New Year's Accident Claims One
January 15, 2003
A Forest City man was killed in a single-car accident Tuesday night on the River Road south of town.
Jeffery Sommer, 33, of Forest City, was driving northbound in a 2002 Nissan pickup on Hancock County Road R-70 and failed to negotiate a curve in the road. The vehicle entered the north ditch and rolled, killing Sommer.
Rebecca Bartleson and Brett West, both of Forest City, were passengers in Sommer's vehicle. Bartleson was treated at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, then airlifted to the Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, where she was first listed in critical condition but later upgraded to fair condition.
West was also taken to Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, where he was listed in fair condition.
The accident is under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol. Assisting on the scene were the Forest City Fire Department, Forest City Ambulance, Forest City Police Department, the Hancock County Sheriff's Department and the Winnebago County Sheriff's Department.
