George Robert Nielsen, 34

December 11, 2002

George Robert Nielsen, 34, of Lake Mills, formerly of Mason City, died on Monday, December 2, 2002, as the result of a car accident near Manchester, Minnesota.

Funeral services were held on Friday, December 6, at the Center Evangelical Lutheran Church in rural Lake Mills. The Rev. Thomas Rank officiated. Burial was in the Center Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery, rural Lake Mills.

Survivors include his wife, Cheryl; three children, Emily, 11, Travis, 10, and Devlin, 8, all of Mason City; his parents, Ronald Nielsen of Crystal Lake and Rosanne Klemm and husband, Paul of rural Scarville; brothers, David Nielsen and his wife, Marie of Ledyard and John Nielsen and his fiancée, Rhonda Miller of Rockford; five nieces and nephews; maternal grandmother, Elna Hylland of Lake Mills; along with many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Boyd Orland Jordal

December 18, 2002

Boyd Orland Jordal, died on Tuesday, December 3, in Springfield, Oregon.

A memorial service will be held in Buffalo Center at a later date. 

He was born on October 10, 1917, to Edward and Ida Jordal, early residents of the Buffalo Center area. He graduated from the Buffalo Center High School in 1935.

Survivors include a brother, Vernon of Minneapolis; and 10 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Hardy; and sister, Inez Jordal Larson.

Joy Ione Carson, 89

December 11, 2002

Joy Ione Carson, 89, of Forest City, died on Thursday, December 5, 2002, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City. 

Funeral services were held on Monday, December 9, at the Forest City United Methodist Church. The Rev. Gary Marzolf officiated. Burial was in the Oakland Cemetery in Forest City, with the Petersen Lund Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Arlo; sisters, Merna Kobbervig of Princeton, Minnesota and Margaret Jane Keil of Thompson; two sons, Robert and his wife, Margaret of Springfield, Illinois and Ronald of Ames; three granddaughters, Cassandra Carson of Cary, North Carolina, Emily Carson of Springfield and Chloe Carson of Ames; and a step-granddaughter, Sara Griffith of Oregon.

Iola Gray Steffensen, 81, of Buffalo Center, died on Friday, December 6, 2002.

Funeral services were held on Monday, December 9, at the First Reformed Church in Buffalo Center. The Rev. Bill Peake officiated. Organist was Marlene Krull. Special music was provided by Marilyn Balvance and Diana Kramersmeier. Casket bearers were Gary Meinders, Larry Meinders, Keith Huesman, Denny Meinders, Mark Meinders and Larry Gray. Burial was in the Ramsey Reformed Cemetery, Titonka, with the Winter Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include her husband, Cecil Steffensen; her children, Ardell and his wife, Becky of Moravia, Roger of Clear Lake, Karen and her husband, Steve Evenson of Algona, Mike and his wife, Colleen of Folsom, California and Linda and her husband, Ron Abels of Thompson; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three brothers, Alvin Meinders and his wife, Jo, Wilbert Meinders and his wife, Gert and Jim Meinders, all of Buffalo Center; a sister, Marie Nuehring of Garner; a sister-in-law, Katherine Meinders of Spencer, Wisconsin; and by a host of relatives and friends.

Bernard George Schmidt, 78, died on Friday, December 6, 2002, at the Good Shepherd Care Center in Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Monday, December 9, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural Titonka. The Rev. Arlen Lloyd officiated. Music was provided by Bruce Wubben, soloist and organist, Anita Eden. Casket bearers were Jesse Colson, Jerry Rurup, Arlin Dirksen, Bob Schmidt, Dan Rurup, Randy Formanek and Myron Helmers. Burial was in the Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Titonka, with the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home in Titonka in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include his children, Dennis of Forest City, Vivian Schmidt of Bemidji, Minnesota, Brenda Colson and husband, Roger of Rockwell and LeAlan of Woden; five grandchildren, Mark Johnson, Justin Johnson, Lisa Johnson, Amy Colson and fiancée, Kevin Shackleford and Jesse Colson; and a sister, Marjorie Follman and husband, LaVerl of Titonka.

A Memorial Funeral Mass for Elsie (Gelner) Nelson, formerly of Crystal Lake and Forest City, of Tucson, Arizona, will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, December 7, at the St. James Catholic Church in Forest City.

She died on Saturday, September 28, 2002, at her home, with her family by her side. Her body was donated to science per her request.

Olga Ouverson, 80, of Hanlontown, died on Monday, December 9, 2002, at the Muse Norris Hospice Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, December 14, at the Church of Christ in Fertile. Burial was in the Grant Center Cemetery, rural Clear Lake, with the Petersen Lund Funeral Home in Forest City in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include her husband, Francis; three children, Craig Ouverson of Hanlontown, Joyce Hagen and husband, Leon of Hanlontown and Dr. Richard Ouverson and wife, Dr. Anna Ouverson of Madison, South Dakota; five grandchildren, John Ouverson and wife, Sara of Overland Park, Kansas, Dr. Bill Ouverson of Madison, South Dakota, Christopher Hagen of Joice, Eric Hagen of Okinawa, Japan and Mike Hagen of Hanlontown; two great-great-grandchildren, Lydia and Nicholas Ouverson of Overland Park, Kansas; two sisters, Evelyn Johnson of Mason City and Elvira Olson and husband, Russell of Fairfax; two sisters-in-law, Silence Johnson of Fertile and Marian Mulder of Slayton, Minnesota; a brother-in-law, Loris Scobee of Fertile.

Dale E. Hyde, 70

December 18, 2002

Dale E. Hyde, 70, of Fertile, died on Monday, December 9, 2002, at his home.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, December 12, at the Church of Christ in Fertile. The Reverends Curt Gallmeyer and Dennis Ganz officiated. Burial was in the Clear Lake Cemetery, with military honors presented by the Clear Lake V.F.W. The Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel in Clear Lake was in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include his six children, Delia Hyde of Laguna Beach, California, Donna Reed and her husband, Doug of Niceville, Florida, Pat Hyde of Fertile, June Lackore and her husband, Kevin of Forest City, Jeff Hyde of Alcova, Wyoming and Jamie Hyde of Forest City; seven grandchildren, Tiffany, Jennifer and Stephanie Gisel, of Pensacola, Florida, Vanessa Valadez of Laguna Beach, California, Anthony and Ashley Lackore of Forest City and Damien Hyde of Forest City; a sister, Wilma Knop and her husband, Ron of Ventura; along with several nieces and nephews.

A prayer service was held on Thursday, December 12, at the Ewing Funeral Chapel in Britt. Dr. John Meyer officiated. Inurnment was in the Evergreen Cemetery in Britt.

Survivors include his son, Jerry of Britt; two granddaughters, Shelia Verts and her husband, Drew of Las Vegas, Nevada and Linda Anderson of Ocean Side, California; and one sister, Betty Sawyer of Clear Lake.

Celestine Sally J. Malek, 69, of Britt, died on Saturday, December 14, 2002, at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., today Wednesday, December 18, at the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan. Fr. Michael Schueller will officiate. Lector will be James Malek and altar servers will be Andrew and Matthew Urich. Music will be provided by organist, Mary Kopacek who will accompany the church choir.

Ushers will be George Tusha, Leo Wellik and Anton Trca. Casket bearers will be Kenneth Paca, Tom Zrostlik, Gary Hejlik, Robert Malek, Brad Connor and Daniel Malek. Burial will be in the St. Johns Catholic Cemetery in Duncan, with the Cataldo Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include her husband, Bill of Britt; three children, Daniel Malek of Wilton, New Hampshire and his three daughters, Rebecca, Elizabeth and Catherine, James Malek and his wife, Mette of Sioux City and their three children, Melinda, Angela and Michael and Rosanne Malek of Urbandale; her mother-in-law, Lillian Malek of Britt; two brothers, John Buzicky and his wife, Elaine of Britt and Joseph Buzicky of Tempe, Arizona.

Constance Anderson, 75, of Forest City, died on Sunday, December 22, 2002, at her home.

Jeffrey C. Sommer, 33, of Forest City, died on Tuesday, December 31, 2002, as a result of injuries sustained in an auto accident near Forest City. 

Funeral services were held on Monday, January 6, 2003, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City. The Rev. Lee Laaveg officiated. Burial was in the Madison Township Cemetery in Forest City, with the Petersen Lund Funeral Home in Forest City in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include his mother, Ora Mae Sommer of Forest City; his sister, June Fretheim and her husband, Wes and their sons, Justin and Zack, all of Decorah; three uncles, Harold Sommer and wife, Mary of Arcadia, Florida, Alvin Sommer of Cresco and Marvin Sommer of Granger; two aunts, Charlene Knutson of Cresco and Norrine McKinstry of Rapids City, South Dakota; along with several cousins.

New Year's Accident Claims One

January 15, 2003

A Forest City man was killed in a single-car accident Tuesday night on the River Road south of town.

Jeffery Sommer, 33, of Forest City, was driving northbound in a 2002 Nissan pickup on Hancock County Road R-70 and failed to negotiate a curve in the road. The vehicle entered the north ditch and rolled, killing Sommer.

Rebecca Bartleson and Brett West, both of Forest City, were passengers in Sommer's vehicle. Bartleson was treated at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, then airlifted to the Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, where she was first listed in critical condition but later upgraded to fair condition.

West was also taken to Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, where he was listed in fair condition.

The accident is under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol. Assisting on the scene were the Forest City Fire Department, Forest City Ambulance, Forest City Police Department, the Hancock County Sheriff's Department and the Winnebago County Sheriff's Department.
