Russell Edward Schaub

May 13, 2009

Russell Edward Schaub, an executive at the Westfield Insurance Company for 17 years until his retirement in 1999, died suddenly on Saturday, May 3, 2003, of an aortic aneurysm. He was 70 years old.

Funeral service was at the Leroy United Methodist Church in Westfield Center on Thursday, May 8.

He was born on July 20, 1932 in Northwood, Iowa, to Margaret and Earl Schaub. He was a farm boy who was active in 4-H and excelled as both a student and an athlete. As the recipient of a Danforth Scholarship in 1950, he attended Iowa Wesleyan University, where he lettered in three varsity sports (baseball, football, and basketball) and was an officeholder in his fraternity, Lambda Chi Alpha and a Blue Key member. He graduated in 1954.

He married Joan Lou Helgeson of Kensett, on December 19, 1954. After Russ completed a brief stint in the Army, they began their lives together as schoolteachers. Russ taught high school mathematics from 1955-59. When he received a National Science Foundation Scholarship in 1959-60, they moved to Minneapolis where Russ began a year of post-graduate work at the University of Minnesota. A first daughter, Diana Jo was born on July 7, 1959, and a second, Kathleen Ann on February 22, 1962. Russ entered the corporate world in 1960, serving in data processing, research, and managerial positions at companies in Minneapolis and Celina, Ohio, before moving with Joan to Westfield Center in 1982.

He was a member of a number of professional associations and the recipient of a Chamber of Commerce Boss of the Year Award in 1972. Russ was a member of the Leroy United Methodist Church, a lifelong Republican, and a public-spirited citizen. He had served as President of the Board of Public Affairs in Westfield Center since 1988. Russ was an avid gardener who happily hauled load after load of mulch and rock, and climbed tall trees chainsaw in hand. He and Joan were always involved in one or more home improvement projects. Carpentry, plumbing and electrical work-he did it. In recent years, he had tackled projects at his daughters' houses in Connecticut and Baltimore as well.

In his spare time, he read widely in history, biography and the genre of Western fiction, especially the novels of Louis L'Amour (of which he had a complete collection). He and Joan traveled extensively throughout the United States and Canada. They also made trips to Japan, Brazil, Australia and Europe. In the past year, he had founded a men's bridge club and was looking forward to many pleasant gatherings.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Joan Lou Schaub; his daughter, Diana Schaub; his daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Stephen Rudolph; his mother, Margaret Schaub; his sister, Ruth (Robb); and his brothers, Kenneth and James.
