Frieda Sorenson, 82, of Lake Mills, died on Wednesday, May 1, 2002, at the Lake Mills Care Center, where she has been a resident for the past four years.

Funeral services were held on Friday, May 3, at the Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills. The Rev. Kevin Mackey officiated. Burial was in the Salem Memorial Cemetery.

Survivors include her children, Violet and her husband, Jim Bailey of Oaklawn, Illinois and Paul Sorenson and his wife, Mary of Lake Mills; five grandchildren, Rachel and her husband, Tony Johnston of Chicago, Illinois, Stephen Patterson of Chicago, Todd Sorenson and his wife, Beth of Lake Mills, Anthony Sorenson of Lake Mills and James R. Bailey of Chicago; five great-grandchildren, Jacob Sorenson, Josey Sorenson, Faith Sorenson, Abby Johnston and Ellie Johnston; two sisters, Marie Helland and Isabel and her husband, Darryl Lee, all of Albert Lea; three sisters-in-law, Dorothy Beck, Muriel Solomonson and Alva Sorenson; and one brother-in-law, Richard Sorenson and his wife, Joan.

Leotha E. George, 85, of Forest City, died on Wednesday, May 1, 2002, at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 4, at the Forest City United Methodist Church. The Rev. Gary Marzolf officiated.

Survivors include a son and his wife, Keith and Marge George of Shell Rock; three grandchildren, Troy George and his wife, Cyndi, Trisha and her husband, Daniel Lowther and Travis George and his wife, Bridgett, all of Aurora, Colorado; 10 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Mae Riherd of Forest City, Wilma Lea of Paso Robles, California, Betty Nelson of Britt and Jacqueline Monson of Forest City; and two brothers, Lester McColloch of Lake Mills and Warren McColloch of Emmons, Minnesota.

Richard Orville "Tiny" Potter, 86, of Buffalo Center, died on Friday, May 3, 2002, at the Titonka Care Center.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 9, at the United Methodist Church in Buffalo Center. The Rev. Lois Abel will officiate. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery in Buffalo Center. Visitation is from 4-7:00 p.m., today, Wednesday, May 8, at the Winter Funeral Home in Buffalo Center.

Survivors include his wife, Agnes; his daughters and sons, Dolores M. Badje of Buffalo Center, Donald D. Potter and wife, MaeAnne of Elma, Sandra L. Mireles and husband, Tony of Forest City, Carol Jo Smidt and husband, Jack of Woodbine, Georgia and Rick Potter and wife, Linda of Buffalo Center; his grandchildren, Tina M. Pickett, Thomas D. Potter, Jason L. Smidt, Dawn M. Potter, Donald Dean Potter Jr., Jonathan R. Potter, Jessie M. Mireles, Andrew C. Potter, Ryan D. Potter and Cody A. Mireles; his great-grandchildren, Joshua T. Potter, Matthew R. Potter, Christopher R. Potter and Nicholas W. Smidt; three siblings, Velma Severson of Forest City, Bertha Julius of Sun City West, Arizona and William Potter and wife, Janet of Garnavillo; and two sisters-in-law, Alice Potter of Garner and Florence Potter of Buffalo Center.

Robert F. Smith, 55, of Los Angeles, California, formerly of Thompson, died unexpectedly on Friday, May 3, 2002, at the Riverside Medical Center in California.

Graveside services were held on Saturday, June 1, in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Thompson. Rev. Wendy Trone of the United Methodist Church officiated.

Survivors include his mother, Maxine Friesenborg of Algona; his wife, Mary Lou and her children and grandchildren, all of California; three daughters, Nancy, Belinda and Deanna, all of Garner; and four brothers, Maynard Smith of Algona, James of Los Angeles, Gary of Richmond, Texas and Michael Friesenborg of Corwith.

Amy H. Hagen, 99, of Forest City, died on Sunday, May 5, 2002, at the Lake Mills Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., on Thursday, May 9, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City. The Rev. Lee Laaveg will officiate. Burial will be in the Brush Point Cemetery in Hanlontown. Visitation is from 4-7:00 p.m., today, Wednesday, May 8, at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home in Forest City.

Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Agnes Hagen of Fort Dodge; and a grandson, Denis Hagen of Wheaton, Illinois.

Joan Whitehurst, 63

May 15, 2002

Joan E. Whitehurst, 63, of Ventura, died on Tuesday, May 7, 2002, at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Memorial services were held on Saturday, May 11, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel in Clear Lake. The Rev. Mark Doeble officiated. As to her wishes, her body was cremated.

Survivors include her husband, Jim Whitehurst of Ventura; three children, Patty Bethke of Cottonwood, Arizona, Joel Whitehurst and his wife, Milissa of Hastings, Minnesota and Julie Whitehurst-Smith and her husband, Bob of Ft. Dodge; six grandchildren, Chrystal Antosch, Rick Antosch, Hillary Whitehurst, Hailey Whitehurst, Brett Whitehurst and Marissa Smith; one great-grandchild, Gabriel Antosch; sister, June Norfrey of Merrimack, New Hampshire; brother Mike Thompson of Mason City; and several nieces and nephews.

Wilna B. Oleson, 94

May 8, 2002

Memorial services for Wilna B. Oleson, 94, a resident of the Atria Martinez Assisted Living in Augusta, Georgia, will be held at 1:30 p.m., today, Wednesday, May 8, at the Forest City United Methodist Church. She died on Thursday, December 20, 2001, at the Doctor's Hospital in Augusta. The Rev. Gary Marzolf will officiate. Burial will be in the Madison Township Cemetery in Forest City. Visitation was set for Tuesday, May 7, from 6-7:00 p.m., at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home in Forest City.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Donald (Beverly) Steiff of Belvedere, South Carolina; on son, Carroll "Ole" Oleson of Marshalltown; their spouses; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Earl Christenson, 84, of Forest City, died on Tuesday, May 14, 2002, at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 18, at the Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Kiester, Minnesota. The Reverends Dani Jo Ninke-Greaver and Lee Laaveg officiated. Burial was in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, with the Petersen Lund Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Robert V. Haan, 86, of Garner, died on Wednesday, May 15, 2002, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 18, at the St. Boniface Catholic Church. The Rev. Michael Schueller officiated. Lector was Mildred Young.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Colina of Garner; daughters, Roberta Speer of Polk City and Delores Jones and her husband, Greg of Mason City; sons, Richard Haan and his wife, Gloria of Kimberling City, Missouri, Ralph Haan and his wife, Rita of Eden Valley, Minnesota and Dennis Haan and his wife, Irene of Eden Valley, Minnesota; five granddaughters; six grandsons; 18 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Constance (Connie) Urgo of New Brighton, Minnesota and Jeanette (Janie) Schleusner and her husband, Bernard of North Branch, Minnesota; a brother-in-law, Walter Bartozek of Barefoot Bay, Florida; and many nieces and nephews.

Herman C. Janssen, 94, of Manson, died on Tuesday, May 21, 2002, at the Lake Mills Care Center.

Funeral services were held on Monday, June 3, at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Joice. The Rev. Bill Peters officiated. Burial was in the Concordia Cemetery, Joice, with the Mittelstadt Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.
