Scott Harvey Patterson

Scott Harvey Patterson, of
Kensett, Iowa, 40, died on
Monday January 3, 2011, at his
home.
A funeral service
was held at 11:00 a.m., on
Friday, January 7, at the First
Lutheran Church, Northwood, with
Pastor Tom Martin officiating.
Burial was in the Kensett
Cemetery. Visitation was from
4-8:00 p.m., on Thursday, at the
Conner Colonial Chapel,
Northwood. Visitation was also
held one hour prior to the
service time on Friday at the
church.
Scott was born on
June 4, 1970 at Mercy Hospital,
Mason City, to Harvey and Carol
(Pedersen) Patterson. He
graduated from the
Northwood-Kensett High School in
May of 1989 and attended Iowa
State University. He worked for
Fleetgaard in Lake Mills, Iowa,
for 12 years and was currently
employed at Winnebago
Industries. He was united in
marriage on May 22, 1999, to
Tammy Bergdale, the love of his
life and soul mate. On that day
he became the proud father to
Jessie and Nicole. He was
baptized and confirmed at the
United Methodist Church in
Northwood.
He was an avid
fisherman who loved boating and
spending time with family and
friends. He also loved his four
legged friends. Scott was a very
avid Dallas Cowboy fan. His
favorite saying was, “It’s All
Good.”

his memory are his wife, Tammy
Patterson; son, Jessie Leidal;
daughter, Nicole Leidal, and her
special friend, Zach Jones;

nephew, Tony (Sunny) Kindschuch;

He was preceded
in death by his grandparents,
Leroy and Evadna Pedersen;
grandfather, Robert Patterson;
brothers-in-law, Kim Kindschuh
and Dennis Wagner; and nephews,
Nathan and Dustin Wagner.

Jeff Odom
January 12, 2011
Jeff Odom, 52, of Northwood,
died on Monday, January 3, 2011,
at his home in Northwood.
Funeral services
were held at 1:00 p.m., on
Saturday, January 8, at the
First Lutheran Church,
Northwood, with Rev. Daniel Hart
and Rev. Barbara Wills
officiating. Burial was in the
Pilot Knob Cemetery, rural
Forest City. Visitation was held
after 11:00 a.m., on Saturday
morning at the church.
Jeff Odom was
born on October 16, 1958, to
James and Marilyn (Pederson)
Odom in Forest City, Iowa. He
was a man of very strong faith,
a loving father and liked to
garden.
He was preceded
in death by his parents;
daughter, Carrissa; and two
brothers, Thomas and Timothy.
Jeff is survived
by his daughters, Sarah Renee
and Amy Lynn Odom of Northwood;
brothers, Mike (Stella) Odom of
Manly and Doug Odom; one sister,
Lori Odom of Kensett; and uncle,
Mike Odom.

Funeral Home, Northwood, was in
charge of the arrangements.

Glenn C. Johnson
February 23, 2011
Glenn C. Johnson, 93, born on
January 8, 1918, died on Sunday,
January 16, 2011.
Memorial services
were held on Wednesday, January
19, at 3:00 p.m., at the
Summerwood Presbyterian Home in
Plymouth, Minnesota. A private
graveside service, with full
military honors was held at the
Ft. Snelling National Cemetery.
Glen was born and
raised on a family farm near
Northwood, Iowa. After college
he taught school in Iowa until
joining the Veterans
Administration. He enlisted in
the Navy in WW II and after the
war returned to the Veterans
Administration, where he
concluded a 37 year career as a
national head of Veterans
Insurance.
Glenn is survived
by five children; 14
grandchildren; and 22
great-grandchildren.
He was preceded
in death by his wife, Thera
(Hill), after 67 years of
marriage; his infant son;
grandson and son-in-law;
parents; and a brother, Arnold
and his wife.

Zora Crane
February 2, 2011
Zora Crane, age 96, of
Northwood, was called home on
Saturday, January 29, 2011, from
the Hospice of North Iowa in
Mason City.
Funeral services
will be held at 1:30 p.m., on
Thursday, February 3, at the
First Lutheran Church in
Glenville. Rev. Barbara Wills
will officiate. Interment will
be in the Hillcrest Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5-8:00
p.m., on Wednesday, February 2,
at the Bayview/Freeborn Funeral
Home and one hour prior to the
service at the church.
Zora Crane, was
born on May 26, 1914, to
Priscilla (Brown) and John
Hargis in Ida Grove, Iowa. In
1925, the family moved to
Freeborn County. On October 20,
1933, Zora was united in
marriage to Giles Crane in Mason
City, Iowa. Zora helped start
the cafeterias in the Glenville,
Gordonsville and Myrtle Schools.
She ran the Glenville Café and
worked at Carroll-George,
Northwood, as well as working
alongside her husband in their
Bag business.
She was a member
of the First Lutheran Church in
Northwood. Zora enjoyed fishing,
camping, sewing, embroidery,
crocheting and most of all she
enjoyed everyone and every
minute of her 96 years of life.
Survivors include
her children, Robert (Carol)
Crane of Johnston, Iowa and Judy
(Ron) Wangen of Northwood;
daughters-in-law, Maxine of
Albany, New York and Patricia of
Maple Grove, Minnesota; 12
grandchildren; 19
great-grandchildren; brother,
George (Beverly) Hargis; sister,
Betty Athey; sisters-in-law,
Doris and Marlene Hargis and
Mildred Behsman; and many
nieces, nephews and extended
family.
Zora was preceded
in death by her parents;
husband, Giles; two sons, LaDon
and Richard; granddaughter,
Elizabeth Ann; siblings, Mable,
Dwaine, John Jr., Irene and
Roger and in-laws, James, Alex
and Mary Elizabeth.

Mary Ellen Orth
February 9, 2011
Mary Ellen Orth, 86, of Ventura,
died on Sunday, January 30,
2011, at a vacation resort in
Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
Services will be
held on Saturday, February 12,
at 10:00 a.m., at the United
Methodist Church in Northwood,
with Pastor Wendi Gillan
officiating. Burial will take
place in the Sunset Rest
Cemetery at a future time. A
visitation with family present
will take place at the Conner
Colonial Chapel, in Northwood,
from 6-8:00 p.m., on Friday,
February 11. In lieu of flowers
the family request memorials be
directed to the Camp Tanglefoot
Girl Scout Camp in Clear Lake or
to the United Methodist Church
of Northwood in her memory.
Mary Ellen was
born in Albert Lea, Minnesota on
June 22, 1924, the daughter of
John S. and Ilah (Pease)
Veenker. She was baptized in the
Methodist faith. Mary Ellen lost
her mother to pneumonia at the
age of four. She attended
kindergarten in California while
living with her grandmother,
Ella Pease. Mary Ellen then
returned to Northwood with her
father, where she completed
grade school and graduated from
the Northwood High School in May
1942. As a young girl, Mary
Ellen was active in girl
scouting, chorus, girls glee
club and band where she played
the baritone. Mary Ellen was
crowned Mason City’s North Iowa
Band Festival Queen during her
senior year of high school. From
1942 to 1944, Mary Ellen
attended Stephens College in
Columbia, Missouri, majoring in
Liberal Arts with an Associate
of Arts Degree. She transferred
to Northwestern University in
Evanston, Illinois, completing a
Bachelor of Science Degree in
Business Administration.
Mary Ellen was
employed at the Equitable of
Iowa from 1946 to 1947 as
Personnel Assistant then as
Personnel Director at the Des
Moines Register and Tribune from
1947 to 1952. On May 20, 1951,
Joseph L. Orth of Des Moines and
Mary Ellen Veenker were married
at the Methodist Church in
Northwood. The couple divorced
in 1987. In 1960 Mary Ellen
worked for the Iowa Department
of Social Services. Later she
served as Community Relations
and Fund Development Director of
the North Iowa Girl Scout
Council, retiring in October of
1994.
Mary Ellen was
active in the community as a
volunteer and served on the
Board of Directors of the Mental
Health Center of North Iowa. She
was a member of PEO, Inter Se
and Rotary International. She
served on The Mason City Area
Chamber of Commerce Board of
Directors, the Clear Lake Arts
Council and on The North Iowa
Ethnic Celebration Committee.
She also served as a volunteer
with RSVP. Upon her retirement
Mary Ellen was awarded the
“Thanks badge” for her service
to the North Iowa Girl Scout
Council and was inducted into
the Association of Girl Scout
Executives (AGSES) Hall of Fame
for her 25 years of service in
girl scouting.
Mary Ellen
enjoyed travel, visiting
locations around the globe,
including England, Italy,
Greece, Egypt and Jamaica. In
later years Mary Ellen visited
China, Thailand, the Hawaiian
Islands, the Cayman Islands, St.
Maarten and Mexico. She was an
avid patroness of the arts. She
loved jazz, watching public
television, singing and playing
the piano. She was interested in
environmental issues and the
preservation of wild life and
natural habitats. Mary Ellen
lived an active life finding
enjoyment in a variety of
pursuits. She loved sailing on
the lake, camping, skiing,
cooking, golfing, biking and
gardening. She adored dancing at
big band dances at the Surf
Ballroom in Clear Lake.
Mary Ellen was
outgoing, caring and interested
in the welfare of other people.
Her friends and family found her
to be fun, lively and passionate
about life and eager to embrace
all new experiences. She
represented a positive role
model for dozens of girls and
young women, shaping their
future and helping them to
realize their potential through
girl scouting. Mary Ellen’s last
years were among her happiest
where she spent time traveling
the globe and enjoying many
adventures with her companion
Lloyd Madson, who showed loving
devotion to her over the years.
Survivors include
three children and their
spouses, John (Molly) Orth of
Minneapolis, Dr. Frank (Sandra)
Orth of Columbus Ohio and
Gretchen (Russ) Gondek of Sioux
City; and two grandchildren,
Hannah and Hunter Orth.

Evelyn Pearl Heagel

Evelyn Pearl Heagel, 81, of
Manly, Iowa, died on Monday,
January 31, 2011, at the Mercy
Medical Center North Iowa, Mason
City, Iowa.
Memorial services
were held at 2:00 p.m., on
Friday, February 4, at the
Bethany Lutheran Church,
Kensett, Iowa, with Pastor Tom
Martin officiating. Visitation
was one hour before the service.
Inurnment will be at a later
time in the Memorial Park
Cemetery, Mason City, Iowa. The
family suggests memorials to the
Evelyn Pearl Heagel memorial
fund.
Evelyn was born
on October 19, 1929 in Mason
City, Iowa, the daughter of
Willie John and Velma (Anderson)
Schutz. She graduated from the
Mason City High School in 1947.
Following high school, she
worked for the Earl May Fruit
Market, Mason City, Iowa. Evelyn
married Alexander Heagel on May
23, 1948, at the St. James
Lutheran Church, Mason City,
Iowa, and to this union five
children were born. She and her
husband farmed side by side in
the Kensett area for over 50
years. She later worked at the
Manly Farm Store, Manly Care
Center and then at Southbridge
Reality with her husband.
Her greatest joy
in life was her family and
following their many
accomplishments. She enjoyed
cooking, gardening, canning,
jigsaw puzzles, fishing trips
with her husband, Native
American culture and watching
her grandson race. She was a
member of the Bethany Lutheran
Church, Kensett.
Evelyn is
survived by her four daughters,
Janet "Jan" (Larry) Johnson of
Owatonna, Minnesota, Beverly
Loberg of Northwood, Mary
(Steve) Wise of Manly and Carol
(Dale) Hennigar of Manly; 14
grandchildren, Chad (Kristen)
Johnson, Jeni (Ben) Nichols,
Bradley Loberg, Eric Loberg,
Nathan Loberg, Kathy (Aaron)
Pals, Scott (Julie) Heagel,
Karen O'Banion, Kourtney Heagel,
Josh Wise, Katy Wise, Jenna
Wise, Alexis (Kenny) Kunz and
Dalcy (Devin) Lorentzen; 11
great-grandchildren;
sister-in-law, Jean Schutz of
Mason City, Iowa;
brother-in-law, Glenn Biggs of

She was preceded
in death by her parents;
