Alice Julia Medlang, 98, of Buffalo Center, died on Tuesday, July 2, 2002, at the Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo Center.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, July 9, at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church at Buffalo Center. The Rev. Dr. Mary Sacco officiated.

Survivors include her daughter, Delores Steffensen of Buffalo Center; three sons, Vernell and his wife, Bonnie of Fort Dodge, Garry of Cheraw, South Carolina and Wayne and his wife, Jill of Cedar Rapids; 18 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Jason Lee Johnson, 27

July 10, 2002

Jason Lee Johnson, 27, of Kiester, Minnesota, died on Thursday, July 4, 2002, at the Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota, from complications of leukemia.

Funeral services were held on Monday, July 8, at the Bricelyn Lutheran Church in Bricelyn, Minnesota. The Rev. Dani Jo Ninki-Greaver officiated. Burial will take place at a later date. Arrangements were by made by the Bruss-Heitner Funeral Home in Bricelyn.

Survivors include his wife, Melissa Johnson of Kiester, Minnesota; three children, Taylor, Nicholas and Jace Johnson of Kiester; his parents, Dennis and Rhonda Johnson of Bricelyn; two brothers, Jeremy Johnson of Forest City and Jesse Johnson of Bricelyn; a nephew, Dakota Johnson of Forest City; his father-in-law, Phillip Petersen of Albert Lea, Minnesota; his mother-in-law, Sue Kiel of Grand Marais, Minnesota; two sisters-in-law, Carrie and Amie Petersen of Albert Lea; one brother-in-law, John Kiel of Grand Marais; his grandparents-in-law, Kenneth Petersen of Albert Lea, Joanne Petersen of Albert Lea and Albert and Dean Heiny of Lake Mills; along with numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Martha (Holstad) Charlson, 85, of Lake Mills, died on Monday, July 8, 2002, at the Lake Mills Care Center.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 11, at the Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills. The Reverends Kevin Mackey and Roger Dykstra officiated. Burial was in the Salem Memorial Cemetery in Lake Mills.

Survivors include her husband, Joseph Charlson of Lake Mills; her children, Dave Holstad and his wife, Judy of Lake Mills, Eileen Taylor and her husband, Charles of Ventura, Harlan Charlson of Leland, Jerry W. Harry C. Fosse, 91, of Forest City, died on Tuesday, July 9, 2002, at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 13, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City. The Rev. Lee Laaveg officiated. Burial was in the Pilot Knob Lutheran Cemetery, rural Forest City, with the Petersen Lund Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include a son and his wife, Douglas and Carol Fosse of Grand Forks, North Dakota; two daughters, Mary Schaefer and her husband, Roger and Joan Swanson, all of Forest City; 11 grandchildren, Valerie Dillon, Randy, Darrell, Jeffrey and Kevin Swanson, Lori Williams, David, Tim and Paul Schaefer, Kara Lian and Chris Fosse; 30 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Alvada Helvick of Forest City.

Anna M. Methus, 78, of Rogers, Arkansas, died on Wednesday, July 10, 2002, at her home.

Memorial services were held recently at the Peace Lutheran Church. The Rev. Jane Mar officiated. Burial will be at a later date in the National Cemetery at Fayetteville, Arkansas. Arrangements were made by the Callison-Lough Funeral Services in Rogers.

Survivors include her husband, Gordon; one daughter, Bobbie Bliss of Marietta, Georgia; one brother, Norman Rye of Fertile; and one grandson, Adam Bliss.

Christine J. Jenson, 95, of Lake Mills, died on Friday, July 12, 2002, at the Lake Mills Care Center.

Funeral services were held on Monday, July 15, at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Joice. The Rev. Bill Peters officiated.

Survivors include five grandchildren, DeVon (Kathryn) Medlang, Linda Kettner, Joyce (Ron) Dammer, Marta (Wayne) Rusley-Parker and David Rusley; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; her daughter-in-law, Beatrice Young; her son-in-law, Vernell Medlang; four step-children, Maynard (Etta) Jenson, Avis (Wilbur) Craw, Beverly (Vivian) Lee and Ethel (Tom) Grundahl; 12 step-grandchildren; and 21 step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; her daughter, Clarice Medlang; her son, Cecil Rusley; her granddaughter, Roxanne Medlang; three sisters, Paula Jacobson, Nettie Fjone and Clara Aamodt; and two brothers, Peter Peterson and Ole Peterson.

John W. Kester, 93, formerly of Forest City, residing in Marshalltown, died on Monday, July 15, 2002, at the MMSC in Marshalltown.

Funeral services were held on Monday, July 22, at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home in Forest City. The Rev. Gary Marzolf officiated. Burial was in the Madison Township Cemetery in Forest City.

Pansy S. Jones, 82, of Fertile, died on Tuesday, July 16, 2002, at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Deloris A. Banken, 78, of Forest City, died on Saturday, July 20, 2002, at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., today, Wednesday, July 24, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City. The Rev. Lee Laaveg will officiate. Burial will be in the Elk Creek Cemetery in rural Kensett, with the Petersen Lund Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include her husband, Richard of Forest City; two daughters, Kathy and her husband, Rev. Forest City woman killed in an accident Saturday

July 24, 2002

Deloris Banken, 78, of Forest City, died on Saturday, when the car in which she was a passenger was involved in a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of West J Street and North 8th Street.

Banken was a passenger in a car owned by Ruth Olson, 90, which was being driven by Eleanor Lovik, 77, both of Forest City. Banken was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle, according to the Iowa State Patrol. She was taken to Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa by the Forest City Ambulance Service, where she died a short time later.

The 1999 Mercury Sable driven by Lovik was northbound on West 8th Street and was struck in the left rear side by a 2000 Chevrolet pickup driven by Craig Monson, 40, Forest City. Banken, who was not wearing a seat belt was ejected from the vehicle as the car was spun 270 degrees by the impact. Lovik, Olson and Monson were all wearing seat belts, according to the accident report.

Lovik and Olson were both treated and released. Monson's pickup sustained $2,000 damage and was released at the scene. Olson's car had an estimated $7,000 damage and was towed from the scene.

Lovik has been cited for failure to yield the right of way at a yield sign, according to the Iowa Highway Patrol.

The accident was called in at 7:43 a.m., Saturday. Also assisting on the scene were the Forest City Police Department and the Winnebago County Sheriff's Office.

Alvina V. Bruns, 101, of Fertile, died on Saturday, July 20, 2002, at the Manly Care Center.

Funeral services were held on Monday, July 22, at the First Baptist Church in Forest City. The Rev. George Kalb officiated.

Survivors include her son and his wife, David and Lola Bruns of Fertile; a brother, Henry Furst of Algona; five grandchildren, Lewellyn and wife, Sue of Forest City, Warren and wife, Beverly of Fertile, Dwight and wife, Kay of Fertile, Sandra and husband, Richard of Clear Lake and Richard and wife, Joely of Fertile; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

July 24, 2002

Myrtle Thompson, 94, of Lake Mills, died on Sunday, July 21, 2002, at the Lake Mills Care Center, where she had been a resident since August 2000.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Thursday, July 25, at the Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills. The Reverends Roger Dykstra and Kevin Mackey will officiate. Burial will be in the Salem Memorial Cemetery, Lake Mills. Visitation is from 5-8:00 p.m., on Wednesday, at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home in Lake Mills and again one hour before the services at the church.

Survivors include four sisters, Hazel Gudmonson of Albert Lea, Minnesota, Julia Levad of Lake Mills, Volborg Bothun of Rochester, Minnesota and Eleanor Steffenson of Anoka, Minnesota; along with several nieces and nephews.

Elizabeth A. Dirksen, 63, of Garner, died on Thursday, July 25, 2002, at her home surrounded with love by her family.

Funeral services were held on Monday, July 29, at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel in Mason City. The Rev. Albert Snyder of the Calvary Baptist Church in Forest City officiated. Burial was in the Elmwood Cemetery in Mason City.

Survivors include her mother, Florence Graff of Mason City; six children, Kenneth Dirksen of Des Moines, Keith Dirksen and his wife, Angel of Boone, Kurt Dirksen of Klemme, Kevin Dirksen of Garner, Kelly Dirksen and his wife, Kim of Garner and Kathy Dirksen of Woden; fifteen grandchildren, Samantha, Tyler, Danielle, Stacey, Benjamin, Gabrielle Elizabeth, Cody, Kory, Christopher, Kristopher, Paul, Taylor, Caleb, Toni and Tina; four great-grandchildren, Mikayla, Autumn Lee, Gaven and Autumn Ann; eight brothers and sisters, Geraldine Mikelson of Garner, Dolly Skarpness of Mason City, Carol Mathahs and her husband, John of Thompson, Rose Green of Austin, Texas, Sandra VanDenHul of Mason City, Sharon Sandell of St. Paul Park, Minnesota, Dennis Graff and his wife, Linda of Mason City and Rodney Graff and his wife, Tammy of Joice; along with several nieces and nephews.

Stanley N. Boman, 88, of Forest City, died on Tuesday, July 30, 2002, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, August 3, at the First Baptist Church in Forest City. The Rev. A. Damberg officiated. Music was provided by organist, Carol Tweeten who accompanied congregational hymns. Special music was provided by pianist, Lorie Fahs, Kelly Faust and Steve Fahs, with a trumpet duet and a vocal duet by James and Laurann Anderson. Ushers were Dana and Matthew Swanson.

Casket bearers were Bradley Waldemar, Todd Waldemar, Jeffrey Boman, MIchael Boman, Martin Wilson, Lonnie Wilson, Wesley Boman and Gerald Boman. Burial was in the First Baptist Cemetery, with the Petersen Lund Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Jessica O. Gillette, 79, of Lafayette, Wisconsin, died on Tuesday, July 30, 2002, at Lakeside North Nursing and Rehabilitation in Chippewa Falls, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral services were held on Monday, August 5, in the Mae Rowan Ecumenical Center at Lakeside Nursing and Rehabilitation in Chippewa Falls. The Rev. Gerald Mann of Lakeside Nursing and Rehabilitation officiated, assisted by Gillette's cousin, the Rev. Russ Osnes of Forest City and Rev. Barry Boyer of the First Presbyterian Church. Burial was in the Prairie View Cemetery at Hallie, Wisconsin, with the Pederson-Voker Funeral Chapel in Chippewa Falls in charge of the arrangement.

Survivors include two children, Lynne (Ron) Krueger of Chippewa Falls and Scott (Cindy) Gillette of Eau Claire, Wisconsin; two brothers, Robert (Audrey) Olson of Tucson, Arizona and Bennie (Cathy) Olson of Santa Barbara, California; five grandchildren, Jennifer (Jeremy) Weigold of Chippewa Falls, Joyce (Ryan) Olson of Chippewa Falls, Kathryn (fiancée, Ben Fornear) Krueger of Duluth, Minnesota, Melissa (Rev. Steve) Squires of Lowell, Massachusetts and Tim Gillette of Eau Claire; three great-grandchildren, Gage Birkel, Chase Weigold and Jonah Olson; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Olson of Forest City and Beverly Olson of Cedar Rapids; along with nieces, nephews and other relatives and dear friends.
