Fertile Man
Drowns in River
July 29, 2010
FERTILE-James Thompson, 43, of Fertile, drowned at about
noon Monday, while attempting to remove a log stuck above the
Fertile dam on the Winnebago River. Thompson was attempting to
move the log when he fell over the dam the Worth County Sheriff's
Department said. Thompson's body was recovered at about 1:00
p.m., about a half mile downstream.
Witnesses at the scene
identified Thompson and the Globe Gazette said Tuesday the
funeral home also identified Thompson as the victim.
“He was pushing the log
trying to get it to fall in the water at the edge of the
dam,” Joseph Elings, 13, of Fertile said. “When the log
finally fell off, he tried to swim back to grab onto the
ledge and couldn't make it.”
Elings
said he had been working with Thompson to remove logs and
other debris near the dam. "He popped up a couple of
times, then I never saw him again," Elings said of Thompson
Emergency personnel
performed CPR for more than half an hour but could not
revive him, Worth County Sheriff Jay Langenbau said.
The man was in the water
when he fell, Elings said. Elings
and his dad "hung out with Jim a lot." The owner of the mill
often hired Joe and Jim for miscellaneous jobs, Elings said.
Monday, they were about 30
minutes into cleaning up logs and sticks from the top of the
dam, when the three-pronged hook (on a line) got caught on a
log and pulled Thompson in. Thompson was swept over
the the dam, which Langenbau estimated is nearly 20 feet
high. Langenbau
said the river is higher than normal with recent heavy rains
and is probably moving faster than normal, too. “There's a lot of suction
at the bottom of the dam,” Langenbau said. It is the second drowning
at the Fertile dam in the past 10 to 12 years, Langenbau
said.
An autopsy will be
performed.
The Worth County Sheriff's
Department was assisted at the scene by the Iowa State
Patrol, Department of Natural Resources, Winnebago County
Sheriff's Department, Fertile Fire Department, Hanlontown
Fire Department, Clear Lake Fire Department and Manly Police
Department.
