Berdella Sheller

TEHACHAPI,
California-Berdella Earldine (Nerem) Sheller, 97, of
Tehachapi, California and formerly of Forest City, passed
away on Wednesday, June 2, 2010.
Born on May 27, 1913, she
was the daughter of Ed and Tillie (Hegreberg) Nerem.
Berdella married Lyle Sheller of Belmond in 1932. They
settled in Rippey where Lyle was a barber. Their three
children were born there. During World War II, the family
moved to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, because Lyle was a Seabee
stationed at Farragut Naval Station. Following his
discharge, the family moved to Forest City and he continued
barbering.
Berdella was a homemaker
and a very active member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church.
She was also active in the American Legion Auxiliary, Art
Club and Women's Club.
In 1964, the couple
purchased the Snelling Motel in Minneapolis, Minnesota and
moved there to manage it. Their next move was to Decorah
where they were partners in a movie theater. From Decorah,
they moved to Glendale, California, where they owned and
operated a Laundromat until retirement. During their
retirement, they enjoyed traveling around the United States
and into Mexico in their Minnie Winnie.
Berdella
is survived by her son, Gary (Marvel) Sheller of Tehachapi,
California; son-in-law, Al Erdahl of Hopkins, Minnesota;
granddaughter, Ann (Mike) Chiarini of Tehachapi, California;
granddaughter-in-law, Melinda Sheller of Camarillo,
California; grandsons, Mark Erdahl of Minneapolis, Minnesota
and Dean Erdahl of Crystal, Minnesota; great-grandchildren,
Matt Fort and Luke Chiarini of Tehachapi, California,
Caroline, Claire and Madeline Sheller of Camarillo,
California and Everett Erdahl of Minneapolis, Minnesota;
sister, Mavis Bygness of Denison; and cousins, nieces and
nephews.
She was preceded in death
by her parents; her husband; two daughters, Marna Erdahl of
Hopskins, Minnesota and Karen Sheller of Northridge,
California; two brothers and their wives, Marvin (Evelyn)
Nerem and Duane (Nancy) Nerem of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania;
grandson, Kirk Sheller of Camarillo, California; and
great-granddaughter, Kelley Ann Fort.
Burial will be in the
Madison Cemetery later this summer. The Petersen Lund
Funeral Home will be in charge of the arrangements.

Karen Sheller
July 8, 2010
SUNLAND, California-Karen
Elaine Sheller, age 73, of Northridge, California, passed
away on Sunday, March 29, 2009.
Memorial services were
held on April 18, 2009, at the Grace Community church in
Sunland, California.
Karen was the daughter of
Lyle and Berdella (Nerem) Sheller, born on March 9, 1936, in
Rippey. Karen's family moved to Forest City when she was in
the second grade. She graduated from the Forest City High
School in 1954 and from the Broadlawns School of Nursing in
Des Moines in 1958. She began her medical career at the
Forest City Municipal Hospital.
In July 1959, Karen joined
the navy for two years and was stationed in Boston,
Massachusetts. Following her discharge she went back to
school and became a nurse anesthetist. She then worked in
Detroit, Michigan and Chicago, Illinois, before deciding to
move to Los Angeles where weather was warmer. While on a
trip through Texas, she was impressed with Houston's huge
medical center. She moved to Houston to work for seven years
and then returned to Northridge, California. She ended her
career working for the Kaiser Hospital System for over
twenty years.
Karen was very active in
her church. She sang in the choir, taught Bible studies and
worked with the youth. She joined Mercy Ships, a Ministry of
Youth with a Mission. She made three trips in the Caribbean
and two trips on the west coast of Africa, where she helped
with surgery on young people.
Karen is survived by her
mother, Berdella Sheller; her brother, Gary (Marvel) Sheller
of Tehachapi, California; and sister, Marna (Al) Erdahl of
Hopkins, Minnesota. Since Karen's death, Berdella and Marna
have passed away. She was preceded in death by her father,
Lyle Sheller.
Burial will be in the
Madison Cemetery. The Petersen Lund Funeral Home will be in
charge of the arrangements.

Donald E. Hanson,

FOREST CITY-Donald E.
Hanson, age 69, of Forest City, died on Thursday, June 3,
2010, at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City,
following a heart transplant.
Memorial services were
held at 11:00 a.m., on Monday, June 7, at the West Prairie
Lutheran Church in rural Leland, with the Rev. Timothy
Miller officiating. Burial was in Norway Township in rural
Kanawha.
Donald E. Hanson, was born
in Fort Dodge, on March 15, 1941 to Roy E. and Bertha (Amosson)
Hanson. He graduated from the Belmond High School in 1959.
Don began his career with the Iowa State Department of
Transportation in Clarion in 1959. Don was married to
Shirley Tripp on June 18, 1961 at Belmond. They were blessed
with three children. In 1978, Donald was promoted and the
family moved to Forest City. Don finished his career after
37 years in Mt. Ayr and came back to Forest City where he
retired.
Don was active in the West
Prairie Lutheran Church by serving on various church boards
and was church council president. Don loved to fish and
spent many years fishing in Minnesota and Canada and enjoyed
salmon fishing in Wisconsin. He also enjoyed spending time
with his family, playing cards and socializing with friends
over coffee.
Don is survived by his
wife of 48 years, Shirley; his children, Kathy and husband,
Kevin Triggs of Mt. Ayr, Kristine and husband, Jerome
Christianson of Hartley and James and wife, Denise Hanson of
Brooklyn; 4 grandchildren, Johnathan and Tyler Triggs,
Colton Christianson and Erica Lynn Orrell; his brother, Roy
and wife, Diane Hanson of Fort Dodge; sister, Linda Hanson
of Garner; and many nieces and nephews.
Donald was preceded in
death by his parents.

Darvin H. Kettwick,
54

BUFFALO CENTER-Darvin H.
Kettwick, 54, of Buffalo Center, Iowa, passed away at the
Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona, Iowa, on Thursday,
June 3, 2010, after a valiant battle with cancer.
Memorial services were
held at 10:30 a.m., on Tuesday, June 8, at the First
Reformed Church in Buffalo Center. The Rev. Bill Peake was
the minister. According to his wishes, his body was cremated
with inurnment in the Graceland Cemetery.
Darvin
Harold Kettwick, son of Harold and Deloris (Dontje) Kettwick,
was born in Buffalo Center on August 27, 1955. He was
baptized and confirmed at the First Reformed Church in
Buffalo Center. Darv graduated from the Buffalo Center High
School in 1973. He attended Iowa State University and then
went on to work at Kleinwort's Hog Farm prior to farming for
28 years with his dad, brother Mike, and cousin Bryan
Wessels until his death.
On August 30, 1997, Darvin
was united in marriage to Robin (Kramme) Howell, daughter of
Edward and Judy Kramme of Osage, at the First Reformed
Church. Chris and Abby, Robin's children, were a major part
of this newly formed family.
Darv
was actively involved with things that were important to
him. He was a member of the First Reformed Church and served
on the consistory as an elder and deacon. He was also a
choir member and Sunday School teacher. The Winnebago County
Fair was a special tradition. He was a long-time fair board
member, beef barn superintendent and served eight years as
president. Darvin was a life-time alumni member of the Bison
FFA. Judging crop shows, proficiency awards and speaking
contests at the local to state levels gave him a great deal
of joy and satisfaction. As recently as May 18th he and
Bryan tilled and planted the FFA plot.
Darv
believed in being practical, comfortable and close to home.
He valued a quality work ethic, traditions, honest opinions
and the concept of “tough love” to help children be the best
they could be.
Special moments in his
young life included FFA livestock judging, crop shows and
awards including earning the Iowa Farmer Degree. He enjoyed
showing livestock at the county and state levels and was
proud of winning the Grand Champion Chester White Female in
the open class competition at the Iowa State Fair. His
selection for first-team all conference in football was
valued. He enjoyed his collection of pigs and FFA
semis. Playing slow-pitch softball, watching the Kentucky
Derby, helping at Crazy Days, mixing batter at Pancake Day
and making the world's best caramel popcorn at Christmas
were important to him.
He is survived by his
wife, Robin of Buffalo Center; children, Chris Howell of
Clear Lake and Abby Howell of Mason City; mother, Deloris
Kettwick of Buffalo Center; his sister and brothers, Madonna
Kettwick of Waukon, Michael (Carole) Kettwick of Buffalo
Center, Wayne (Tracy) Kettwick of DeWitt and David (Renee)
Kettwick of Clarinda; and by nieces, nephews and the rest of
Robin's family.
Darvin
was preceded in death by his grandparents; his father,
Harold; and his nephew, Tyler.

Bernadine T.
Harbacheck, 91
June 16, 2010
Bernadine T. Harbacheck,
91, of Britt, died peacefully on Wednesday, June 9, 2010, at
the Westview Care Center in Britt.
A memorial celebration of
her life will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Thursday, July 8, at
the Westview Care Center. There will be no visitation. Her
body was donated to the University of Iowa College of
Medicine. The Cataldo Funeral Home in Britt is in charge of
the arrangements.
Bernadine Theresa
Harbacheck, the daughter of Louis and Theresa (Hikade)
Schuster, was born on October 3, 1918 in Barnum. She
graduated from the Barnum Consolidated High School in 1936
and St. Joseph College of Nursing in Ft. Dodge in 1941. On
April 21, 1942, she married Matthias Harbacheck in Moorland.
They lived in Joplin, Missouri until 1947, when they moved
to Britt.
Through her giving and
caring heart, she touched the lives of many as she completed
57 years of nursing, retiring in 1997. Her last days were
surrounded with love by the caring staff at the Westview
Care Center and Hospice of North Iowa. Bernie received the
peace of Christ. We love you and will miss you.
Bernie is survived by many
nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death
by her husband, Matt on June 19, 1991; her parents; four
sisters; and six brothers.

Clarence
C. Pals, 94
June 24, 2010
FOREST CITY-Clarence C. Pals, age 94, of Forest City, died
on Monday, June 14, 2010, at the Good Samaritan Care Center
in Forest City.
A Memorial visitation was
held on Thursday, June 17, at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home
in Forest City. A prayer service followed with the Rev.
Douglas Farrell. Inurnment will be at a later date in the
Madison Township Cemetery in rural Forest City.
Clarence C. Pals, was born
on June 3, 1916 near Goodell, the son of Klass and Mary (Saatoff)
Pals. He grew up in Hancock County and attended rural
schools and the Clear Lake High School. As a young man he
worked on the family farm and in later years worked for area
farms. He married Marjorie Ellen Hockenson and they farmed
near Fertile until her death in an auto accident.
In 1944, Clarence married
Mildred "Millie" Vonder Linde. The couple farmed near Manly
until 1959, when they purchased their farm near Forest City.
Clarence loved the farm.
He was in the dairy business for years and also raised
cattle and hogs. Farming with horses was a joy to him. Even
as a young boy he loved to work with horses. He had a
livestock hauling business for many years. Clarence retired
in 1999.
Survivors include his wife
of 65 years, Millie; a daughter, Judy and her husband,
Charles Madson of Ventura; and several nieces and nephews.
Clarence was preceded in
death by his parents; his first wife; two brothers, Dowia
and Warren Pals; and six sisters, Greona Nelson, Gertie
Pals, Elsie Rickard, Alma Nelson, Esther Beek and Gertrude
Radloff.

Carole Y. Rodberg,
75

LAKE MILLS-Carole Yvonne Rodberg, age 75, of Lake Mills,
died on Thursday, June 17, 2010, at the Lake Mills Care
Center in Lake Mills.
Funeral services were
Tuesday, June 22, 2010, at the Salem Lutheran Church. Burial
was in the Salem Lutheran Cemetery in Lake Mills.
Carole Yvonne Rodberg, was
born on February 8, 1935 in Wells, the daughter of Fred, Sr.
and Marguerite (Campbell) Lackey. She graduated “Class of
1953” from the Mason City High School and then attended La
James Beauty College in Mason City. Carole was united in
marriage to Dale Rodberg on August 4, 1962. She was employed
by Winnebago Industries in Forest City for 15 years.
Carole loved her family
and will be remembered for both her tough side (her
disciplining) and her soft side (her sense of humor and her
laugh). She enjoyed gardening and canning and made many
beautiful quilts.
Survivors include her
children, Cindy (Bruce) Olson of Pine City, Minnesota, Russ
Rodberg of Twin Lakes, Minnesota, Julie (Dave) Karjalahti of
Savage, Minnesota, Jodie (Travis) Stinehart of Lake Mills
and Jim Rodberg of Scarville; eight grandchildren, Brittney,
Aubrey, Sarah, Christina, Robert, Tony, Kelly and Dana; two
great-grandchildren of GG's, Cayli and Austin; two brothers,
Floyd Lackey of Wells and David Prestholt of Twin Lakes,
Minnesota; a sister, Lynda Vermedahl of Twin Lakes; an aunt,
Betty Jones of Albert Lea, Minnesota; and many nieces,
nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death
by her father, Fred Lackey, Sr. and mother, Marguerite
“Granny” Prestholt; husband, Dale; a son, Jamie in infancy;
two brothers, Fred Lackey and Richard Prestholt; grandson,
Nicholas Olson; a brother-in-law, Roger Vermedahl; and a
sister-in-law, Millie Lackey.

Kelly, 70
June 24, 2010
Marlys J. (Goetz) Kelly, 70, died peacefully on Sunday, June
20, 2010, at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason
City, surrounded by her family.
A mass of Christian Burial
will be held on Wednesday, June 23, at 10:00 a.m., at the
St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Britt, with Father Henry
Huber officiating. Burial will be in the St. Patrick's
Catholic Cemetery in Britt. Visitation was held on Tuesday,
June 22, from 5-8:00 p.m., at the St. Patrick's Catholic
Church, with a scriptural wake service at 8:00
p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the services
at the church.
Marlys,
the daughter of Joseph and Marjorie (Sparks) Goetz, was born
on November 4, 1939, on a farm northwest of Wesley. She
graduated from the Wesley High School in 1957. Following
graduation, Marlys attended Iowa State Teacher's College in
Cedar Falls for two years. She then was employed with
Remington Rand in Des Moines. Marlys
was united in marriage with Paul Kelly on February 16, 1960
at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wesley. The couple
lived for a short time in Des Moines before moving back to
Britt in August.
Marlys
was a member of the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Britt
and also was a member of the Catholic Daughters of the
Americas.
She took great joy in her
nine children and their many activities, including 4-H,
softball, volleyball, golf, football, track, basketball and
wrestling. Marlys found it especially rewarding to see her
sons walk in the state high school wrestling grand march.
West Hancock and Iowa State University athletics continued
to be a major part of her activities up until her death.
Until recent years,
maintaining a large vegetable and flower garden consumed
much of her free time. She also enjoyed the holidays and any
other occasion the family got together. She was very proud
of the fact that her grandchildren were equal in number at
11 girls and 11 boys.
She also cherished her
time spent with her sisters Joan, Toots and Normie. When the
Goetz girls got together to shop, talk and take weekend
trips, rest assured, there was very little sleep and much
laughter. She always looked forward to her Thursday morning
coffee group friends. Marlys was most
excited to have been healthy enough to celebrate with Paul
their 50th wedding anniversary and 50th year in business on
April 10, 2010. She also was able to celebrate the wedding
of her son, Jeff, to Sara in early June.
Marlys
is survived by her husband of 50 years, Paul of Britt; nine
children and their families, Karen and Michael Sankey of
Algona and their sons, Robert and William; Connie Kelly of
Cedar Rapids; Timothy and ReNae Kelly of Plover, Wisconsin
and their children, Regan, Elizabeth, Jack and Grace;
Jeffrey and Sara Kelly of Urbandale; Michael and Susan Kelly
of Ankeny and their children, Storm, Rachel, Brooklyn and
Paul; Patrick and Lisa Kelly of Topeka, Kansas and their
children, Ryan, Bailey and Ella; Steven and DeAnna Kelly of
Britt and their children, Cole, Kennedy, Creighton and
Hayden; Kristie and Nathan Smith of Ankeny and their
children, Tillie and Maizie; and Mark and Morgan Kelly of
Ankeny and their children, Maclaine, Bria and Cameron; three
sisters, Joan Grandgenett of Wesley, Carol (Toots)
Youngworth and husband, John of Wesley and Norma Biegger of
Polk City; and numerous nieces, nephews, other family
members and friends.
She was preceded in death
by her parents; sister, Lois Weiland; and brother, Bill
Goetz.

Betty Fox, 83
July 1, 2010
Betty Fox, 83, of Britt,
passed away on Wednesday, June 23, 2010, at the Mercy
Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.
Funeral services were held
on Saturday, June 26, at 10:30 a.m., at the Ewing Funeral
Chapel in Britt, with Pastor Robert Dodge officiating.
Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery in Britt. Visitation
was held on Friday, June 25, from 5-7:00 p.m., at the Ewing
Funeral Chapel in Britt and continued one hour prior to the
services at the church.
Betty, the daughter of
Aaron and Bessie (Kurtz) Greiman, was born on April 18, 1927
in Klemme. She attended the Garner High School. Betty was
united in marriage with Larry E. Fox, on April 14, 1946 in
Britt. The couple made their home in Britt. For the past
three years, Betty was a resident of the Concord Care
Assisted Living facilities in Garner.
Betty enjoyed spending
time with her loving family, especially her
grandchildren. She also enjoyed caring for her flower
gardens, making crafts and baking. Betty was a member of the
Britt United Methodist Church and the Britt American Legion
Auxiliary.
Betty is survived by three
children and their families, daughter, Kathy (David) Davis
of Pensacola, Florida and children, Tammy (Larry) Anderson,
Brent (Tammy) Huisinga and Angie O'Brien; daughter, Karen
(Daryl) Brunsen of Crystal Lake and children, Sheila Warrick
and Eric (Laura) Brunsen; son, Gary (Sandy) Fox of Mason
City and children, Jason (Amy) Fox and Jennifer (Dane)
Bjugan; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild;
one sister, Mary Ann (Lewis) Formanek of Phoenix, Arizona;
and numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and
friends.
She was preceded in death
by her parents; and husband, Larry on October 10, 1985.

Dean E.
Frederickson, 82
July 8, 2010
CARROLL-Dean Edward Fredrickson, 82, of Carroll, died on
Tuesday, June 29, 2010, at the Black Hawk Life Care Center
in Lake View.
Funeral services were held
on Wednesday, July 7, at the St. John Lutheran Church in
Carroll, with the Rev. David Bergstrom as officiant. Burial
of cremated remains for Mr. Fredrickson and his wife, Anne
Fredrickson was on Thursday, July 8, in the Oakland
Municipal Cemetery in Forest City.
Born on December 23, 1927
at Forest City, he was the son of Eddie and Alice (Anderson)
Fredrickson. He grew up in Forest City and graduated from
High School in 1946. He then enlisted in the United States
Navy and served two years. He attended Waldorf College in
Forest City and graduated in 1950. He was married to Anne
Larson on June 20, 1952, at the Little Brown Church in the
Vale in Nashua, Iowa. Dean worked for Standard Oil in the
accounting office living in Mason City, Des Moines, Kansas
City and Carroll. He retired after 26 years of service and
went to work for McDonald Associates of Omaha, retiring in
October of 2003 due to poor health.
Dean was a loving father
and grandfather and was very proud of his family. He was a
member of the St. John's Lutheran Church. He was a sports
fan, loved to golf and loved spending time with his three
grandchildren.
Surviving are a daughter,
Lisa Brinker of Lake View; three grandchildren, Stacy
Brinker of Westminster, Colorado, Melanie Brinker of Denver,
Colorado and Gregory Brinker of Carroll; a daughter-in-law,
Debbie Fredrickson of Alburgh, Vermont; a sister, Arlys
Swingen of Forest City; and sister-in-law, Mary Franzen of
Titonka; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death
by his parents; wife, Anne in 2001; son, Timothy on February
17, 2010; brother, Marvin Fredrickson; brother-in-law,
Russell Swingen; his mother and father-in-law, Dr. Leonard
and Margaret Larson; and a nephew, Dennis Swingen.

Orville Cole, 90
July 8, 2010
FOREST CITY-Orville Cole, 90, of Forest City, formerly of
Ames, died on Wednesday, June 30, 2010, at the Good
Samaritan Society in Forest City.
Funeral services were held
on Saturday, July 3, at the Calvary Baptist Church in Forest
City, with Pastor Doug Farrell officiating. Burial was in
the Madison Township Cemetery, with military rites by the
Forest City Veterans Ceremonial Unit. The Petersen Lund
Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Orville Cole, the son of
George and Clara (Nerem) Cole, was born on January 20, 1920
near Roland. He was baptized and confirmed at the Salem
Lutheran Church in Roland. He graduated from the Roland High
School in 1939 and worked on the family farm with his
brother. He served his country during WW II in the U.S. Army
from 1942 until his honorable discharge as Staff Sergeant in
1945. Orville served in the 90th Division, 358th Infantry,
Company C and took part in the battle and campaigns of
Normandy, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. He
received the European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon
with four Bronze Battle Stars, a Bronze Service Arrowhead,
three overseas service bars, a service stripe, a Silver Star
for bravery, Purple Heart medal with first and second Bronze
Clusters and a Combat Infantry badge. He was wounded at
Normandy, Moisell River and at the Belgium Bulge. Following
his discharge, he returned home to farm until 1950 when he
moved to Forest City.
At the age of 33 he
accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior. On February 1,
1954, he married Frances Smith at the Calvary Baptist Church
Parsonage. For a short time he operated a restaurant and
worked for several farmers. Between 1958 and 1961 he worked
for the Forest City Public Schools as custodian. Then the
family moved to Ames where Orville was employed at the
school system and post office. In 1973, they moved to a farm
near Boone where he was instrumental in starting and
building the Berean Baptist Church. He served faithfully as
a deacon and in many other capacities. He retired from the
post office in August of 1983 as head of maintenance. In
August of 1991, he and Frances returned to Forest City and
in 1993 moved to a farm east of town. Due to ill health,
they moved to Ames in 2005.
He was a member of the
Heartland Baptist Church in Ames and the Calvary Baptist
Church in Forest City.
Orville is survived by his
wife, Frances of Ames; two sons, Craig Cole of Overland
Park, Kansas and David (Ruth) Cole of Ames; two
grandchildren, Jonathan and Hannah Cole; a sister-in-law,
Jeanne Cole of Mason City; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death
by his parents; daughter, Mary Beth Cole; daughter-in-law,
Aviah Cole; two sisters, Abbie Peterson and Morna Olson; and
four brothers, Arnold, Virgil, Ernie and George Cole.
