Agnes Gordon

Agnes Mildred Gordon, 86, Northwood, died on Saturday, December 29, 2012 at St. John's Lutheran Home in Albert Lea, Minnesota.

Funeral services for Agnes will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, January 3, 2013 at the First Lutheran Church, 309 North Ninth Street, Northwood, with Pastor Judy Converse officiating. Burial will be in the St. Ansgar City Cemetery.

Agnes Mildred Gordon was born on August 24, 1926 in Rock Township, Mitchell County, Iowa, the daughter of Melvin and Alma Sponheim. Agnes went to a country school during the first years of her life and then graduated from St. Ansgar High School in 1944. She attended Iowa State University and graduated with a degree in Home Economics in 1948.

Agnes taught Home Economics and Art in the Ruthven and Garner School Districts for four years. She married Vernon Gordon on November 23, 1952 and three daughters were born, Barbara, Mary, and Joyce. Vernon and Agnes worked together on their farm. They raised hogs, corn, and beans until their retirement in 1992 when they moved to Northwood.

Agnes was baptized, confirmed, and married at First Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar. Agnes and Vernon attended Deer Creek Lutheran Church while they raised their family, and attended First Lutheran Church in Northwood during their retirement. Agnes enjoyed gardening, sewing, spending time with friends and family, and helping her daughters and grandchildren with projects.

She was an excellent cook who enjoyed being in the kitchen with food and company. She was an active participant in both churches, including being the leader for the Ladies’ Aid and several Circles and teaching Sunday School. Vernon and Agnes recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Vernon Gordon, of Northwood; daughters, Barbara Gordon of Clive, Iowa, Mary (Ian) Zach of Percival, Iowa, and Joyce (Doug) Tempus of Northwood; four grandchildren, Sara and Aaron Zach of Sidney, Iowa and Laura and Tyler Tempus of Northwood; one great-granddaughter, Grace Zach of Sidney, Iowa; sister-in--law, Dorothy Sponheim of St. Ansgar, two nephews, Dennis (Bunita) and Wayne (Anita) Sponheim of St. Ansgar, one niece, Dianne (Craig) Stange of Bismarck, North Dakota, and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Melvin and Alma Sponheim and brother, Harlan Sponheim, father-in--law and mother- -in-law, M. L. (Luellyn) and Ada Gordon, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Laurel (Buzz) and Bev Gordon, and one nephew, Kenneth Gordon.
 

Ann Louise Patrick

Ann Louise Patrick, 81, of rural Grafton, died on Friday, December 28, 2012 at the St. Ansgar Good Samaritan Center, St. Ansgar, Iowa.

Funeral service was on Monday, December 31, 2012 at 2:00 PM at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Lyle, Minnesota, with Rev. Barbara Finley-Shea officiating. Burial was in the Grafton Cemetery, Grafton, Iowa.

Ann was born on August 30, 1931. Her parents were Arthur T. and Joyce (Flom) Christenson. She grew up in Edina, Minnesota.

Ann married Donald E. Patrick on March 21, 1952 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Edina, Minnesota. They lived at Goldstone, Montana, then moved to Grafton, Iowa.

Ann is best known for her large batches of homemade bread and caramel rolls. She was known to go down the list of names of her children when calling one of them, but mentioning every ones name except for the one she intended to call.

She had some vises in her life, Pepsi and chocolate were a couple. Ann, as her mother taught her, carried on the tradition of Christmas Wheatie’s cokkies and green bean casserole.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother Bruce Christenson.

Ann is survived by her husband, Donald E. Patrick , Grafton, Ia; children and grandchildren, Debby (Donald) Arrett , Gordonsville, MN their son Chad Patrick, Clear Lake, Ia and his daughter, Gracie Patrick; Daniel Patrick, Grafton; Dwight Patrick, Denver, Co. and daughters Shelly Patrick and Teresa Suydam both of Denver; David Patrick, Carpenter, Ia and son Tyler Patrick , Osage, Ia.; Diane (Robert) Ackerman, Highland, Wis. And children Kendra (Kevin) Kruse, Loganville, Wis., Nathan Ackerman, Milwaukee, Wis and his children, David and Jacky, DeForest, Wis. Kenneth Ackerman, Logan, Wis.; Donna (Ramon) Tirado, Colorado Springs, Co. and son, Ramon Jr. and fiancé, Erin, Woodstock, GA., Daniel Tirado, Colorado Springs, Co.; niece Gwen (Mike) Rosengarten, Washburn, Wis. and nephew Bruce A. (Lindsey) Christenson, Portland, OR.

Fern Barenz
(Died January 9, 2013)
Fern (Streich) Barenz, age 89, of Osage, passed on Wednesday, January 9, 2013, at Mitchell County Regional Health Care Center in Osage.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 19, 2013, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Osage with Rev. Bryan Lagerstam and Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Inurnment will be at the Osage Cemetery. There will be a time for lunch and fellowship following the memorial service at the church.

Fern was born July 27, 1923, in Grafton, Iowa, the daughter of Albert and Edna (Rosenberg) Streich. The family moved to St. Ansgar when Fern was five years old and to Osage when she was in tenth grade. Fern started teaching in Cedar Township in 1942. After teaching there for four years, the school closed. She then taught in Rock Township for two years, and in later years did substitute teaching. In October of 1943, she married Clinton Barenz. Four children were born to this union, Dennis, Thomas, James and Jan. Fern and Clinton had a food stand at the Mitchell County Fair for 30 years. They also had the Star Light Roller Rink for 14 years, and ran the popcorn stand on a corner of Main Street for many years. Fern had been a resident at the Faith Lutheran Home for the past several years. Fern and Clinton enjoyed the trips that they took to Japan and Europe. She also enjoyed her involvement with various card clubs.

Fern is survived by her children, James Barenz (Michiyo) of Osage, and Jan Barenz (Patty Morris) of North Las Vegas, Nevada; three grandchildren, Jennifer, Nicole and Brenton Barenz; and one great-granddaughter, Alana.

She was preceded in death by her father, Albert Streich; her mother, Edna (Rosenberg) Streich Runge; her husband, Clinton in 1994; her sons, Dennis in 2012, and Thomas in 1992; and a sister, Rose Thorson.

Leo W. Hanson

Leo W. Hanson, 92, of St. Ansgar, died Friday, January 11, 2013 at the St. Ansgar Good Samaritan Center. Funeral services was on Saturday, January 12, 2013 at 11:00 AM at St. Ansgar United Methodist Church, St. Ansgar, with Rev. Peter Chang officiating. Visitation was from 10:00 AM until service time on Saturday at the church. Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home of St. Ansgar, Iowa was in charge of arrangements. 

Leo was born July 19, 1920 in Alexandria, Minn. to Sefert and Cora (Sessions) Hanson. He was baptized in the Methodist Church of Alexandria. Later the family moved to Glenwood, Minn. Area where Leo attended school. In 1939 Leo moved to Detroit, Mich. where he was employed as a factory worker. On November 6, 1943, Leo was drafted into the U.S. Army and took his basic training in California.  Leo served in action in New Guinea and the Philippine Islands. On May 11 1945 Staff Sergeant Hanson was awarded the Bronze Star for Meritorious Achievement in connection with military operations against the enemy at Mindanao in the Philippines. Leo was honorably discharged from the Army on December 26, 1945 and began farming shortly thereafter in the Toeterville area.

On July 20, 1947 Leo married Avis Langrock in the St. Peters Lutheran Church in Toeterville. They continued to farm for 30 years north of Toeterville. In 1976, they moved to their new home in St. Ansgar and at this time joined the St. Ansgar United Methodist Church.  Leo worked for Acorn Park Farms for three years and the St. Ansgar Good Samaritan Center for five years until his retirement in 1985.

Leo was active in church and community affairs. He served on the church council and was treasurer of the Building Fund of St. Peters Lutheran Church, Toeterville. Leo was past Commander of Walter T. Eneberg Post 358 with the St. Ansgar American Legion.

Leo had a special love for the great outdoors and spent many hours hunting, fishing and playing golf. Leo suffered a stroke in 1986 which left him partially paralyzed and affected his speech. Leo’s mind was unaffected after the stroke, but became very concise with his spoken words. The words Leo would choose were always full of love, praise and kindness.

Leo is survived by his wife, Avis, son, Dennis (Mary) Hanson and daughter, Lisa (Jeff) Hansen all of St. Ansgar. Granddaughter, Leslie (Dr. Dan) Gavrila, children Aidan and Owen of Wausau, Wis. Grandson, Clark (Nicole) Jorgensen, children Talynn and Jaeger of St. Ansgar. Grandson, Nicholas ( Ashley) Hanson, children Connor, Mehki, Avah and Alannah of Draper, Utah. Sister-in-laws; Shirley Hanson and Audrey Carroll, brother-in-law David (Linda) Langrock. And many nieces and nephews.

Leo was preceded in death by his parents, Sefert and Cora Hanson; sister and brothers; Vera, Cecil, Ted, Harold and Don. Father and mother-in-law, Fred and Myrtella Langrock, and brother-in-laws; Don Carroll and Fred Langrock.

The true joy of Leo’s life was family and the great-grandchildren held a special love.


Brian J. Klapperich

Brian J. Klapperich, 50, of Stacyville, died Saturday, January 12, 2013 at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be on Friday, January 18, 2013 at 10:30 AM at Visitation Catholic Church, Stacyville, with Msgr. John Hemann officiating. Burial will be at Visitation Cemetery, Stacyville. Visitation is schedule from 4 – 8 p.m. on Thursday at the church. Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home of St. Ansgar is in charge of arrangements.

Brian was born on May 30, 1962 in Osage to Norbert and Mary Ann (Koenigs) Klapperich. He graduated from St. Ansgar High School in 1980. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, sang with the 40 Milers Barbershop Chorus. He loved playing the guitar and drawing and painting.

He worked at the Stacyville Nursing Home for 11 years. He loved to bowl and enjoyed playing softball and basketball. He followed the Saints, Hawks, Twins and Vikings. He had an infectious smile and was a friend to all.

He is survived by his mother Mary Ann, brothers Steve ( Laura), Dennis ( Monique) and Tim. Sisters Lori (John), Pam (Darren) and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his father Norbert.
