ALBERT L. ROBB

Albert L. Robb, 89, died at his home in Northwood on Dec. 19, 2013.

Funeral service will be on Monday, Dec. 23, 2013, at 10 a.m. at Northwood United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Shirley Hoffman Will officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Rest Cemetery, Northwood.

Visitation is scheduled for Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, Northwood.

Al was born near Grand Meadow, Minn., and graduated from Rochester High School in 1944. He worked in the Azores Islands building airports for the U.S. government in 1944-1945. He owned and operated a gas station in Stewartville, Minn., before moving to Northwood as a milk tester for the Worth County Dairy Herd Improvement Association from 1947-1952.

In 1952 he began farming, which he did until he retired in 1989. Al was a former member of the FmHA board, Odd Fellows and President of the Northwood Country Club.

Al was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Lela Robb; his mother- and father-in-law, Earl and Margaret (Wright) Schaub; brother, Floyd in Korea; sisters, Gretchen, Ruth, Alice and Helen Marie.

Al is survived by his wife Ruth (Schaub) Robb, whom he married on Nov. 23, 1949, at the Northwood Methodist Church, Northwood; his five children, Julie (Peter) Faria, Penny Robb, Dan (Julie) Robb, Mary (CK) Christianson and Tracy (Jeannie) Robb; his 8 grandchildren, Michael (fiancée Kari) Mogk, Bryan (Micki) Christianson, Isaac (Kelly) Mogk, Bradley (Jennie) Christianson, Calsee (fiancé Ben) Robb, Kerby (Chris) Helgeson, Tyson Robb and Jacob Robb; he had 12 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.  Al is also survived by his brother Duane (Fran) Robb and sister Florence.

LAURELL DUWAYNE DAVIS
June 3, 1928 - December 22, 2013

Laurell DuWayne Davis, 85, of rural Glenville, died on Sunday, Dec. 22, 2013, at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Deer Creek Valley Lutheran Church, rural Glenville, where he was a lifelong member. The Rev. Ronald Meyers will be officiating. Burial will be in London-Deer Creek Cemetery, rural Northwood.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home in Northwood and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Laurell was born on June 3, 1928, the son of Clyde and Corinne (Hendrickson) Davis. Laurell was a lifelong resident of Freeborn County; living the majority of his life on the farm he grew up on. He attended rural country schools and was a graduate of Northwood High School. On June 3, 1952, he was united in marriage to Clarice Lorraine Reyerson at Silver Lake Lutheran Church in rural Northwood. Laurell was drafted into the United States Army and served from 1954 to 1956. After his discharge, he returned home back to the farm. His love for his wife, Clarice, his family and Holstein cows was very evident throughout his life.

Laurell was very active in his community throughout his life. He was on the Deer Creek Cheese Factory Board, the American Dairy Association (ADA) Board along with Clarice; the London Township Board, the London-Deer Creek Cemetery Board, the Glenville School Board for 12 years, was Sunday school superintendent, Sunday school teacher, sang in the church choir and also served on the church council for many years at Deer Creek Valley Lutheran Church and was superintendent of the dairy barn at the Freeborn County Fair.

Laurell is survived by his wife, Clarice; five children Layne (Carol) Davis of Albert Lea, Lance (Sharon) Davis of Glenville, Brenda (Eric) Strenge of New Richland, Brian (Peggy) Davis of Glenville and Donna Davis of Glenville; 11 grandchildren Kristine (Nathan) Wolff, Kayla (Jake) Kral, Kyle (Krystle) Davis, Randene and Kendra Davis, Laura, Megan and Katie Manthey and Ethan Strenge, Samantha and Logan Davis; two great-grandchildren; several step-great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law Margie (Curtis) Davis and Marian Trytten; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Alton, Curtis and Emery; and sister, Yvonne Tews; brothers-in-law Leonard Tews and Manford Trytten; and sisters-in-law Arliss Davis and Clarice L. Davis.

GARY DEAN HEGGESTAD
July 8, 1944 - December 30, 2013

Gary Dean Heggestad, 69, Northwood, died Monday, December 30, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

A funeral service for Gary will be held at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, January 4, 2014, at the Emmons Lutheran Church in Emmons, MN, with Pastor Christopher Martin and Pastor Barbara Wills officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood with military honors conducted by members of Our Buddies VFW Memorial Post #6779, Northwood. Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. on Friday at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. South, Northwood. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to service time on Saturday at the church.

Gary Dean Heggestad was born on July 8, 1944 in Mason City, the son of Lloyd and Maxine (Link) Heggestad. Gary grew up in Northwood, and attended schools in Northwood and graduated from Nora Springs High School. Gary also lived in New Hampton, MO, for 13 years.

He was inducted into the Air Force on July 19, 1962, at Ft. Des Moines, and served in Viet Nam until his honorable discharge on June 10, 1965, at McCherd Air Force Base in Tacoma, Washington.

After his honorable discharge, Gary worked for Boeing Aircraft Corporation in Spokane, WA, and also in the potato fields in Texas and New Mexico. Gary began driving truck for 27 years, not only as being self employed, but also drove truck for other trucking companies. Gary worked for Fleet Guard Manufacturing in Lake Mills for three years and also for ACT in Northwood, retiring due to ill health.

He was united in marriage to Darlene Hillman on June 2, 1973, in Glenville, MN.

Gary enjoyed building model airplanes, being a pilot, bowling, singing, photography, and hunting and fishing, but his great love and enjoyment was spending time with his grandchildren.

He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Northwood, attending Bible studies at the church, Our Buddies VFW Memorial Post #6779 of Northwood, and the Northwood Lions Club.

Those left to cherish his memory is his wife, Darlene Heggestad of Northwood; his children, Jerry (Denise) Heggestad of Hereford, TX, Mark (Ann) Heggestad of Emmons, MN, Brad Heggestad of Northwood and special friend, Tricia Callstrom of Red Wing, MN, and Lynn (Sara) Heggestad of Glenville, MN; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; his sister, Linda Crill of Mt. Pleasant; as well as other extended family members and friends.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Marvie and Dennis Heggestad.

MICHAEL FOSS
June 13, 1948 - December 21, 2013

Michael was born on June 13, 1948 in Albert Lea, MN, the son of Harlan and Ione (Tue) Foss.  He was a member of the Deer Creek Valley Lutheran Church, and was baptized at First Lutheran Church in Albert Lea.

He attended school in Glenville, MN and graduated from Glenville High School in 1966.  He graduated from Luther College in Decorah, IA with a BS Degree in Accounting in 1970.  

Mike worked for the accounting firm of Peat, Marwick, Mitchell, and Co. in Chicago after college.   He made his way out west, where he worked for Smith’s Food in Salt Lake City, Utah; ran the Pizza Peddler in Bend, Oregon; and oversaw a campground in Caineville, Utah, near Zion National Park.  He most recently was employed at Shade Tree Liquor in Northwood.

Mike especially loved spending time in nature; camping under the stars, taking pictures, sailing, skiing in the mountains, and hiking.  In 2001, Mike moved back to Northwood where he was able to spend time with family and friends.  He enjoyed helping Gary Sola with the harvest every fall.  Although he never had any children of his own, he always took great joy in his many nieces and nephews, talking and laughing with them, and giving advice whenever they would ask.  They were all proud to call him Uncle Mike.

Michael is survived by brothers John Foss and wife Thelma (Jacobson) Foss of Albert Lea; and Paul Foss and wife Genie (Garnas) Foss of Northwood; Sister-In-Law Crystal (Gilbertson) Foss Eack of Menominee, MI; Many nieces and nephews and good friends Gary and Marcia Sola.

Michael was preceded in death by his parents, Harlon and Ione (Tue) Foss; Sister, Joanne (Foss) Thompson; Brothers Larry Foss, Bernard Foss and Allen Foss; Sister-in-Law Mary (Allison) Foss; and Brother-in-Law Roger Thompson.

RICHARD M GORDON
January 9, 1930 - January 12, 2014

Richard Maurice Gordon, 84, died at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit of North Iowa, Mason City, on Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014. Funeral service will be on Thursday, Jan. 16, 2014, at 1 p.m. at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Kensett, with the Rev. Tom Martin officiating. Burial will be in the Kensett Cemetery, Kensett. Visitation is scheduled for Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, Northwood. www.schroederandsites.com

Richard was born in Mason City, Iowa, to Ernest and Marjorie Gordon on Jan. 9, 1930.

He graduated from Kensett High School in 1947. He married Marlys Hanson in November 1950. They resided on a farm outside of Kensett.

To this union four children were born, Randy, Rick, Joel and Jessica.

After Marlys' death in 1996, Richard was united in marriage to Norma Evans, December 2001.

Richard had many interests over the years which included his life-long passion for farming. He was a coin collector, bird watcher and an avid fisherman. He also enjoyed going to antiques stores and had a variety of collections.

Richard enjoyed family vacations, holidays, playing cards and visits with his children and grandchildren.

He was a life time member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Kensett, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Marlys, and brother Tom Gordon.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife Norma of Northwood, Randy (Andy) Mooney of Abbotsford, B.C.; Richard Jr (Roxy) Gordon of Plymouth; Joel (Kris) Gordon of Kensett; and Jessica Marvin of Mason City; step-children John (Janet) Evans of Minneapolis, Minn., Paul (Dawn) Evans of Forest City; his sister Betty (Duane) Huisman of Waverly and grandchildren Bennett, Harrison, Maxwell, Samuel Mooney, Heather, Nathan, Matthew Gordon, Jacob, Michael Gordon, Kyle (Megan Binstock, fiancée), Tyler, Alyssa Marvin; step-grandchild Ian Evans; great-grandchild Caleb Oelberg.


THOMAS L. KVALO
1/5/1917 - 1/9/2014

Thomas L. Kvalo, 97, Muncie, Indiana, passed away on Thursday, January 9, 2014 at I.U. Health Ball Memorial Hospital.

He was born on January 5, 1917 in Lake Mills, Iowa, the son of Lars and Ella (Gunderson) Kvalo.

Thomas was the manager at Trailways Bus Company in Muncie where he worked for twenty-five years prior to his retirement.

He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Thomas was an avid reader, especially non-fiction and he enjoyed crossword puzzles.

Survivors include his wife of seventy-five years, Esther (Seeger) Kvalo; his children, Paul Kvalo of Parker City and Nancy Crowe (husband, David) of Fortville; his grandchildren, Sarah Bartel (husband, Michael) of Kewaunee, Wisconsin, Amy Crowe of Fortville and Rebecca Crowe of Pendleton; his great-grandchildren, Kathryn, Dean, LaNea and Grant all of Kewaunee, Wisconsin.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Arnold Kvalo; his sister, Irene Larsen; and his parents.

Services will be 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 13, 2014 at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, 610 North Reserve Street, with Rev. Daniel Mackey officiating. Burial will follow in Elm Ridge Cemetery.

Family and friends may call from 3:00 until 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 12, 2014 at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel or one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

STEVEN DANIEL SELVIG
June 7, 1993 - January 16, 2014


Mr. Steven Daniel SelvigSteven Daniel Selvig, 20, of Northwood, and North Mankato, Minnesota, died Thursday, January 16, 2014, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota, as a result of a motor vehicle accident near Clarks Grove, Minnesota.

A funeral service for Steven will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, January 22, 2014, at First Lutheran Church, 309 North 9th Street, Northwood, with Pastor Judy Converse officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset Rest Cemetery, Northwood. Visitation will be held from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. on Tuesday at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. South, Northwood. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to service time on Wednesday at the church.

Steven Daniel Selvig was born on June 7, 1993, in Burnsville, Minnesota, the son of Daniel Selvig and Dr. Dawn Stavish. Steven was baptized at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Burnsville, and reaffirmed the faith of his baptism through confirmation at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Platte, South Dakota. Steve graduated from Platte High School, in Platte, South Dakota, and was a student at Dakota State University in Madison, South Dakota.

He enjoyed playing video games on his computer, hunting with his father and friends, barbeque grilling, being with his friends, going to Minnesota Viking and Twins games, and was an avid fan and collector of sports memorabilia, especially the San Antonio Spurs basketball team.

Steven was a member of the National Honor Society in high school and Kappa Sigma Iota Honor Society at Dakota State University.

RONALD SEVERSON
June 28, 1939 - January 19, 2014

Mr. Ronald "Bump" James SeversonRonald “Ron” “Bump” Severson, 74, Northwood, died Sunday, January 19, 2014, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A visitation for Bump will be held from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. on Wednesday, January 22, 2014, at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. South, Northwood. Inurnment will take place in the spring in the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood, when military honors will be accorded.

Ronald James Severson was born on June 28, 1939 in rural Grafton, Iowa, the son of Roy and Mabel (Greiner) Severson. He was baptized in Deer Creek Lutheran Church, Carpenter, and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar. He attended Carpenter Consolidated Schools, and graduated from Carpenter High School in 1957. Bump worked for a short time on the Pete Hanson farm in Otranto. He was inducted into the Army on August 23, 1960, and served his country honorably and faithfully until his discharge on August 7, 1963. After being discharged from the Army, he began working for Oliver Company in Charles City before starting with Streaters Corporation in Albert Lea working for 33 years until his retirement. After his retirement he worked for a short time as a custodian for the United States Postal Service in Northwood.

He was united in marriage to Betty Luther on February 13, 1965 at the Deer Creek Lutheran Church in Carpenter, and to this marriage two children were born, Daniel and Dawn.

Bump loved his family and grandchildren, and enjoyed going to all their sporting events, especially his best friend and grandson, Michael. Bump also enjoyed hunting, fishing and going to his cabin in Waterville, MN.

He was a member of the Glenville, MN Veterans of Foreign Wars for 30 years, and a member of the Deer Creek Lutheran Church in Carpenter.

Those left to cherish his memory are his children, Daniel Severson of Manly and Dawn (Troy) Bachtle of Northwood; his grandchildren and best friend, Michael Bachtle of Northwood and his fiancé Kaitlyn Goplerud of St. Ansgar, Brooke (Adam) Nerlien of Clarion, Brett Bachtle of Northwood, and Kaylyn and Jenna Severson of Manly; great-grandchildren, Harper and Elliet Nerlien both of Clarion; his siblings, Richard (Karen) Severson of Manly, Sam Severson of St. Ansgar, and Marilyn O’Connor of Cedar Rapids; as well as many nieces, nephews, other extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Verlin Severson.

LEONA HERMAN
May 29, 1925 - January 17, 2014

Leona HermanFuneral services for Leona Ella Herman of Glenville, MN, will be held at 1:00 PM Tuesday at the First Lutheran Church in Glenville, MN. Pastor James Rushton will officiate. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Glenville, MN.

Leona died on Friday, January 17, 2014 at her home in Glenville. She was 88 years of age. Leona was born May 29, 1925 in New Richland, MN, the daughter of Herman and Phoebe Anna (Howe) Matthies.

She graduated from Albert Lea High School in 1943. On October 29, 1943 she was united in marriage to Verle Herman at the First Lutheran Church in Albert Lea, MN. Leona had been employed by Queens Products, was the City Assessor for Glenville, MN, and with Four Seasons Fountain Products. She had also been a member of the Elks Club.

Leona enjoyed crafts, sewing, ceramics, quilting, knitting, camping and travel. She loved to read, feed the birds and spend time with her family especially her grandchildren.

Leona is survived by her children Karen Nelson of Albert Lea, MN, Richard (Jeanne) Herman of Emmons, MN, David Herman of Glenville, MN, Philip (Linda) Herman of Blaine, MN. Grandchildren Shari Nelson, Jackie (Brian) Otterson, Randy (Angie) Harmdierks, Krista (Mike) Honsey, Lisa (Chad) Peterson. Great grandchildren Brandon (Melissa) Burnett, Cody, Brooke Otterson, Marley, Harper, Haydon Honsey, Claire, Norah Peterson. Great great grandchildren Issack and Olivia. One sister in law Bonnie Hengestad of Northwood, IA, many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sisters LuLu Epland, Mildred Lucas, Anna Phoebe Matthies and sister in law Mary Jean Jaspers.

RENA RUSTAD
January 15, 1930 - January 20, 2014

rena rustadRena was born at the Rustad farm at Northwood, Iowa on January 15, 1930. She was the fourth child of Reuben and Mae (Johnson) Rustad. She was baptized and confirmed at the North Shell Rock Lutheran Church at Northwood Iowa.   Rena attended school at Grove #3 through the 6th grade and graduated from Northwood High School in 1947.

She continued her education at Waldorf College obtaining a elementary teaching degree.  Following a teaching career at Belle Plaine, Iowa, she furthered her education at Luther College majoring in Bible and Religious Studies.  While attending Waldorf and Luther Colleges, Rena was involved within the music departments in both band and choir.

Rena began her profession in the Church the year she graduated from Luther  College.  She joined the staff of a new congregation in Arleta, California, with responsibilities in music, youth, and education.  A decade later she left Calvary Lutheran Church and moved to St Paul, Minnesota where she again worked for the ALC.  In Minnesota she managed the synod’s budget and its conventions. She moved to Chicago in 1988 where she was the administrative assistant to the Bishop of the ELCA for 8 years.  During Rena’s career she received many awards and recognitions including a Distinguished Service Award from Luther College.

Throughout Rena’s life she enjoyed traveling, attending operas and theater. Rena retired to San Diego, California for 12 years before moving back to Northwood.   She was a current member of the First Lutheran Church in Northwood.

Survivors include her sisters Margaret Berge and Helen Senne both of Northwood.  Sister-in-law Mavis Rustad of Blue Earth, Minnesota. Nieces and and nephews include Marcia (Richard) Kraft, Allen (Jamie) Berge, Julie Berge, Susie (Jay) Hahn, Joan (John) Huisman, Roger (Debra) Rustad, Aryln Rustad (Kerin Madsen), Mark (Suzanne) Senne and Mary Jo Porter (Jerry Smith).  15 great nieces and nephews and 15 great-great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, toddler sister Helen Lorraine, brothers Harold and Curtis, and brothers-in-law Alvin Berge and Ed Senne.

RICHARD TENOLD
August  1,1952 - December 7, 2013


Richard TenoldRichard Lynn Tenold of Albert Lea died on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013. He was 61 years old.

He was born Aug. 1, 1952, in Albert Lea to Dean H. and Lois A. Tenold. His early years were spent in Kensett, Iowa. The family moved to Alden where he attended school and graduated in 1970.

Upon graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He retired with an honorable discharge after more than 20 years of service as an aviation electronic technician.

After his retirement he attended the University of Minnesota-Duluth where he studied sociology and philosophy. Richard Tenold He was an avid golfer and pool player. He also enjoyed fishing, bowling, music and dancing. He was a human rights and political activist. His greatest wish was for peace.

He was passionate in what he believed in and wanted to be a changer of planet Earth. He loved a good debate and loved to tease, especially his nieces and nephews. He loved his family, and family time was very important to him.

He is survived by his mother, Lois Tenold, of Albert Lea; siblings Rodney (Marilyn) Tenold of Albert Lea, Kimberly (Jerry) Bromeland of Elmore, Loren (Anne) Mahoney of Champlin and Kandace (Mark) Stewart of Pleasant Prairie, Wis.; as well as many nieces and nephews. He had a special father and daughter relationship with Kristi DeWitt of Jadesonville, Fla.

He was proceeded in death by his father, Dean Tenold; brother, Steven Tenold; and grandparents Henry (Minda) Tenold and Seymour (Hazel) Reyerson.

A celebration of life honoring the memory of Rick Tenold will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday in the back room of the Albert Lea Moose Lodge.
