Henry "Hank"
William Bruggeman, 86, of rural
St. Ansgar, died on Monday,
March 3, 2003, at the Mitchell
County Regional Health Care
Center, Osage, Iowa.
Funeral services
were held on Saturday, at St.
Peter Lutheran Church,
Toeterville, Iowa, with Rev. Dr.
Elaine Siemsen and Rev. Barbara
Finley-Shea officiating. Burial
was in the St. Peter Lutheran
Cemetery, Toeterville. Military
rites were provided by the
Walter T. Enneberg Post No. 358
of the American Legion, St.
Ansgar.
Hank was born on
September 19, 1916 at St.
Ansgar, to William H. and Martha
(Glienke) Bruggeman. He farmed
all of his life, raising cattle,
sheep, hogs and horses. There
were always big gardens on the
farm. Hank enjoyed fishing,
especially for bullheads at
Morristown. He looked forward to
holidays and birthdays, as well
as the St. Peter Lutheran fish
fry. Hank enjoyed spoiling and
spending time with the
grandchildren.
Hank was preceded
in death by his parents;
brother, Ernest; and sister,
Alma.
Survivors include
his grandchildren, Renae and
Duane Henaman, Zebadiah Henaman,
Zacharian and Cathy Henaman,
Heather and Willi Clennon;
great-grandchildren, Chelsea,
Logan, Ashley and Taylor;
special friends, Nick Tolan,
Harm and Lola Loverink, Dean
Duenow, Lawrence Bruggeman, Jr.,
Robert Gleason, Karla Schaefer,
Glen Buntrock and Dean Buntrock.

Donald Crapser

Donald Crapser,
71, of Des Moines, died of
pancreatic cancer at home on
Monday, March 3, 2003. The body
was cremated with memorial
services to be held at a later
date.
Donald was born
in Mason City. He lived in
Northwood and graduated from the
Northwood High School in 1949.
He also lived in New Hampton and
Boone before moving to Des
Moines in 1969. Donald worked
for the State of Iowa before
retiring. He was a Marine
veteran of the Korean War and a
member of the VFW, American
Legion and Disabled American
Veterans.
Survivors include
his wife Murna; two sons; three
daughters; a sister, Lois in
California; 10 grandchildren;
four great-grandchildren; and
four step-grandchildren.

Amanda Thoe

Amanda
Thoe, 82, of Magalia,
California, died on Thursday,
March 6, 2003, from
complications of a long battle
against the ravages of
Alzheimer's Disease at Paradise,
California.
A memorial
service in celebration of her
life will be held at the
Paradise Lutheran Church,
Paradise, California, at 1:00
p.m., on Saturday, March 15,
2003.
She was born on
her parent's family farm in
Worth County, Iowa on February
23, 1921, to Ole and Anne Haugo,
the ninth of ten children. She
was baptized and confirmed in
the Lutheran faith in which she
had great strength throughout
her life. She was active in
serving in the many churches to
which she belonged including
singing in choirs for over 65
years. She graduated from the
Lake Mills High School, Lake
Mills, Iowa, with the class of
1940 followed with a year at
Luther College, Decorah, Iowa,
before attending the Grant
Hospital School of Nursing,
Chicago, Illinois, where she
graduated in 1943 and became a
registered nurse. She married
Robert Thoe on June 9, 1943 at
Annapolis, Maryland. As a Navy
wife, she took what became a
permanent sabbatical leave from
professional nursing after
bearing her first child in 1945
to become a full time mother of
her four children and homemaker
for her naval officer husband
and family. This led her to call
her home in places of Iowa,
Florida, Maryland, Virginia,
Connecticut, Minnesota,
California, Texas, Republic of
Panama and Bermuda, British West
Indies.
She was well
known for her sense of humor,
cooking and entertaining skills,
and loving care for those in
need. She was a workaholic and
especially loved gardening and
landscaping. She particularly
enjoyed studying the Bible,
collecting early American
antiques, reciting poetry,
playing bridge, golf, and
braiding wool rugs through which
she won blue ribbons for
creative art at local fairs. Her
priorities were God, family, and
people.
She was preceded
in death by three brothers,
Torjus Haugo of Lake Mills, Ted
Haugo of Lake Mills and Harold
Haugo of Kasson, Minnesota; four
sisters, Amanda Haugo of Lake
Mills, Ruth Vail of
Lawrenceburg, Indiana, Thora
Harmon Larson of Tacoma,
Washington and Agnes Douglas of
Lake Mills; and grandson,
Augustus Amandus Thoe of
Stamsund, Norway.
Survivors include
her husband of 59 years, Bob of
Magalia, California; three sons,
Bob and wife, Betty of
Livermore, California, Scott and
wife, Vebjorg of Stamsund,
Norway and John and wife, Nan
Drake of Seattle, Washington;
daughter, Annie Thoe of Seattle,
Washington; a sister, Rachel
Brunsvold and her husband,
Eldren of Kensett, Iowa; a
brother, Walter Haugo and his
wife, Mary Jo of Litchfield,
Minnesota; four grandchildren;
and one great-granddaughter.
Memorial
contributions may be made to the
Endowment Fund at Paradise
Lutheran Church, Paradise,
California or to the Alzheimer's
Association, Paradise,
California.
Inurnment of her
ashes are being held to be mixed
with those of her husband upon
his death with disposition to be
decided at that time.

Wendell Wayne
Watts, 81, of Northwood, Iowa,
died on Friday, March 7, 2003,
at the Muse Norris Hospice
Inpatient Unit, Mason City,
Iowa.
Funeral services
were held on Tuesday, at the
First Lutheran Church,
Northwood, with Rev. Paul Holmer
and Captain Jon Fredrickson
officiating. Burial was in the
Sunset Rest Cemetery, Northwood.
The Schroeder & Sites Funeral
Home, Northwood, was in charge
of the arrangements. According
to Wendell's wishes his body
will be cremated after the
visitation.
Wendell was born
on May 3, 1921 in Marathon,
Iowa, to Thomas Homer and
Lavaida (Holmes) Watts. He was
baptized in the Baptist Church
in Northwood and confirmed by
Pastor Mickelson at the Lutheran
Parsonage. He graduated from the
Northwood High School. Wendell
married Alice Fredrickson on
September 27, 1942 at the First
Lutheran Church, Northwood, by
Pastor Arthur Tolo. Wendell went
to California to work in a
defense plant after they were
married. He then worked in the
post office, next worked for the
railroad, then 25 years as a
plumber for Sherwin Falk, then
Watts Plumbing and Heating,
after that Viking Sheet Metal,
next was Worth County
Supervisor, and then drove the
Worth County Transit Van.
Wendell was a
volunteer fireman for Northwood
from 1947-1970. He was also a
Boy Scout Leader. Wendell loved
fishing, the University of
Northwood "The Corner Post",
spending time with family and
all his grandkids and
great-grandchildren. Wendell
really enjoyed crafting fishing
lures, watching sporting events,
especially Iowa Basketball,
Vikings and NASCAR.
He was preceded
in death by his parents; and one
sister, Doril.
Wendell is
survived by his wife, Alice of
Northwood; two sons, Jim Watts
and wife, Chen of Sterling,
Alaska and Tom Watts and wife,
Joan of Northwood; two
daughters, Kandie and husband,
Ron Shupe of Northwood and Wendy
and husband, Roger Urbatch of
Woodbridge, Virginia; niece,
Jann Ramus and husband, John of
St. Paul, Minnesota;
grandchildren, Sue Lynn, Dan

M. Hanson, 91, of Lake Mills,
Iowa, died on Sunday, March 9,
2003, at the Lake Mills Care
Center in Lake Mills, Iowa.
Funeral services
were held on Thursday, at the
Lake Mills Evangelical Synod
Church, with Rev. Karl Hermanson
officiating. Burial was in the
Somber Lutheran Cemetery in
rural Lake Mills.
Avanel Margarit
Hanson, was born on April 19,
1911 in Worth County, Silver
Lake Township, Iowa, the
daughter of Martin and Anna
(Holstad) Harmon. On February
19, 1939, she was married to
Sven R. Hanson. To this union
two children were born, Marilyn
and Steven. Duaine Harmon, a
nephew, became a brother and son
to the family in 1946.
Avanel enjoyed
needle works and playing cards,
crafts, gardening and being wife
and mom. She was an active
member of the Somber Lutheran
Church and served on various
committees. She worked at
Fleetguard in Lake Mills for 13
years.
Avanel is
survived by her loving husband,
Sven Hanson of Lake Mills; three
children, Marilyn and her
husband, James Brosdahl of
Parkersburg, Iowa, Steven and
his wife, Sandy Hanson of Byers,
Colorado and Duaine and his
wife, Ellyn Harmon of Lake
Mills; five grandchildren; 11
great-grandchildren; two
brothers, Elmer D. Harmon of
Lake Mills and Marvin and his
wife, Hazel Harmon of Phoenix,
Arizona: sister-in-law, Evelyn
Muir of Harlowton, Montana;

C. Seidel, 84, of Hanlontown,
Iowa, died on Thursday, March
13, 2003, at the Mercy Medical
Center-North Iowa in Mason City.
Funeral services
were held on Monday, at the
Grace Lutheran Church in
Hanlontown, with Pastor Paul
Nelson officiating. Burial was
in the Brush Point Cemetery in
Hanlontown.
Frank Carroll
Seidel, was born on July 1, 1918
in Cerro Gordo County, Iowa, the
son of Charles and Maud (Wood)
Seidel. He graduated from high
school in Hanlontown. On June 4,
1940, he married Mavis Domholdt.
They lived and farmed near
Hanlontown for 61 years. They
enjoyed farming, ballroom and
square dancing.
Frank is survived
by his loving wife, Mavis of
Hanlontown; four children, Arlyn
and his wife, Mary Ann Seidel of
New Kirk, Oklahoma, Carolyn and
her husband, Leonard Berghoeffer
of Hampton, Dennis and his wife,
Karen Seidel of Sturgis, South
Dakota and Diane and her
husband, Lee Chapa of Eden
Prairie, Minnesota; 11
grandchildren; 20
great-grandchildren; and four
great-great-grandchildren; one

Ileen Ruth (Gaarder) Torvik

Ileen Ruth
(Gaarder) Torvik died on
Thursday, March 13, 2003, at her
home in Decorah at the age of
76, of cancer.
Ileen was born on
August 15, 1926, to Hilmen Otto
and Inga Adelia (Tenold) Gaarder
in Kensett, Iowa. She was
baptized at the First Lutheran
Church in Northwood in September
of 1926. She graduated from the
Kensett High School with the
class of 1944 and went on to
earn her B.A. in Education at
Luther College in 1948. She
married James R. Torvik on
December 28, 1948 at the First
Lutheran Church in Northwood. To
this union three sons and one
daughter were born, Stephen,
Jay, Ross and Randeen.
Ileen was a high
school teacher in Sherburn,
Minnesota (from 1948 to 1949),
Spring Grove, Minnesota (from
1962 to 1965), and Calmar, Iowa
(from 1965 to 1989) where she
taught P.E. at the South
Winneshiek High School and was
the girl's golf coach and
cheerleader advisor. She
belonged to the First Lutheran
Church in Decorah, the
Silvercrest Golf & Country Club
and the American Legion
Auxiliary. She was also an avid
supporter of the Decorah Swim
Team.
She was preceded
in death by her parents; and her
husband, James on March 14,
1987.
She is survived
by her son, Stephen of Columbus,
Ohio and his children, Ryan,
Nathaniel and Nicholas; her son,
Jay (and his special friend,
Beth Bergman) of Decorah; her
son, Ross (Karen) of Columbus,
Ohio and their children, Alia
and Benjamin; her daughter,
Randeen Torvik (Frank) Ragan of
Austin, Texas; her committed
partner and best friend, Jerry
Bernatz of Decorah; her brother,
Hoyt (Thelma) Gaarder of Sibley,
Iowa; her brother, Donald

Boneta L.
Pederson, was born on February
7, 1926, to Harry A. and Agnes
(Mangen) Young in Austin,
Minnesota. She married Olaf
Pederson on October 22, 1944 in
Austin, Minnesota. They were
married during World War II and
during the war, Boneta worked in
a defense plant in the Twin
Cities. After Olaf returned from
the Navy, they farmed on the
family farm near Carpenter.
Boneta's love was for her Lord
and Savior and her family. She
crocheted afghans and enjoyed
baking and cooking and being a
country wife.
She was preceded
in death by her parents; a
brother; and daughter, Beverly.
Boneta is
survived by her husband, Olaf of
Carpenter; four sons, Donald and

Noreen Whitcome, 92, of
Northwood, died on Monday, March
17, 2003, at the Lutheran
Retirement Home in Northwood.
Funeral services
were held on Thursday, at the
First Lutheran Church,
Northwood, with Rev. Paul Holmer
officiating. Burial was in the
Sunset Rest Cemetery in
Northwood. The Conner Colonial
Chapel, Northwood, was in charge
of the arrangements.
Alice Noreen
Whitcome, was born on February
8, 1911, in rural Worth County
near Northwood, the daughter of
Charles and Ida (Anderson)
Anderson. She was baptized on
March 12, 1911 and reaffirmed
the faith of her baptism through
confirmation in the Lutheran
faith on May 11, 1924. She
attended and received her
education in the Northwood
School System, graduating from
the Northwood High School. She
married Ellsworth Whitcome in
1929, in Albert Lea, Minnesota.
He preceded her in death in May
1951. After their marriage they
moved to Toledo, Ohio and also
lived in Ft. Wayne, Indiana,
Northwood and Manchester, Iowa
and Grand Island, Nebraska,
before moving to Blooming
Prairie, Minnesota, where they
owned and operated a hotel and
restaurant before moving back to
Northwood where Alice worked as
a secretary for many years for
the Northwood Community Schools
until her retirement.
She enjoyed
bingo, fishing, bridge, and was
an excellent seamstress, but her
great love and enjoyment was her
family and grandchildren. Alice
loved her church and was a very
active member of the First
Lutheran Church in Northwood,
was a former member of the
Stewardship Committee at First
Lutheran Church and belonged to
and was Worthy Matron of the
Eastern Star in Northwood.
Left to cherish
her memory are her children,
Roger Whitcome and his wife,
Lola of Grundy Center, Iowa,
Charles Whitcome and Carol of
International Falls, Minnesota
and Ruth (Whitcome) Zamora of
New Orleans, Louisiana; five

Doris E. Steiger

Doris
E. Steiger, 87, of Mason City,
formerly of Kensett, died on
Wednesday, March 19, 2003, at
the Muse Norris Hospice
Inpatient Unit, Mason City.
Her funeral
service was on Saturday, at the
Bolan United Methodist Church,
with Rev. Robert Cumings
officiating. Interment followed
in the Sunset Rest Cemetery,
Northwood.
Doris was born on
May 22, 1915, to Lewis C. and
Louise (Stehn) Kenison and was
baptized on September 19, 1915
at her family home. She attended
rural schools near Kensett and
graduated from the Kensett High
School in 1933 as the
Valedictorian of her class. She
then graduated from Iowa State
Teacher's College in Cedar Falls
with a teaching degree and a
principal's certificate. She
taught school in rural Kensett
and in Carpenter following her
graduation. Doris married
Glennis H. Steiger on August 31,
1943 at the Bethel Evangelical
Church in Manly. They farmed for
17 years on the Steiger farm in
Bolan before moving to the
Kenison farm east of Kensett,
where Doris dearly loved to be.
Doris was very
active in her community as a 4-H
Leader, a member of the Worth
County Historical Society and
the Kensett Senior Citizens, a
member of the Election Board for
Kensett Township for over 20
years, and a Bolan news
correspondent for 25 years. She
also was a member of the Worth
County Cancer Society Board,
receiving an award for 35 years
of service. Doris loved music,
playing the flute from high
school band to college orchestra
and also singing in the Worth
County Chorus. Her faith and her
church were important to Doris
and she held various offices in
the UMW, was a member of the
church choir, taught Sunday
School for many years, and
assisted her husband as church
treasurer for 50 years. The
Bolan United Methodist Church
family was very special to her
and will miss her dearly.
Doris was an
excellent homemaker, baker, and
seamstress. Many family members
and friends received gifts of
her handiwork, especially her
lovely baby quilts. With her
gentle, patient nature, she was
always doing things for others
and taking loving care of her
family, especially at the time
of her daughter's death.
Doris will be
greatly missed by her daughter,
Mary Ann and her husband, Steven
E. Wendt of Mason City; four
grandchildren, Sarah
Meyer-Reyerson and her husband,
Jason of Shell Rock, Carrie
Meyer of Osage and her fiancée,
Nick Sparrow of Manly, Thomas R.
Meyer of Kensett and Alyssa
Wendt of Mason City; two
great-grandchildren, Grace
Reyerson and Thomas Krebsbach; a
son-in-law, Thomas E. Meyer of
Clear Lake; and several nieces,
nephews, cousins and many
friends who were all very
special to her.
She was preceded
in death by her parents; her
husband, Glennis in October
2000; a daughter, Catherine
Louise Meyer in August 1984; a
brother, Keith Kenison; and
several sisters-in-law and
brothers-in-law.

2003, at the Lutheran Retirement
Home in Northwood.
Memorial services

Wednesday, March 26, at the Our
Saviour's Lutheran Church, Mason
City, with Rev. Joel Dahlen
officiating. Visitation will be
one hour prior to the service
time on Wednesday at the church.
The family of Dorothy Marie
Johnson has requested that
memorial contributions be made
to the Our Saviour's Lutheran
Church in Mason City. According
to her wishes her body was

Dorothy Marie
Johnson, was born on November 2,
1916 in Woodward, Iowa, the
daughter of Carl and Marie
(Seeman) Mohr. She attended and
received her education in the
rural Brookfield #9 School
System. After completing her
schooling she worked in homes
for various families in the
north Iowa area. She married
Dwayne Johnson on April 19, 1937
in Mason City. After their
marriage, Dorothy enjoyed
staying at home where she loved
and cared for her family. In
1965, Dorothy worked as a cook
for the Columbia Ward Fishery
Cannery in Kenai, Alaska until
1980. The family also lived in
Everett, Washington for 22
years.
Dorothy loved and
was very active and involved in
all the churches in the
communities where they lived,
and at the Our Saviour's
Lutheran Church in Mason City.
She also enjoyed sewing,
painting, gardening and
traveling throughout the United
States and internationally, but
her great love and enjoyment was
her family and many friends.
Left to cherish
her memory is her husband,

Unit or Memorials of your

William H. "Bill"
Wolff, was born on November 14,
1930, to William H. and Linda M.
Luth Wolff on his father's farm
in Grove Township, Worth County.
He was baptized on December 14,
1930 by Rev. Kraemer and
confirmed July 1, 1945 by Pastor
William Tiede at the Zion
Lutheran Church, Northwood. He
married Ellen Engelby on June
17, 1950 at Zion Lutheran by
Pastor Otto C. Staehling. Bill
attended the Grove #4 Grade
School and then stayed home to
work on the farm with his
father. Bill worked at the
Maynard Jaspers Implement, Pat's
Super Service and Leo Dralla
Construction of Northwood. He
owned his own auto salvage
service. He later worked at
Pangburn Distributing, L. R.
Falk Construction, Randall
Transit Mix and Northwood
Motors. Bill's long battle with
cancer began in the spring of
1990.
In the later
years he enjoyed metal
detection, going to auctions,
doing woodworking and making
furniture for Ellen and the
girls, and rebuilding old
furniture. He enjoyed spending
time at the Cornerpost having
coffee with friends. He was a
long time member of AA, and was
very proud of his 26 years of
sobriety. He dearly loved the
time he could spend with his
grandchildren and the special
time spent with his five
daughters and his special
friend, Katelyn Jaspers. Bill
wrote, "Ellen and the girls were
always there for me when days
were bad." Bill will be
remembered for his determination
and very unique sense of humor.
Bill is survived
by his wife, Ellen; daughters
and sons-in law, Connie and Ken
Estes of Northwood, Margie and
Van Butler of Kensett, Lori and
Duane Weisert of Sumner, Mary
and Paul Allison of Blooming
Prairie, Minnesota and Barb and
Dean Morgan of Janesville,
Minnesota; grandchildren,
Christopher, Carrie and Amber
Estes, Jesse, Janet and Scott
Butler, Katie, Dan and Bill
Weisert, Tyler and Emily Allison
and Sam and Isaac Morgan; his
sisters, Margie Davis and Evy
Hanson; and many nieces and
nephews.
He was preceded
in death by his parents;
sisters, Gladys Wolff and Ellen
Buehrer; and brothers-in-law,
Curtis Davis and Eldon Buehrer.

Selma (Olson) Estes
April 1, 2003
Selma
(Olson) Estes, 95, of Northwood,
died on Wednesday, March 26,
2003, at the Lutheran Retirement
Home in Northwood.
Funeral services
were held on Monday, at the
First Lutheran Church in
Northwood, with Rev. Paul Holmer
officiating. Burial was in the
Sunset Rest Cemetery. The
Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home,
Northwood, was in charge of the
arrangements.
Selma was born on
a farm north of Northwood, on
June 2, 1907 to Carl G. and Ida
Iverson Olson. She was baptized
on August 3, 1907 at the Trinity
Norwegian Lutheran Church and
confirmed on May 21, 1922 at the
Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Selma and her brother, Clifford
were stricken with polio in
1910. She was crippled by the
disease. She married William G.
Estes on December 20, 1927. They
were married 58 years at the
time of his death in 1985.
She was preceded
in death by her husband;
parents; three sons, Clifton,
Lloyd and Gilman; one grandson,
Richard; sister, Gunda; and one
brother, Clifford.
Survivors include
one daughter, Sylvia Peterson
and her husband, Merle of
Hanlontown; three sons, Wayne
Estes and his wife, Dorothy of
Northwood, Sheldon Estes of
Northwood and Harold Estes and
his wife, Kathy of Forest City;
one niece, Marilyn Ulve; seven
grandchildren; and 15
great-grandchildren.

Truman Duane Hengesteg

Truman
Duane Hengesteg, 71, son of
Elmer and Sophie (Sandman)
Hengesteg, of rural Northwood,
died on Thursday, March 27,
2003, at the Muse-Norris Hospice
Inpatient Unit in Mason City,
after a yearlong battle with
cancer.
Memorial services
were held on Monday, at the
Silver Lake Lutheran Church,
rural Northwood, with Rev. Allan
Stoa officiating. Inurnment will
be in the Silver Lake Lutheran
Church Cemetery, with military
honors by the "Our Buddies VFW
Memorial Post #6779" of
Northwood. According to his
wishes and the wishes of his
family his body was cremated.
The Conner Colonial Chapel,
Northwood, was in charge of the
arrangements.
Truman Duane
Hengesteg, was born on November
15, 1931, and raised on the farm
in Hartland Township near
Northwood, that his
great-grandparents purchased in
1858, the son of Elmer and
Sophie (Sandman) Hengesteg. He
was baptized and reaffirmed the
faith of his baptism through
confirmation in the Silver Lake
Lutheran Church, rural
Northwood. He attended and
received his education in the
Northwood-Kensett Community
School System, graduating from
the Northwood-Kensett High
School in 1949. Truman was
inducted into the U.S. Army on
February 12, 1952 in Des Moines
and served overseas in the
Korean Conflict with the
Headquarters Company, 1st
Battalion, 279th Infantry. He
received various medals,
including the Korean Service
Medal with three Bronze Service
Stars, Combat Infantry Badge,
two overseas United Nations
Service Medals, Good Conduct
Medal, National Defense Service
Medal and the Bronze Star Medal.
Truman was honorably discharged
as a Sergeant on February 11,
1954.
After his
honorable discharge he returned
to the Northwood area and farmed
all his life. Truman was awarded
"Out Standing Young Farmer" by
the Northwood Chamber of
Commerce. He married JoAnn Sharp
on February 20, 1954. After
their marriage Truman and JoAnn
and their three children, Cinda,
David and Sue kept busy with
farming, church, school and 4-H
activities until JoAnn's death
in 1971. He married Bonnie
(Herman) Sandberg on August 13,
1973, in Glenville, Minnesota.
Truman was a life
long member of the Silver Lake
Lutheran Church, serving on the
church council. He was a member
of the "Our Buddies VFW Memorial
Post #6779" of Northwood, Elks
Lodge #813 in Albert Lea,
Minnesota and was on the Board
of Directors at the Northwood
State Bank.
Left to cherish
his memory is his wife, Bonnie
Hengesteg; three children and
their families, Cinda Rustad and
her daughters, Kelly, Angie and
Hailee, David Hengesteg and his
wife, Sue and their children,
Courtney and Matt and Sue
Johnson and her husband, Claude
and their daughters, Lauren and
Kasey; two step-children, David
Sandberg and his wife, Mary and
their children, Matt, Brianna,
Lynn, Derreck and Shelly Kozak
and her husband, Tony; and Tom
Sandberg and his wife, Marianne
and their children, Dan and
Steven; a brother, Rodney; four
sisters-in-law, Mary Jaspers,
Leona Herman, Dorothy Martin and
her husband, Jack and Bonny
Nelson and her husband, George;
and many nieces, nephews as well
as other relatives and many
friends.
He was preceded
in death by his parents, Elmer
and Sophie Hengesteg; and his
wife, JoAnn.

Janis E. Reeder,
70, of rural Albert Lea, died on
Friday, March 28, 2003, at
Thorne Crest North.
Funeral services
were held on Monday, at the
Round Prairie Lutheran church.
Rev. Tammy Dahlvang officiated
with interment in the Greenwood
Cemetery, Glenville.
Janis Eileen
Reeder, was born on October 23,
1932, to Edgar and Audres V.
(Waage) Bachtle in Des Moines.
The family moved to Albert Lea
where Janis attended and
graduated from the Albert Lea
High School in 1950. On June 6,
1950, Janis married Stephen N.
Reeder at the First Lutheran
Church in Albert Lea.
She enjoyed
bowling, fishing, sewing and
crafting, cooking and baking and
was involved in many church
activities. Janis especially
enjoyed time spent with her
family and friends.
Survivors include
daughters, Sheryl and husband,
Mick Delger, Debra Reeder, LeAnn
and husband, Steven Anderson,
Nancy and husband, Robert
Knutson and Catherine "Cathy"
Reeder; son, Richard "Dick" and
wife, Brenda Reeder; 10
grandchildren; five
great-grandchildren; sister,
Darlene and husband, Arnold
Anderson; brothers, Arliss and
wife, Maxine Bachtle, Gary and

Gladys Sophine Hendrikson

Gladys Sophine
Hendrikson, 92, of Anaheim,
California, died on Friday,
March 28, 2003, at the Walnut
Manor Lutheran Home, Anaheim,
California.
Funeral services
were held on Wednesday, at the
Walnut Manor, with Rev. Patricia
Nordstrand and Rev. Mark
Wikstorm officiating. Burial was
in the Green Hills Memorial
Park, Rancho Palo Verdes,
California.
Gladys S. Nelson,
was born to parents Alvilde and
John Nelson in Starbuck,
Minnesota. She was baptized and
confirmed at the Inherred
Lutheran Church in Starbuck. She
graduated from high school in
1929 and moved to Minneapolis,
where she worked at the Swedish
Hospital. Gladys then worked at
a hospital in San Francisco,
California. She subsequently
worked for a tire company and
Van de Kamp Bakery. In 1947, she
married John Hendrikson and in
the same year became the church
organist at the Bethel Lutheran
Church in north Long Beach,
where she served faithfully for
more than 30 years. Although she
had no children of her own, she
raised her nieces, Eileen and
Helen, as her own.
She loved her
music as well as gardening,
always having fresh flowers in
her home. Gladys loved to
entertain her family and many
friends. In the later years her
grandchildren and
great-grandchildren were the joy
of her life. After suffering a
stroke in 1999 from which she
recovered, she came to reside at
Walnut Manor and there enjoyed
the gardens and many friends.
She was a member of the Trinity
Lutheran Church, Norwalk,
California.
She is survived
by nieces, Eileen (Wendell)
Orien and family of Long Beach,
California and Helen (Mark)
Wikstrom and family of Selma,
California; sister, Amy Nelson
of Felton, California;
sister-in-law, Jean Nelson of

Brant R. Loberg

Brant R. Loberg,
died on Sunday, March 30, 2003,
at his home in Waterloo, Iowa,
from a heart attack.
Memorial services
were held on Thursday, at Cedar
Falls, with Rev. Jeffrey
Whillock officiating. Burial was
in Northwood, with Rev. Paul
Holmer officiating.
He was born on
August 21, 1943, the son of
Ingvald and Flavia (Hill) Loberg.
He married Jeanne Nelson in 1963
at Mason City. They later
divorced. Brant and Jeanne had
one son, Ryan.
Survivors include
his son, Ryan and wife, Holly of
Butler, Pennsylvania; his
mother, Flavia Loberg of Cedar
Falls; two sisters, Julie Hill
of Waterloo and Angela Burrell
and husband of Cedar Falls; a
niece; two aunts, Lyta Reyerson
of Northwood and Thera Johnson
of Alamo, Texas; and cousins.
He was preceded
in death by his father.
