendrickson; and a brother,
DeWayne Patterson.

Gerhard S. Haugerud

Gerhard S. Haugerud, 76, of
Albert Lea, died on Saturday,
June 7, 2003, at the Albert Lea
Medical Center.
Funeral services were held on
Tuesday, at the Silver Lake
Lutheran Church, with Rev.
Thomas Hagen officiating.
Interment was in the Silver Lake
Cemetery.
Gerhard Seymour
Haugerud, was born on October 1,
1926 in Worth County, Iowa, the
son of Sever and Gena (Nelson)
Haugerud. He grew up on the
family farm in Worth County. As
a young man he served in the
U.S. Army in Germany during the
Korean War. Following his
discharge from the service, he
went to work for the American
Gas Company, later Queen
Products/King Seeley. He retired
in 1988. On February 26, 1984,
he married Ruth Christopherson
at the Silver Lake Lutheran
Church.
He was a 28 year
member of AA, a member of the
American Legion and the VFW. He
was a lifelong member of the
Silver Lake Lutheran Church. He
enjoyed woodworking, feeding
squirrels and visiting with his
many friends at HyVee.
Survivors include
his wife, Ruth of Albert Lea;
nephew, John and his wife, Cathy
Haugerud of Northwood; niece,
Karen and her husband, Jim
Coomes of Lake Mills; eight
grandnieces and grandnephews;
and many great-grandnieces and
great-grandnephews.
He was preceded
in death by his parents; his
brother and sister-in-law, Orian
and June Haugerud; and his
nephew, Ordean Haugerud.

Henry Alfred Schmidt

Henry
Alfred Schmidt, 71, of Manly,
died on Thursday, June 12, 2003,
at the Muse-Norris Hospice
Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
Funeral services were held on
Saturday, at the Bethlehem
Lutheran Church in Manly, with
Rev. Randy Nielsen officiating.
Burial was in the Grafton
Cemetery.
Henry Alfred
Schmidt, was born on December
19, 1931, in rural Worth County
near Plymouth, the son of Alfred
and Tena (Wirtjes) Schmidt. He
attended and received his
education in the rural Grafton
and Fertile Grade Schools,
graduating from the Manly High
School in 1950. He married Ruth
Ann Lifka on June 4, 1957 in
Grafton. After completing his
schooling, he began working for
the Fullerton Lumber Company and
Manly Produce. Henry was self
employed in the trucking
business and also drove a bulk
milk truck for the Tri State
Company in Wisconsin, and for
the Lake Mills Coop until his
retirement. After his retirement
he helped Carroll Nelsen in
rural Osage with his farming.
He enjoyed
woodworking, fishing and
camping. He was a member of the
Bethlehem Lutheran Church in
Manly. He also served as a Manly
volunteer fireman for over 25
years and was the acting Fire
Chief upon his retirement from
the fire department. He also
belonged to the Osage SAMs
Camping Club.
Left to cherish
his memory is his wife, Ruth Ann
Schmidt of Manly; five children,
Roxana Johnson and her husband,
Ken of Mt. Clemons, Michigan,
Randy Schmidt and friend, Judy
of New Port Ritchie, Florida,
Ranell Schmidt of Richfield,

Millard R. Hamersly, 84, of
Glenville, died on Friday, June
13, 2003, at the St. John’s
Lutheran Home in Albert Lea.
Memorial services were held on
Tuesday, at the United Methodist
Church in Albert Lea. The Rev.
James Haun officiated. Interment
was in the Stateline Cemetery.
Military honors were accorded by
the Freeborn County Servicemen’s
Organization.
Millard Royse
Hamersly, was born on June 21,
1918, to Grover Cleveland and
Mary Louise (Buchanan) Hamersly
in Sheffield, Iowa. He attended
schools in Northwood. In 1932,
Millard moved to Minnesota where
he farmed for many years. He
served in the United States Army
during World War II from June
1941 to December 1945. Millard
was a member of the United
Methodist Church, Gordonsville,
and Albert Lea.
He enjoyed
listening to classical music and
spent many hours doing volunteer
work at St. John’s and the Good
Samaritan Retirement Home. He
had been a member of the
American Legion since 1946 and
was also in the REACT Club.
Survivors include
his brother, Winston and wife,
Marjory Hamersly; nephew, James
B. and wife, Peggy Hamersly;
niece, Carla and husband, Leland
Johnson; and several grandnieces
and nephews.
Millard was
preceded in death by his
parents.

Diane Willand Graham, 52, of
Maryville, Missouri, died on
Sunday, June 15, 2003, at her
home in Maryville.

officiating.
Pamela was born
on February 3, 1951 in Mason
City, to Clarence and Fern
(Morris) Willand. She graduated
from the Lake Mills Community
High School in 1969 and Drake
University, Des Moines, with a
BS in Pharmacy in 1974. She was
a registered pharmacist. She
married Michael Graham on June
16, 1973 in rural Lake Mills.
Pamela was a
member of the St. Paul’s
Episcopal Church, AAUW (American
Assn of University Women), NOW,
and many bridge groups in
Maryville, Missouri.
Survivors include
her husband, Michael of
Maryville; two daughters,
Jennifer Graham Zimmerman of
West Des Moines and Amanda
Graham of Wichita, Kansas;
parents, Clarence and Fern
Willand of Lake Mills; two
sisters, Penny Nelson of Lake
Mills and Vicki Bartlett of

She was preceded

E. Harris, 86, of Northwood,
Iowa, died on Tuesday, June 17,
2003, at the Lutheran Retirement
Home, Northwood.
Funeral services were held on
Friday, at the Schroeder & Sites
Funeral Home, Northwood, with
Rev. Richard Jensen of the
Northwood United Methodist
Church officiating. Burial was
in the Sunset Rest Cemetery,
Northwood. The Schroeder & Sites
Funeral Home, Northwood, was in
charge of the arrangements.
Cheryl was born
on May 30, 1917 in Mason City,
Iowa, to George W. and Mary
(Reiter) Whitney. She worked at
Mason City Furriers. Cheryl
married Ralph Harris on July 3,
1936 in Mason City. She helped
with the family farm and also
with the dairy business which
they had from 1940 to 1942.
Cheryl helped with a self
service egg business on the
farm. She was always cooking for
the men on the farm.
She enjoyed her
crafts, sewing and birds. Cheryl
loved her children,
grandchildren and
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded
in death by her parents;
husband; one daughter, Ann; one
son, Larry; one grandson, Tom;
one brother, Robert Whitney; and
one sister, Annzonetta Pienneke.
Cheryl is
survived by one daughter, Paula
Harris of Northwood; two sons,
Lonnie Harris and his wife, Myra
of Northwood and Bob Harris and

Charles
Albert Olson, 69, of Kenosha,
Wisconsin, a former Dows
resident, died as the result of
complications of a brain tumor
on Monday, January 20, 2003, in
Kenosha.
A
private memorial service and urn
burial was held on Thursday,
June 19, 2003, at the Evergreen
Cemetery in Clarion. A special
friend, Gary Turner brought the
remains from the Hansen-Lendman
Funeral Home from Kenosha,
Wisconsin.
Charles was born
on September 21, 1933 at
Clarion, to Albert and Margery
Legge Olson. He attended grade
school in Rowan and graduated
from the Dows High School in
1951. He was a small farmer and
received the First “Iowa and
American Farmer Degree” through
FFA in Dows. He never married.
Charles was a
member of the Dows Methodist
Church.
He is survived by
three sisters, Shirley Meyer and
husband, Dale of Kensett,
Darlene Polzin of Iowa Falls and
Mardine Meyer and husband, Dean
of Kensett; and many nieces and
nephews.
He was preceded
in death by his parents; and a
brother-in-law, Harold Polzin.

Guy A. Olson, 75, of Northwood,
formerly of Fort Dodge, died on
Friday, June 20, 2003, at the
Trinity Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services were held on
Monday, at the St. Olaf Lutheran
Church, with Rev. David
Grindberg and Rev. Carroll Lang
officiating. Burial was in the
North Lawn Cemetery.
Guy was born on
August 27, 1927 in Ellison Bay,
Wisconsin. He graduated from the
Gilbraltar High School, Fish
Creek, Wisconsin in 1945. After
flunking out of the U of
Wisconsin, Madison and Door
Kewanee Normal, Algoma,
Wisconsin, he graduated with a
BA in Social Studies from Luther
College, Decorah in 1949. His MA
was in Guidance and Counseling
from Indiana State, Terre Haute,
Indiana in 1962. He did
additional graduate work at UNI
and Drake, where he received his
administrative endorsements,
Stetsen-Deland, Florida and
Indiana University. Teaching and
coaching were his early career.
Upon retiring he became an
independent consultant
continuing to do staff
development coordination.
Survivors include
his wife, Janice; two sons,
Larry of Van Horn, Iowa and Tony
of Hawaii; three step-daughters,
Shelley Robson and her husband,
Dan of Forest City, Iowa, Lisa
Irving and her husband, Matt of
North Liberty, Iowa and
Angenette Goetz and her husband,
Bill of Milwaukee, Wisconsin;
seven grandchildren; five
step-grandchildren; two
great-grandchildren; brother,

of Northwood, Iowa, died on

Northwood, with Rev. Allan Stoa
officiating. Internment will
take place in the Sunset Rest
Cemetery, Northwood. The
visitation will be held on
Wednesday, from 5-8:00 p.m., at
the Schroeder & Sites Funeral
Home, Northwood.
Doris was born in
Northwood, on March 21, 1922, to
Irvin and Thea (Throne) Brown.
She was baptized and confirmed
in the Lutheran faith and was a
member of the First Lutheran
Church and the Lydia circle of
the church. She graduated from
the Northwood High School in
1940. Doris Elaine Brown married
William Woodrow (Woody) Hudson
on September 20, 1945 in Hot
Springs, Arkansas. They lived in
Northwood during their married
life.
Doris was a life
member of the VFW Ladies
Auxiliary and a member of the
American Legion Auxiliary.
Throughout her adult life she
was very active in the local
VFW, enjoying the companionship
of good friends and the many
activities sponsored by the VFW.
She was well known as a
wonderful cook and enjoyed
bowling in a women's league for
many years, retiring from the
Auditor's office in 1987. She
kept in touch with her many
friends there through monthly
luncheons as long as she was
able. Most important in Doris'
life were her children,
grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren. She will be
greatly missed by her family and
many friends.
Left to cherish

Cora B. Pixley, 90, of
Northwood, died on Saturday,

Chapel, Northwood, was in charge

Cora B. Pixley,
was born on October 17, 1912 in
Worth County near Northwood, the
daughter of Ole and Marie Bergo.
She was baptized on November 24,
1912 and reaffirmed the faith of
her baptism through confirmation
on May 15, 1927. She attended
and graduated from the Northwood
High School. After completing
her schooling she worked for the
Worth County Co-op Oil Company
and for the ASCS office in
Northwood as a program clerk for
several years until her
retirement. She married Clayton
Pixley on September 2, 1935. He
preceded her in death on
December 25, 1969.
She enjoyed
crocheting, making afghans and
flowers. She was a member of the
First Lutheran Church and the
church circle in Northwood.
She is survived
by a sister-in-law, Lois Bergo
of Northwood; a brother-in-law,
Claus Pixley of Long Beach,
California; special friends,
Kenneth Roppe of Northwood,
Bonnie Roppe and Sherrie Winter
of Rochester, Minnesota and
Karen Emanuel of Lyle,
Minnesota; as well as other
friends.
Her parents;
husband; a brother, Palmer
Bergo; and two sisters, Oline

Henry Mueller, 92, of Manly,
died on Tuesday, June 24, 2003,
at the Manly Nursing & Rehab
Center.
According to his wishes
cremation took place. Memorial
services were held on Friday, at
the Bethel United Methodist
Church in Manly, with Rev.
Robert Cumings officiating.
Inurnment was in the Manly
Cemetery. The Bride Colonial
Chapel, Manly, was in charge of
the arrangements.
Albert Henry
Mueller, was born on May 30,
1911 in rural Manly, the son of
Gottlieb J. and Bertha
(Stoecker) Mueller. He was
baptized and reaffirmed the
faith of his baptism through
confirmation in the St. Paul's
Evangelical and Reformed Church
in Manly and later years was a
very faithful and active member
of the Bethel United Methodist
Church in Manly. He attended and
graduated from the Manly High
School in 1928 and attended Iowa
State University. He married
Elsie Bartlett on September 26,
1943, which he considered the
greatest honor he would ever
receive. She preceded him in
death on September 8, 1992.
After their marriage together
they farmed and lived on the
family farm until his
retirement. After their
retirement they moved into
Manly.
Albert was very
active in the Manly community,
serving on the North Central
School Board, and many other
community, charity, and church
projects. He was also very
supportive of the musical
activities in the Manly
community and in his earlier
years, enjoyed flying his Piper
Cub airplane.
Left to cherish
his memory are his children,
Ruth Barnett and her husband,
Rod of Newton, Iowa, Margaret
Weir and her husband, Ben of
Colo, Iowa, Susan Trebil and her
husband, Steve of Manly and Jane

Center, St. Ansgar.

at the Deer Creek Lutheran
Church, Carpenter, with Rev.
Wayne Ellingson officiating.
Burial will be in the Deer Creek
Cemetery, Carpenter. The
Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home,
Northwood, was in charge of the
arrangements.
Selma was born on
April 4, 1908 in Deer Creek
Township, Worth County, Iowa,
the daughter of John and Maria
(Gordon) Johnson. She was
baptized and confirmed in the
Lutheran faith at the Deer Creek
Lutheran Church, Carpenter,
where she was a life long
member. Selma attended rural
school in Worth County and
graduated from the Otranto High
School, Otranto, Iowa in 1926.
On August 13, 1927 she married
Randall Perkins of Lyle,
Minnesota. They made their home
in the Lyle area for 58 years.
Following Randall's death in
December of 1985, Selma moved to
the Worth Living Center in St.
Ansgar. After failing health and
vision she became a resident at
the Good Samaritan Center.
Selma is survived
by a daughter, Helen Marie Funk
of Osage; a son, John (Ludmilla)
Perkins of Cresco; six
granddaughters; 11
great-grandchildren; five
great-great-grandchildren; four
step-grandchildren; 12
step-great-grandchildren; a
brother, Maynard Johnson of
Northwood; sister-in-law, Mary
(Arthur) Johnson of Northwood;
and many nieces and nephews.

Silver Lake Country School. She
completed the 8th grade and
always had a desire to learn,
read, do math, and memorize
poetry. Olga went to the Silver
Lake Lutheran Church. She
confirmed her baptism on May 29,
1932. Olga married Irving
Flatness on March 15, 1942 in
Clarks Grove, Minnesota. They
farmed until 1984 near
Carpenter. in 1995, they moved
to Northwood on Shellrock Drive.
Irving cared for Olga in their
home until November 1, 2000. She
was cared and loved by the
nursing staff at the Manly
Nursing and Rehab Center, they
treat you like you are one big
family.
The Deer Creek
Lutheran Church was a big part
of Olga's life, She was involved
in circle, aid, Sunday worship,
but she will be known most of
all for her making of quilts and
finishing them around the edges
after do day. Olga was a
fantastic grandma. Olga kept
busy on the farm, helping with
chores, canning, sewing,
gardening, working puzzles, was
a delicious baker, making
donuts, painting, driving
tractor, crocheting, so many
ways she kept busy; busy hands
are happy hands. Olga always had
a smile to give you and a kind
word. She had Alzheimer's; it
took her memory, but not her
spunk.
Sharon, her
daughter, welcomed her to her
heavenly home. She preceded her
Mom 31 years ago on June 27.
Olga was the youngest of six
children; her siblings all
preceded her in death; Almer,
Oscar, Alice, Elvina and Joseph;
also her parents.
Left to cherish
her memory are her husband,
Irving of Northwood; son, David
and wife, Brenda of Clear Lake,
Iowa; grandson, Doug and wife,
Sara of Lincoln, Nebraska and
their girls, Rumer and Macy;
granddaughter, Dawn and husband,
Jason Wright of Lockridge, Iowa
and their children, Abigail,
Andrew and Mathew; and grandson,
Scott of Des Moines, Iowa.

Wilmer R. Broitzman
July 8, 2003
Wilmer R. Broitzman, 88, of
Glenville, died on Saturday,
June 28, 2003, at the Northwood
Retirement Center.
Funeral services were held on
Tuesday, at the Bethlehem
Lutheran Church. The Rev. Daniel
Baker officiated with burial in
the Wanderer’s Rest Cemetery.
Wilmer R.
Broitzman, was born on September
28, 1914, on a farm east of
Gordonsville, the son of Bernard
and Lizzie (Wolff) Broitzman. He
was baptized on October 18,
1914, at the Bethlehem Lutheran
Church, by J. O. Stahling and
confirmed at the First Lutheran
Church, Northwood. On November
12, 1939, Wilmer married Nadine
Olson at the Zion Lutheran
Church. The couple farmed all of
their married life together.
Wilmer was a very active person,
who helped construct the new
church in 1954 of which he took
great pride. He served as
trustee of Bethlehem Lutheran
for eight years. He served as
secretary/treasurer for the
rural school and also trustee
for Wanderer’s Rest Cemetery for
many years. He enjoyed mowing
his lawn and planting flowers.
Survivors include
his wife, Nadine; sons, Roger,
Lonny and Dennis and wife, Joyce
Broitzman; nine grandchildren;
four great-grandchildren;
brother, Harold Broitzman;
sister, Mable Perleberg; and
many nieces and nephews.
Wilmer was
preceded in death by his
parents; brothers, Leon, Martin
and Edward; sister, Edna Liedal;
daughter-in-law, Diane
Broitzman; and a
great-granddaughter, Amanda
Blankenship.

Joyce Rosalyn Kuhlmann

Joyce
Rosalyn Kuhlmann, 72, of
Northwood, died on Sunday, June
29, 2003, at the Muse-Norris
Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason
City.
Funeral services will be held at
11:00 a.m., on Thursday, July 3,
at the First Lutheran Church,
Northwood, with Rev. Allan J.
Stoa officiating. Burial will be
in the Sunset Rest Cemetery in
Northwood. Visitation will be
from 5-7:00 p.m., on Wednesday,
at the Conner Colonial Chapel,
Northwood. Visitation will also
be one hour prior to the service
time on Thursday at the church.
The family of Joyce Roselyn
Kuhlmann has requested that
memorial contributions be made
to the Muscular Dystrophy
Association in her memory.
Joyce Roselyn
Kuhlmann, was born on December
6, 1930 in Los Angles,
California, the daughter of
Edward C. and Thekla (See)
Volger. She attended and
graduated from the John Marshall
High School in Hollywood,
California. After completing her
schooling she worked for the E.
Brooks Randall, insurance
company in Sunset Blvd,
California. She married Gaylord
"LaVon" Kuhlmann on September
21, 1957, in the Hollywood
Lutheran Church in Hollywood,
California. In 1959, they moved
to Northwood where she loved and
raised her family. Joyce worked
for a period of time as a
secretary in Mason City.
She enjoyed
bowling and was a secretary and
treasurer for her bowling
league, going to family
functions in Texas and
California and enjoyed her
birthday club in Northwood, but
her great love and enjoyment was
her family and many friends. She
was a member of the First
Lutheran Church and her church
circle in Northwood.

her memory is her husband, LaVon
Kuhlmann of Northwood; three
children and their families,
daughter, Gail Kuhlmann and her
children, Gerad and Josh
Kuhlmann and Cody Cox of
Northwood, daughter, Linda
Carlson of Northwood, and a
son-in-law, Steve Carlson of
Manly and their children, Amber,
Laura and Garrett Carlson, all
of Northwood, daughter, Kathy
Rush and her husband, Kurt and
their children, Aaron and Jordan
Rush of Mason City;
mother-in-law, Hazel Kuhlmann of
Northwood; a twin sister, Joanne
McCrillis and her husband, Dick
of Rockwall, Texas; a brother,
Don Volger and his wife, Donna
of Glendale, California; five
sisters-in-law, Cherie Volger of
Apple Valley, California, Rosela
Volger of Idaho, Marcile Perry
and her husband, Dean of New
Ulm, Minnesota, Beverly Davis
and her husband, Glen of Ft.
Meyers, Florida, Dodie Belanger
and her husband, Jerry of New
Hope, Minnesota; several nieces
and nephews as well as other
relatives and many friends.
She was preceded
in death by her parents; son,
Gary Kuhlmann; and three
brothers, Robert, Edward and
Henry Volger.
