Lester J. Groe, 82, of Lake Mills, died on Monday, April 1, 2002, at the St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.

Funeral services were held on Friday, April 5, at the Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills. The Reverends Roger Dykstra and Kevin Mackey officiated. Burial will be in the Salem Memorial Cemetery in Lake Mills at a later date. Military rites conducted by the Lake Mills Otto/Chose Post 235.

Survivors include his wife, Lovenea of Lake Mills; two sons, Harold Groe of Peoria Heights, Illinois and Loren Groe and his wife, Tania of Hays, Kansas; four grandchildren, Michael, Joseph, Rachel and Alessandia; three brothers, Raymond and his wife, Evelyn of Lake Mills, Noreen and his wife, Gladys of Northwood and Dennis of Des Moines; five sisters, Carol Willand of Joice, Shirley and her husband, Dale Holstad of Clear Lake, Marge and her husband, Roy Myhr of Ocala, Florida, Jean and her husband, Sam Wilson of Bricelyn, Minnesota and Irene McDowell and her friend, Merle Scovel of Des Moines; one sister-in-law, Helen Groe of Lake Mills; along with several nieces and nephews.

Harold A. Eisenhauer, 83, of Buffalo Center, died on Monday, April 1, 2002, at the Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo Center.

Funeral services were held on Friday, April 5, at the First Congregational Church in Buffalo Center. The Rev. David Langer officiated.

Survivors include his wife of almost 59 years, Pauline of Buffalo Center; five children, Royce Eisenhauer and his wife, Carolyn of Lakewood, New York, Sharon and her husband, John Giesman of Buffalo Center, Rodney Eisenhauer and his wife, Linda of Appleton, Wisconsin, Steven Eisenhauer and his wife, Heidi of Rochester, Minnesota and Bruce Eisenhauer and his wife, Lynn of Evans, Colorado; 10 grandchildren, Jeffrey Giesman and his wife, Vanessa, Amy Eisenhauer, David Eisenhauer, Edward Giesman, Eric Eisenhauer, Tina Eisenhauer, Adam Eisenhauer, Tara Eisenhauer, Cynthia Giesman and Samantha Eisenhauer; one great-grandson, Hayes Eisenhauer; one brother, Jack Eisenhauer; and four sisters, Ann Abels, Cora Abels, Velma Eisenhauer and Dorothy Caltvedt, all of Buffalo Center.

Wanetta "Nete" B. Behrends, 83, of Belmond, died on Tuesday, April 2, 2002, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, April 7, at the Belmond United Methodist Church. The Rev. Mike Druhl officiated. Burial was in the Belmond Cemetery. The Dugger Ewing Funeral Home in Belmond was in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include her two sons, Larry Behrends and his wife, Debra of Crystal Lake and Leon Behrends and his wife, Rhea of Forest City; seven grandchildren, Lisa, Marc, Sara, Greg, Brandi, Michael and Kristin; and five great-grandchildren.

Fred (Fritz) Ganz, 88, of Little Canada, Minnesota, died on Tuesday, April 2, 2002, at the Rose of Sharon Manor in Roseville.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, April 6, at the Church of Christ in Marion, Minnesota. The Rev. Dennis Ganz officiated. Inurnment was in the Grandview Memorial Gardens in Rochester, Minnesota.

Graveside services were held on Monday, April 8, at the Latorte Cemetery in Latorte, Minnesota. She was married to Harold (Rusty) Rastad who died in 1993.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., on Friday, April 19, at the Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills. The Reverends Kevin Mackey and Roger Dykstra will officiate. Burial will be in the Salem Memorial Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Lake Mills Otto/Chose Post 235. Visitation is from 5-8:00 p.m., on Thursday, at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home in Lake Mills and will continue for one hour prior to the services at the church.

Mabel E. Pederson (nee Sorensen), 100, originally from Forest City, died on Tuesday, April 9, 2002.

Funeral services were held on Friday, April 12. Burial was in the Wisconsin Memorial Park.

Survivors include her children Douglas (Melrose) Pederson and Larry (Beverly) Pederson; a brother, Merle Sorensen of Forest City; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Halvor J. Pederson.

She was one of the founding members of the Capitol Drive Lutheran Church.

Nora Wagner, 96, of Lake Mills, died on Saturday, April 13, 2002, at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., on Thursday, April 18, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Scarville. The Rev. Randy Baldwin officiated. Burial was in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Scarville.

Nora Caroline Wagner, the daughter of Louis and Inga (Kloster) Solomonson, was born on April 15, 1905 in Newton Township, near Scarville. She was baptized by Pastor Lee and confirmed in the Christian faith by Pastor Fretheim. She attended rural school.

Survivors include her son, Dean Wagner and his wife, Lois of Andover, Minnesota; two grandchildren, Kevin Wagner of Andover, Minnesota and Lori and her husband, Erik Vigesaa of Madison, Wisconsin; sisters, Ann Gunderson of Lake Mills and Alice and her husband, Carl Larsen of Fertile; sister-in-law, Elaine and her husband, Roy Bendickson of Lake Mills; along with several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Curtis K. Blank, 64, of Garner, died on Sunday, April 14, 2002, at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., today, Wednesday, April 17, at the United Methodist Church in Garner. The Rev. Kay Hooper will officiate. Music will be provided by organist, Mary Kopacek who will accompany soloist, Bernie Urich and congregational hymns. Usher will be Jim Jass. Honorary pallbearers will be his seven grandchildren.

Casket bearers will be Wayne Flaten, Dale Wood, Dennis Schaefer, Dallas Bauer, Bob Anderson and Gary Rayhons. Burial will be in the Concord Township Cemetery, with the Cataldo Funeral Home in Garner in charge of the arrangements.

He is survived by his wife, Margie of Garner; three children, Kim Fabich and her husband, Mike of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Kent Blank and his wife, Michelle of Henry, Illinois and Lee Blank and his wife, Shelley of Smithville, Missouri; seven grandchildren, Danny Fabich, Lindsey Blank, Pat Fabich, Bryant Blank, Sarah Fabich, Joey Fabich and Wesley Blank; his mother-in-law, Frances Brozik of Garner; a brother, Sylvester Blank and his wife, Emma Jean of Des Moines; three sisters, Tessie Johnson and her husband, Marvin of Garner, Eunice Johnson of Garner and Marcia Blank of Garner; and many nieces and nephews.

Ronne Lee Newlon, 56

May 1, 2002

Ronne Lee Newlon, 56, of Mesa, Arizona, died on Wednesday, April 24, 2002, at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., today, Wednesday, May 1, at the Evangelical Free Church, Clear Lake. The Rev. Chuck Smith will officiate. Graveside services will be at 3:00 p.m., in the Riverside Cemetery, Blue Earth, Minnesota. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or Pheasants Forever. The Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel in Clear Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include wife, Dawn of Mesa, Arizona; his mother, Adeline Arnt of Mesa, Arizona; three children, foster son, Steve and his wife, Gail Harris of Denison, son, Christopher Newlon and his wife, Carey of Highlands Ranch, Colorado and daughter, Carleen Whetstine and her husband, Chris of Gilbert, Arizona; one brother, Gene Newlon and his wife, Verna of Hebron, Kentucky; sister-in-law, Monica Torkelson of Garner; in-laws, Ken and Kelly Bendickson of Joice and Roger Torkelson of Forest City; eight grandchildren, Tyson Harris, Brea Nichols, Chase Harris, Cody Harris, Halle Whetstine, Noah Whetstine, Collin Newlon and Chase Newlon.

Darrel Ray Turner, 54

May 1, 2002

Darrel Ray Turner, 54, of Iola, Kansas, died on Wednesday, April 24, 2002, at his home.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 27, at the Crest High School Gymnasium in Colony, Kansas. The Reverends Ronald Thomke and Leslie Pountney officiated. Burial was in the Highland Cemetery in Iola. The Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Memorial Chapel in Iola was in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be to the College Education Fund for Elaine Turner or to Hospice.

Survivors include his wife, Lois Turner of Iola; one son, Darin Turner and his wife, Jessica of Tyler, Texas; one daughter, Elaine Turner a senior at the Iola High School; his parents, Clarence and Dorotha Turner of Iola; three sisters, Rosalee Erickson and husband, Charles of Fridley, Minnesota, Nancy Beecham and husband, Bradley of Ft. Collins, Colorado and Betty Rike and husband, Ed of Woden; a brother-in-law, Robert Eames and wife, Sharon of Forest City; and nieces, nephews and other family and friends.

Ferne N. Hirt, 96

May 1, 2002

Ferne N. Hirt, 96, of Coralville, died on Friday, April 26, 2002, at the Hawthorne Inn, following a lengthy illness.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m., today, Wednesday, May 1, at the Hawthorne Inn in Coralville. Her son-in-law, the Rev. Ray Holder will officiate.

Her wishes were to be taken to the University of Iowa Department of Anatomy for medical research following her death. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Iowa City Hospice, Johnson County Senior Center, or the Hawthorne Inn. The Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service of Iowa are in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include a daughter, Helen Holder and her husband, Reverend Ray Holder of Redmond, Oregon; a son and his wife, Frank and Pat Hirt of Akron, Ohio; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; sisters, Hazel Ingebretson of Hannibal, Missouri and Jane Lopez of Santa Barbara, California; a brother, Vernon Nyhus of Mason City; sister-in-law, Lila Nyhus of Mason City; and nieces and nephews.

Dennis Moen, 50

May 15, 2002

Dennis "Denny" Moen, 50, of Montgomery, Texas, died on Tuesday, April 30, 2002, in Houston, Texas, as a result of a horse-riding accident.

Memorial services were held on Saturday, May 4, at the Metcalf Funeral Home chapel. Bob Southard and Pastor Mike Rinehart officiated.

Survivors include his wife of 20 years, Marie Moen of Montgomery, Texas; daughters, Jody Moen and her special friend, Dave Kaduce of Clear Lake and Betsy Moen of Montgomery, Texas; one sister, JoAnn Steenblock and her husband, Leo of Forest City; his mother-in-law, Ruth Redalen of Montgomery, Texas; nieces, Amber Moen and Mickie Steenblock, both of Forest City; mentor, Tommy Lynn; and numerous other special friends.
