Tombstone Surprises Leland
By: Roger Hughes

May 1, 2001

The city of Leland received an unexpected surprise when it had Lakeside Construction, Forest City, dig up its storm sewer. Lakeside Construction operator, Scott Lunning was back filling the hole in downtown Leland when employee Denny Ufford noticed the tombstone.

"I thought it might be a lightpole base. There were other materials like steel posts in there as well. It appeared to be a place where someone had buried a number of things. "You never know what you are going to find when you are digging. That is the first time I ever found a tombstone," Lunning said.

Long time Leland resident Robert Ambroson figures the tombstone was probably put in when the city first dug by hand the storm sewer. Ambroson called Winnebago County Treasurer Ruthie Bachman because he was sure that Halvorsen was her great-grandfather.

"I am sure that the tombstone is Norwegian. Our family plot is with an "e" on the end of the name in Leland. It was common for families to change the spelling of their name," Ambroson said. Ambroson believed that Halvorsen was buried in the West Prairie Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Bachman found in the Leland book an article her mother wrote for the centennial that indicates the tombstone is her great-grandfather's. The article states, "John Halvorsen is a native of Norway, born March 1847. He came to America in 1869 and settled in Dane County, Wisconsin, living there four years; thence to Winnebago Co., Iowa, Newton Township and located on Section 27. Mr. Halvorsen came here in moderate circumstances but has accumulated a snug home and is well fixed. He was married May 13, 1874, to Eliza Carlson, born in Norway."

The article also indicates that Halvorsen died September 4, 1891. This is only a few days off from the tombstone date.

The tombstone is behind the Legion Hall in Leland awaiting its next fate.
