Jon Weiland's Body
Found
By Peggy Senzarino, for the News-Tribune
April 14, 2010
BRITT-The body of a missing Britt man was found in a heavily
wooded area off of Winnebago County Road R34 and 430th
Street in rural Thompson, about 5:50 p.m. on Tuesday.
Jon Weiland, 43, had been
missing since December 19, 2009. He was last seen at a bar
in Walters, Minnesota. According to a press release from the
Winnebago County Sheriff's Department, it is believed
Weiland was driving southbound on R34 when he left the road
on a curve. After leaving the road he apparently lost
control and hit several trees.
Rose Villela of Thompson
told the Globe Gazette she was coming home from work Tuesday
night when she spotted something red in the evergreen trees.
She didn't think much of it until she was in the grocery
store. She decided to go back to the area and then called
her son. They went into the evergreen trees where they found
Weiland's red truck lying on its top buried in the thick
spread of trees. “My son looked in the truck to see if he
was in the truck,” she said. The truck was empty. Weiland's body was
found some distance away on the edge of the wooded area near
a field.
Villela
recalled reading the story in Monday's Globe Gazette about
Weiland's disappearance. “There's a bunch of evergreen trees
there that are really, really thick,” Villela said. “It was
flipped upside down and the front end was facing north.
There was pieces of mirror hanging in the tree. It was a
long ways back in there.” She said a driver was killed on
that road several years ago when losing control of the car
on a patch of icy blacktop and the vehicle went airborne.
“I've been by there at least 100 times in the last four
months,” Villela said. After reading Monday's story in the
Globe Gazette, she checked a drainage ditch near her home.
“I don't know why I had a weird sense that it was close by
me,” she said.
“It was almost impossible
for anybody to see it. It was just a freak thing that I
noticed that red. I'd never seen that before. I know I've
traveled that road at least 100 times in the last four
months since he's been missing.”
Villela said she was glad she could
give Weiland's family some closure and comfort. “I just felt
really bad for his son and his daughter and stuff. I know
that they felt like police had put it on the back burner.”
Weiland
was last seen on the night of December 19, 2009, at Rathai's
Roadhouse Bar & Grill in Walters, Minnesota. Weiland was listed on
the National Crime Information Center missing persons
database, along with the Missing Persons Information
Clearinghouse, handled by the Division of Criminal
Investigation with the Iowa Department of Public Safety.
Weiland,
employed at Monson & Sons Inc., a trucking company in Britt,
was a talented painter of custom motorcycles and golf carts.
Assisting at the scene
Tuesday were the Winnebago County Sheriff's Department,
Winnebago County Sheriff's Reserve, Hancock County Sheriff's
Department, Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, Iowa
State Patrol, Thompson Fire Department and Winnebago County
Emergency Management.
