Donal Halvorson
St. Ansgar, IA—Donal Richard Halvorson,88, of St. Ansgar, well-known
banker
and descendant of 3 pioneer families died Tuesday, September 28, 2010 at
the Good Samaritan Society Center, St. Ansgar. Memorial services were
held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, October 3, 2010 at St. Ansgar United
Methodist Church with Rev. Peter Chang officiating. Burial was in St.
Ansgar Cemetery.
Donal was born October 4, 1922, in Osage, Iowa and
was the son of Albert and
Gertrude (Sheehan) Halvorson. His ancestors came to this area from
Norway and
Ireland, namely John Halvorson, Ingeborg Nelson, and Daniel Sheehan.
He was confirmed into the Methodist Church, St. Ansgar, Iowa.
Donal graduated from St. Ansgar High School, class of 1940, where he
was a
talented athlete. He appreciated the quote from Harry S. Truman, “The C
students
run the world.” He attended and played basketball for Iowa State
University, Stout University and Gustavus dolphus College.
He was enlisted with the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corp while
attending these schools. His marriage to Elizabeth Rasmussen of
Sheboygan, WI, took place August 27,
1944, in Wauwatosa, WI, the chapel of the Methodist Church.
After serving with the U.S. Navy during World War II, he and his wife
returned to St. Ansgar. In 1946, he joined the staff of the St. Ansgar
Citizens State Bank where his father, Albert, was president. Both his
father and uncle, Henry
Halvorson, had previously been employed with Clear Lake, Iowa banks.
Donal served as an officer, director and president of the St. Ansgar
State Bank
for 64 years. He also served as a Director for the Iowa Independent
Bankers Association, as well as a director of L.R. Falk Construction Co.
He was a 63 year member of the American Legion. Donal left his mark
on the
community of St. Ansgar. He lived by the slogan “Do for St. Ansgar.”
He was exceedingly proud to be
called a Saint, and was instrumental in supporting St. Ansgar in
hundreds of
ways, from softball lights to a new medical clinic, to scholarships for
local graduates, to helping friends in any way he could. Along with
his parents, Mr. Halvorson was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth,
a brother John Albert, and sister, Louise Tellefson.
Survivors include daughter Cathleen (Jack) Carruthers of Ft. Myers,
FL; son Timothy Donal (Sally) who is a third-generation banker in the
St. Ansgar State Bank; sister Laura (Edward) Jobe of Indian Wells, CA;
four grandchildren, Melissa
(Chris) Tomasso of Sarasota, FL; J.D. (Tricia) Woolm of Orlando, FL;
Megan (Luke)
Porisch of Cedar Rapids, IA; Erin (Seth) Tjaden of Colorado Springs, CO;
plus several nieces and nephews. He was thrilled and proud to boast of
six great-grandchildren; Jared and Malia
Tomasson, Amelia and Paulina Porisch, Kellen and Eva Woolm all of whom
he
“teased with delight” with a twinkle in his eye. He will be terribly
missed by his loving family and many friends. In lieu of flowers, the
family would appreciate donations to the “St. Ansgar
Angel Foundation,” which contributes to special St. Ansgar area projects
or the
“St. Ansgar Community School Legacy Fund” which enriches the educational
experience for the students of the St. Ansgar Community School District.

Phyllis E. Kittleson
St. Ansgar, IA—Phyllis E. Kittleson, 85, of St. Ansgar, died Sunday,
October 17,
2010 at Good Samaritan Center, St. Ansgar. Funeral services were held at
2:00
PM on Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at First Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar
with Rev. Robert Porisch officiating.
Burial was in First Lutheran Cemetery, St. Ansgar.
Phyllis E. Kittleson was born January 17, 1925 to Elmer and Martha (Poschula)
Tollefson in Winneshiek County, Iowa. On October 7, 1955 she married
Melvin
(Bob) Kittleson in Decorah, IA. Together they ran Farmer’s Produce for
many
years in St. Ansgar. She was a member of First Lutheran Church, St.
Ansgar, and
loved to raise flowers.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother Paul
and
granddaughter Karyn Leeman.
Phyllis is survived by her children Dale of St. Ansgar, David (Vicki)
of St. Ansgar,
Sherry (Mark) Ryan of Austin, MN, and Shirley (Dale) Leeman of
Clarksgrove,
MN; three sisters Helen Ringham of Northwood, Lois (Don) Purcell of
Arizona, and Mary Lou Ellingson of Decorah, IA; eight grandchildren and
nine great-grandchildren.
Kenneth N. Theobald
Stacyville,
IA--Kenneth Nicholas Theobald,69, of Stacyville, died October 19,
2010 at Mitchell County Regional Health Center, Osage, IA at 3:00 PM.
Memorial services were held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, October 23, 2010
at Visitation Catholic Church, Stacyville, with Rev. John Moser
officiating. Burial
was at a later date in Visitation Cemetery, Stacyville.
Kenneth Nicholas Theobald was born on December 5, 1940, in Stacyville,
Iowa, the son of Carl and Irma (Durben) Theobald.
Ken graduated from Visitation High School in 1959. He was a member of
the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts. His favorite past times growing up
included playing sports, fishing, driving, and spending time with
friends. After high school,
Ken enlisted in the Army. He attended basic training at Fort Hood,
Texas, and
then spent 19 months stationed in Fort Richardson, Alaska, as a member
of the
23rd Battle Group, 2nd Armored Division. After being discharged from the
Army, Ken returned to Stacyville to join his dad, Carl, and brother,
Glen, in the
family business.
Ken worked in parts and sales at Theobald Implement Company until
1985.
At that time, Ken and his son, Todd, started Theobald Custom
Manufacturing,
where Ken worked until his retirement in 2005. During his time in sales,
Ken told
many stories, traveled many miles, and met hundreds of great people,
many of whom he kept in touch with throughout his lifetime.
Ken loved fishing, hunting, playing cards, making others laugh,
traveling, and
spending time with his family. Later in life, Ken enjoyed family
gatherings, visits with friends, tending to his flowers in the backyard,
feeding the birds, and time spent on the Gulf Coast.
Ken met Ann Hebert of Caspian, Michigan, at St. Mary’s School of
Nursing in
Rochester, Minnesota, and the two were married on July 17, 1965, at St.
Cecelia’s
Church in Caspian, Michigan.
Ken and Ann have four children: Todd (Julie) Theobald of Osceola,
Wisconsin;
Lynn (Phil) Baldus of St. Ansgar, Iowa; Amy(Chris) May of Parkersburg,
Iowa; and Jill (Rusty) Theobald of Denver, Iowa. Christel (Sebastian)
Wassmann of Göttingen, Germany, is another special member of the family.
Grandchildren include Chantal Wilson, Theo and Kira Baldus, C.J. and
Nicole
May, and Austin and Jaylee Fromm and one great-granddaughter, Savannah
Wilson.
Ken is survived by his sister, Helen Hemann, of Austin, Minnesota,
and his
brothers Glen Theobald of Lake City, Minnesota, and Roger Theobald of
Elkhorn,
Nebraska. Ken also has many beloved nieces and nephews.
Ken was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Irma Theobald, his
inlaws,
Dominic and Lorraine Hebert, his brothers, Robert and Roy Theobald, and
his
brother-in-law, Willie Hemann.
Through his death, Ken will continue to help othersthrough the
donation of his
body to the Mayo Clinic. His laughter and smile will be greatly missed.
Verva Michaels
St.
Ansgar, IA--Verva G. Michaels, 83, of St. Ansgar died Thursday, October
21,
2010 at St. Ansgar Good Samaritan Center, St. Ansgar.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, October 26,
2010 at
First Lutheran Church, St.Ansgar with Rev. Robert Porisch officiating.
Burial
will be in First Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Monday,
October
25, 2010 from 4:00-7:00 PM at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, 207 S.
School Street, St. Ansgar.
Verva Grace Michaels was born June 20, 1927 to Edward and Olive
(Goldthorpe) Chehock in Plymouth, IA. She was baptized in the Plymouth
Methodist Church.
Verva graduated from PlymouthHigh School in 1945, and attended
Hamilton Business College, now Kaplan University, graduating in 1947.
Following graduation she worked at Iowa Retail Hardware Assoc. in
Mason City.
On October 22, 1947,Verva married LaVerne R. Michaels at Plymouth
Methodist Church. They lived in St. Ansgar, and to this union
three children were born.
She worked as secretary to the Principal at St. Ansgar High school
for 20 years,
retiring in 1988.
Verva enjoyed traveling, shopping, and golf but her greatest
enjoyment was the
time she spent with her family. She was a member of First Lutheran
Church,
active in the Mary Ruth circle, Clausen Colony Questers, and American
Legion Auxiliary.
She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.
Verva is survived by her children Suzanne (Dean) Shoars of Waverly,
Steven
(Mary Jane) Michaels and Mark Michaels of St. Ansgar; five grandchildren
Jason
(Jennifer) Shoars of Waverly, Ryan (Lynne) Shoars of Tampa, FL, Brendan
(Sequoyah) Shoars of Spring Creek, Nev, Dr. Lindsey Michaels of Iowa
City, Laura Michaels, of Chicago,IL; five greatgrandchildren: Jackson,
Garret and Jillian Shoars, Taylor Shoars and Sienna Shoars. One sister
Shella E. (Don) Anderson of Carson City, Nev. and brother-in-law Gerald
(Mary Ann) Halverson of St. Ansgar.
