C. Peterson, 96 of Lake Mills,
Iowa, died on Monday, December
1, 2003, at the Lake Mills Care
Center in Lake Mills.
Funeral services
were held on Friday, at the
Winnebago Lutheran Church rural
Leland, with Rev. Bill Peters
officiating. Burial was in the
Winnebago Lutheran Cemetery.
Julia Christina
Peterson, was born on August 1,
1907, in Winnebago County, Iowa,
to Job and Inger (Sydness)
Kloster. She married Peter J.
Peterson on March 12, 1930 at
the Winnebago Lutheran Church in
rural Leland. Julia enjoyed her
family, gardening, quilt making
and crocheting. She was also
employed at the Lake Mills Care
Center for several years.
Julia is survived
by one son, Parnell and his
wife, Mary Peterson of Mason
City, Iowa; one daughter, Marion
and her husband, Phillip Brown
of Lynchburg, Virginia; six
grandchildren; nine
great-grandchildren; and four
great-great-grandchildren; one
sister, Inga Waite of Paulsbo,
Washington; along with several
nieces, nephews, cousins and
other relatives.
She was preceded
in death by her parents; her
husband of 60 years, Peter J.
Peterson on July 26, 1990;
sisters, Anna Dahlan, Thea
Peterson and Alma Rygh; and
brothers, Olaf, Andrew and John
Kloster.

Mrs. M. P. (Sue H.) Allison, 92,
of Northwood, died on Wednesday,
December 3, 2003, at home.
Private family
services were held on Saturday
at the Woodland Cemetery, Des
Moines.
Sue H. Allison,
was born on July 18, 1911 at Des
Moines, a daughter of John and
Georgia (Likes) Rockafellow. She
was a graduate of the St. Joseph
Academy, Des Moines. She
attended Grinnell College,
Grinnell and the University of
Iowa, graduating with a Bachelor
of Science Degree. Sue married
Dr. M. P. Allison on June 3,
1933 at Galena, Illinois. They
were married 66 years. Following
her husband’s retirement, they
moved to Wabasha, Minnesota,
where they spent many hours
boating on the Mississippi
River.
She enjoyed
traveling, gardening and
especially her family. She was a
member of the First Lutheran
Church of Northwood, church
circle and Chapter ES PEO.
Survivors include
one son, James Allison of
Lincoln, Nebraska; two
granddaughters, Nicole Allison
of Denver, Colorado and
Elizabeth Foss of Webster City.
She was preceded
in death by her husband, Dr.
M.P. Allison; a daughter, Mary
Foss; and one brother, John
Rockafellow.
The Conner
Colonial Chapel, Northwood, was
in charge of the arrangements.

Ruby Mae Ryan, 94, of the Good
Samaritan Center, Albert Lea,
formerly of the Senior Court on
Maplehill Drive, died on
Thursday, December 4, 2003, at
the Good Samaritan Center.
Funeral services
were held on Monday, at the
Ascension Lutheran Church in
Albert Lea, with Pastor Richard
Spande officiating. Interment
was in the Geneva Cemetery.
Ruby was born on
February 18, 1909 in Frazee,
Minnesota, the daughter of Simon
and Mary (Martin) Johnson. She
graduated from the Owatonna High
School in 1927. On July 30,
1927, she married Clarence T.
Ryan in Northwood.
Survivors include
her five children, Lola (Gordon)

Home in Northwood.
Funeral services

United Methodist Church,

in the Stateline Cemetery, rural
Northwood. The Conner Colonial
Chapel in Northwood was in
charge of the arrangements.
Crissy Jean
Perry, was born on December 25,
1900 in rural Gordonsville,
Minnesota, the daughter of C. W.
and Grace (Beighley) Brown. She
attended and received her
education in Gordonsville. She
married Elmer “Ole” Perry on
June 6, 1919, in Albert Lea,
Minnesota. During her life Jean
worked for various restaurants
in Northwood.
She enjoyed
crocheting, tatting and reading.
She was a member of the United
Methodist Church in Northwood,
the church circles, Rebekah
Lodge and Royal Neighbors.
Left to cherish
her memory are her seven

Gary Dahle, 65, of Sauk Centre,
Minnesota, died on Friday,
December 5, 2003, at his
daughter’s home in St. Louis
Park, Minnesota.
Memorial services

Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home,
Northwood, with Rev. Timothy
Nappe officiating. Inurnment
will take place in the Kensett
Cemetery, Kensett. Friends may
greet the family after 1:00 p.m.
on Saturday at the funeral Home.
Gary was born on
April 14, 1938 in Kensett, Iowa,
to Melvin and Edvina (Hanson)
Dahle. He was baptized and
confirmed at the Bethany
Lutheran Church in Kensett. He
grew up the the Kensett area
graduating from the Kensett High
School in 1956. After graduating
from high school, he moved to
the Minneapolis area spending
the rest of his life in that
area. He married Marjorie Heimer
in 1974 in Watertown, South
Dakota. He managed the Zayer
Shopper’s City in the Twin
Cities area for over 25 years.
He was an active
member of the Assembly of God
Church in Sauk Centre,
Minnesota.
Survivors include
his children, Rosalie and her
husband, John Johnson of St.
Louis Park, Minnesota, Karla
Garland of Des Moines, Iowa,
Stephen Vick of Plymouth,
Minnesota, David Dahle and his
wife, Cae of Sauk Centre,
Minnesota and Frank Chase and
his wife, Renee of Waverly,
Minnesota; several
grandchildren; one

Charles Gentz, 88, of Northwood,
died on Saturday, December 6,
2003, at the Muse-Norris Hospice
Inpatient Unit in Mason City,
surrounded by his family.
Funeral services
will be held at 2:00 p.m., on
Wednesday, December 10, 2003, at
the First Lutheran Church,
Northwood, with Rev. Paul Holmer
officiating. Burial will be in
the Sunset Rest Cemetery in
Northwood. Visitation will be
from 4-7:00 p.m., on Tuesday, at
the Conner Colonial Chapel,
Northwood and one hour prior to
the service time on Wednesday at
the church.
Raymond was born
on February 14, 1915, to William
Sr. and Mathilda (Hansen) Gentz
in Meltonville, Iowa. He was
baptized and confirmed in the
Lutheran Faith. He attended
school in Otranto, Heartland
District and District Number 5
east of Northwood. He married
Dorothy Schmidt on March 3,
1940, at the First Lutheran
Parsonage in Northwood, by Rev.
Tolo. Raymond and Dorothy began
farming north of Kensett in
1940. In 1944, they moved east
of Northwood where they made
their home for the past 60
years.
Raymond enjoyed
his family, especially his
grandchildren and
great-grandchildren. He also
enjoyed farming, fishing,
playing cards and the annual
Labor Day Gentz family camping
trip. He was a member of the
First Lutheran Church in
Northwood.
Left to cherish
his memory is his wife of 63
years, Dorothy Gentz of
Northwood; three children,
Ronald Gentz and his wife,
Kathy, Larry Gentz and his wife,
Kathy and David Gentz and his
wife, Cheryl, all of Northwood;

Alma P. Rake, was
born on September 2, 1919 in
Rake, Iowa, the daughter of
Arent and Petra (Holm) Rake. She
grew up in the Rake area and
graduated from the Rake High
School. Alma married Andrew
Christiansen on May 2, 1942 in
Seattle, Washington.

2003, at her home, surrounded by
her family.
Funeral services

Northwood, with Rev. Paul Holmer
officiating. Burial will be in
the Sunset Rest Cemetery in
Northwood. Visitation will be
from 5-8:00 p.m., on Wednesday,
at the Conner Colonial Chapel,
Northwood. Visitation will also
be one hour prior to the service
time on Thursday at the church.
Cheryl Kay
Bottleman, was born on May 1,
1943 in Silver Lake, Iowa, the
daughter of Adolph and Grace
(McGarraugh) Reyerson. She was
baptized at the Silver Lake
Lutheran Church and reaffirmed
the faith of her baptism through
confirmation at the First
Lutheran Church in Northwood.
Cheryl moved to Northwood at the
age of three years and attended
Northwood Community Schools,
graduating from the Northwood
High School. She married Duwayne
Bottleman on May 19, 1962, at
the First Lutheran Church in
Northwood. During her life
Cheryl worked for the Lutheran
Retirement Home in Northwood,
babysat for various families in
Northwood, worked for the Midway
Cafe in Northwood and for
Service Master in Mason City.
She enjoyed
camping, word circle, puzzles,
and visiting with neighbors. She
was a member of the First
Lutheran Church and the church
circle in Northwood.

her memory is her husband,

"Art" M. Bendickson, 77, of
Northwood, died on Monday,
December 8, 2003, at the Manly
Nursing and Rehab. Center in
Manly.
Funeral services
were held on Saturday, at the
First Lutheran Church,
Northwood, with Rev. Paul Holmer
officiating. Burial was in the
Sunset Rest Cemetery in
Northwood, with full military
honors by the Our Buddies VFW
Memorial Post #6779 of
Northwood. The Conner Colonial
Chapel, Northwood, was in charge
of the arrangements.
Art Bendickson,
was born on April 21, 1926 in
Emmons, Minnesota, the son of
George and Luella (Hanson)
Bendickson, the first of four
children. He attended school at
Lake Mills and graduated from
the Emmons High School. He was
inducted into the U.S. Navy in
1946, serving overseas during
World War II until his honorable
discharge in 1948. He married
Eunice Schilling on May 29,
1949, at the Bethlehem Lutheran
Church in Myrtle, Minnesota. Art
worked as a mechanic for
Chrysler garages in Albert Lea,
Minnesota and Northwood for 25
years, and was the Worth County
shop mechanic for 15 years until
his retirement in 1987.
He enjoyed
fishing, camping and attending
athletic events, especially the
Waldorf College games. Art was
very active and a life member in
the Our Buddies VFW Memorial
Post #6779 of Northwood. He also
held positions in the 3rd
District VFW. He was veterans
affairs commissioner of Worth
County for many years. While his
sons were growing up, he was a
Boy Scout Leader for a number of
years. When the grandchildren
from Omaha came to visit, he
would take them fishing to area
lakes, which they always looked
forward to.
Art was afflicted
with cancer 10 years ago, with
frequent reoccurrences, but
never complained having
treatments many times. He was
one of the honorary chairpersons
for the Relay for Life in
Northwood in 2001. He lost a
valiant battle from cancer on
Monday, December 8. He was a
member of the First Lutheran
Church in Northwood.

in the Sunset Rest Cemetery in
Northwood.
Margaret was born
on January 12, 1904 in
Northwood, to Edward D. and M.
Julia (Mitchell) Wright. She
attended schools in Iowa,
Washington and Minnesota. She
attended Iowa State Teachers
College in Cedar Falls and
taught several years in Worth
County Schools. She married Earl
D. Schaub of Kensett on November
28, 1927 in Motley, Minnesota.
Margaret was
active in 4-H, Red Cross, the
United Methodist Church women's
organizations and Eastern Star.
Margaret loved to paint and used
her talent to make beautiful
hand painted china plates,
porcelain dolls and ceramics.
She loved gardening and had done
extensive research on her family
history. Margaret lived in her
own home until October 2003 and
was looking forward to her 100th
birthday party with family and
friends.
Survivors include
her daughter, Ruth (Albert) Robb
of Northwood; sons, Kenneth
(Karen) Schaub of Austin,
Minnesota, James (Carol) Schaub
of Northwood and
daughter-in-law, Joan Schaub of
Westfield Center, Ohio; sister,

LaVonne E. Anderson, 84, of
Sacramento, California, died on
Thursday, November 27, 2003.
Inurnment was
held on Friday, December 5, at
the Mount Vernon Cemetery in
Sacramento, California.
LaVonne E.
Anderson, daughter of L. O.
Thompson and Nettie E.
(Thompson) Willey, was born on
September 29, 1919 in Northwood,
Iowa. She graduated from high
school in Northwood in 1939 and
later married Stanley E.
Anderson. During World War II
she worked in Tacoma and
Seattle, Washington. Shortly
before her husband’s death on
the battlefield in Belgium, she
moved to Los Angeles and resided
with her sister, Genevieve. She
retired in 1970 from the Pacific
Mutual Life Insurance Company
after 24 years of service, due
to ill health. In 1973 she and
her sister, Genevieve,
accompanied by their father and
brother, Newton, moved to
Sacramento.
Survivors include
her sister, Ruth Opal Gordon;
nieces, Roxanna Davant and
Bonita Leary; and nephews, Randy
and Bill Gordon of Bozeman,
Montana.

Wilmer
Kuntz, 85, of Northwood, died on
Wednesday, December 10, 2003, at
the Lutheran Retirement Home in
Northwood.
Funeral services
were held on Saturday, at the
Deer Creek Lutheran Church,
Carpenter, with Rev. Wayne
Ellingson officiating. Burial
was in the Deer Creek Cemetery,
Carpenter. The Schroeder & Sites
Funeral Home, Northwood, was in
charge of the arrangements.
Wilmer was born
on October 12, 1918 in Hayfield,
Minnesota. He married Mildred
Larson on December 17, 1944 in
Northwood. They farmed around
Northwood, Austin, Minnesota,
Swaledale and Carpenter. When
they retired from farming they
moved into St. Ansgar. He then
worked for the St. Ansgar
Elevator. When he retired, he
kept very busy doing yard work
for numerous neighbors. They
moved into the Lutheran
Retirement Home, Northwood in
1999.
Wilmer's hobbies
included horseshoes, fishing,
bowling, playing cards, camping
and watching sports. He was a
Luther League sponsor and Deacon
at the Deer Creek Lutheran
Church. He especially enjoyed
time with family and friends.
Wilmer is
survived by two sons, Alan Kuntz
and his wife, Diana of Mason
City and Dennis Kuntz of
Northwood; two daughters, Joan
Adams and husband, Joe of
Sheffield and Marilyn Skellenger
and husband, Ron of Northwood;

Patricia
R. "Patty" Bendickson, 52, of
Forest City, died on Thursday,
December 11, 2003, at the Muse
Norris Hospice Outpatient Unit
in Mason City.
Memorial services
were held on Monday, at the
Immanuel Lutheran Church in
Forest City, with Rev. Bill
Peters and Rev. David Bolstorff
officiating. The family requests
memorials be directed to the
Waldorf College Athletic
Department.
Patricia (Patty)
Rae (Johnson) Bendickson, was
born on June 24, 1951 in Mason
City, Iowa, the daughter of
Leonard and Betty (Shriver)
Johnson. She attended the
Northwood-Kensett Schools where
she graduated in 1969. She
married Barry Bendickson on June
24, 1972 at the Silver Lake
Lutheran Church in rural
Northwood. Patty worked for the
Northwestern Bell Telephone
Company for nine years. She then
began working at Waldorf College
in Forest City, first as a
switchboard operator and then
later as Administrative
Assistant to the Waldorf
Athletic Department, a position
she held for the past 25 years.
In 1993, she received the Holman
Community Service Award which is
based on distinguished service
to Waldorf College, the
community of Forest City,
church, civic organizations and
volunteer efforts.
Throughout her
life, Patty had a passion for
her family and friends. She
enjoyed attending Forest City
Indian and Waldorf College
Warrior games and watching her
daughter, Tori as a cheerleader.
She also enjoyed watching all
the Waldorf College athletic
events and watching her husband,
Barry as men's assistant
basketball coach. In her spare
time she enjoyed exercising,
especially running and walking
outside around her family's
home. She loved animals,
especially dogs and had two at
home, Hercules and Pepsi Joe.
Pepsi Joe never left her side as
they had a special bond. Patty
had battled ALS for the past
months, but always had a
positive and cheerful outlook.
She loved knowing that God was
at her side. She was a member of
the Winnebago Lutheran Church in
rural Lake Mills.

her memory are her husband,

boyfriend, Ryan Eastvold of

of Casa Grande, Arizona, died on
Thursday, December 11, 2003.
Private services were held.
Douglas was born
on January 2, 1913, the son of
Samuel and Frances (Douglass)
Pangburn in Northwood. He was a
long-time businessman until
retiring and moving to Sun City,
Arizona in 1978.
Survivors include
his wife of 63 years, Florence;
son, Craig Pangburn of Casa
Grande, Arizona; daughter, Mary
Hrubetz of Joice; six
grandchildren; and six
great-grandchildren.
He was preceded
in death by his parents; and one
sister.

Roger Dean Bissette, 39, of
Noel, Missouri, died on Friday,
December 12, 2003, at the
Gravette Medical Center in
Gravette, Arkansas, in a car
accident.
Funeral services
were held on Wednesday, at the
Ozark Funeral Home in Noel, with
the Rev. Bob Cartwright
officiating. Burial was in the
Southwest City Cemetery in
Southwest City, Missouri, with
military rites.
Roger Bissette,
was born on December 10, 1964 in
Rupert, Idaho. He graduated from
the Northwood-Kensett High
School in 1983.
Survivors include
his wife, Tammy Bissette of
Noel; one daughter, Destiny
Bissette at home; two sons,
Brandon Bissette and Ryan
Nielson, both at home; one
step-son, Brian Collins of Noel;
his mother and step-father,
Dixie and Jerry Tiedeman of
Mason City; his father, Roger
“Pete” Bissette of Mason City;
one brother, Larry “Tony”
Bissette of Gravette, Arkansas;
one sister, Patti Jo Follmuth of
Mason City; and a very special
aunt and uncle, Goldie and Jerry
Hunt of Halloway, Minnesota.
He was preceded
in death by his twin daughters,
Kayla and Salina; and his

Norma
C. Anderson, 88, Lake Mills,
died on Saturday, December 13,
2003, at the Lake Mills Care
Center in Lake Mills, Iowa.
Funeral services
were held on Tuesday, at the
Salem Lutheran Church in Lake
Mills, with Roger Dykstra
officiating. Burial was in the
Salem Memorial Cemetery in Lake
Mills.
Norma Clarice
(Sorbo) Anderson, was born in
Silver Lake Township on December
13, 1915, the daughter of Ole
and Bertha (Ferley) Sorbo. She
was raised and educated in the
Lake Mills area. On June 7,
1936, Norma married Arthur M.
Anderson at the Silver Lake
Church. The couple made their
home in the Lake Mills area
their entire lives, during which
they owned and operated the
Gambles Store and the Skogmos
Store.
Norma was an
active member of the Salem
Lutheran Church in Lake Mills
and she had also been a member
of the American Legion Auxiliary
for 57 years.
Survivors include
her brother-in-law, Glen
Weinberger of Coulter, Iowa; two
nephews, David Weinberger and
Donald Weinberger; and two
nieces, Sandra Keehn and Linda
Stoddard.
Norma was
preceded in death by her
parents; husband, Arthur; and
two sisters, Alice Hauge and
Avanel Weinberger.

Louis Grundmeier, 82, of
Northwood, died on Saturday,
December 13, 2003, at his home.
Memorial services
were held on Friday, at the
Conner Colonial Chapel,
Northwood, with Rev. Richard
Jensen officiating. Military
honors will be at the funeral
home by the "Our Buddies VFW
Memorial Post #6779" of
Northwood. Inurnment will be at
a later date in the Manning
Cemetery in Manning, Iowa.
Grant Louis
Grundmeier, was born on March 8,
1921 in Manning, the son of
Clarence and Hulda (Jensen)
Grundmeier. He attended and
received his education in the
Manning Schools, graduating from
the Manning High School. After
completing his schooling he
owned and operated the Manning
Shopper. He married Pat Lawbaugh
on January 25, 1941 in Harlan,
Iowa. He was inducted into the
U.S. Navy on July 20, 1942 and
served overseas in the European,
African and Middle Eastern
Theaters, until his honorable
discharge on October 8, 1945.
After his honorable discharge he
returned to Manning and worked
with his dad in his hatchery. In
the early 1950's, the family
moved to Northwood, where they
owned and operated the
Grundmeier Hatchery until his
retirement in 1969.
Grant became a
professional photographer with
studios in Northwood and Osage,
specializing in portrait,
wedding and school photography
for 30 years. After his
retirement he worked part-time
at the True Value Hardware Store
in Northwood.
He enjoyed
writing, cooking, canning,
attending his fruit trees,
reading, learning and
encouraging, but his great love
and enjoyment was spending time
with his family and
grandchildren.

his memory is his wife, Pat
Grundmeier of Northwood; his
children, Sigrid of Phoenix,
Arizona, Gary of Kansas City,
Missouri and Patrick and his
wife, Roz of Gilbert, Arizona;

Zona Mae Luecht,
was born on May 15, 1939 in
Northwood, the daughter of
Leland and Olga (Dokken)
Baldwin. She attended and
received her education in the
Albert Lea School System,
graduating from the Albert Lea
High School. She married LeRoy
Luecht on May 18, 1957, at the
First Lutheran Church in Albert
Lea. After her marriage she
worked for 12 years at the Land
O' Lakes Company in Albert Lea.
Zona retired from Land O' Lakes
due to ill health.
She enjoyed
playing cards, bingo, games,
soap operas, animals, plants and
collecting elephants, but her
great love and enjoyment was her
family and grandchildren.

P. "Doc" Whitesell, 59, of
Kensett, died on Thursday,
December 18, 2003, at the Mercy
Medical Center-North Iowa in
Mason City, under the patient
care of the Hospice of North
Iowa.
Memorial services will be held
at 1:00 p.m., on Saturday,
January 17, 2004, at the Conner
Colonial Chapel, Northwood, with
Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating.
Military honors will be at the
funeral home by Our Buddies VFW
Memorial Post #6779 of
Northwood. Visitation will be
one hour prior to the service
time on Saturday at the chapel.
Inurnment will be at a later
date. According to his wishes
his body was cremated.
Gary was born on
September 20, 1944 in Sioux
City, Iowa and adopted into the
loving home of Paul and Clara
Whitesell of Cherokee. The
family stayed there for a few
years before moving to Ames,
where Gary graduated from the
Ames High School. He enlisted in
the Navy in October of 1962 and
after basic training served on
the USS Blue for three tours of
duty in Viet Nam. After being
discharged he spent some time
working in the logging camps in
the north west.
He relocated to Northwood with
his mother and sister after his
father passed away. He ran a gas
station for a few years, but
Gary's real love was welding. He
had a welding shop in London,
Minnesota for a few years, and
then worked in a welding shop in
Northwood for Herb Barber. Even
after he could no longer work
full time he liked puttering in
the yard and house.
He is survived by
his very special friend, Lynne
Schaub of Kensett; one sister,
Nancy Whitesell of Northwood;
and other aunts, uncles and
cousins in the area.

Ruth Emma Braun,
92, died on Saturday, December
20, 2003, at the Rosewood
Estates, Waterloo.
Funeral services were held on
Monday, December 22, at the
Trinity Lutheran Church in
Waterloo, with Rev. Norman
Stubbendick and Pastor Gary
Olson officiating. Interment was
in the Garden of Memories in
Waterloo.
Ruth Emma Braun,
was born in St. Ansgar on May
25, 1911, the daughter of Albert
and Selma (Grapp) Kirchgatter.
She was baptized in 1911 and
confirmed in 1926. Ruth was
raised and attended country
school in and around St. Ansgar.
She married Roy Braun on April
16, 1930. They moved quite often
early in their marriage and in
1946 they settled in the
community of Waterloo. Roy
preceded her in death on
September 23, 1976 and Ruth
continued to make her home in
Waterloo. For the past couple of
years, she had resided at the
Rosewood Estates. Ruth was
active in the ladies auxiliary
of the Local 1835 Union and was
also a past president.
Survivors include
a son, Marvin (Mary Lou) Braun
of Waterloo; two daughters,
Elaine (Paul) Myers of La Porte
City and Margaret (Bob) Hartman
of Waterloo; brother, Lloyd
Kirchgatter of Tracy,
California; sister, Doris Hanson
of Northwood; 14 grandchildren;
29 great-grandchildren; and 10
great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded
in death by her parents; her
husband; two brothers; a sister;
and a great-grandson.

Carlyle E. Greibrok, 81, of
rural Austin, died on Saturday,
December 20, 2003, at the St.
Johns Lutheran Home.
Funeral services
were held on Tuesday, at the
Faith Lutheran Church in London.
The Rev. Rueben Unseth
officiated and interment was in
the Hayward Cemetery.
Carlyle Erling
Greibrok, was born on March 17,
1922 in Woodworth, North Dakota,
the son of Aanon and Effie
(Nelson) Greibrok. He was
baptized by his father in
infancy and confirmed by Rev.
Nordaune. Carlyle attended
country school in rural
Glenville. On May 20, 1951, he
married Dorothy Kuhlmann at the
Bethany Lutheran Church in
Kensett. Carlyle farmed in the
Oakland and Austin vicinity. He
also had a business of
plastering new homes and
remodeling others. He helped
remodel the Deer Creek Valley
Lutheran Church and enjoyed
remodeling and adding on to his
home, which was originally built
in 1890.
Carlyle enjoyed
collecting toy tractors and
cars. This interest led him to
create the Greibrok Toy Museum.
He spent many hours creating an
imaginative farming wonderland.
Carlyle served on councils in
the churches he attended and
held church services in his home
for four years.

Nan Janice Martin

Nan
Janice Martin, 76, of Northwood,
was diagnosed with a blood
disease and for ten years
courageously fought the many
challenges of her health. With
dignity, she went home to be
with her Lord on Thursday,
December 25, 2003, at the Muse
Norris Hospice Inpatient unit in
Mason City.
A celebration of
Nan's life was held on Saturday,
at the First Lutheran Church in
Northwood, with Rev. Paul Holmer
officiating. Burial was in the
South Shell Rock Cemetery,
Northwood.
Nan was born at
her parents home west of
Northwood, to Otis and Geneva
(Knudtson) Nelson on May 8,
1927. She attended grade school
in Grove #3 and graduated from
the Northwood High School in
1945. She was confirmed at the
North Shell Rock Church on
April 27, 1941. She married Don
Martin on July 17, 1946 and
together they raised three
children, Nancy Hengesteg of
Northwood and Dan and Ron
Martin, both of Fort Collins,
Colorado. Nan worked for the
Extension Service, Worth County
Fair Board, Worth County
Selective Service, the County
Auditor, County Attorney, and 20
years in the office of Dr. Hal
Johnson, as well as many years
helping Don with his
construction business.
Nan was a long
time active member of the First
Lutheran Church in Northwood,
serving on the church council in
various offices, a member of
Judith Circle, teaching Sunday
School and singing in the choir,
volunteering in community
organizations such as Cub
Scouts, Brownies, the Viking
Manor Board, TUNE and school
functions. She received the
Citizen of the Year Award in
1990 and the TUNE Appreciation
Award in 2003. Nan enjoyed life!

a car-train accident on Friday,
December 26, 2003.
Funeral services were held on

in the Greenwood Cemetery,
Glenville.
Jan Ruth Ann
Jensen, was born on July 18,
1973 in Austin, the daughter of
Richard and Diane (Stiehl)
Jensen. She graduated from the
Northwood-Kensett High School in
1991. Jan was employed at
Farmstead, at the Jennie-O
Turkey Store and at the Albert
Lea Seed House. She was a member
of the Moose Lodge. Jan enjoyed
horses and rode with the Loco
Ropers.
She was an artist, enjoyed
hunting, fishing, camping,
baking and cooking. One of the
highlights of her life was the
trip she took to Kodiak, Alaska.
Jan loved telling jokes and was
well known for her sense of
humor. She had performed at the
Knuckleheads Comedy Club in the
Mall of America.
Survivors include
her son, Kent of Hartland; her
special friend, Ralph Thostenson
of Hartland; her mother, Diane
(Mrs. Kenneth) Nesset of
Northwood; father, Richard and

Dale Howard Attig

Dale Howard Attig, 84, died on
Saturday, December 27, 2003, at
the St. Mark’s Lutheran Home in
Austin.
Funeral services
were held on Wednesday, at the
Crane Community Chapel in
Austin, with Pastor Randy
Petersen officiating. Interment
was in the Woodbury Cemetery in
Lyle, Minnesota, with military
rites by the Lyle American
Legion Post #105.
Dale was born to
Adam and Olive (Eisenmann)
Attig, on March 16, 1919 at
Woden, Iowa. His mother died
when he was two years old and
his father moved to a farm south
of Albert Lea. In 1929, his
family moved south of Glenville
where Dale attended the
Riverside School and later the
Albert Lea High School. In April
1924, Dale entered the U.S. Army
serving as an infantryman with
the Thunderbird 45th Division,
Company G, 180th infantry. He
served under Generals Clark and
Patton. He was wounded twice and
was awarded the Purple Heart and
four Oak Leaf Clusters, Infantry
Combat Badge, Silver Star,
Bronze Star, the Distinguished
Service Medal, the American
Theater Campaign Medal, ETO
Campaign Medal, Good Conduct and
World War II Victory Medal. Dale
was proud to serve his country.
He also had two sons in the Air
Force during the Vietnam
Conflict and one in the Air
Force post Vietnam. Dale’s tour
of duty during World War II
included the Invasion of Sicily,
Anzio, Palermo and Salerno,
Italy and in France to the
German border. He was discharged
from the Army in 1945.
On September 7,
1946, he married Adella
Weisensel in Albert Lea. They
farmed south of London. He loved
the land, fed cattle and hogs,
raised corn, oats and hay. He
sadly retired in 1987 when he
was no longer able to continue,
but helped at planting and
harvesting time.

in the Brush Point Cemetery.
Betty Maxine, the
daughter of John and Grace
(Barrick) Kennedy, was born on
September 12, 1928 in Burchinal,
Iowa. She attended country
school near Burchinal. After her
schooling, she worked for the
Clear Lake Bakery. She married
Orain Hegney on April 1, 1961 in
Hanford, Iowa. She was a very
dedicated homemaker, who also
did a lot of babysitting for
many families.
Betty enjoyed dancing and bird
watching, but her favorite past
time was spending time with her
family. She was a member of the
Grace Lutheran Church of
Hanlontown, in which she was
very active, a member on the
Park Board for Hanlontown and
played an instrumental role in
revamping the park. She was also
a Girl Scout Leader.
Betty is survived
by her husband, Orain of
Hanlontown; her children,
Michael Kennedy and his wife,
Donna of Hanlontown, Cheryl
Tietjens and her husband, Roger
of Kensett, Julie Losee and her
husband, Kevin of Hanlontown and
Barbara Suby and special friend,

Jerry Fred
Ackerman, was born on October
22, 1957, in Mason City, the son
of Joe and Mabel (Magee)
Ackerman. He attended and
received his education in the
Mason City Public Schools. Jerry
moved to Northwood in 1972.
He enjoyed collecting antique
toy tractors, Coca-Cola
memorabilia, dice and carnival
glass. Jerry took special
interest in the Iowa lottery and
purchased tickets daily, and
watched his numbers faithfully.
He was also anxiously awaiting
the decision for a Worth County
Casino. Jerry was very concerned
with the various activities and
new businesses in Northwood and
enjoyed the new Dollar General
Store in Northwood.

L. Newgard, 90, of the Willow
Point Assisted Living, formerly
of Manly, died on Tuesday,
December 30, 2003, at the Good
Shepherd Care Center, Mason
City.
Funeral services were held on
Saturday, at the Bethlehem
Lutheran Church, Manly, with
Rev. Randy Nielsen officiating.
Burial was in the Memorial Park
Cemetery, Mason City.
Mildred, the
daughter of Frederick and Hannah
(Dahl) Hartz, was born on
February 27, 1913 in West Rock,
Minnesota. Upon the death of her
parents at the young age of 10,
she lived with relatives in
Minneapolis, Glasgow, Montana
and Chicago, Illinois. She was
confirmed in the Calvary
Lutheran Church at Minneapolis
and graduated from the Calumet
High School in Chicago. She was
introduced to her future
husband, Severt, by her sister,
Edna and Severt's brother,
Loren, who had married four
years prior. Severt and Mildred
were married in the Little Brown
Church at Nashua in 1935.
Mildred and Severt owned and
operated what is now known as
the Trading Post in
Gordonsville. They sold the
station in 1947 and bought a
farm near Gordonsville, which
they sold in 1950 and moved to
Manly. Mildred worked at several
local businesses and also for
the school district. She
volunteered at the Manly Care
Center and delivered Meals on
Wheels. She was very active
within the Bethlehem Lutheran
Church by teaching Sunday
School, being a member of the
Alter Guild and various circles.
Mildred is
survived by her children,
Marlene Freudenberg and husband,
Jack of Mason City, Don Newgard
and wife, Mary Ann of St.
Joseph, Missouri and Mary Ann
Peterson and husband, Dennis of
Maple Grove, Minnesota; seven
grandchildren;
great-grandchildren; one sister
and brother-in-law, Irene and
Vernis "Bun" Austin of Lakewood,
California; and many nieces,
nephews and her beloved dog,
Rajah.
Mildred was
preceded in death by her
parents; her husband, Severt;
one sister, Edna Newgard; and
two infant brothers.
