FARIBAULT, MINNESOTA-Mrs. Arnold (Amy) Ray, 95, of Faribault, Minnesota, died on Wednesday, May 2, 2001, at the Faribault Care Center. 

Private funeral services were held on Friday, May 4, at the Parker Kohl Funeral Home in Faribault. The Rev. Meredith Bedker Musaus, pastor of the First English Lutheran Church in Faribault, officiated. Burial was in the Meadow Ridge Memorial Park in Faribault.

Survivors include five children, Phyllis Schwichtenberg of White Bear Lake, Minnesota, BeBe (Gaylen) Jensen of Faribault, Jack (Chick) Thurston of Forest City, Donna (Phillip) Olson of Forest City and Ronald J. (Eilys) Thurston of Coon Rapids, Minnesota; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; a sister, Pearl Soreide of Decorah; Inez Dahle of Cresco and other relatives and friends.

Marvin Elman, 75

FOREST CITY-Marvin K. Elman, 75, of Forest City, died on Wednesday, May 2, 2001.

Funeral services were held on Monday, May 7, at the Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Leland. The Rev. Dan Christensen officiated.

Survivors include his children, Diann Eisenman of Mason City, Karen Shropshire and fiancée, Frank Pehle of Litchfield, Minnesota, Peter Elman of Anaheim Hills, California and Helen Alne and husband, Larry of Forest City; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous cousins and friends.

Deborah Willig, 51

May 08, 2001

CRYSTAL LAKE-Deborah A. Willig, 51, of Crystal Lake, died on Wednesday, May 2, 2001, following a battle with cancer that began in December 1994. 

Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 5, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City. The Rev. Michelle Simonson officiated.

Survivors include her father, Glenn Willig of Grundy Center; three sisters, Diane Hart of Marshalltown, Denise and Donna Willig, both of Waterloo; two nephews; and a very close friend, Marje Peterson of Crystal Lake.

Velva Miller, 79

May 08, 2001

JOICE-Velva Bang Miller, 79, formerly of Joice, died on Saturday, May 5, 2001, at her home in Bloomington, Minnesota.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., on Thursday, May 10, at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Joice. The Rev. Gary Johnson will officiate. Burial will be in the Concordia Cemetery, rural Joice. Visitation is from 5-7:00 p.m., on Wednesday, at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home in Lake Mills.

Survivors include four children, John Bang and his wife, Kathy of Bloomington, Valois Bang of Bloomington, Janet Thompto and her husband, Ralph of Blaine, Minnesota and Ronald Bang and his wife, Denise of Red Wing, Minnesota; five grandchildren; a great-grandson; two stepsons, Dennis Miller and his wife, Sue of Rice Lake and Ron Miller and his wife, Jean of Joice and their families; a brother, Austin McClain and his wife, Kay of Waseca, Minnesota; four sisters, Eva Kluver of Britt, Beulah Brue and her husband, Ernest, Wilma Harang and her husband, Kermit and Blanche Grunhovd and her husband, Kermit, all of Lake Mills; one brother-in-law, Leonard Waage of Forest City; along with many nieces and nephews.

FOREST CITY-Margaret R. Larsen, 86, died on Saturday, May 5, 2001.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 8, at the St. James Catholic Church in Forest City. Celebrant was Rev. Craig Steimel.

Survivors include two sons and their wives, Gerald and Margaret Johnson of Mankato, Minnesota and Duane and Sharon Larsen of Chula Vista, California; three daughters and their husbands, Noreen and DeWayne Hannaman of Mankato, Beverly Schoenfeldt of Iowa Falls and DeLaine and Randy Hoeft of Forest City; a stepson and his wife, Eugene and Betty Johnson of Forest City; 10 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

TITONKA-Johanna "Jo" Sarah Frerichs, 71, of Titonka, died on Tuesday, May 8, 2001, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Friday, May 11, at the First Baptist Church in Buffalo Center. The Rev. Paul Haugen officiated.

Survivors include her husband, Albert of Titonka; her daughter, Linda Petersen and husband, Burdette of Titonka; her son, Lee and his wife, Sue of Long View, Washington; her mother, Dollie Kardoes of Titonka; two grandchildren; seven brothers and sisters, Velma Dontje and husband Arnold of Buffalo Center, Wiliam and his wife, Arlene of Stockton, Missouri, Gary of Titonka, Lavonne McVey of Tacoma, Washington, Frank and his wife, Beverly of LaGrange, Georgia, Rusty and his wife, Lanita of Titonka and Tom and his wife, Jennifer, also of Titonka; as well as many nieces and nephews.

LAKE MILLS-Dr. Robert D. Brainerd, 72, of Lake Mills, died on Thursday, May 10, 2001, at the Albert Lea Medical Center in Albert Lea, Minnesota.

Funeral services  were held on Monday, May 14, at the Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills. The Rev. Roger Dykstra officiated. Burial was in the North Lawn Cemetery, Fort Dodge, with military rites performed by the Lake Mills Otto/Chose Post 235.

Survivors include his wife, Connie Brainerd of Lake Mills; four children, Robert Brainerd Jr. of Mineral Point, Wisconsin, Heather Ingebretson of Lake Mills, Barrett Brainerd and his wife, Marilyn of Mason City and Karen Stensrude of Lake Mills; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; a brother-in-law, Richard Douglas and his wife, Arlene of Ottumwa; an aunt, "Sox" Carlson of Otho; along with nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

FOREST CITY-Obed B. Michaelson, 94, of Forest City, died on Saturday, May 12, 2001, at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.

Funeral services were held on Monday, May 14, at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home in Forest City. The Rev. Lee Laaveg officiated.

Survivors include his wife, Susan of Forest City; two daughters, Carol Sanderson and husband, Stephen of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin and Martha Plunkett and husband, Timothy of Stillwater, Minnesota; a son, Paul Michaelson and wife, Marilyn of San Carlos, California; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Agnes Thompson of Northfield, Minnesota.

NORTHWOOD-Herbert Ernest Hagen, 79, of Northwood, died on Tuesday, May 15, 2001, at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.

Funeral services were held on Friday, May 18, at the Sion Lutheran Church, rural Lake Mills. The Reverends Gary Johnson and James Cherry officiated. Burial was in the Sion Lutheran Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Bonnie of Northwood; daughters, Dawn Millard and her husband, Daniel of Fertile, Ruth Hagen of Lake Mills, Peggy Altringer and her husband, Michael of Carver, Minnesota and Margaret Harris and her husband, Jack of Slater; five grandchildren; two brothers, Lawrence Hagen and his wife, Seydell of Thornton and Richard Hagen and his wife, Judy of Albert Lea, Minnesota; several nieces and nephews and great-uncle, Carl Hagen of Lake Mills.

Graveside service for Merrill Oleson

May 15, 2001

FOREST CITY-Graveside memorial inurnment for Merrill Oleson, 64, of Forest City, will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Saturday, May 19, 2001, at the Madison Township Cemetery in Forest City. He died on December 16, 2000.

Rev. Gary Marzolf of the Forest City United Methodist Church will officiate. The Petersen Lund Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Verna L. Peterson, 70

May 22, 2001

PARADISE VALLEY, ARIZONA-Verna L. Peterson, 70, died on Saturday, May 19, 2001, in the Hospice of Arizona, following a year-long battle with lymphoma. 

A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 25, at St. Barnabas of the Desert in Paradise Valley, Arizona.

Verna L. Peterson, the daughter of Norman and Agnes Brackey, was born on September 18, 1930. She lived in the Winnebago County area most of her life. In 1993, she and her husband moved to Arizona to be close to their grandsons.

Survivors include a son, Dennis Peterson of Phoenix, Arizona; a daughter, Diane Harden; a son-in-law, Ted Harden; two grandsons; and a brother, Duane Brackey.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, who died three months ago.

The family requests memorials be sent to the American Cancer Society or to the Hospice of Arizona.

Martha B. Flugum, 101

May 22, 2001

MINNEAPOLIS-Martha B. Flugum, 101, of Ebenezer Hall in Minneapolis, died on Saturday, May 19, 2001, in Minneapolis.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Friday, May 25, at the Ebenezer Hall Chapel in Minneapolis. Burial will be in the Sunset Memorial Park. Visitation is one half hour prior to the service.

Martha B. Flugum, the daughter of Ingebrit and Marie Flugum, was born on February 17, 1900 in Forest City.

She was a member of the St. Anthony Park Lutheran Church in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Survivors include a brother, Walter Flugum and his wife, Carma of Lake Mills; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and sisters, Ida Helland, Ingeborg Galati and Edith Elvebak.

Edwin Earnest Christ, 79

May 22, 2001

LELAND-A memorial and interment service for Edwin Earnest Christ, 79, of Iowa City, will be held on Sunday, June 3, 2001, at the Forest Home Cemetery, Leland. Edwin died on Tuesday, January 2, 2001, at his home following a short illness. 

Those wishing to attend the service are asked to meet at 2:00 p.m., at the Leland Community Center.

Survivors include two sons, David Christ of Iowa City and Jonathan Christ of Hickory, North Carolina; a daughter, Carolyn Goddard of North Liberty; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Frances Rivero of Sanford, Florida and Leona Anderson of California.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday, May 30, at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Anamosa. The Rev. Jerry Egel will officiate. Burial will be in the Oakwood Cemetery, Monticello. Friends may call from 4-8:00 p.m., on Tuesday, at the Goettsch Funeral Home in Anamosa.

FOREST CITY-Ruth Pryor, 87, of Forest City, died on Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.

Her body was cremated and private services will be held at a later date. The Petersen Lund Funeral Home was entrusted with the arrangements.

Survivors include a brother, Verne and his wife, Vera of Minden; four nephews, including Raymond Beebe of Forest City; and two nieces.

LITTLE CANADA, MINNESOTA-Fred "Buzz" Ganz, 60, of Little Canada, Minnesota, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at his home.

Memorial services were held on Saturday, June 2, at the Coon Rapids Christian Church in Coon Rapids, Minnesota. A private graveside service will be held on Saturday, July 7, in the Grandview Memorial Gardens in Rochester, Minnesota.

Survivors include his daughters, Teri Morse and her husband, Todd of Moorhead, Minnesota and Lori Alamo and her husband, Jose of Coon Rapids; five grandchildren; his parents, Fred and Margery Ganz of Little Canada; two brothers, Dennis Ganz and his wife, Sharon of Fertile and Bob Ganz and his wife, Diane of Phoenix, Arizona; three sisters, Gwen Riggin and her husband, Don of Milbank, South Dakota, Kathy Termeer and her husband, Hank of Powell, Ohio and Joyce Krystofiak and her husband, Joe of Shoreview, Minnesota.

James Roalson, 77

RAPID CITY, SOUTH DAKOTA-James E. Roalson, 77, died on Thursday, February 22, 2001, in Rapid City, South Dakota, after a prolonged stay at the Colonial Manor in Custer, South Dakota.

A memorial service was held at the Isburg-McColley's Chapel in Custer, on Sunday, March 11. Mr. Roalson's ashes will be buried in Forest City in a graveside service on Sunday, June 10, at 1:00 p.m. A memorial has been established in his name for the Custer Humane Society, Custer, South Dakota.

Survivors include his sister, Jean (Robert) Stephenson of Earp, California; four nephews; three nieces; and a sister-in-law, Louise Roalson of Cedar Rapids.
