Marcella Gahm

Marcella L. “Marcy” Gahm, 71, of Pearl City died on Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at home with her family at her bedside. Marcy was born on August 22, 1938, the daughter of Carroll Hugh and Viola (Lorenzen) Neeley in Mason City, IA. She attended St. Ansgar High School, and also attended Hamilton Business College in Mason City, IA.

She married Paul Spindler on August 12, 1961. He preceded her in death. Marcy worked at Attorney and Doctor’s offices as a secretary, she was a homemaker, and farmer’s wife. Before her retirement, she worked at Amity Well Child Clinic and the Swiss Colony.

Marcy married Marlyn M. Gahm of Pearl City on June 13, 1987. Together they founded “Singles in Agriculture”, where she enjoyed being President. Marcy enjoyed craft work, reading, canning, flowers and gardening. Marcy loved spending time with her family and friends, going to Branson, MO, to music shows, and her cat Angel, and her therapy dog Joy.

Marcy will be dearly missed by her husband, Marlyn, four children; Craig Spindler of Iowa, Becky Spindler of Freeport, Vanessa (John) Huisman of Osage, IA, and Darlyne (Paul) Huisman of St. Ansgar, IA, her grandchildren; Lorilee (Tyler) Wise, Amanda, Diana, Matthew, Clarissa, Rachel, Chelsea, and Whitney, her sister; Beverly (Roger) Bartz of Osage, IA, brothers; Keith (Virginia) Neeley and Garry (Julie) Neeley both of St. Ansgar, IA.

She is preceded in death by her parents, one granddaughter; Samantha, and her first husband Paul.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, June 5, 2010 at St. Paul Baptist Church in Freeport, with Rev. Peter F. Williams officiating.

Burial was at a later date at Highland Cemetery in Pearl City.


William L. “Bill” Read

Northwood- William L. “Bill” Read, 63, of 107 11th St. S., Northwood, Iowa, died Thursday (June 3, 2010) at the Good Samaritan Society of Albert Lea, Minn.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday (June 7, 2010) at the First Lutheran Church, 309 North 9th Street, Northwood, with Reverend Daniel R. Hart officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood where Military honors will be conducted by members of Our Buddies Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #6779 of Northwood.

A visitation will be held from 4 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. on Sunday (June 6, 2010) at Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. South, in Northwood. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to service time on Monday at the church.

Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Bill Read Memorial Fund.

William Lynn Read was born on October 2, 1946, in Webster City to Weldon and Viola (Stout) Read. He attended high school at Northwood-Kensett High School. Following high school, Bill enlisted in the United States Army where he honorably served hiscountry during the Vietnam Conflict.

On June 27, 1984, Bill was united in marriage to Gail Bremseth in Northwood.

Always having been known as a “Jack of All Trades,” Bill was very handy with any mechanical, electrical or carpentry work that needed to be done around the house. Bill owned and operated “Bill’s Service” in Carpenter during the ‘70’s while also serving on the Carpenter Fire Department.

In addition to his time spent as a mechanic, Bill also had many hobbies. He enjoyed playing cards, especially Cribbage and Huckly Buck, as well as watching NASCAR and cheering for Dale Earnhardt for many years.

Bill also liked bowling and spent numerous years on a bowling league. Inmore recent years he found entertainment in riding his golf cart around Northwood and visiting with his friends.

In addition, he enjoyed spending time with his family around the Holidays and other special occasions.

Bill was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Northwood, and the Northwood Men’s Club, as well as a lifetime member of the V.F.W. and the Glenville Legion.

Those grateful in sharing in his life are his wife Gail, Northwood; children, Michael (DeAnn) Read, Northwood, Amy (Mark) Wallin, Alden, Minn. and Benjamin Read, Northwood; his mother, Viola Read, Northwood; grandchildren, Joseph and Justin Read, Spencer, Jacob and Ryan Wallin; sister, Carol (Allan) Johnson, Northwood; Nieces, Nephews, Aunts, Uncles, In-Laws as well as other relatives and numerous friends.

He is preceded in death by an infant son, Nathan; his father, Weldon; and two siblings, Mary Alice, in childhood and Jimmy in infancy.

Mary Violet Leraaen

St. Ansgar, IA—Mary Violet Leraaen, 95, of St. Ansgar, died June 12, 2010 at St. Ansgar Good Samaritan Society, St. Ansgar, IA.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, June 18 at First Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar with Rev. Robert Porisch officiating. Burial will be in First Lutheran Cemetery, St. Ansgar. Visitation will be held Thursday, June 17, 2010 from 5:00-7:00 PM at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, 207 S. School Street, St. Ansgar.

Mary Violet Warner Leraaen was born on June 27, 1914, the first of seven children to Ross and Mabel Warner in Fingal, ND. She grew up on a farm in the area, attended country school in Cass County and graduated from high school in May, 1934. She died peacefully on June 12, 2010 at the Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar, IA.

Violet was united in marriage to Halvor Leraaen on November 11, 1945 in Lucca, ND and they were married nearly 51 years. They lived in St. Ansgar their entire married life where Halvor owned and operated the family shoe repair business begun by his father. Violet helped him often, raised their two daughters and took an active role of service in their church. She and Halvor served as custodians of First Lutheran Church Parish Center for many years.

Violet began work at the Good Samaritan Center in October of 1967 and was there until she retired in October of 1982. Violet was a member of First Lutheran Church where she taught children’s Sunday School and Vacation Bible School in her early years. She actively participated in Ladies Aid, led her Circle Bible Studies and made countless quilts for Lutheran World Relief.

Violet is survived by her daughters June (Paul) Ulring of Columbus, OH and Mary Kay (Bill) Mark of Faribault, MN; grandchildren Michael (Katie) Ulring and sons, Jaedon and Karson of Columbus, Nathan (Erika) Ulring of San Diego, CA, Laura Ulring of Chicago, IL, Sonja (Bill) Shoemaker and son, Tristan of Fullerton, CA, Jada (Bill) Affentranger and children, Allen, Olivia, Jackie & Elizabeth of Faribault, Angela (Keith) Altamirano and children, Keith and Belen of Vancouver, WA; her sister, Ilene Pendergraft of Youngstown, FL and her brother, Virgil Warner of Fingal, ND; and many nieces and nephews. Kenneth Goplerud

Osage, IA--Kenneth Milford Goplerud, retired Mitchell County farmer, went to his heavenly home on June 21, 2010, at age 91, at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center, Osage, Iowa. Services will be held at the Deer Creek Lutheran Church, Carpenter, Iowa on Saturday June 26, 2010 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Roy Ott officiating, visitation beginning at 1:00 PM at the church. Burial will be in the First Lutheran Cemetery following lunch at the church.

Kenneth was born March 5, 1919 and grew up on the Goplerud farm south of Otranto, Iowa. he attended and graduated from Otranto school in 1936. After graduation he joined his father in the farming operation, raising cabbage, potatoes, row crops and livestock.

Kenneth enjoyed farming with the work horses and could still remember all of their names. Kenneth enjoyed antique auctions, fishing, music and singing. His family treasures his hand carved Santas, Norwegian horses and fish decoys. The grandchildren and great-grandchildren fondly remember Grandpa's stories, the birthday parades, and his wonderful sense of humor, and Grandpa loved and was very proud of all of them. Kenneth was a life-long member of the Lutheran church, was proud to be called a Norwegian, strived to be a good farmer and had a preference for John Deere equipment. Kenneth served on the Otranto School Board, the Deer Creek church counsel and was active in the community.

Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents, Christopher G. Goplerud and Theodora B. Goplerud; his first wife and mother of his children Marian (Voit) Goplerud; sister Elfrieda Uzlik; grandson Mark Steiert and step-son Michael Schorr.

Kenneth is survived by his wife Beatrice (Betty) Goplerud of Osage, IA; his daughter Linda (Jackson) Steiert of Osage, IA; his son David (Judy) of St. Ansgar, IA; his son John (Sharon) Goplerud of Park Rapids, MN; his step-son John (Phijitra) Schorr of Deland, FL; his grandchildren Greg (Kaye) Goplerud and family Kaitlyn and Hannah of St. Ansgar, Kari (Russ) Nelson and family Jordan and Gayle of St. Ansgar; Mary (Darwin) McKeen and family Cara and Brittney of Minnetonka, MN; John (Victoria) Steiert and family Hunter and Kendra of Osage,IA; Christopher (Dee) Goplerud and family Chris and Kyle of Park Rapids, MN; stepgranddaughters Jenny (Sam) Khichi and family Kiertan and Nathan of Westfield, NJ; Anne Schorr of Chicago, IL; and nephew Michael Uzlik of Lake City, FL. Franklin Kicherer

Franklin Kicherer, 94, of 1108 Hildreth Street in Charles City, died Wednesday, June 16, 2010 at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

A memorial service will be held at Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt Street, in Charles City on Friday, July 2, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. David Werges of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church officiating. Burial of Franklin and his wife, Jeanne’s ashes will follow in Riverside Cemetery.
