Forest City woman killed in an accident Saturday
July 24, 2002
Deloris Banken, 78, of Forest City, died on Saturday, when the car in which she was a passenger was involved in a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of West J Street and North 8th Street.
Banken was a passenger in a car owned by Ruth Olson, 90, which was being driven by Eleanor Lovik, 77, both of Forest City. Banken was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle, according to the Iowa State Patrol. She was taken to Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa by the Forest City Ambulance Service, where she died a short time later.
The 1999 Mercury Sable driven by Lovik was northbound on West 8th Street and was struck in the left rear side by a 2000 Chevrolet pickup driven by Craig Monson, 40, Forest City. Banken, who was not wearing a seat belt was ejected from the vehicle as the car was spun 270 degrees by the impact. Lovik, Olson and Monson were all wearing seat belts, according to the accident report.
Lovik and Olson were both treated and released. Monson's pickup sustained $2,000 damage and was released at the scene. Olson's car had an estimated $7,000 damage and was towed from the scene.
Lovik has been cited for failure to yield the right of way at a yield sign, according to the Iowa Highway Patrol.
The accident was called in at 7:43 a.m., Saturday. Also assisting on the scene were the Forest City Police Department and the Winnebago County Sheriff's Office.
