Jane L. Last

Jane
L. Last, 63, of Ottumwa, died on
Friday, July 4, 2003, at her
home.
Funeral services were held on
Tuesday, at the Reece Funeral
Home in Ottumwa, with Rev. Lon
Lewis officiating. Christina
Court #3 Order of Amaranth will
also conduct services at the
funeral home. Burial was in the
Westview Cemetery in Kirkville.
Jane was born on
August 20, 1939 in Ottumwa, to
Darrell and Ruth Jones Shaw. She
married John Last on April 15,
1961. They divorced in 1989.
They moved to Forest City in
June of 1967, then to Northwood
in December of 1969. She worked
for the Northwood Anchor
Publishing Co. from 1977 to 1985
and for the Worth County Dept.
of Human Services from 1989 to
1993.
She was a member
and presently Royal Matron Elect
of Christina Court #3 Order of
Amaranth and a member of the
Rose Chapter #552 Order of the
Eastern Star. She was a member
of the First Lutheran Church and
Abigail Circle. She served eight
years as President of the First
Lutheran Women and two years on
the Cluster II Leadership Team.
She was active in Iowa Lutheran
Via de Cristo, serving as the
Forest City area representative
on the State Secretariat and in
various positions for the Forest
City Via de Cristo weekends. She
was also active in Girl scouts
for 10 years, two years a a
Junior Girl Scout Leader, four
years as Neighborhood Chairman
for Northwood-Kensett and one
term on the North Iowa Girl
Scout Council. She spent 10
years in the Cub Scout program,
member of the TUNE board, Red
Cross disaster team and life
member of the Worth County
Historical Society, including
co-chairman of the Antique Show
for several years.
Surviving is a
daughter, Catherine M. Hove of
Mason City; two sons, John David
Last of Ottumwa and Robert L.
Last of Oskaloosa; four
grandchildren, Nicholas Hove,
Zachary and Micah Chavez, all of
Mason City and Joseph Last of
Ottumwa; and a brother, Robert
L. (Connie) Shaw of Ottumwa.
She was preceded
in death by her parents.

Mildred M. Russell
August 5, 2003
Mildred
M. Russell, 94, of Sheridan,
Wyoming, died on Friday, July 4,
2003, at the Sheridan Manor.
Memorial services were held at
the First United Methodist
Church in Sheridan, with the
Rev. Don Derryberry officiating.
Inurnment of the cremains were
in the Sunset Rest Cemetery,
Northwood, on July 30.
She was born on
October 15, 1908 in Northwood,
Iowa, to Louis and Mina “Minnie”
(Hanson) Madson. She grew up and
attended school in Northwood.
She received her teaching degree
from State Teacher’s College,
Cedar Falls. She married Dr.
Bryan F. Russell on June 30,
1934 in Northwood. She taught
school in Iowa and in Cody,
Wyoming, before coming to
Sheridan. Dr. B.F. Russell died
in 1995.
Mildred was very
active in Sheridan, being a
member of the First United
Methodist Church, PEO
Sisterhood, American Legion
Auxiliary, Sheridan Woman’s
Club, Daughters of the Nile,
United Methodist Women, Fine
Arts Club, Sheridan Book Review
Club and a life member of the
Friends of the Library.
Her husband;
brother, Alton Madson; and
sister, Myrtle M. Rider; and her
parents, preceded her in death.
Survivors include
a son, Bryan W. Russell and
wife, Edith of Cheyenne,
Wyoming; daughter, Mildred R.
Marsh and husband, Robert of
Billings, Montana;
grandchildren, Scott and Wendy
Marsh of Bothell, Washington and
Kirsti Marsh of Newcastle,
Washington; and two
great-grandchildren.
Those attending
the memorial service for Mildred
M. Russell, who passed away July
4, 2003 and her husband, the
late Dr. Bryan F. Russell, who
passed away in 1995, were her
daughter, Mildred and husband,
Robert Marsh of Billings,
Montana; son, Bryan and wife,
Edith Russell of Cheyenne;
nephew, Tom and wife, Trudy
Ryder of St. Louis; Virginia
Thompson, Lucretia Thompson,
Anne and Allen Hanna, Lloyd
Madson and Jane Podgorniak.
Services were held on Wednesday,
July 30, with Rev. Richard
Jensen officiating at the Sunset
Rest Cemetery. The group met for
lunch following the service at
Danjo's Restaurant to get
reacquainted and reminisce. Mrs.
Russell grew up and attended
school in Northwood in the early
1900s.

Ruth Marie Elizabeth McMullin

Ruth Marie Elizabeth McMullin,
96, of Grinnell, formerly of
Hanlontown, died on Tuesday,
July 8, 2003, at the St. Francis
Manor in Grinnell.
Funeral services were held on
Saturday, at the Grace Lutheran
Church in Hanlontown, with
Pastor Kris Snyder officiating.
Burial was in the Brush Point
Cemetery, rural Hanlontown.
Ruth Marie
Elizabeth McMullin, was born on
December 23, 1906 in DeKalb,
Illinois, the daughter of Axel
and Caroline (Bauer) Strombom.
She attended and graduated from
the Hanlontown High School and
also attended Cedar Falls
Teachers College. After
completing her schooling she
taught school west of Kensett
for one year. She married Norvel
McMullin on August 6, 1927 in
Mason City. He preceded her in
death on August 30, 1976. In
1928, Ruth and Norvel moved to
Hanlontown where she loved and
cared for her family.
She enjoyed
flowers and gardening but her
great love and enjoyment was her
church and family. She was a
member of the Grace Lutheran
Church, church circle, Sunday
School Teacher and the Blossom
Belles Garden Club, all in
Hanlontown.
Left to cherish
her memory are her two sons,
Richard McMullin and his wife,
Priscilla of Overland Park,
Kansas and Roger McMullin and
his wife, Mary of Grinnell,
Iowa; four grandchildren; two
great-grandchildren; as well as
other relatives and friends.
She was preceded
in death by her parents;
husband; infant daughter, Linda
Faye; a brother, Harold
Strombom; and three sisters,
Hortense Smith, Mildred Adams
and Helen Oswald.

Mickey Elwin Arnold
July 15, 2003
Mickey
Elwin Arnold, 76, of rural St.
Ansgar, died on Wednesday, July
9, 2003, at Northwood, Iowa.
Funeral services were held on
Saturday, at the Northwood
United Methodist Church, with
Rev. Richard Jensen officiating.
Burial was in the Warren
Township Cemetery, McCallsburg,
Iowa. The Schroeder & Sites
Funeral Home, Northwood, was in
charge of the arrangements.
Mickey was born
on May 20, 1927 in Ellston,
Iowa, to Leroy and Mary Ann
(Clark) Arnold. He graduated
from the Grand River High School
in 1944 and attended one year at
AIB in Des Moines. Mickey joined
the U.S. Navy and was honorably
discharged in 1946. He moved to
Nevada, Iowa, where he farmed.
Mickey married Geraldine Lura on
August 27, 1950 in Nevada. They
moved to the Northwood area in
1951, farming east of Northwood.
Mickey was an
avid farmer, snowmoblier, boater
and golfer. He enjoyed playing
pool while wintering in Texas.
He was a member of the Northwood
United Methodist Church, was
past president of the Farm
Bureau, a member of the Odd
Fellows, a lifetime member of
the VFW and the Northwood
Country Club. Mickey enjoyed his
grandchildren, going to their
events and being supportive of
their activities.
Mickey was
preceded in death by his
parents; and one daughter,
Linda.
He is survived by
his wife, Geraldine of
Northwood; two sons, Steve
(Kathy) Arnold of Northwood and
Brian (Tami) Arnold of Garner,
Iowa; two daughters, LeaAnn
Hauge of Jacksonville, Florida
and Sue (Jim) Hale of Pleasant
Hill, Iowa; one son-in-law,
Larry Hauge of Northwood; nine
grandchildren, Melissa, Chris
and Brandon Hauge, Ryan and
Derek Hale, Madison and Sam
Arnold, Adrian and Lauren
Arnold; two great-grandchildren,
Sidney Hauge and Harper Hyde;
two sisters, Cenith Carlson of
Minneapolis, Minnesota and Berva
Mills of Boone, Iowa.

Eric Mahlon Pelham
August 12, 2003
Eric Mahlon Pelham, 25, of
Visalia, California, died on
Saturday, July 12, 2003.
his memorial service was held on
Friday, at the Trinity Christian
Reformed Church in Visalia.
Eric is the
grandson of the late Mahlon
(Pinky) and Maxine Pelham and
the nephew of Craig Eckhart of
Northwood. Eric was born on
December 10, 1977 in Bellflower,
California. He attended the
Bellflower Christian Schools. He
received his BA in Biology from
Dordt College in Sioux Center,
Iowa in 2000. Upon graduation,
Eric moved to Visalia to teach
biology and chemistry at the
Central Valley Christian High
School. On July 19, 2001, Eric
married Kimberly Koetsier. On
February 14, 2003, Eric and Kim
rejoiced in the birth of their
son, Johnathan Mahlon. Eric
coached the CVC High School Boys
Varsity Soccer Team while
teaching at CVC.
Eric and Kimberly
were faithful members of the
Trinity Christian Reformed
Church in Visalia.
Eric is survived
by his wife, Kimberly Pelham;
his son, Johnathan; father and
mother, Mahlon and Gloria
Pelham; sister, Kristin; and
grandmother, Ida Den Ouden.
Eric’s extended family resides
in the Bellflower area and in
the Midwest. Kimberly’s family
in Visalia includes parents, Ron
and Beth Koetsier; siblings,
Kathryn Koetsier, Kandice
Koetsier, Ronnie and Amber
Koetsier; and nephews, Dylan and
Ronnie (Trey) Koetsier III. The
grandparents are Henry and
Margie Koetsier and John and
Hattie Boeve. He has numerous
extended family members in
Tulare County.

Alice K Watts
July 22, 2003
Alice
K Watts, 80, of Northwood, died
on Tuesday, July 15, 2003, at
the Mercy Health Care Center,
Mason City, Iowa.
Memorial services were held on
Saturday, at the First Lutheran
Church, Northwood, with Rev.
Paul Holmer and Pastor Jon
Fredrickson officiating. Burial
was in the Sunset Rest Cemetery,
Northwood. The Schroeder & Sites
Funeral Home, Northwood, was in
charge of the arrangements.
Alice was born on
November 23, 1922 in Northwood,
Iowa, to John O. and Martha
(Luth) Fredrickson. She was
baptized and confirmed at the
Northwood Lutheran Church,
Northwood. She attended the
Northwood High School. Alice
married Wendell Watts on
September 27, 1942 in Northwood
and they celebrated their 60th
anniversary in September of
2002. Wendell preceded her in
death on March 7, 2003.
Alice enjoyed
people and baking. She supplied
the town with many good things
to eat, particularly noted were
her pies and donuts. She was a
dispatcher for the transit van
and worked as a waitress for
many years. Alice and Wendell
enjoyed fishing and had many
great adventures doing just
that. Her greatest passion was
her family, especially her
grandchildren and
great-grandchildren.
Alice was
preceded in death by her
parents; husband, Wendell; and
two brothers, Donald and Arnold.
She is survived
by two sons, Jim Watts and his
wife, Chen of Sterling, Alaska
and Tom Watts and his wife, Joan
of Northwood; two daughters,
Kandie and her husband, Ron
Shupe of Northwood and Wendie
and her husband, Roger Urbatch
of Woodbridge, Virginia; a
niece, Jann Ramus and her
husband, John of St. Paul,
Minnesota; grandchildren, Sue
Lynn Height, Dan Watts, Kim
Helgeson, Chad Watts, Bryan
Shupe, Brad Shupe, Kelly
Atkinson, Kerry Urbatch, Anna
Eimes and Amy Urbatch; 13
great-grandchildren; sisters,

Marvyleen V. "Babe" Pike

Marvyleen
V. "Babe" Pike, 81, entered into
eternity on Thursday, July 17,
2003, at the Muse Norris Hospice
Inpatient Unit, Mason City,
Iowa.
Funeral services were held at
the Schroeder & Sites Funeral
Home, Northwood, on Monday.
Burial was in the Sunset Rest
Cemetery, Northwood.
Marvyleen was
born on October 25, 1921 in
Butler County, Iowa, to George
and Dena (Havinga) Naber. She
accepted the Lord Jesus Christ
as her Savior in November, 1929.
She attended the New Hartford
School. She married Roy C. Pike
on December 27, 1939. They
farmed in Mitchell and Worth
Counties and later moved to
Northwood. Babe worked at the
Viking Restaurant and later at
the school cafeteria for 16
years in Northwood.
Babe was preceded
in death by her parents;
husband, Roy; five
brothers-in-law; and three
sisters-in-law.
She is survived
by four children, Robert Pike
and wife, Darla of Forest City,
Iowa, Judy Pike of Mason City,
Gerald Pike and wife, Kathy of
Cottage Grove, Minnesota and
Linda Rice and husband, Richard
of Lake Mills, Iowa; sisters,
Arvada Pickering of Cedar Falls,
Iowa and Audrey Schoeman of New
Hartford, Iowa; brother, George
Naber and wife, Dorothy of Cedar
Falls; 10 grandchildren; six
great-grandchildren; and many
nieces and nephews.

Henry B. Logemann

Henry
B. Logemann, Jr., 73,
affectionately known in life as
Junior Logemann, died on
Saturday, July 19, 2003, at the
Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa,
Mason City.
Funeral services were held on
Saturday, at the First Lutheran
Church, Northwood, with Pastor
Allan Stoa officiating. Burial
was in the Sunset Rest Cemetery,
Northwood. The Schroeder & Sites
Funeral Home, Northwood, was in
charge of the arrangements.
Junior was born
in Deer Creek Township, Worth
County, Iowa, on June 20, 1930,
the only child of Henry B. and
Melvine (Tollefsrud) Logemann.
He was baptized into the
Lutheran Church on July 9, 1930,
by the Rev. John Yevasakker and
confirmed at the First Lutheran
Church, by Rev. O. H. Hovey in
the spring of 1944. He received
his elementary education in the
Deer Creek Township Grade School
and graduated from the Northwood
High School in 1948. Junior
served his country in the Army
during the Korean conflict.
After his honorable discharge,
he returned to Northwood and
farmed until retirement.
Junior was a
member of the First Lutheran
Church, Northwood and a lifetime
member of the VFW Post #6779 in
Northwood. He attended many
lutefisk suppers throughout the
area and enjoyed eating at
various restaurants in a 60-mile
radius of Northwood. He also
bought many lunches. Junior
enjoyed visiting with many new
acquaintances he met at various
shopping malls. He was a good
carpenter and enjoyed building
on his farm and also loved
gardening.
Survivors include
many cousins and friends,
especially Arlys Reeder and
Bonnie Brevig, of Northwood.
He was preceded
in death by his parents.

Clifford O. Foley Jr.
August 5, 2003
Clifford O. Foley, Jr., 70, died
on Tuesday, July 22, 2003, at
Northlake, Illinois.
Funeral services were held on
Friday, at the Northlake
Lutheran Church. He was buried
in the family plot in Elmhurst
Cemetery, Elmhurst, Illinois,
beside his mother, father and
brother.
Clifford was the
son of former Northwood area
residents, Clifford O. and
Gertrude Popera Foley, Sr. He
lived in and around the Chicago
area all his life except for two
years spent in the service. He
served in Germany during the
Korean Conflict in the Service
Battery, 14th Armored Field
Artillery Battalion, "Hell on
Wheels", serving from 1953 to
1955.
He was a member
of the American Legion Howard H.
Rhode Post #888 and the Veterans
of Foreign Wars. He had many
relatives in this area and
enjoyed visiting here as long as
his health permitted.
Survivors include
his wife, Dolores C. Foley; son,
Clifford H. Foley; and brother
of Arlene (the late Ed)
Kannanberg.
He was preceded
in death by his parents; and
brother, Richard Foley.
Florence Klitzke
and Larry Foley of Northwood,
Ruben Foley of Apple Valley,
Minnesota, Mrs. Doug McMullen of
Spencer, Iowa and Mrs. Nate
Westphal of Meriden, Iowa,
attended the service.

Inez (Hillman) Henrichs
July 29, 2003
Inez
(Hillman) Henrichs, of Walnut
Creek, California, died at the
age of 79, on Friday, July 25,
2003.
Memorial services will be held
on Saturday, August 2, at 10:30
a.m., at the First Lutheran
Church, Northwood, for relatives
and friends with Rev. Al Stoa
officiating. Cremation will be
in Walnut Creek.
Inez was born on
August 10, 1923, to Arther and
Bertha (Hanson) Hillman. She was
baptized on November 4, 1923 and
confirmed in the Lutheran faith
on July 11, 1937. She attended
the country schools in Worth
County and worked at Wilson’s
Meat Packing in Albert Lea,
Minnesota and at the Munsingwear
Sewing Center. She married
George Henrichs of Albert Lea in
1945. To this union one daughter
was born, Judy (Henrichs)
Reinorts and two grandchildren,
Jason and Rebecca. Inez loved
her family. Inez and her husband
lived in California and Silver
Springs, Nevada most of their
life.
Left to cherish
her memory are her daughter,
Judy and her husband, Tom;
grandchildren, Jason and
Rebecca; four sisters, Mavis
Roppe and husband, DeWayne of
Northwood, Janice Skogen and
husband, Merle of Albert Lea,

Blanche Luella Anderson

Blanche
Luella Anderson, 95, of Kensett,
died on Tuesday, July 29, 2003,
at the Lutheran Retirement Home
in Northwood.
Funeral services were held on
Friday, at the Elk Creek
Lutheran Church, rural Kensett,
with Rev. Selmer G. "Sam" Hernes
officiating. Burial was in the
Elk Creek Lutheran Church
Cemetery, rural Kensett. The
Conner Colonial Chapel,
Northwood, was in charge of the
arrangements.
Blanche Luella
Anderson, was born on February
17, 1908 in rural Hanlontown in
Worth County, Iowa, the daughter
of George and Emma (Lee)
Brunsvold. She was baptized at
the Concordia Lutheran Church,
rural Joice and reaffirmed the
faith of her baptism through
confirmation at the Somber
Lutheran Church, rural Lake
Mills. Blanche attended the
rural Brunsvold School in
Fertile Township #1 and
graduated from the Hanlontown
High School. After completing
her schooling she worked for the
W. A. Crosby Drug Store in
Hanlontown. She married Morris
Anderson on February 19, 1942 at
the Lutheran Parsonage in
Northwood. He preceded her in
death on July 6, 1987. After
their marriage together they
farmed on the Anderson farm for
many years in rural Kensett.
She enjoyed
embroidering, tatting, baking
and cooking. She was a very
active member of the Elk Creek
Lutheran Church, rural Kensett.
Left to cherish
her memory is a sister, Alice
Charlson of Hanlontown; a
brother, Arnold Brunsvold and
his wife, Evelyn of Albert Lea,
Minnesota; sisters-in-law,
Margaret Sigmond, Amey Johnson,
Marcella Anderson and Margaret
Brunsvold, all of Northwood; and
many nieces and nephews, as well
as other relatives and friends.
She was preceded
in death by her parents;
husband, Morris; two brothers,
Leon and Earl Brunsvold; and a
sister, Myrtle Flugum.

Harold Hagen

Harold
Hagen, 72, of Joice, Iowa, died
on Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at
the Lutheran Retirement Home in
Northwood.
A
memorial celebration was held on
Friday, at the Bethany Lutheran
Church in Joice. The Mittelstadt
Funeral Home was in charge of
the arrangements.
He is survived by
his wife of 50 years, Clarice;
daughter, Cyndy and her husband,
Lynn Bartness of Lake Mills;
daughter, Patti and her husband,
Larry Brekken of Northwood; son,
Al Hagen of Lake Mills; five
grandchildren, Jeff, Drew,
Heath, Jessica and Brooke; four
brothers, Eldon and wife, Avis,
Irvin and wife, Gloria, Raymond
and wife, Lavonne and Marlin and
wife, Donna; brother-in-law,
Curtis Arneson and wife, Dilla;
sister-in-law, Carol Luecht; as
well as many family members and
friends.
Harold was
preceded in death by his
parents, Martin and Ida Hagen.
